1 MEDIA INFORMATION Wilmington Blue Rocks (52-51, 14-19) Carolina League Affiliate of the Kansas City Royals at Winston-Salem Dash (51-52, 21-12) Carolina League Affiliate of the Chicago White Sox Game No. 104 Road Game No. 54 BB&T Ballpark Thursday, July 30, :00 p.m. BLUE ROCKS BREAKDOWN HOME: AWAY: STREAK: L4 LAST 5: 1-4 LAST 10: 2-8 SWEPT AWAY: After getting rained out of their series opener against Winston-Salem on Tuesday, the Blue Rocks dropped a pair of games to the Dash on Wednesday by scores of 5-4 and 2-0. It was the fifth time the Rocks have been swept in a doubleheader this season. ROCKS DROP ANOTHER SERIES: With two losses right out of the gate in this threegame series against the Dash, Wilmington has guaranteed itself another series loss. This is the sixth consecutive series the Rocks have lost. The last time Wilmington took a series came in their three-game set with Frederick from July 7-9. That series even has a bit of an asterisk to it, as the July 9 game was suspended midway through due to rain and had to be completed as part of a quasi-doubleheader on July 15. The Blue Crew s next chance to take a series will be a three-game set against Carolina from July 31 to August 2. GARCIA GOING GOOD: A 2-for-3 performance in the opening contest of the twin-bill allowed Carlos Garcia to extend his hitting streak to nine games, eclipsing his season-high in that category. Garcia had an eight-game hitting streak earlier in the season that lasted from June 21 to July 5. Despite his recent success at the plate, Wednesday was only the third time over the course of his nine-game hit streak that Garcia collected multiple knocks. The Venezuelan native also produced his first home run at the Advanced-A level during the stretch on July 27 against Lynchburg. Garcia is 13-for-36 (.361) with a homer, a double, three RBIs, and eight runs scored during his hitting streak,. DOUBLE THE PAIN: The double play ball was a major source of aggravation for the Blue Rocks all Wednesday long. In game one of the doubleheader, Wilmington bounced into a trio of twinkillings, one of which came with the bases loaded. Game two saw the Rocks hit into a single DP to bring their total to four on the day. On the previous home stand, Wilmington had a season-high four twin-killings turned on them by Lynchburg on July 26. With their four double plays on Wednesday, the Blue Crew brings its season total to 93, which is the most in the entire Carolina League. GOOSE EGGS AND NOT THE GOOD KIND: With Wednesday s 2-0 loss in the second game of the doubleheader, the Rocks were shut out for the second time in the season s second half and 12th time overall. Wilmington recently had a stretch where they went 34 games without getting held off the scoreboard, but they have now been blanked twice within a span of four days. After being held scoreless 10 times in the first half of 2015, the Blue Rocks suffered their first shutout loss of the second half on July 26 when they fell 2-0 to Lynchburg. Wilmington has shut out their opponents eight times this season, with their most recent such victory coming on the first game of the previous road trip, a 3-0 win on July 19 at Carolina. TRADE CHIPS: On Sunday, three former Wilmington Blue Rocks found new homes in Cincinnati when the Kansas City Royals dealt John Lamb, Brandon Finnegan, and Cody Reed to the Reds for N.L. All-Star Johnny Cueto. Lamb, former top-10 prospect, was the first to spend time on the Riverfront. He initially donned a Blue Rocks jersey in 2010 when he made 13 starts, going 6-3 with a 1.45 ERA. Lamb found himself in Delaware again in 2013 while rehabbing an injury. The lefty struggled his second time around going 4-12 with a 5.63 ERA. Finnegan had the shortest stint on the Riverfront. He started his professional career in Wilmington after being selected in the first round of the 2014 draft out of Texas Christian University. Finnegan allowed just five hits in 15 innings pitched before moving up the ladder and, eventually, pitching for the Royals on their World Series run. Reed started his 2015 campaign with the Blue Crew and had a memorable first-half, posting a League-leading 2.14 ERA and making the CL All-Star team before moving on to Double-A. THEY SAID IT MANAGER BRIAN BUCHANAN: You don t really say anything (going through a tough stretch). They ve just got to battle through it. The past week or so the schedule has been tough as far as travel and where we re going, but that s minor league baseball. That s part of the adjustment where you have to make mental adjustments and kind of trick yourself into feeling good. They ve got to get through it. It s just one of those things that mentally you ve got to prepare yourself and come out and play the game...(luis Rico) didn t have his stuff. It looked like he was just kind of wasn t real aggressive with any of his pitches, and when he did throw a strike, they hit it. His last three or four starts have been a little bit rough, and I think he just needs to get back to being more aggressive with his fastball and go from there. He hasn t been throwing the ball as aggressively as he was in the first half...(humberto Arteaga and Alfredo Escalera) put some good swings on those pitches (they hit homeruns on), especially (against Carson Fulmer) who had a pretty good fastball For all those guys who haven t been up here very long, it s nice to see them have a little bit of success...(brian Clark) threw the ball well. With these morning doubleheaders where it was hot, they didn t exactly hit the cover off the ball either. We had a chance in the (seventh inning of game two), we just couldn t get the big hit. We ll come back tomorrow and go from there...the first game was tough. We got picked off twice and hit into three double plays. That kills you, especially in a seven-inning game that can kind of kill a rally. They made good pitches and they got to two strikes on us. You ve got to protect the plate and hit them right where they re at. Brandon Brennan makes his eighth start of the season for the Dash tonight. The San Juan Capistrano, California native was a fourth-round pick by the White Sox in Originally drafted by the Rockies in 2012 in the 40th round, Brennan passed that up to attend Oregon. After redshirting with the Ducks, Brennan transferred to Orange Coast College and thrived in 2012, going 11-1 with a 1.25 ERA in 15 appearances. He had committed to transfer to the University of Houston, but the White Sox were able to ink him to a reported $321,000 deal. Injuries have derailed his professional career. In 2013, the right-hander suffered an elbow ailment that required Tommy John surgery. He had the procedure on his 22nd birthday (July 26, 2013), and he missed almost 11 months of action. Brennan returned to a Minor League mound on June 20, 2014, with rookie-level Great Falls and made 14 appearances in However, Brennan suffered a pectoral injury late in Spring Training that forced him to miss the first 63 games of this season. Esmay spent eight years coaching at the University of Utah before returning to his Alma Mater, Arizona State. He joined the Sun Devils as an assistant coach back in 2005, a position he held for five seasons. Prior to the 2010 campaign, Esmay was named the program s head coach, another position he held for five years. During his time at ASU (where he also played collegiately) he led his squad to four NCAA regional tournament berths until being replaced by Tracy Smith, the former skipper at Indiana. Lots of Promise: The Dash enter the series as the team with the best record in the CL s second-half despite coming in last place in the first-half. First place is probably where this team was expected to be considering their wealth of prospects. Their highest rated prospect according to Baseball America is infielder Trey Michalczewski, who occupies the number eight spot per BA s rankings. Other top 30 prospects in the White Sox farm system on the Dash include Jace Fry (13), Cleuluis Rondon (16), Brandon Brennan (21), Adam Engel (23), Jake Peter (24), James Dykstra (25), Keon Barnum (26), and Michael Ynoa (28). Four of these young men are pitchers, four are infielders, and Engel is the lone outfielder on the list. Leaving His Mark: Dash infielder Jake Peter is considered a top prospect this year, and for those who knew him back in high school, that comes as no surprise. During his time at Mason City High School in Iowa, the 22-year-old was a member of the basketball, football, and track and field programs in addition to being a baseball player. Peter s true calling is on the diamond, though, and he was a major stand out as a prep star. Peter was voted the Player of the Year in the state of Iowa back in 2011 by the Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association. Before heading off to Creighton University, Peter set numerous records at his high school. The single-season marks he holds include home runs (13), walks (31), and saves (six). The career records Peter claims are hits (206), RBIs (126), home runs (21), runs (187), doubles (56), and saves (10). Early Success: While Winston-Salem pitcher Jace Fry might call the professional ranks home nowadays, he got a taste of the game s big stage much earlier. Fry was a member of the Beaverton, Oregon Little League team that placed third in the Little League World Series back in Representing the Northwest Region, Fry s squad got through pool play with a 2-1 record. After winning their opener in the elimination round 4-3 over the Great Lakes team, they fell 7-3 to the Southeast region (the eventual champion). Their consolation game against Matamoros, Mexico was cancelled due to rain, and both teams shared third place that year.

3 TONIGHT S BLUE ROCKS STARTING PITCHER #40 LHP Matthew Strahm Acquired: Selected in the 21st round of the June 2012 Free Agent Draft Born: November 12, 1991 in Fargo, N.D. Age: 23 Resides: West Fargo, N.D. Ht: 6-3 Wt: 183 College: Neosho County Community College Bats/Throws: Right/Left Pitch Repertoire: Fastball, Slurve, Changeup Matthew Strahm: A native of North Dakota, Matthew Strahm took an interesting path to professional baseball. Growing up the weather only permitted outdoor baseball to be played four months out of the year, but that didn t stop Strahm from earning an opportunity at Neosho County Community College in Kansas. He pitched so well there that he earned a scholarship opportunity at Nebraska, but turned that down to go pro when the Royals drafted him in the 21st round in Strahm began his pro career in 2012 at Idaho Falls, but then missed the entire 2013 campaign with an elbow injury. He went back to Idaho Falls in 2014, making 10 appearances and posting a 2.29 ERA. Strahm began this season with Low-A Lexington where had a 2.08 ERA, a.140 batting average against and fanned 38 in 26 innings pitched He was promoted to Wilmington in June. While he projects as a reliever, his ability to give length shifted him into first a piggyback role with the Blue Rocks and now an exclusive spot in the rotation with Alec Mills going to the disabled list. Last Time Out: Strahm allowed just one run on two hits in 5.1 frames during a no-decision against Lynchburg on Saturday. The lefty walked a season-high tying three, but left in a 1-1 tie. The bullpen would dig the Rocks a 6-1 deficit that the offense erased with a five-run rally in the ninth. Wilmington won the game in the 10th. Pluses And Minuses To Home: Strahm grew up in North Dakota, which is not exactly a place that s all that conducive to playing baseball at the highest level. (There is) not very good baseball (in North Dakota), Strahm said. Four solid months out of the year maybe to play. My parents took me around the Midwest, down to Kansas (and) Oklahoma for showcases and everything during the winter. It just presented me with the opportunities to keep playing baseball, and I took them. There were some positives though. Injury In His Own Words: In January of 2013, I had a stress reaction on my elbow then I rehabbed that for six months, started a throwing program again, and then at the end of that throwing program that same pain came back. They re-mri d it, and that same stress reaction was back Exploratory surgery was what they wanted to do, but it was set up for Tommy John (surgery). When they cut me open they saw that my ligament was stretched instead of torn, so I had Tommy John (surgery). All in all, it was 22 straight months of rehab. Season-High K s: 9, 6-26 vs. Potomac Career-High K s: 9, 2x last (5-26) vs. Potomac Last Win: 6-26 vs. Potomac Process Of Coming Back: Mindset-wise, the Royals have presented all the opportunities in the world to help Last Loss: 7-20 at Carolina us through (major injuries). We ve got a mental skills coach who I worked with...early in Lexington my velocity was down, and it was just more of the fact of not trusting my stuff. (My injury) could be a blessing in disguise, Most IP, 2015: 6.0 (7-7) vs. Frederick but missing all of the 2013 season was hard on me. Baseball has been my life, so sitting out a full year was tough, Most IP, Career: 6.0, (7-7-15) vs. Frederick and then I missed all of the 2014 season except that last month. Mentally, I ve approached it as I ve just got to do me and trust everything I ve got and give it my all every day I ve seen my velocity go up a little bit (since the surgery). As far as confidence, I really didn t have confidence in my elbow until just a couple months ago when Carlos Reyes the pitching coach down in Lexington was my rehab pitching coach kind of just took me aside and (said) listen, you ve got to trust it, and you ve just got to let it go. And it was just a flip of the switch. I just Career Numbers trusted it, and I was like if it s going to go again, it s going to go, I can t hold back. My velocity came back and actually jumped a little bit. It s been good so far, and I still do rehab every day with (trainer James) Stone here, just Year/Teams(s) W-L ERA IP to keep my maintenance up and keep my elbow strong (Idaho Falls) Wrong Side Of The Rubber?: I do (pitch from the right side of the mound). I shouldn t, but I do. It s a big no-no for 2013 Did not play due to injury us lefties. But I grew up idolizing Cliff Lee. He did it and dominated, and I always wanted to do that and I still do it. It s a comfort thing. (Coaches) always (try to change where I stand on the mound) When I blew up my elbow in 2013, coming 2014 (Idaho Falls) back from rehab not throwing off a mound for a year, they said we re going to switch you to the left side. I was open to it, 2015 (Lexington) did everything with it, and I just struggled getting the ball glove-side down. They finally said go back to it, and if it causes problems facing left-handed hitters later on, we ll switch it. So far, I haven t heard anything about being switched back, (Wilmington) but eventually I m sure (I) will, and I totally understand it, but right now it s just a comfort thing and I like it over there. If You re Struggling Just Slow Down: Strahm s philosophy is simple. If it s going good why wait, and if it s not going good, take a deep breath. I ve just got to step back, slow everything down and take it one step at a time. When it s going good just keep going. Catch it and throw it, but when there s a little bump in the road just take a step back and get back out there and go after them Appearances (Lexington & Wilmington) The Book on Matthew (2015) At Home: 1-0, 2.38 On the Road: 0-1, 3.27 LH Opp Avg:.128 RH Opp Avg:.177 Record when he pitches: 1-1 Wilmington Record when he starts: 2-3 Run Support (overall): 4.0 Run Support (starting): 4.3 ERA: 2.67 Totals Date OPP G GS DEC ERA IP H R ER BB SO HR HBP WP Score Upon Exit Result Notes Apr. 1 0 SV LEX, 3-1 W, 3-1 First save since Sept Apr. 2 0 ND GVL, 5-3 L, 8-4 Allowed first earned run of year Apr. 21 GVL 3 0 ND GVL, 5-3 L, 5-3 Longest outing with LEX Apr. 4 0 L WV, 5-4 L, 5-4 First loss since Aug. 23, 2012 May 5 0 SV LEX, 6-3 W, 6-3 4th road app. in 5 games May 9 KAN 6 0 ND LEX, 8-5 L, 13-8 LEX allowed 8 runs in 9th May 10 KAN 7 0 W LEX, 11-6 W, days rest for first time in career May 8 0 SV LEX, 5-2 W, 5-2 1st of 4 multi-inn. appearances May 9 0 SV LEX, W, Most run support this season May 22 HAG 10 0 ND LEX, 5-1 W, 5-1 Stranded only inherited runner May 11 0 W KAN, 3-2 W, 4-3 LEX scored twice in 9th to take lead Jun ND ROM, 5-2 L, 5-2 Ended 4-game streak of multi-inn. app. Jun ND W, 3-2 LEX would win in 13 innings Jun. 10 LWD 14 0 ND LWD, 4-1 W, 5-4 LEX scored 4 in 9th for walk-off win WILMINGTON Jun. 16 SAL 15 0 ND L, 4-3 Adv.-A debut Jun ND WIL, 6-0 W, 6-0 Game was suspended due to rain Jun. 26 POT 17 1 W WIL 5-1 W, 5-1 1st start of 2014, 2nd of career Jul. 2 LYN 18 1 SV WIL 3-2 W, 3-2 First Advanced-A save Jul. 7 FRE 19 2 ND FRE 2-0 L, 4-3 Longest career outing Jul ND LYN 8-4 L, 8-4 Shortest outing since Jun. 1 Jul L CAR 5-2 L, 8-2 All five runs came in 5th inn. From what I ve seen in the couple of days since I got here, it s the confidence that we have (that enables us to come back). We never give up, we keep fighting. We ve got each other s backs. That s huge for us. #7 Carlos Garcia, IF 5-10, 172 Lives: Margarita, Venezuela LG: July 29 at WS: 2-3, BB Road Trip: 2-3, BB Notes: Signed as a non-drafted free agent by the Royals on His father, Carlos Albert Garcia, also spent time in pro ball. I m just trying to have a little patience at the plate so Mauricio (Ramos) and (the middle of out order) can drive me in...(offense) is about confidence. I ve been talking to Abraham Nunez I ve known him for two or three years, he s a really good hitting coach. He s been talking to me about my feel for the type of ballpark we have in Wilmington. The ball doesn t really fly there so we have to keep swinging at the pitches down. #16 Alfredo Escalera, OF 6-1, 186 Lives: Bradenton, FL LG: July 29 at WS: 1-3, 2K Road Trip: 2-5, HR, RBI, R, BB, 2K Notes: Selected in the eighth round of the 2012 June Free Agent Draft... graduated from The Pendleton School in Bradenton, FL in named honorable mention Preseason All-American by Rawlings and Perfect Game in Earned the 2013 Mike Sweeney Award as the player who best represents the organization on and off the field...uncle, Nino, played for the Cincinnati Reds in 1954 and later scouted for the Giants...cousin, Ruben, played in the Milwaukee and Cincinnati organizations and later served as an instructor in the Oakland system. I think the experience from last year to this year helped me a lot. I knew what to expect going back to Lexington and I didn t put so much pressure on myself. I just played the game as I ve played it my whole life. I think I m just more relaxed and I had a better start to this year... (Moving to Florida) was a baseball decision my dad basically said that he thought I had a better chance of getting drafted out of Florida than Puerto Rico It was a great decision and I think that s why I got drafted, because of my experience playing in Florida... I like Carlos Beltran and Roberto Clemente before (that). I never got a chance to see (Clemente) play, but Roberto Clemente has the best character. He died trying to help others so I try to follow his character and try to mimic him. Right now one of my favorite players is Carlos Beltran. He s Puerto Rican, he plays baseball the right way so I try to mimic both of them. # 35 Cam Gallagher, C 6-2, 220 Lives: Lancaster, PA LG: July 29 at WS: 0-2 Road Trip: 0-2 Notes: Drafted in the second round of the 2011 MLB Draft graduate of Manheim Township High in Lancaster, PA...Hit.434 wtih 4 HR, 19 RBI, and 29 runs as a high school senior...played in the Aflac All-American Baseball Classic after his junior season...first Team Rawlings Preseason All-American in Named the 20th-best prospect in the Appalachian League in Father, Glenn, pitched in the Toronto Blue Jays organization and was selected in the third round of the 1981 Draft...Brother, Austin, was also a third-round draft pick by the L.A. I saw he texted me and said, Do you have your passport? and I was like, Oh gosh, did I get traded? I called him back and was a little nervous and he asked me if I was interested in playing in the Pan-Am Games and I said, Yeah, absolutely, kind of thinking that it was at least two or three weeks away and (he told me I d have to fly the next morning). It was a bit overwhelming but it was a great experience. It s a real honor to play for your country and play with the group of guys that was there. A lot of veterans who have been playing in the big leagues for a while and some young guys, so it was a good group. Unfortunately, we didn t come out on top, but we won silver and it was an experience I ll never forget. It gave me chills (to put on the U.S.A. jersey)

I just gut-checked myself and said, this is what I love, this what I ve got to do. If this is what I want to do I have to go out there and give it all I ve got everyday.... (Seeing the Royals in the World Series) was awesome. I wish nothing but the best for those guys, especially Terrance [Gore] and [Brandon Finnegan]. They were just with us here last year and you ve got to wish them nothing but the best. You get chills once you see what this organization has gone through and where we re at now... Alcides Escobar is somebody that a lot of infielders look up to. The way he plays defense, the way he steals bases, the way he produces hitting and everything he does. Offensively, we just need to step up and start scoring a couple more runs. A little more situational hitting, maybe just an inning starter would help. We ll be fine. It s baseball, that s how it works sometimes...it s a, next guy up, type of mentality (in the clubhouse). We ve got some new bats in this locker room that can swing it as well so we re not too worried about it, it s just a coincidence that today we didn t swing it as well...i got the opportunity to play for (Brian Buchanan) in Instructional League. I love it. He expects you to come work hard and be on time. As long as you re playing hard and on time, you re not going to have many problems. We re building a new routine because the routine I had before wasn t working because it was tough on me coming off an injury. I just keep working hard in the cage with Abraham... Working with our hitting coach Abraham Nunez and putting good swings on good balls and swinging at strikes (has led to success at the plate). I pick out a spot and I pick out a pitch that I like and try to stay disciplined and only look for that one. (I try to) not give in and swing at marginal pitches. Everybody gives in and chases once in awhile but I try to limit that and really stick to the part of the zone that I m looking for. A lot of (what I m looking for) is getting a feel for what the guy is doing to you (pattern-wise) and also what are your strengths and what you can do best. You want to do what you can do, not let the pitcher dictate what you do in the at-bat. You ve got to stay in control and just stick to what you do best and what you like to hit, especially when you re ahead in the count... Lineup-wise, there s just as much talent now (as there was at the beginning of the season). Great guys came up to fill for guys who moved on. I feel like it s always a difficult adjustment with a new group of guys, it s almost like a new team personality in the second-half. There s just too much talent here not to win. #29 Mauricio Ramos, IF 6-1, 181 Lives: Cartagena, Colombia LG: July 29 at WS: 0-3, K Road Trip: 3-7, 2B, R, K Notes: Signed as a non-drafted free agent on August 26, Named 2011 Rookie of the Year in the Colombian Winter League... (left-center and right-center) is my approach. When I hit the ball hard I m always thinking double...i don t always think offensively, baseball is offense and defense. If someday I m not hitting well, I try to practice my defense, too...i don t change my swing (for homeruns). I just think about hitting the ball hard. I think my approach is to hit doubles, but if I can hit a homerun it s good, I ll take it. I ve lived in San Diego and I currently live in Salt Lake City...The biggest thing is picking a routine and sticking to it. For me, I try to have an approach of hitting the ball the other way and to swing down, hit groundballs and line drives. If you pop the ball up you have no chance of getting a hit so I try to stick to that routine everyday and, also, just take it one day at a time...this is my first time in Delaware. I haven t been able to get around very much since I just got my car on Tuesday). I was able to meet some of the fans today; great people. I m excited to get this year started.
