The Olympic Tennis tournament takes place at the All-England Club and runs from July 28 to August 5. All the medal matches are on August 4 and 5. And then it will be Rogers Cup time in Canada. Both are scheduled for extensive TV coverage. For tickets, check out rogerscup.com. Although it s great to watch the world s best players on TV, there s nothing quite like seeing them in person. Consider a low-cost ticket on Monday or Tuesday, and take advantage of the chance to watch the practice courts and get close to the action on the outer courts as well as the grandstand. They re working to formalize all our club policies and procedures, and are particularly interested in hearing from members. 2 One of the first actions of the new Board was to create a First Aid station on the courts. Should you have need of any emergency supplies, you ll find a good selection in the new box. Of particular interest are gel-pacs that will generate icy cold when water is added... helpful if a player suffers a sprain or injury that includes swelling. John Christie Many thanks to club treasurer John Christie, who demonstrated his versatility with the design and construction of the new First Aid station. Ladies Night Festivities Club members continue to sing the praises of Liz Vinassac and Kay Ashwood, coordinators of our wonderfully successful Ladies Night program on Wednesday evenings. In return, Liz and Kay applaud the exemplary spirit of the players who support the program with their conscientious attendance, their patience with varied playing levels, and their enthusiasm for social time together. It takes the complete package to make things continue to thrive. This Groaning Board was put together for the annual Wine & Cheese social on July 4th... quite a spread! 3 Breakfast at Wimbledon The place was The SandTrap, Niagara-on-the-Lake s newest sports bar. The date was July 8th, and the occasion was the Wimbledon final between Andy Murray and Roger Federer. It was a great day for our sport, worthy of celebration in the company of like-minded friends. A great time was had by all, with as many as 40 dropping by at one time or another. The Sand Trap did a wonderful job in hosting the event for us and the early bird attendees were treated to scrumptious complimentary pastries as well as strawberries & cream. As the match moved into the second set the champagne corks were popped and we moved from drinking morning coffee to mimosas. By the time the third set was underway, we all had a chance to view the restaurant menu and everyone was enjoying the final sets with a great selection of food options. Sheila Krause won tickets to the National Youth Orchestra s performance at Jackson-Triggs Winery on July 29th, compliments of Music Niagara s executive director Christopher Blake. Anna O Neill and Pippa deleonardis won tickets to the Jazz Festival at Hillebrand Winery on July 14th, compliments of Greg & Karen Berti. Ross Robinson won the 50:50 draw, with the proceeds being used to establish a Tennis Club Social Fund. This wonderful event was the brainchild of Ross Robinson, shown here with Deb Robert (left) and Amy Weiner. Ross loves style and tradition and continues to encourage us to wave the flag for Tennis. 4 Monday Morning Women s Round Robin It has taken a while to develop, but patience brings rewards. Each Monday morning at 8:30, the club hosts a drop-in event for our women members who are looking for a spirited but low-pressure game. The event is gathering momentum, in large part thanks to the great spirit of Maria Budin and Marion Briston. The over-riding feature of the game is an ever-present smile on the faces of the players... this is Happy Tennis at its best. The photograph is an invitation to other club members to come and join the action. You re assured of a warm welcome and it s a great way to start the week. On June 21st, players in the Thursday morning games were happy to toast continued good health and good tennis for Pete Unger on the occasion of his 80th birthday. Pete joins 3 other club members at the 80+ level, with another 3 poised to join them before the end of the season. How s that for inspiration! Among those wishing Pete well were Ellen Cheslock, Marion & Alan Briston, Phil Landray, Hella & Michael Beck, and Will Wilson.

5 Family Time on Saturdays A new initiative for the club is something called Family Tennis, on Saturday afternoons at 5:00. The idea is to find a little opening in the middle of busy weekends... an opening during which kids and parents can get together for some fun tennis and perhaps make the acquaintance of others. Kicking things off last week were Olivia, Sebastian, Yoko, Mel, Ed and Emira. We can set up small nets and play with red balls for the U10 players, and we can set up games on regular courts for those who are ready for full-court tennis. Anything and everything is possible! 6 Making the Most of What We ve Got It would be wonderful to have a clubhouse where we could drop in and know we d find other tennis players to chat with, or where we d find information about games and activities. But in the meantime, it s remarkable to see the resourcefulness of so many players in making the most of our little tennis pavilion. For several years, the Tuesday Night Guys, led by Otto Werner, have enjoyed two hours of competitive tennis followed by an hour or so of conversation and refreshments. They take turns bringing dinner to share with the group. This week s dinner was made by Tom Braybrook and featured fajitas (vegan, of course) with all the trimmings including hand-made guacamole and salsa. Enjoying the new evening-light in the pavilion are Roman Korda, Tom, Jeff Joanovic, Mark Stevens, Otto Werner and Gerry Pepe. Missing from the photo are Ulli Schindler and Hugo Lirio. Follow us on Facebook Check the website for Court Availability and other information It s been an unusually long gap since the last edition of NTN, a result of time spent in Ottawa with the grandsons followed by time spent in British Columbia with my remarkably resilient 88-year-old mother.
