1 USTA PACIFIC NORTHWEST E-NEWSLETTER E JULY 2013 Women s Professional Tennis Events Coming to Pacific Northwest Area this July It s an exciting month for professional tennis both internationally and locally. Yes, Wimbledon still has a few days of competition left in its wild 2013 fortnight but two USTA Women s Pro Circuit Challenger $50,000 tournaments will be played in the Pacific Northwest area this July. The USTA Pro Circuit is the pathway to WTA or ATP tour-level competition for aspiring tennis players. Players such as Maria Sharapova, Caroline Wozniacki, and Li Na are among today s top stars who began their careers on the USTA Pro Circuit. Players will compete July 7-14 in the Yakima Regional Hospital Women s Challenger at the Yakima (Wash.) Tennis Club. Last year s champion Shelby Rogers, who qualified for the 2013 French Open, and Michelle Larcher de Brito, who just upset Sharapova at Wimbledon, are scheduled to play. Following the Yakima event will be the new Oregon Women's Challenger July at Tualatin Hills Tennis Center in Beaverton, Ore. Scheduled to play are No. 57 world-ranked Tamira Paszek of Austria, a 2012 Wimbledon quarterfinalist, along with No. 85 Lauren Davis of the U.S. Both tournaments will also be holding many off-court events that are open to the public and best of all, admission is free for all spectators. 2 USTA Pacific Northwest Early Start Ratings Now Available The 2014 USTA League season is just around the corner and it kicks off with the 2014 USTA Pacific Northwest Early Start Leagues. Early Start Leagues are simply leagues which start before the Year End Ratings are published in November. An Early Start Rating allows you to register for an Early Start League. Soon, there will be a FAQ sheet available on the USTA/PNW website that will explain further details about Early Start Ratings, how they differ from Year End Ratings, and how players can fluctuate up or down between the two ratings. For now, go to to see if your early start rating has changed from your Year End Rating. Only those ratings that have changed are listed so if you do not see your rating it is the same as your previous Year End Rating Early Start League Information All areas in the USTA/PNW will have Adult 55 & Over and Mixed 18 & Over as Early Start Leagues except for Alaska which will have Mixed 40 & Over as an Early Start League. 5 Corvallis Elementary School Students Get Into the Swing of TAZ What happened when the USTA/PNW Tennis Afterschool Zone (TAZ) program came to two schools in Corvallis, Oregon? Lots of smiles, laughter and exercise for the 18 students who were introduced to tennis in their school gyms this May. All those things could be seen in the final Play Day session as TAZ participants, parents and staff closed the show to rave reviews. Comments such as can t we play another round and tennis is giving me such a good workout were heard from students and parent Sarah Jane Gilmour said her son thoroughly enjoyed the experience and is very keen to do TAZ again next school year. Helping to make the Corvallis TAZ program such a success were staff members Victoria Peterson, Jennifer Smith, Kayla Vodka, Dao Her and Trenton Howard, all Oregon State University students. They enjoyed their involvement in TAZ almost as much as the students, according to Instructor Kayla: The students were very encouraging and constantly cheering on one another. Their enthusiasm for both having fun and learning tennis was amazing. TAZ proved to be a hit in Corvallis and the USTA/PNW is looking forward to offering the program again this fall. Additional instructors are needed to join the fun! us at taz@pnw.usta.com if you re interested. The USTA/PNW would also like to thank Corvallis Parks and Recreation for all of their help this spring and look forward to a continued partnership as we expand the TAZ program.
