3 O Camas! Our county s namesake plant, the Common Camas, is one of only a few of our vegetable neighbors to rate a color plate in the legendary Range Plant Handbook, published in 1937 by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The Handbook, in odd corners of some Western American literary circles, is regarded as an accidental classic of New World botanical literature, reminiscent in some ways of the 18th century natural history masterpiece about the southeast U.S. coast, The Travels of William Bartram. The Range Plant Handbook was written during the Great Depression by a team of range scientists, supervised by W.A. Dayton. The Handbook is deeply loveable for its vast, ardent affection for the plants of the West, and its passionate attention to range plants and their relationships with livestock, game species, people, and the landscape. The illustrations, including the few color plates, were drawn by Leta Hughey. From The Range Plant Handbook, 1937: The palatability of camas varies from fair to fairly good, occasionally good for sheep. On the high summer ranges camasses are little grazed because they bloom, dry up and disappear before the sheep are moved to those ranges, and cattle do not ordinarily graze camas, but they frequently eat these plants along with other meadow forage. Camasses are not objectionable when cured in mixed native hay. Let us now praise famous vegetables! Back issues available at F Free VIP subscriptions! the.weekly.beaver@gmall.com
4 H2O conservation class! Tuesday! Sho-Ban Homecoming and the Camas Harvest! Sunday afternoon in the Park! A delegation of Native American dancers from Eastern Idaho is on the schedule for Sunday afternoon, 2 p.m., in the Fairfield Park. The event celebrates the historic importance of the Camas Prairie and its eponymous tuber, the common camas, to the early residents of the area. Father de Smet, in 1847, observed it this way: I cannot pass over in silence the camash root, and the peculiar manner in which it is prepared. It is abundant, and I may say, is the queen root of this clime. It is a small, white, vapid onion, when removed from the earth, but becomes black and sweet when prepared for food. The women arm themselves with long, crooked sticks, to go in search of the camash. After having procured a certain quantity of these roots, by dint of long and painful labor, they make an excavation in the earth from 12 to 15 inches deep, and of proportional diameter, to contain the roots. They cover the bottom with closely cemented pavement, which the make red hot by means of a fire. After having carefully withdrawn all the coals, they cover the stones with grass or wet hay; then place a layer of camash, another of wet hay, a third of bark overlaid with mold, whereon is kept a flowing fire for 50, 60 and sometimes 70 hours. The camash thus acquires a consistency equal to that of the jujube. Train Depot Museum Open Saturday!! New Exhibit!!! The Fairfield Train Depot Museum, operated by the Camas County Historical Society, will fling wide its doors Saturday 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. for Camas Lily Days. The museum features a new exhibit on Native Americans and the Camas Prairie Area! Shakan Bacon! 4H Swine Club reports in!! Clell s Bells! It s happenin at the library! Saturday at 7! Your assignment: report to the library and find a seat, if you can.
