By enabling your students to learn first aid in your school in line with the National Curriculum via our training programmes and free resources, you will go a considerable way towards promoting fundamental British values. Moreover, you will empower your students to learn skills that could one day save someone s life. TRAINING TO SATISFY YOUR DUTY OF CARE Your school has a duty of care to your students so that they are safe and they feel safe at all times. It s vitally important that you assess the needs of your students and that enough staff members are appropriately trained to deal with minor first aid situations and emergencies alike. You must consider all needs, including those in the school as well as activities outside the school. TRAINING TO MEET YOUR LEGAL REQUIREMENTS As with all workplaces in the UK, your school is legally obliged to make sure that staff members are protected by putting the right health and safety measures in place. This means identifying all first aid, fire safety and health and safety needs and making sure that appropriate training is provided. It s essential that the training meets the standards set by the Health and Safety Executive and that qualifications are maintained and certification is valid. EQUIPPING YOUR SCHOOL WITH THE RIGHT SUPPLIES In order to satisfy your legal responsibility to the health and safety of your staff and your duty of care for your students, your school must be equipped with appropriate first aid, fire safety and health and safety supplies to cover all risks from minor incidents to major emergencies.

More importantly, you ll be equipping your students with the skills and confidence to help those who need it, whether in your school, out in the community or in future workplaces. They could be the difference between a life lost and a life saved. We offer lots of ways to help you achieve this, from sessions run by our specialist schools trainers to free downloadable resources for your teachers that fit into the National Curriculum. There s also an online game to test first aid knowledge against the clock and fun events and competitions that your teachers and students can get involved with.

9 STUDENT FIRST AID PROGRAMME 1-5 HOURS DELIVERED BY A SCHOOLS SPECIALIST TRAINER STUDENT FIRST AID PROGRAMME Suitable for young people aged seven to 18, our Student first aid programme allows you to choose from a range of pre-designed courses for your students or even build a bespoke course from a range of modules. Our schools trainers are specialists in teaching first aid to young people and will deliver training that is practical, engaging and enjoyable for everyone. Our charges for delivering Student first aid training in schools are on a non-profit basis and simply cover our costs for delivering the course. You can choose from our range of popular pre-designed courses (below) or custom-design a course from a list of optional modules (see over the page). The Big First Aid Lesson Live In June 2015, a whopping 190,000 school students across the country tuned in with their teachers to join celebrity host Claudia Winkleman for a live interactive online first aid session. In one hour, students learned skills which could be the difference between life and death. Our annual schools competition provides the perfect opportunity for students to strengthen their first aid knowledge. Once the required criteria are fulfilled, your school is awarded the St John Ambulance Schools mark certificate and provided with the award logo for use in your school s promotional materials. By demonstrating their skills alongside their peers in realistic and engaging scenarios, young people can develop the confidence to save a life and have fun at the same time. 15 MEETING YOUR LEGAL REQUIREMENTS First aid training to meet your legal requirements FIRST AID TRAINING As with all workplaces in the UK, school employers have a legal obligation to identify all staff-related first aid needs and ensure that appropriate training and qualifications are in place. Our courses all meet the standards required by the Health and Safety Executive to help you fulfil your legal obligation for first aid cover in your school.

This two-day requalification course is for first aiders who ve previously qualified on a First aid at work course and need to renew their certificates before the expiry date passes. In two days your school first aiders will cover the content of the three-day First aid at work course. Your first aiders can also renew certificates on the full three-day course and benefit from the additional teaching and practice. First aid protocols for young children and infants are very different to first aid for adults. This two-day course focuses on the emergency scenarios that face professionals looking after young children and infants. The Paediatric first aid course meets the Ofsted Early Years and Childcare Register requirements. 20 ANNUAL REFRESHER ANNUAL REFRESHER ½ DAYS (3 HOURS) 1 COURSE EVERY WEEK For group training in your school, please contact us for a quote. Your school is legally required to ensure your first aiders are competent and maintain their skills throughout the three years in which their certificates are valid. This short course gives your first aiders an opportunity to practise and update their skills at any time while their first aid certificate is current. The first Annual refresher booking is FREE for those who qualify on a St John Ambulance First aid at work course and HALF PRICE for those who qualify on a St John Ambulance Emergency first aid at work course. Assessment: There is no assessment for this course. Certification: There is no certificate for this course. It is for updating knowledge and refreshing skills only. FREE WITH FIRST AID AT WORK The first Annual refresher course is FREE to those who gain the First aid at work qualification with St John Ambulance. HALF PRICE WITH EMERGENCY FIRST AID AT WORK The first Annual refresher course is HALF PRICE to those who gain the Emergency first aid at work qualification with St John Ambulance.

21 MEETING YOUR LEGAL REQUIREMENTS Fire safety training to meet your legal requirements FIRE SAFETY TRAINING Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order (2005) your school must take reasonable steps to reduce the risk of fire and make sure everyone in the school can safely escape if there is a fire. St John Ambulance is approved by the Institution of Fire Engineers to deliver training for workplace fire marshals: those who are responsible for assessing the risks, putting appropriate measures in place and ensuring safe evacuation of the premises in the event of a fire emergency. It s important that your school has enough fire marshals to cover the whole premises and ensure the safety of your staff and students in an emergency. Our free online calculator will help you determine how many fire marshals are needed, or simply call us and we ll be happy to advise.

This four-hour course covers the prevention of fire and safe evacuation in the event of a fire. It also provides an understanding of different types of fire extinguisher and practical training for correct use. 24 FIRE MARSHAL REFRESHER FIRE MARSHAL REFRESHER ½ DAY (2 HOURS) 1 COURSE EVERY WEEK For group training in your school, please contact us for a quote. For those who have previously qualified as fire marshals on a St John Ambulance course or similar, our two-hour refresher course gives your fire marshals an opportunity to update their fire safety knowledge, refresh their fire extinguisher skills and renew their certificates. 25 YOUR DUTY OF CARE Training to satisfy your duty of care FIRST AID TRAINING You re required to do all that is reasonable to protect the health, safety and welfare of students in your school and out on school-related activities. Making sure that staff members are appropriately trained is key to meeting your duty of care. This means that you must consider all the first aid needs and assess all the risks concerning your school s students and the risks to their safety and health in lessons, break times and through extracurricular activities. Are there any particular risks posed by activities in classrooms, on sports fields or further afield? Do you have students with existing health conditions or dangerous allergies? Is your school equipped with an automated external defibrillator, as is recommended by the Department for Education, with staff members trained to use it? This section of our brochure covers the training that you should consider in order to provide your students with a safe learning environment. All courses are scheduled regularly at our training venues but we always recommend that you have several staff members trained and we can always come to your school to deliver training to groups on days that suit you, such as your inset days, and at times that fit with your work.

26 SCHOOLS FIRST AID NEW 1 DAYS (6 HOURS) ½ DAY (3 HOURS) SCHOOLS FIRST AID For group training in your school, please contact us for a quote. This new course has been designed to give your staff a good knowledge of first aid to cover the most common school student risks. We strongly recommend group training in your school on a date that suits you, such as an inset day. The half-day course is available for group training on your school premises. The full-day course is scheduled at our venues and also available as group training in your school. 27 AUTOMATED EXTERNAL DEFIBRILLATION ½ DAYS (3 HOURS) 1 COURSE EVERY MONTH AUTOMATED EXTERNAL DEFIBRILLATION For group training in your school, please contact us for a quote. For each minute that passes without defibrillation after the heart stops, the casualty s chance of survival falls by about 10%. The Department for Education advises all schools to have an automated external defibrillator. Defibrillators are very simple to operate, and no previous first aid training is required. Crucially, this course will teach your defibrillator operators how to perform effective CPR. 28 ANAPHYLAXIS FIRST AID FOR SEVERE ALLERGIC REACTION ½ DAY (3 HOURS) ANAPHYLAXIS FIRST AID FOR SEVERE ALLERGIC REACTION For group training in your school, please contact us for a quote. Allergies affect approximately one in three of the UK population and each year numbers are increasing by 5% with as many as half of those affected being children. Anaphylaxis is the most severe form of allergic reaction. Common causes are foods, insect stings and some medication. It s life threatening and requires immediate first aid (an auto-injector) and emergency medical assistance. The likelihood is that someone in your school could have a severe allergy and this must form part of your first aid needs assessment. This course is approved by Allergy UK for anyone who needs training in how and when to use an auto-injector in the treatment of anaphylaxis. Course content: Auto-injector Communication and casualty care Primary survey Assessment: Continuous observation by the trainer. Resuscitation all ages Treatment of an unconscious casualty Understanding and recognising allergic reaction. Certification: Candidates receive a St John Ambulance certificate, valid for three years.

39 FIRE SAFETY SUPPLIES FOR YOUR SCHOOL In addition to having enough staff members trained to know what to do about preventing fire and dealing with fires if they occur (see pages 15-16), your school needs to be equipped with the right fire safety supplies. There are also some other key health and safety supplies that you will need in your school. FIRE SAFETY SUPPLIES THE RIGHT EQUIPMENT IN THE RIGHT PLACES You should carry out a fire risk assessment for all areas of your school premises. Different causes of fire require different types of fire extinguisher to combat them safely. In considering the fire risks in each area, you can determine which type of extinguisher is most appropriate. In addition to having the right types of fire extinguisher located around your school, you should consider where a fire blanket is more appropriate, for example in kitchen areas where there s a risk of fire from cooking oil.
