4 In Memory The month of January 2018 was a sad one for me and for Annie Williams Memorial Park. I feel it important that we officially acknowledge the loss of two great friends Del Bertram and Robert G. Allen. Del Bertram I first met Del a few years ago while serving on jury duty for a gruesome murder. He was kind, considerate and a rock for all of us during those rough months. We connected when he realized I was the Cathryn from the Park. There was a bigger connection - Del s Great Uncle Mike s great uncle was Dr. Williams how amazing that we were destined to meet up this way. We talked a lot about the Park and I gleaned a fair bit of history from him along with a few great photos he shared. The Bertram family has held a few family reunions in the Park over the years. Del stayed in touch with me and when the Sponsor A Tree program was started in 2015, he was right on board helping out. He lobbied Ontario Hydro (with whom he was employed) to sponsor 3 trees the black cedars close to the old picnic shelter. He also sponsored the lovely spruce next to the Williams cemetery IN MEMORY OF UNCLE JIM AND AUNT ANNIE FROM THE DESCENTS OF OF HOWARD & OLIVIA (nee WILLIAMS) BERTRAM. He volunteered for two days, dragged his cousin out with him to help and brought in 2 mini backhoes to help with the digging of holes and moving of trees. Del always had a smile and was willing to lend a hand when, as newly retired and a very new grandfather at the young age of 59, died very suddenly on January 12. It was a great honour for both me and Annie Williams Memorial Park to have known him. He will be missed. Robert G. Allen Although I knew who Robert was, I didn t really meet him until we did the Let Them Be Kids project in Annie Williams Park in Robert was enlisted as a volunteer to assist in the revitalization of the shoreline. As the go-to native species expert in Muskoka, he was vital in the choosing, sourcing and placement of all of those plants along the shores. His participation was crucial to the success of that part of our park makeover. I often conferred with Robert since then, on the appropriate trees to be planted in the Park and his expertise and knowledge, which he willingly shared, was amazing. So of course, when in November of 2015 we lost over 30 fully mature trees in a sudden wind storm, and the Sponsor A Tree program popped into my head, Robert was the guy I went to. Who else would agree to a project that we hoped would see 30 trees - but turned out to be almost 80 planted in one day. I know first-hand the great amount of thought, time, care and planning he put into that project from personally driving down to southern Ontario to hand pick all those trees for the Park, to providing the manpower and materials at little cost, to spending his birthday on a very hot May Sunday working his butt off. As a young boy, Robert grew up on Victoria Street and often played in the Park he would have been a mischievous young lad by the stories he told. He felt honoured as an adult to give back through these projects. On January 25, Robert Allen was vacationing in Jamaica a place he loved with friends, when his life was reclaimed by the waters. Robert was 57 years of age wife of Susan and father of Brady. Robert and I made a pact to meet at the Park on his birthday 10 years from the date of that big planting May and I had hoped to surprise him then with a special bench placed in his honour. The Park and all who enjoy the shade of the trees within have lost a great friend... Cathryn Willard, March 2018
