2 Federation Easter Basket Collection Once again, Federation will be putting together Easter baskets for those in need. They ask that each club please provide 1-2 baskets to the Extension office on Monday, March 26th. Federation will then shop for remaining items and add hams to the baskets prior to delivery. Your club s help with this project is appreciated. Food Stand Sign Update As some may recognize this sign as being in the 4-H Food Stand, we can all agree it needs some updating. Each club has a 7 foot x 4-5 foot panel they are able to update to reflect their club. This can be a creative group effort! Smaller sizes are available in different areas of the food stand. If your club is interested in updating a panel, please let Extension know and we will be in contact with further details. Give to 4-H while you shop! During February, shoppers can donate either $1 or $4 to 4-H at all JOANN stores. The donations will funnel back to the national and local 4-H programs. The Paper Clovers have a craft instruction on the back for customers to take home and try. Anyone donating a $4 Paper Clover will receive a $4 off coupon to use at JOANN on a return visit. 4-H will be in most Illinois JOANN stores from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 3 to make greeting cards and kick off the celebration! Are you a graduate of University of Illinois College of Agriculture, Consumer and Environmental Sciences? Share your excitement for U of I with a child you know. Participants will enjoy the college experience living in a residence hall, eating in the dining facilities and participating in educational classes on the College of ACES campus. This program will give you an opportunity to relive and share your college days as well as create new memories with your little Illini. ACES Family Academies is geared for children ages 8-13 years. Mark your calendars for July 12-13, and register after March Illinois 4-H is proud to support the efforts of the ACES Alumni Association. Build Your Future Logan Junior High School s 8th grade class recently participated in part of the Build Your Future curriculum. Students identified activities they enjoy and the skills learned from these activities. These were then applied to an assessment to illustrate career pathways that may fit their areas of skills and interests. Extension offers several College & Career Readiness programs to area schools.

4 Small Engine SPIN Club revs up The first meeting of the new Small Engine SPIN Club took place on Saturday, February 10th despite Mother Nature delivering a blanketing of snow. The club will meet once a month through May to learn about how an engine works, be able to identify parts of small engines, and gain hands-on experience in the disassembly and assembly of a small engine. Jack Becker, former 4-H Club leader, is leading the club with enthusiasm! He is delighted to pass on his knowledge of engines to future generations and help prepare participants for the 4-H Fair. STEM/STEAM After School Activities Once a month, Extension visits several after school programs to deliver STEM/STEAM curriculums. Locations include LaMoille, Ohio, Buda, and Neponset. Students enjoy a variety of activities, several themed to the season. During the most recent visit participants were teamed up to build catapults and see how far various items would fly. Students made predictions, engineered their catapults, saw the science of potential and kinetic energy in action, and practiced teamwork.

April is National Volunteer Week, and University of Illinois Extension 4-H Youth Development program wants to thank the more than 12,000 4-H adult and youth volunteers who guide and support the nearly 200,000 4-H participants in Illinois. National Volunteer Week is about inspiring, recognizing and encouraging people to seek out imaginative ways to engage in their communities. By working together, communities can meet challenges and accomplish goals. Illinois 4-H volunteers are empowering and preparing youth for success as 4-H members provide service to others and their community. Today s 4-H youth are engaged in learning activities as they are practicing skills employers want; growing and distributing food to communities in need; stewarding the natural resources; making a difference in local, state, national, and global issues; and influencing positive choices for healthy living. None of that would be possible without our Volunteers. In Bureau County, there are 47 volunteers who are inspiring youth involved in county and local 4-H club programs.

The Illinois 4-H Foundation will honor the 2018 Hall of Fame winners on Tuesday, Aug 14 in the Orr Building prior to the Sale of Champions festivities. Take the challenge and be ready4life Our mission in 4-H is to empower and prepare youth for successful futures. Now, we ve added an exhibit class that lets you show us what your future might be. Every project has a Ready4Life Challenge exhibit option. We created the challenge to encourage and recognize 4-H members who take their project to the next level by becoming experts on one or more of the careers related to the project or by starting a business using their project as the product, service, or tool of trade. Follow these steps: Enroll in a project area you like Prepare a physical/visual display representing your business, product, service, or career related to the project. Be prepared to offer verbal or written explanation that shows your knowledge of the related career or business, historical and emerging trends, requirements for success in the field and an action plan for preparation that may include items such as an educational pathway plan, a resume, and/or business plan. Just so you know, the judging for this class is MORE about your knowledge of the career/business side of the project and LESS about the skill in the project itself. For example, if you enter the Woodworking Ready4Life Challenge class, a judge will focus in on your knowledge of the woodworking business (training opportunities, your business plan, a portfolio of designs, etc.). Sure, they ll want to see something you ve made, but that WON T be the focus of their judging of the project.
