Q3/Q Volume 52, Issue 2 Page 15 In Memoriam In recent months, we lost two founding members of the SWVR Fred Griffin and Jim Pryce. In 2011, they were kind enough to answer a few questions and be Member Spotlight volunteers. Those articles are printed on the next few pages, in memory of our missed friends. James D. Pryce Jim Pryce, 80, of South Charleston, passed away suddenly at home on November 9, He was born in Cincinnati, Ohio on January 14, 1933, the son of the late John and Dorlena Pryce. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Sue Knight Pryce, special nephew William (Cyd) Dearien, sisters-in-law Mildred Compton and Betty Knight; niece Rebecca Parsley, nephews, Jay (Kristen) Knight, Paul (Libby) Patterson, Alan (Tina) Patterson and Mark (Mary) Williams. Jim was a 1951 graduate of Stonewall Jackson High School and attended Morris Harvey and WV State Colleges. He retired from Delta Foremost Chemical Corporation. He served in the U.S. Air Force from He was a charter member of the Southern WV Region Sports Car Club of America, and former member of the Porsche Club of America. In addition to competing in sports car club autocrosses, Jim enjoyed the calmness and satisfaction of nature photography. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 P.M. on Wednesday, November 13, at Wilson Funeral Home, 420 Lee Street, West, Charleston, with Bob Wood, Pastor of Bream Presbyterian Church officiating. Burial will follow at Spring Hill Cemetery. Jim was conscientious about informing us of the passing of other important club members. Below are some of Jim s forum posts. John Richard Calvert Dick Calvert passed away on Thursday August 29. (See obituary in Aug 30 Charleston Newspapers.) Dick was an early member of Sports Car Club of West Virginia and a charter member of SWVR SCCA. Participating in all activities and aspects of the region including rallies, autocrosses, and regional administration. He was a very early F/Vee racer holding an SCCA NATIONAL Competition License. His Sports car of choice was an Alpha Giulietta Spider. Dick served as chairman of several committees and was a multi time BOD member and RE in People like Dick, Fred Griffin, George Madgwick, John Saunby, John Hall, Skip Wilson and a few others were responsible for our early success, as well as SCCA's respect for our regional achievements. Jim Sad news re FRED GRIFFIN Fred Griffin died in his sleep last evening about 6:30 at CAMC General. He was taken there on dec. 18 For those who didn t know Fred, here is a little background. Fred joined the Sports Car Club of West Virginia in 1958, SCCA in Jan 1960 and of course was a charter member when we formed Southern West Virginia Region of SCCA later in He was RE in 1962 and member of the BOD several times after that. In 1963 he was the first recipient of the ELK BOWL and again in A four time winner of The Jack Hutchinson Award for rally excellence in 1961, 63, 65, 71. Best event in The RE award in 1986 which he shared with Jan, Mike Dudley and Robin Mease. Several autocross class championships in the Many rally class championships with John Hall and two with me, (Fred was the brain, I was the hired driver). In 1986 he and Jan won the Janie Brown Award for Marital Bliss in rallying. Fred cared a lot about the state of the region and was often disappointed with the direction SCCA was taking us. Always saying there were too damned many autocross categories and classes. A Porsche enthusiast to the core, he was a fifty year plus member of PCA and the 356 Registry, owning and competing in two 356s, a 914-6, two 911s and the first Boxster sold in West Virginia. He entered many PCA track events in the and the Boxster, including Mid Ohio, Nelson Ledges and V.I.R. as well as national and divisional rallies by SCCA and PCA. Jim Pryce Charter Member Passed Away (2011) Alexander (Alex) AKA (Zon) S. Giltinan, a charter and fifty year member of SWVRSCCA passed away on Dec 14th. See obituary in Dec 16 Gazette/Mail. Alex and his wife Carter donated the region's oldest award, The Jack Hutchinson award for excellence in rallying. Sadly the award hasn't been given since 1986 due to lack of interest. Rallys and Road racing were the primary reason we formed the region. Jim

Page 16 Rich Mixture Remembering Jim MEMBER SPOTLIGHT Jim Pryce In 1959, Jim and Sue were enjoying their new sports cars, a 59 MGA and a 59 AH Sprite, respectively. They were members of the Sports Car Club of WV, and together published the club s newsletter, Piston Patter. In September, 1960, they joined the SCCA (through the D.C. region), then later became SWVR members during it s inception in Sue set a couple of milestones thereafter, becoming our region s first elected secretary in 1961, and our first female RE in Jim was elected secretary in 1971, and held the RE position in 1967, 72, 87, 92, 93. Married in 1961, Jim and Sue recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. Jim is also a USAF veteran and was stationed in the Far East in during the Korean War, primarily at Nagoya Air Base, Japan. He later spent two years at McGhee-Tyson AFB, Tennessee before returning home to Charleston.

Q3/Q Volume 52, Issue 2 Page 17 Jim, Of the cars you ve driven, which were your favorites to autocross? Tough question. Liked most of them and there have been far too many MGBGT, Fiat 124s, Porsche O, X-19, Sciroccos, Preludes, CRXs, del Sol VTECH. MR2, Miata. Still don t have a handle on the Civic Si though. Of the cars you have yet to drive, which would you most like to autocross? Probably a Z06, but only on a course with soft, foam rubber cones, no solid objects or curbs. How many track days have you done, and what s your favorite track? Four VIR ( North course) x 2 VIR (Whole Course) and Mid Ohio. [Favorite] VIR s North course for track days in the Miata Nelson Ledges for racing days in the F/ Production MG midget. Most Fun, track days or racing has to be VIR-North. What other types of racing have you done? Club Racing Regional Comp. license 1962, 63 at Marlboro. National license 1979, Nelson Ledges x12, Summit Pt x 2. Had some wins, some DNFs, a few bumps and a heart attack at Nelson in 79. Who was most the most influential person you ve met while racing? Sue was impressed with Paul Newman..... Newman raced at Nelson Ledges often, Jay Coleman, Ralph Young and Mike Fletcher all SWVR racers, knew him fairly well. He entered a regional there with the London Cab (not a serious race car) in B Sedan, I guess for fun. I was in F/P in the same race group. We met in the impound area after the race he was 2nd in B/S I was 2nd in F/P. We often pitted in the same general area. Have some prints and 35mm slides somewhere. What are your thoughts on the sport today vs. back in the day? It was more fun then. Not as many classes and categories which meant more cars per class we had five hundred and more cars a season averaging fifty cars or more per event. We were lucky to have had more venues then, giving us more variety such as autocrosses at Kanawha (now Yeager) airport, some on snow. The ANG hill climb From 1970 until 2004 we had Payne Engineering s Gartersnake and a few years in there we enjoyed Payne s Peak Hill climb... Plenty of eager course workers without work/run groups. Meetings were entertaining and very well attended. In the early years we had the round robin gymkhanas/autocrosses at Watoga State Park on the dirt airfield (ahead of our time I guess.) There were road rallies, some at night and at least one two day fall rally/tour each year.

Page 18 Rich Mixture Remembering Fred MEMBER SPOTLIGHT Fred Griffin Passed Dec. 2012

Q3/Q Volume 52, Issue 2 Page 19 When did you join the club? I moved to Charleston summer of 1958 with my Karmann Ghia VW and soon found and joined Sports Car Club of West Virginia. In spring 1959 I joined SCCA Washington DC region, and then became automatically a member of Southern West Virginia Region when our region was chartered. What positions have you held? Vice President 1960 of our old Sports Car Club of WV, RE 1962 [Jan served as Ass't RE in '92 and Sec'y in '93]. What was your favorite autocross car? That would have to be my 1970 Porsche 914-6, bought new in 1970, enjoyed for 32 years, lotsa miles, lotsa events, and some successes. I really learned to drive in the 914-6, balanced and forgiving for me, no bad habits. Awards? Jack Hutchinson Award '61,'63,'65; Elk Bowl '63,'71,'86: These were all SWVR Regional awards. For several years back in there Jan and I did "Rich Mixture" and in 1986 won the National SCCA Best Regional Publication, Medium Region. I've been able to earn some year-end autocross awards, C production '71. A stock '72, '75, '78, '79. A street prep '84,'85. All in the ' Told you it taught me how to drive. Most desired car not yet driven? 911 Porsche GT3RS-4.0 How many track days have you participated in? 25, I think, most with Porsche Club, some with Quattro/Mazda. First was 1976 at Mid Ohio with PCA. I had long ago decided that I would not go club racing, but what's it like to really drive some of the purpose built road courses where we had spectated? It is wonderful good fun. The emphasis on "speed with safety", car prep, controlled passing zones, limited size run groups, personal responsibility, all done right. At least that was how MOR-PCA did it at Mid Ohio, some of the others not so much, particularly when drivers ed and club race practice got combined and club race already had their game face on. What is your favorite track? VIR's challenges done well (smooth and fast) are most satisfying, clumsy can ruin your day. Thoughts on the sport today verses back in the day: In the '50s and '60s the road rally was quite popular as an excuse to go for a ride in your sports car with a competition element included, but at legal speeds on public highways. Further developments included National rallys with rules for organizers (500 miles, two days, etc). I was privileged to compete in Johnny Appleseed National Rally '59 and '63, Appalachian National Rally '62, Virginia Reel National Rally '61, '62. '63. and '64. My navigator for all of the Virginia Reels was John Hall, and we finally achieved a trophy finish in '64. Entry was limited to 75 cars with awards to the top 10%. My small silver pitcher is engraved "seventh". Regionally, autocrosses became THE competitive events and great fun for me. That s the reason for having sports cars, isn't it? They can also be used to get to work. Fun first. Don't forget.
