2 PAGE 2 WAVE OF THE FUTURE: RHP Mark Appel, IF Tony Kemp and Hooks manager Rodney Linares have been selected to represent the Houston Astros in the SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game on Sunday, July 12, at Cincinnati's Great American Ballpark. Appel and Kemp will compete on the US squad. Linares is a member of the World Team s coaching staff. Appel, who was promoted to Triple-A Fresno on June 24, started 13 games for the Hooks this season, posting a 5-1 record and a 4.26 ERA. The Astros No. 1 overall pick in the 2013 draft overcame early season struggles and allowed just 4 earned runs over his final 23.1 innings before his promotion. A 5th-round pick by the Astros in the same 2013 draft, Kemp lit up scorecards and highlight reels with regularity in his 50 games with Corpus Christi this season. The winner of a 2014 MiLB Gold Glove spent time on SportsCenter s Top 10 for a diving play earlier this year and was hitting.358 with a.457 on-base percentage when he was called up to Fresno on June 11. Kemp went 0-for-4 against Sacramento last night, snapping his hit streak at 25 games, which is tied for the longest in the minors this season. Now in his 17th year in the Astros organization, Linares has been climbing the minor-league ranks as a manager. The 37-yearold is in his 9th season at the helm in the Houston system, previously managing Greenville, Lexington and Lancaster. Linares was promoted to head the Hooks after 3 years a High-A Lancaster, compiling a record and winning California League titles in 2012 and He was tabbed Cal League Manager of the Year in The trio joins these Hooks alums who have been selected to play in the showcase over the last 11 years: IF Jose Altuve (2011); MGR Keith Bodie (2013), C Jason Castro (2009); RHP Jarred Cosart (2011 & 2010), IF Carlos Correa (2013), OF Delino DeShields, Jr. (2013), RHP Michael Feliz (2014), RHP Jason Hirsh (2006), RHP Chia-Jen Lo (2009), RHP Jordan Lyles (2010), RHP Fernando Nieve (2005), LHP Troy Patton (2005), OF Hunter Pence (2006), OF Domingo Santana (2014), IF Jon Singleton (2012), George Springer (2013), C J.R. The 21-year-old from Seminole, Fla., appeared in the California League-Carolina League All-Star Game Tuesday. Phillips started in center and hit out the lead-off spot for the Cal League, going 1-for-2 with 2 RBIs. His team emerged with a 9-2 victory at LoanMart Field in Rancho Cucamonga, Calif. Phillips currently leads the California League in hits (93), extra-base hits (41), runs and total bases (171). He was promoted to the California League at the beginning of August and hit safely in his first 5 games with the JetHawks, going 11-for-22 at the plate. Phillips reached base in all but 3 of his 27 regular-season games with Lancaster, boasting a.980 OPS. Batted.324 with 5 runs, 3 doubles and 4 RBIs during the playoffs as the JetHawks won the California League Championship. Prior to his promotion to Lancaster, Phillips led the Midwest League in slugging percentage (.521) and outfield assists (14) while ranking 2nd in OPS (.883) and total bases (200). A MWL Mid- and Postseason All-Star, he also tied for 2nd in triples (12), tied for 4th in extra-base hits (46), and slotted 5th in batting average (.302) and runs scored (68). YARD WORK: Corpus Christi belted 3 home runs last night, marking the first time the Hooks hit more than 2 homers in a game since the club swatted 5 May 22 vs. Midland at Whataburger Field. During this 31-game span, Corpus Christi turned in just 3 multi-homer performances. The 5 extra-base hits Wednesday also signaled an offensive awakening for the Hooks. Corpus Christi hit.183 with 3 doubles and 1 home run while scoring 8 runs in the first 4 games of the series.
