1 REVIEW - SEASON IN REVIEW 2014 SEASON IN REVIEW The 2014 season was another historic campaign for the Durham Bulls, which saw the squad capture its seventh division title in the past eight seasons under manager Charlie Montoyo. Finishing the season with a record, the Bulls still became the first team in International League to clinch their respective division, and finished the season 9.0 games ahead of secondplace Gwinnett in the standings, the largest division lead in the IL. The Bulls began the season on a hot streak, jumping out to a 10-3 record and finishing the month of April at 19-9, which gave them the most wins in the league. The highlight of the month came on 4/26 vs. Scranton/WB, when southpaw Mike Montgomery tossed 8.1 no-hit innings, before righty Brad Boxberger retired the final two hitters for the third no-hitter in Durham s Triple-A history. In May the team slowed to a mark, but still led the division by 3.5 games through the end of the month. In June Durham suffered an record, highlighted by a season-long eight-game losing skid from 6/16-6/24. However, the rest of the IL South lagged as well, and the Bulls increased their division lead to 4.0 games entering July. Then, on 7/21 history was made yet again, as the Bulls defeated the Rochester Red Wings 5-1 at the DBAP. The win marked Montoyo s 614th as Bulls manager, setting the all-time franchise record for most wins. Over the remaining three months of the campaign Durham went 30-28, while their three division foes continued to struggle. On Aug. 25 the squad defeated Gwinnett 4-2 at the DBAP, clinching the division and sending the Bulls to the playoffs for the 13th time in 17 years as members of the International League. In the Governors Cup playoffs the Bulls downed the Columbus Clippers in the first round 3-1, after dropping the opener Ohio and trailing in the ninth inning in Game Two. In a rematch of the 2013 Governors Cup final won by Durham, the Bulls squared off against Pawtucket in the Governors Cup final and took a 2-1 series lead with the final two games played at the DBAP. The PawSox won a 4-2, 13-inning decision in Game Four to force a deciding game, and defeated the Bulls 4-1 to clinch their second title in three seasons. For the season, Durham spent 145-of-153 days with either a tie or sole possession of first place in the IL South, including holding sole possession for the final 102 days of the season. From June 1st on the team s division lead was never smaller than 3.5 games, and following the All-Star Break the team never led the division by fewer than 6.5 games. On the mound and at the dish the Bulls saw high strikeout numbers, as the pitching staff led the league and ranked fourth in Minor League Baseball with 1,220 punch outs, led by right-hander Nathan Karns who shared the league lead with 153 strikeouts, and righty Matt Andriese who ranked fourth on the circuit with 129. At the dish the offense struck out 1,198 times, also the most in the IL. At the plate the team was led by outfielder Mikie Mahtook, who set career highs in homers (12), doubles (33) and walks (46) while ranking fifth in the league with 143 hits. On June 24 after a promotion from Double-A Montgomery, outfielder Jeremy Moore went on to reach base safely in 47 of his 54 games with Durham, while cracking 12 homers over that span. By mid-june the Bulls had lost a number of key players from their opening day roster, including outfielders Kevin Kiermaier and Jerry Sands and shut-down relievers Brad Boxberger and Kirby Yates. In total 14 players were promoted to Tampa Bay in 2014, with Yates, Vince Belnome, C.J. Riefenhauser, Cole Figueroa and Curt Casali earning their first trips to The Show. Off the field, Durham Bulls Athletic Park hosted the 2014 Triple-A All-Star Game, and welcomed a franchise record 533,033 paid fans on the season, shattering the old record by more than 12,000.

He is the first Durham Bull in the Triple-A era to be enshrined in the league s Hall of Fame. With 613 victories in Durham, Evers won more games than any manager in club history. In the film Costner plays Crash Davis, a 12-year veteran of Minor League Baseball who was... in the show for 21 days once. The greatest 21 days of (his) life. His task with the Bulls is to transform a gifted, wild young pitcher into a Major League player, all the while chasing the minor league home run record. While filming, Costner was able to hit two home runs, and insisted on throwing out runners attempting to steal even when the cameras weren t rolling.
