With a victory today, the G-Braves would improve to 13-9 vs. Rochester all-time at Coolray Field. The club went 11-5 at home vs. the Red Wings from , but are just 1-4 since Walden, for Starters: After being pushed back a day, Atlanta Braves RHP Jordan Walden will make his second rehab start for Gwinnett today (1.0 IP). He has been on Atlanta s disabled list since 5/10 with a left hamstring strain (0-0, 2.92 ERA, 1 save in 14 games with ATL). Last Outing: Started and lost on Thursday vs. Columbus (0.2 IP, 1 H, 2 ER, 1 HR, 0 BB, 3 SO, 23 pitches, 14 strikes). After a strike-three wild pitch put Adam Abraham aboard with two outs, Walden allowed a two-run home run to former Braves teammate Elliot Johnson before exiting. With Gwinnett: Is 0-1 with a ERA (2 ER in 1.2 IP) in two career rehab outings, including 5/27/13 at Syracuse (1.0 IP, 1 SO) as he recovered from right shoulder inflammation. Red Wings Hold Off Rally in Game 1: The G-Braves failed to score over 6.0 innings against top Twins pitching prospect Alex Meyer, but scored twice in the eighth before ultimately falling 3-2 to the Rochester Red Wings last night at Coolray Field. Meyer (W, 4-2) yielded four hits and struck out eight, exiting with a 3-0 lead. The Red Wings backed him early as Eric Farris doubled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Deibinson Romero in the third inning and Eric Fryer and Farris added RBI singles in the fourth inning. All three runs were scored against RHP Yunesky Maya (L, 2-1), who allowed 11 hits on the night. Gwinnett ended the shutout against RHP Ryan Pressly (H, 4) in the eighth as Christian Bethancourt (1-for-4, 2 RBI) laced a two-out, two-run single scoring Phil Gosselin (1-for-4, R) and Jose Constanza (2-for-3, R). The G-Braves had the tying run in scoring position, but LHP Aaron Thompson (H, 4) retired Joey Terdoslavich (0-for-4) on a groundout to escape the jam. RHP Michael Tonkin (S, 4) struck out one over a perfect ninth inning to finish the game. Bethancourt s two-run single extended his hitting streak to a season-best six games he s batting.364 (8-for-22, 2 2B, 2 R, 2 RBI) on the streak, the longest active on the club. The Only Way is One: The G-Braves are now 12-8 (.600) in one-run games this season, tied for third in the 14-team IL. Last year, Gwinnett led all of Minor League Baseball with 59 one-run decisions (24-35,.407, 13 th in IL). Since 2009, the club is (.475) in one-run games. More on Maya: RHP Yunesky Maya entered last night s game with a 13.0-inning scoreless streak, and extended that streak to 15.1 innings before allowing Deibinson Romero s sacrifice fly with one out in the third it s the longest scoreless streak posted by a Gwinnett pitcher this season. Despite suffering his first loss as a G-Brave last night (6.0 IP, 11 H, 3 ER, BB, 4 SO, 112 pitches, 79 strikes), Maya turned in his third straight quality start (1-1, 1.42 ERA, 3 ER in 19.0 IP in that span). Scoring Drought: The G-Braves led the IL in team batting average (.274) and OPS (.745) and ranked third in runs scored (242) following an 8-3 win at Pawtucket on 5/27. After being blanked just once in their first 50 games, GWN has been shut out three times in the last 11 games: 5/28 at Pawtucket (3-0), 5/30 at Rochester (7-0) and 6/5 vs. Columbus (6-0). 14 BRAVES REPORT Sunday, June 8, 2014 vs. Rochester Page 14 Atlanta Braves 2014 Report For Games on Saturday, June 7 - System Overall (.485) Atlanta Braves (MLB) Record: 32-28, 1st Major League, National League One day after converting his franchise record 155 th save as an Atlanta Brave, Craig Kimbrel blew his third save of the season on Saturday night against the Arizona Diamondbacks. The right-hander allowed a walk and an RBI double to Aaron Hill in the ninth inning to even the game at 2-2. Atlanta regained the lead on a solo homer by Jason Heyward in the top of the tenth, but the bullpen faltered again in the tenth and finally in the 11 th, as they dropped the contest 4-3 in extra innings. The shaky bullpen effort spoiled a great start by right-hander Ervin Santana. He tossed 7.0 innings, allowing one unearned run on six hits. Offensively, Evan Gattis recorded three hits in five at bats, while Simmons added two hits and scored a run. Atlanta Leaders Wins: Julio Teheran, 6 ERA: David Hale,1.38 Saves: Craig Kimbrel, 16 BA: Tommy La Stella,.423 Runs: Freddie Freeman, 36 HR: Justin Upton, 13 RBI: Justin Upton, 34 SB: Two tied, 9 Mississippi Braves (AA) First Half Record: 36-26, 2nd Southern League, South Division It took heralded prospect J.R. Graham over two months and 13 starts to record his first victory of the 2014 season, but right-hander was dominant in his effort on Saturday night. Graham tossed 5.0 scoreless innings, scattering three hits and striking out three batters in the 1-0 win over Chattanooga. Graham made 74 pitches, tossing 48 for strikes. The M-Braves lone run came in the bottom of the second inning. With Matt Kennelly on third base, David Rohm hit an RBI groundout to give the M-Braves the lead and the win. Kyle Kubitza continued his dominant run at the dish, going 2-for-2 with a walk. The third baseman is batting.297 (55-for-185) with 15 doubles, two triples, three homers and 18 RBIs in 57 games for the M-Braves. Mississippi Leaders Wins: Aaron Northcraft, 7 ERA: James Hoyt, 1.30 Saves: James Hoyt, 4 BA: Elmer Reyes,.329 Runs: Kyle Kubitza, 34 HR: Seth Loman, 9 RBI: Seth Loman, 37 SB: Kyle Kubitza, 11 Lynchburg Hillcats (Advanced-A) First Half Record: 31-31, 2nd Carolina League, North Division After leaving the Salem Red Sox on the field on Friday night, the Red Sox returned the favor a day later as they clipped the Hillcats 7-6 on Saturday. Lucas Sims had a rough night for the Hillcats, as the former first round pick out of Brookwood High School (Ga.), allowed six runs on seven hits in 3.0 innings. He walked four batters and struck out one. The Lynchburg offense kept pace with Red Sox all night, recording 13 hits and going 6-for-16 with runners in scoring position, but it wasn t enough as Lynchburg fell to 3.5 games back of the front-running Potomac Nationals in the Carolina League North standings. With eight games remaining, the Hillcats chances of winning the first half North are very bleak. Lynchburg Leaders Wins: Lucas Sims, 5 ERA: Alex Wilson, 2.43 Saves: Alex Wilson, 6 BA: Jose Peraza,.331 Runs: Jose Peraza, 38 HR: Will Skinner, 4 RBI: Daniel Castro, 28 SB: Jose Peraza, 30 Rome Braves (A) First Half Record: 20-42, 7th South Atlantic League, South Division Rome returned to the field on Saturday night and split a doubleheader against the Greenville Drive. Ross Wilson and Victor ERA: Yean Carlos Gil, 2.26 Caratini led the way, recoding two RBIs each. Wilson continues to be a steady contributor to the R-Braves Saves: Pete Perez, 4 lineup, batting.314 with five RBIs in nine games since joining the squad. BA: Joey Meneses,.301 Runs: Johan Camargo, 27 Despite the hot bat of Wilson, who has hit in four straight, the R-Braves didn t have an answer for the Drive in the HR: Joey Meneses, 8 nightcap as Greenville won 5-3. Drive hurler Myles Smith (W, 2-4) tossed 5.0 innings, allowing three runs on six RBI: Jacob Schreder, 33 hits in 5.0 innings, while Pete Ruiz (S, 1) hurled 2.0 scoreless innings for his first save of the season in the SB: Blake Brown, 9 winning effort.
