GWN has been alone in fourth place in the IL South Division for the past 21 days they trail Durham (18-11) by 4.5 games, Norfolk (15-13) by 2.0 games and Charlotte (14-13) by 1.5 games. The G-Braves went 2-6 vs. Lehigh Valley in 2014, including 2-2 at Coca-Cola Park. Gwinnett has won the road series with the IronPigs just twice since 2009 (3-1 in 2009, 4-0 in 2010). G-Braves Rally, Fall in Ninth: The G-Braves scored three runs in the top of the ninth to erase a 2-0 deficit, but allowed two runs in the bottom half to lose 4-3 to the Lehigh Valley IronPigs last night at Coca-Cola Park. The Current Road Trip (2-2) IronPigs built a 2-0 lead on a sixth-inning solo home run by Maikel Franco off LHP Manny Banuelos and an eighth-inning RBI double by Russ Canzler off RHP John Cornely. In the ninth, Gwinnett ended the shutout as Todd Cunningham (1-for- 4, 2B, R) doubled and scored on a single by Cedric Hunter (2- DATE 5/5 at SWB 5/6 at SWB 5/7 at SWB 5/8 at LHV RESULT W, 3-1 L, 3-5 W, 5-0 L, 3-4 for-4, 2B, R, RBI). Adonis Garcia (2-for-4, R), who singled after 5/9 at LHV Cunningham, scored the tying run on a wild pitch by RHP Colton 5/10 at LHV Murray (BS, 2, W, 1-1). Daniel Castro (0-for-2, RBI) plated the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly scoring Hunter. The 3-2 lead wouldn t stand, however, as RHP Aaron Kurcz (BS, 2, L, 0-2) yielded a one-out single to Jordan Danks, a grounder by Edgar Duran that 1B Barrett Kleinknecht misplayed for an error, and a walk-off two-run double to Brian Bogusevic. With the loss, GWN dropped to 4-4 (.500) in games decided in last at-bat fashion and 3-2 (.600) in games decided by walk-off this year the club also fell to 6-5 (.545, 7 th in IL) in one-run games. Franco s solo homer off Banuelos in the sixth ended GWN s season-best 19.0-inning scoreless streak the pitching staff hadn t allowed a run since the fourth inning on 5/6 at Scranton/WB. Magnificent Manny: LHP Manny Banuelos turned in his second straight quality start last night, working 6.0 IP (7 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 HR, 1 BB, 6 SO, 86 pitches/58 strikes) in a no-decision. He saw his rotation-best 13.1-inning scoreless streak snapped on Maikel Franco s homer in the sixth. Banuelos has pitched 6.0 innings in each of his last three starts, going 1-0 with a 2.50 ERA (5 ER in 18.0 IP) in that span. It s the first time he s worked 6.0-plus innings in three straight starts since doing so in four straight starts with Class-A Charleston from 6/12/09-7/4/09. Rated Atlanta s No. 11 prospect by MLB.com, Banuelos is 2-0 with a 3.06 ERA (11 ER in 32.1 IP), a.230 BAA (26-for-113, 2 HR) and two quality starts (tied for team lead) in six starts with Gwinnett. May Mastery: After going 8-13 with a 3.74 ERA (77 ER in IP) in 21 games in April, Gwinnett pitchers are 5-2 with a 1.32 ERA (9 ER in 61.1 IP) in seven games thus far in May. The GWN staff has posted scoreless streaks of 17.0-IP (5/1-5/3) and 19.0-IP (5/6-5/8) this month. Starting pitchers are 4-1 with a 1.60 ERA (7 ER in 39.1 IP) and four quality starts this month. Relievers are 1-1 with a 0.82 ERA (2 ER in 22.0 IP), one hold and one save (1-for-2) this month. The Great Adonis: INF/OF Adonis Garcia went 2-for-4 last night, extending his hitting streak to eight games. He s batting.419 (13-for-31, 2 2B, 5 R, 5 RBI, SB) on the streak dating back to 4/30, his second eight-game hitting streak this season (also from 4/10-4/18,.355, 11-for-31). Garcia s 10 th multi-hit game moved him from fourth to third in the International League in batting (.362) he also ranks among IL offensive leaders in hits (T-6 th, 34) and RBI (T-10 th, 15). Talking Streaks: 2B Jose Peraza (0-for-4) and 1B Barrett Kleinknecht (0-3) both saw six-game hitting streaks ended last night. Peraza (.462, 12-for-26, 3B, 4 R, 4 RBI, 6 SB) and Kleinknecht (.435, 10-for-23, 2B, HR, 5 R, 6 RBI) both posted their streaks from 5/1-5/7. Saturday, May 9, 2015 at Lehigh Valley Page 2 Castro Headlines Roster Moves: Yesterday, the Atlanta Braves sent SS Daniel Castro to Gwinnett from Double-A Mississippi as part of five moves affecting the G-Braves roster. Additionally, LHP Donnie Veal, DFA d by Atlanta on 5/5, was assigned to Gwinnett and C Jose Yepez was activated off the DL. INF Sean Kazmar and SS Elmer Reyes were both placed on the DL. Castro batted.389 (35-for-90, 5 2B, 17 R, 10 RBI, 4 SB) in 23 games for the M-Braves this season. He won Mississippi s April Player of the Month Award from Atlanta after batting.348 (24-for-69) in 18 games last month. In the Show: Two members of Gwinnett s Opening Day starting rotation are now in the Majors with Atlanta. RHP Mike Foltynewicz was recalled on 5/1, and RHP Williams Perez was recalled less than a week later on 5/6. Foltynewicz is 2-0 with a 5.23 ERA (6 ER in 10.1 IP) over his first two MLB starts with Atlanta. Rated by MLB.com as the Braves No. 3 prospect, Folty went 0-3 with a 2.03 ERA (5 ER in 21.2 IP) and one CG in four starts with Gwinnett. As of 5/1, he ranked among IL leaders in strikeouts (1 st, 30), SO/9.0 IP ratio for starters (1 st, 12.46), CG (T-2 nd, 1) and ERA (14 th, 2.08). It is his 172 nd career minor league start (191 st appearance). Smith moves into the rotation to fill the spot vacated by RHP Williams Perez (recalled by Atlanta on 5/6). All three of Smith s prior appearances for Gwinnett have been in relief, where he is 1-1 with a 3.00 ERA. Vs. Lehigh Valley: Smith faces the Lehigh Valley IronPigs, his former team, for the first time in his professional career tonight. He has not faced LHV in any of his other 17 outings in the IL with Scranton/WB and Pawtucket.
