1 76th ANNUAL WORLD SERIES July 30-August 13, 2010 National Baseball Congress Wichita, Kansas 2010 NBC WORLD SERIES OFFICIAL SCORER'S REPORT Part 1. Championship game recap Resiliency: the ability to bounce back from adversity. The Liberal (Kan.) Bee Jays used that trait in a big way, defeating the Seattle (Wash.) Studs 9-6 in the championship game of the 76th annual National Baseball Congress World Series. Liberal's title, its first since 2000, is the fifth for the Bee Jays. The BeeJays overcame deficits in three of its first five wins, then bounced back from a 5-0 loss to Seattle in the quarterfinal round to finish with a 7-1 record. Joe Vaskas went 4-for-5, scored three runs and knocked in three to lead a 15-hit Liberal attack. He hit a two-run homer in the first that helped the BeeJays to a 3-0 advantage, then scored on Sam Konnoff's base hit in the fifth to give Liberal the lead for good. Blake Bergeron went 2-for-5 with two RBIs, including an RBI triple in the sixth as the Bee Jays scored a pair of insurance runs. Tyler Sturges, the second of three Bee Jay pitchers, got the win while Tomas Cruz squelched two potential Seattle rallies in pitching 3.1 innings of shutout relief with five strikeouts to get a save. The Studs (6-2), who finished second for the second time in the past three years, used a tworun homer from Kevin Corrigan and a grand slam from Kyle Boe in the fourth inning to wipe out a 6-0 deficit. Seattle put two runners on in the sixth and seventh innings, but Cruz thwarted the Studs each time. David Benson, the third of four pitchers, took the loss after allowing the last three runs. Taylor Thompson pitched the final 2.1 innings to run his tournament scoreless streak to 17.1 innings. Part 2: Tournament statistics

2 Tournament offense: doing more with less The 2010 NBC World Series saw the smallest field since the modern wood era began in 2000, and was the first time since 1997 that the size of the field was 32 teams. The 32 teams had been a long-term tournament staple until the number of qualifiers pushed the field into the 40+ team category for a number of years. It was a good thing, too, since the near-daily parade of 100+-degree days made it hard for man, beast and (especially) computers. Home runs, which seemed non-existent in 2009, nearly quadrupled in the 2010 tournament. Fifty-eight homers were hit, which was second only to the 76 hit in The number of homers per game (.92) nearly matched the.94 average in There were six grand slams in the tournament, exceeding the 2007 total of four. Santa Barbara CA had 11 homers, matching the total of Havasu AZ in The middle innings were the best time to see a ball sent into a long flight, with 26 total between the fourth through sixth innings. Other offensive totals rebounded significantly from Tournament batting was.280, again the second highest in the wood era since the.291 average in Runs per game: in 2010; in 2006 Hits per game: in 2010; in 2006 Stolen bases per game set a record in 2010, with 3.49 per game surpassing the 3.16 done in 2002 (the 78.9% success rate bettered the 78.6% done in 2004 and The San Diego Stars had a wood-era record.379 team batting average, breaking the old record of.373 set by Kenai AK in Twelve teams batted.300 or better (up four from last year), while four teams batted under.200 (one more than last year). Two of the teams that batted under.200, Everett WA (.148 average) and Rock City (.128), failed to score a run. The Denver CO Bombers hit somewhat better at.227, but also failed to score, making it three teams that were shut out (a wood-era high). Tournament pitching: Arm and hammered Tournament pitching bore the brunt of the increased offense, rising above 5.00 for the first time in the wood era at Only two teams had an ERA under 2.00, but neither of them were around for very long. The Denver Bombers had the lowest team ERA at 1.69, allowing only three earned runs (of four total), but not scoring any runs made them loom too large. Three other teams finished with an ERA under 3.00, but the team awarded the pitching trophy, Santa Barbara CA, was not found in that number. The Foresters had a team ERA at 2.21 before the semifinals, but exited with a 3.34 grade after being torched for 10 earned runs in an 11-6 loss to Seattle. Ironically, El Dorado KS, which was awarded the team pitching title despite not having the lowest ERA among the qualifiers, had the lowest ERA at Two teams had an ERA over 10.00, with Katy TX the worst at Eleven different teams had shutouts, while the 10 saves in the tournament was a wood-era low (as well as the.14 save per game average). Tournament fielding: More glove, less iron After staying around for the past five tournaments, tournament fielding in this year's NBC World series rose to a wood-era level of.960 (it was as high as.963 before retreating to the final total). Errors per game (2.97) dipped below 3.00 for the first time in the new wood era. However, double plays per game fell to 1.51 per game, higher than only the 1.45/game registered in Four teams had a tourney-low two errors, including fielding champion Derby at.989. At the other extreme, four teams had at least 10 errors, with runner-up Seattle the highest with 16 and champion Liberal tied for second with 12. The Bee Jays turned a tournament-high eight double plays. For the second year in a row, no team had fielding under.900, with Greeley CO grading the lowest at.912.

3 Errorless games (five): Plaza Tire MO-Seattle WA (#19), Denver Cougars-Rock City NC (#25) San Diego Force-Kenai AK (#34), League City TX-Kenai (#41), San Diego Stars-Austin TX (#46),. Haysville KS-Liberal (#56) had the most errors with eight, with the Bee Jays charged with five. There was one triple play turned: by the Wichita KS Elite Sluggers against Kenai (#26). Time of games: Faster Tournament game times were a couple of minutes faster than last year (2:16 to 2:18). Games were on a 2:12 pace, but the final nine games added nearly four minutes to the average. Sixteen games lasted under 2:00, with another 16 lasting between 2:00-2:15. Just 10 games were over 2:45, of which two were over 3:00. One of those was the second semifinal between Seattle and Santa Barbara (#62), which lasted 3:02; the other was Derby-Crestwood (#37), which went 12 innings and 3:23. Quickest game of the tournament: San Diego Stars-Austin Gold Sox (#46), 1:20. Average margin of victory: significantly closer The average margin of victory rose from 4.01 to There were 13 games decided by one run (down from 22 last year), with eight more settled by two runs. Only five games had a margin of 10 or more runs. Thirteen games had a five-run margin, as many as the one-run games. The tournament saw the introduction of the eight-run lead rule after seven innings, the first such rule since the six-run rule after seven innings was discontinued in That rule was invoked nine times in the tournament, which brought the number of shortened games to 12 (three called on the 10-run lead rule after the fifth or sixth inning). However, it's one thing to have the rule available; it's another matter to attain it: only one of the last 17 games were called on a run rule. Just five games required extra innings, with Derby-Crestwood (#37) the longest at 12 innings. Miscellany In addition to the triple play that the Elite Sluggers pulled off against Kenai (#26), the 76th annual tournament saw a double negated on an appeal play, a batting out of order sequence that was not appealed; and two penalty ball fours. This tournament was the first time since 2003 that there were no undefeated teams in the finals (five of the past six champions went undefeated, with Prairie Gravel in 2005 the lone exception). It didn't seem like much of a benefit with the string of 100-plus degree days, but there were no rain delays in the tournament. The three San Diego teams Force, Waves and Stars almost pulled off a trifecta by winning on Aug. 3, but the Waves lost to Valley Center 4-3. Part 3: Multi-State League Report Kansas once again provided the most teams to the tournament with seven. Colorado and Missouri, with five each, passed California for second place. California and Texas each fielded four. Washington had two teams, while five others sent in one team. In its other wins, the Bee Jays bounced back from deficits several times, including its final two wins after a 5-0 loss to runner-up Seattle (WA) in the quarterfinals. The Studs erased a 6-0 lead in the championship game, but Tomas Cruz added a save to two earlier wins to help Liberal prevail.
