WSU APPOINTMENT: August, 2000 WSU RESPONSIBILITIES: Head baseball coach. SPOUSE: Hollie CHILDREN: Bryn (2/6/86, 18) and Brady (9/25/93, 10) Tim Mooney, who won nearly 70 percent of his games and a national title before taking over Washington State s baseball program, enters his fourth Cougar season after being appointed head coach in August Mooney left NAIA powerhouse Albertson College with the belief the Cougar program will return to the kind of respect and prominence it enjoyed for decades. Mooney knows competing in the tough Pacific-10 Conference doesn t make his coaching life easy, but he enters his fourth season with great anticipation, thanks to six returning starters and another solid recruiting class. Mooney resurrected the Albertson College program in 1987 when the school decided to bring back baseball after several seasons without a program. In the next 14 years he achieved a success level far exceeding anyone s hopes or expectations. Included was the 1998 NAIA National Baseball title, finishing the year with a 29-1 conference record and a 55-8 overall mark. In his 14 seasons at the school, Mooney s baseball teams won 68.9 percent of their games and established themselves as one of the elite NAIA teams nationally, competing in the national tournament three straight times, 1998, 1999 and I am extremely excited to have a person of Tim Mooney s caliber and character leading our baseball program, WSU Athletic Director Jim Sterk said in announcing his appointment. In the end we think Tim s ability to build a program, his knowledge of the Northwest and its recruiting base, and his excitement for leading the program will take Cougar baseball in the right direction and make the program competitive in the Pac-10. Mooney, who replaced six-year Cougar coach Steve Farrington, is just the fifth WSU baseball coach since 1927, a span of 77 years. His predecessors include Bobo Brayton, , and Buck Bailey, , whose names grace the home diamond for WSU, Bailey-Brayton Field C O U G A R B A S E B A L L

3 To be offered the position at Washington State is a dream come true, Mooney says. It makes me feel special. I want to build on top of the tradition and successes Buck Bailey and Bobo Brayton accomplished. Because this is such a super special opportunity, I was willing to move my family after being a part of the Albertson community for 19 years, offered Mooney. The new Cougar head coach received his bachelor s degree in 1980 from the University of Idaho and also received his master s degree in sports science from Idaho. Mooney was a member of the Vandals last baseball team. With the exception of one year teaching and coaching at Jerome (Idaho) High in 1981, Mooney was affiliated with Albertson College, originally known as the College of Idaho, since his graduation from Idaho. This (WSU) is not only a job, but a program I have respected since I was a player at Idaho, Mooney said. I knew then it was a family at WSU, not just a place to play ball and go to school. When the opportunity to actually become a part of that family was there, I jumped to apply. Mooney joined the physical education staff at Albertson College in 1982 as a teacher and five years later was named head baseball coach when the sport was reinstated at the collegiate level. While dominating the Cascade Conference with a record over the league s eight years, Mooney built an enviable program that produced 527 wins and the 1998 NAIA World Series championship. The Coyotes were in postseason playoffs each of his 14 years, plus the aforementioned three straight NAIA Championship appearances. His overall record was The 1998 NAIA coach of the year has also garnered numerous teaching awards during his tenure at Albertson College and was a tenured professor in the physical education department. He was elected in the spring of 2000 as president of the Albertson Faculty Association and twice served as chair of the physical education department, and Tim and Hollie Mooney have two children, Bryn (18) and Brady (10). 4 RYAN BRUST Assistant Coach DON MARBUT Assistant Coach Ryan Brust joined the Washington State baseball coaching staff in the fall of 2002 to tutor the Cougar pitching staff. Brust is no stranger to baseball on the West Coast, having spent five years at the University of Portland, two years at the community college level and four years as a pitcher at the University of Santa Clara. The Nevada native grew up in Carson City, where he was twice an allleague shortstop. The 1989 Carson High graduate also earned all-league honors in basketball, but baseball was his passion. In 1989 as a senior he led Carson to the CABA World Series championship and at the conclusion of the series was named the most valuable player. In the fall of 1989 Brust enrolled at Santa Clara, embarking on a fouryear career as a pitcher, rather than middle infielder. The first year with the Broncos Brust developed into the ace of the team s bullpen. He worked 44 innings in relief and struck out 44 batters. The next year he became a Bronco starter and for three seasons was a regular on the mound for Santa Clara in the West Coast Conference. The former WCC of the Week finished his career ranked among the school leaders for starts and innings pitched. After graduating from Santa Clara in 1993 with a bachelor s degree in business management, he attended Gonzaga, earning his master s degree in administration of physical education and athletics in For two seasons, 1996 and 1997, Brust was the pitching coach for the Community Colleges of Spokane. He then joined the staff of the Portland Pilots in 1998, spending five seasons with the WCC team. While with the Pilots Brust developed one of the best pitching staffs in the league. His first staff struggled in WCC play and finished last in team ERA at The next year Brust s staff became a force in the league and completed the last-to-first finish by posting a league-leading 5.13 ERA. In league play they were even better, finishing with a 4.17 ERA. Several of his pitchers rank among Portland s best, including all-conference honorees Kyle Bebout and Matt Hollod. Bebout s five saves during the 2000 season ranks sixth on Portland s top 10 list and his seven career saves is also sixth. During his career Bebout made 62 appearances, the fourth most ever by a Pilot pitcher. Brust is married to the former Heather Byrne. BRENT FATTORE Assistant Coach In the fall of 2003 Brent Fattore joined the Cougar baseball program as a volunteer assistant coach. Fattore came to WSU from Bellevue Community College where he helped coach BCC to a record in The Renton, Wash. native graduated from Hazen High School in After graduation Fattore took a year off from baseball and enrolled at Washington to pursue a business administration degree. The latest addition to Washington State s baseball coaching staff is highly successful community college coach Don Marbut, who joined the staff the summer of 2003 after four years at Edmonds Community College. Marbut coaches infielders and coordinates WSU s recruiting. The Cougar assistant coach won 80 percent of his games at Edmonds CC, beginning in During his tenure the Tritons won 152 games, lost 38, and captured the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges championship in both 2002 and In his final year at the Edmonds school, he guided the club to a 43-7 record, the best mark ever achieved in the NWAACC. Marbut s coaching skills were recognized each of his four years at Edmonds CC. In 2000, 2001 and 2003 he was named coach of the year for the Northern Division of the NWAACC. He won the same honors for the entire league in 2002 and Prior to taking over at Edmonds CC, spent one year as the head assistant coach at Bellevue Community College. That club captured the NWAACC Northern Division title in His coaching career began as head assistant coach at Capital High School in Olympia, Wash. In 1998, he assisted in leading the Cougars to victory in the 3A State championships. Marbut, originally from Aberdeen, Wash., graduated from Aberdeen High School in 1992, where he earned All-Black Hills League honors in baseball three times. He also earned all-league honors three times in football and once in basketball. During his high school career, Marbut set a total of six school records in three sports. Marbut began his collegiate career at Edmonds Community College in While competing for Edmonds CC, he was named to the All- NWAACC team twice as an infielder, 1994 and He was also named team MVP in Following two outstanding years at Edmonds CC Marbut transferred to Portland State University, where he earned a degree in social sciences in While competing for the Vikings, Marbut was selected team MVP and was a All-Pacific-10 North infielder in In 1997, he was selected as team captain and also was the president of Portland State s athletic advisory board. In his first season with the Cougars, Marbut helped WSU sign 12 players to scholarship offers for the 2005 season. The list of recruits includes 11 high school players from the State of Washington. Marbut tutored former Cougar pitching ace Tony Banaszak at Edmonds, along with three members of this year s WSU team, Zach Kosturos and Kaeo Rubin and Aaron Trolia. Rubin was named MVP of the NWAACC tournament last spring. The Cougar assistant and his wife Jennifer have one daughter, Avery Shay. Following his year long hiatus from the sport Fattore could not shake the baseball bug and in 1998 enrolled at Shoreline Community College to play baseball. At Shoreline he played two seasons at first base and in the outfield, boasting a.997 fielding percentage. Fattore graduated from Washington in 2001 and worked for a year, but then decided he wanted to coach. In 2002 he served as an assistant coach for Hazen High, where he coached the outfielders and hitters. He also coached the Poulsbo RV 18-year old select team out of Bellevue in the summers of 2002 and Fattore?s Poulsbo team had a record, and won the West Coast Summer Series in Carlsbad, Calif. In 2003, Fattore joined the staff at Bellevue CC as a coach, assisting with the outfielders and hitters, along with first base coaching responsibilities C O U G A R B A S E B A L L
