2 Head Coach Tony Vittorio Tony Vittorio has solidified himself as one of the UD baseball program s greatest managers. This claim is backed by a resume that includes a pair of school-record setting 32-win seasons and UD s only two trips to the Atlantic 10 Championship as well as a series victory over #19/20 Notre Dame this season, the highest ranked opponent ever beaten by Dayton in program history. However, Vittorio ( , at UD) would give many reasons why those numbers represent a starting point rather than a destination for a program that had only one winning season in the decade prior to his arrival. In 2002, UD shattered record after record, boasting school-highs in strikeouts (332) and wins (32), as well as an April 16 win over IPFW that gave Vittorio his 300th career victory. A year earlier, Vittorio guided Dayton to its first winning season in three years, setting a single season school record for victories with 32, while leading Dayton to its first berth in post-season play since joining the A-10 in Vittorio By The Numbers Overall Conference Year Record Record at Lincoln Trail overall at IPFW overall at UD Overall th year * Vittorio ranks fifth in both wins and winning percentage amongst active coaches in the Atlantic 10. 3 Flyers Third In A-10 Preseason Coaches Poll Dayton was picked to finish third in the Atlantic 10 West Division in the A-10 Preseason Coaches Poll. UD was slotted behind two-time A-10 West winner Richmond and 2004 A-10 West Champion George Washington. Bring It Home Dayton competes this season hoping it will be at home May as Fifth Third Field hosts the 2005 A-10 Baseball Championships. The home of Dayton Dragons, the Class A affiliate of the Cincinnati Reds, is less than two miles from UD s campus in downtown Dayton. Strength of Schedule In 2005, the Flyers will face a total of four teams that advanced to the NCAA Tournament last season. They will also play 10 opponents that placed either first or second in their conference in Dayton is 3-2 this season against 2004 NCAA Tournament teams. Construction Complete on TWC Stadium During the offseason numerous upgrades were made to complete the construction of the $4 million Time Warner Cable Stadium along I-75. The additions include a press box, covered chair back seating behind home plate and restrooms. Construction To Begin On Courtyard by Marriott, University of Dayton Construction will begin this spring on a new hotel on Edwin C. Moses Boulevard, across from the Time Warner Cable Stadium. It will be the first hotel development within the city of Dayton since the early 1980s and will house 102 rooms. Work will begin in April and should be completed in Making a Difference for MDA At each Flyer weekend home game, a collection will be taken to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association. At the end of the season the total, which will be matched by the UD baseball team, will be presented to the MDA while the Flyers work at the annual MDA telethon on Labor Day Weekend. Atlantic 10 Recognizes Benoit, Trubee On Feb. 14, William Benoit was named A-10 Player of the Week while Luke Trubee earned Pitcher of the Week honors. Benoit hit.444 with a HR, three RBI and four runs scored in the series at Wofford. Trubee won the finale of a Feb. 12 doubleheader with a complete game, three-strikeout day. Getty Also Honored By Atlantic 10 Conference On Feb. 28, Bobby Getty was also named A-10 Player of the Week after Dayton won two of three games from #19/20 Notre Dame. The sophomore had seven hits in 13 at bats while scoring five runs, walking four times and collecting three RBI during the threegame series played in Mesa, AZ. Flyers Packing a Pop UD was fourth in the A-10 in both team batting average and slugging percentage last season. This year, the Flyers are hitting.305 as a team with 36 extra base hits including 13 home runs. Five For Fighting This season, Dayton is 6-0 when scoring at more than five runs and 3-5 when held to five runs or less. Streaking Flyers Redshirt junior Roberto Ramos has the longest current hitting streak on the team at four consecutive games. Galen Schumm and Michael DeLuca also have three game streaks entering Thursday s contest. William Benoit began the year with a nine-game hitting streak and has hit safely in 12 of 14 games this season. All Begins With Massa UD leadoff batter Michael Massa has reached base 10 of the 28 times (35.7 percent) he has begun a inning at the plate for UD and has scored eight of those times. Beginning With A Bang With a crowd of over 600 Wofford fans on their feet to begin a Saturday doubleheader on Feb. 12, sophomore Michael Massa smacked a hard line drive up the middle for a single on the first pitch of the Flyers season. The hit quieted the crowd and was the first in a 3-for-5 game for Massa to open the year. More From Massa Sophomore shortstop Michael Massa was named one of the team s captains this fall. He was fourth on the team with a.308 average in 49 games played during his first collegiate season last year. Massa also ranked second in stolen bases, third in runs scored and fourth in on base percentage. In 2005, He is second on the team in runs scored with 12 and holds a.323 OBP. Hoping For An Encore Performance Senior outfielder Brandon Godzik led the Atlantic 10 with a.407 batting average last season, a mark that was 18th best in NCAA Division I. He was selected as the Preseason A-10 Player of the Year by both Collegiate Baseball and Baseball America after leading the Flyers with nine home runs,.478 OBP,.654 slugging percentage and 53 RBI. This year, he is second on the team in RBI and runs scored. He is also one of seven Flyers regulars with a batting average above.300. Godzik, A Self Starter For The Flyers While Brandon Godzik is best known for driving in runners during a UD rally, he also leads the team by reaching base nine of the 12 times he has begun an inning at the plate and has scored five of those times. The senior outfielder has a.466 on base percentage this season and leads the team with 12 walks. McSoley Missed Redshirt sophomore Joe McSoley started the first six games last season at shortstop before an injury forced him to sit out the remainder of the season. This year when he plays well, so do the Flyers. In UD s nine wins this season, McSoley has a.531 average with two doubles, six home runs, 15 runs scored and 19 RBI. McSoley Makes His Mark Whether or not Joe McSoley will become a power hitter has yet to be seen, but the redshirt sophomore made his case in the second game of a Feb. 12 doubleheader at Wofford. McSoley hit a pair of two-run home runs to lift UD to a 5-2 win over the Terriers. His first blast came in the second inning when he drove a ball over the left centerfield fence. The other came in the top of the final inning as he pulled a pitch down the left field line. Flyers Record When... 4 Defining Moments for Flyer Baseball Each UD player is rewarded for a defining moment both on the field and off with an emblem in their locker. The award began as a tribute to a brother of freshman Jeff Mercer who was diagnosed with a brain tumor. A second emblem was given to each player who finished the Fall semester with at least a 3.0 GPA. The following is a list of players who have been rewarded for a defining moment since the beginning of the season. Name Date Reason Notes William Benoit Feb. 12 GW home run He smashed a solo home run to left center to put Dayton ahead for good at Wofford (2nd game) Bryan Chandler March 12 GW Triple His two-rbi triple in the sixth iced the game for the Flyers (1st game) Michael DeLuca Feb. 19 Slash Bunt His successful slash bunt ignited a six-run sixth inning Flyer rally (2nd game) Michael Massa Feb. 12 Leadoff AB He led off the season with a single up the middle on the first pitch he saw (1st game) Jeff Mercer Feb th inn. When YSU s Eric Shaffer came on to begin the fourth inning in relief in the second game of a doubleheader on Feb. 19, McSoley hit the reliever s first collegiate pitch for a home run over the left field wall to tie the score at 2-all en route to a 3-for- 4 game with two runs scored and two RBI. A Good Beginning For Benoit Junior William Benoit was named A-10 Player of the Week on Feb. 14 and began the season with a nine-game hitting streak. He was the only Flyer to hit safely in each of the first nine games this season. During the streak, he hit.452 with five multiple-hit games. He also had a.677 slugging percentage with five runs and seven RBI. Benoit has hit safely in 12 of 14 games this season as leads the team with a.378 average. Making The Most Of His Hits Junior designated hitter William Benoit came into the season hitting just.219 with two doubles and eight RBI during his first two seasons as a Flyer. This year, he leads the team with a.378 average,.533 slugging percentage and is fourth with a.442 on base percentage. Three of his 17 hits have been for extra bases and he has struck out just five times. Bringing Schumm Power Junior College transfer Galen Schumm has added some pop near the top of the UD lineup while playing solid defense at second base. He earned All-Conference and All-Region honors as part of a team at Olney Central JC last season. He has a.340 average with.424 OBP this season and has started all 14 games at second base. Rohren Ready To Break Out JC transfer Craig Rohren had just two hits in 22 at bats during his first nine games of the season. However, the junior first baseman has begun to match the NJCAA All-Region accolades he earned last year at Kankakee CC. This year, he is hitting.167 with three doubes, three runs scored and three RBI. Ready To Get ty Going Another transfer from Olney Central JC, Bobby Getty patrols center field for the Flyers this season. He ranked seventh in the NJCAA in hitting last season with a.465 mark while being named to the All-Conference and Academic All-American teams. This year, he is hitting.353 (3rd on team) and is second on the squad in on base percentage at.452. A Memorable Weekend For Getty Sophomore Bobby Getty was named A-10 Player of the Week on Feb. 28 after leading UD to two wins in three games versus #19/20 Notre Dame. Getty had seven hits in 13 at bats with five runs scored, four walks and three RBI in the series. Hepner At Home Behind The Plate Senior Aaron Hepner has started 101 games at catcher for the Flyers over the last two seasons. He scored 24 runs and collected 21 RBI last year while throwing out 24 would-be base stealers. He has reached base safely in seven of 11 games played this year and has a.231 average with a three runs scored and a six RBI. Burt Showing He Belongs Although Josh Burt is new to the Dayton roster this season after transferring from Lincoln Trail CC, Coach Vittorio will use him to split the duties at catcher along with Hepner. Burt was behind the plate for the second game of the Feb. 12 doubleheader as Luke Trubee earned a 5-2 complete game victory. Burt also went 1-for-3 with a double in the game. A Left Field Duo Redshirt Junior Roberto Ramos and JC transfer Bryan Chandler will split time in left field this season for the Flyers. Ramos is an excellent fielder whose speed on the bases allowed him to tally two doubles and three runs scored this year. He is hitting.350 this season. Chandler hit.295 with 32 RBI and 35 runs scored last season at Sinclair CC and hit his first home run, a grand slam, as a Flyer in the season opener. DeLuca A Capable Backup Redshirt freshman Michael DeLuca has pitched in as a backup infielder this season. He has played in seven games and his best performance of the season came against UNC Asheville when he was 2-for-3 with a double, and two runs scored. Mercer Comes Through in a Pinch Freshman Jeff Mercer had two RBI pinch-hit singles to help UD take two of three games from #19/20 Notre Dame on Feb. 26 & 27. He gave Dayton a lead in the 10th inning with his first collegiate RBI. Mercer also had the game-winning RBI when he drove a ground ball through a drawn in infield in the series finale. Potent Pitching Attack Last season, the Flyer pitching staff had a 2.11-to strikeout-to-walk ratio. In fact, all eight UD pitchers who threw at least 20 innings had more strikeouts than walks. In 2005, UD has struckout 85 batters while walking just 31 (2.74-to-1.00). See Ya Later The Dayton pitching staff has struck out 85 batters in 14 games this season. Starter Luke Trubee leads UD with 30 Ks followed by Craig Stammen with 24. Stammen, A Stopper For The Flyers Junior right hander Craig Stammen, a Player To Watch according to Collegiate Baseball, led the team with nine saves and had a 4.26 ERA with 61 strikeouts in 67.2 innings pitched over 22 appearances last season. The team captain also threw three complete games. He has a 3.82 ERA with 24 Ks in 30.2 innings pitched this year. Opponents are batting just.222 off him and he has surrendered just seven extra base hits. Stammen won the season opener at Wofford and earned a CG win over Oakland last weekend.

5 Tru bee To Form Junior righty Luke Trubee led Dayton with eight wins last season. A feat made more impressive when you realize that 2004 MLB Draft pick Jerry Blevins had just seven wins last season for the Flyers. Trubee, a team captain, also held a 4.09 ERA with 40 strikeouts and two complete games last year. He fanned three while walking none in a CG win over Wofford on Feb. 12 to earn A-10 Player of the Week honors. He then struck out 13 in an 8-5 win over Youngstown State on Feb. 19. He also had a CG victory over Oakland on March 12. Trubee, A Strikeout King Junior Luke Trubee has struckout at least 10 batters in two of his five starts this season. He fanned 13 in an 8-5 win over Youngstown State on Feb. 19. Trubee then struck out 10 in a CG loss to UNC Asheville on March 6. Drew To The Rescue Senior Drew Chesebro will help UD as both a starter and a reliever this season. He allowed just one run on two hits while striking out a pair in a 3.0 inning relief appearance on Feb. 13. He then came on to throw a scoreless inning of relief vs. YSU on Feb. 19. Eger is Eager To Contribute For UD Senior Mark Eger was a consistent contributor in limited action out of the bullpen last season for Dayton. Last year, he finished with a 1-0 record and a 4.76 ERA while striking out seven batters in 11.1 innings pitched. This year, he has thrown 1.2 innings of relief without allowing a hit or run to score. He also has one save on the season. Eger also made one start this year. Lindsay Looking To Repeat Sophomore Kyle Lindsay is looking to regain the form he had last season that led him to a 4-2 record with a 5.50 ERA out of the bullpen. He was named A-10 Rookie of the Week last year on Apr. 12 after three scoreless relief appearances against Miami (Ohio) and Massachusetts (twice). He pitched the ninth, 10th and 11th innings in UD s 13-9 win over #19/20 Notre Dame and surrendered just two runs on four hits while fanning four Irish batters to earn the win. Successful Southpaws Redshirt senior Kaleb Thompson and freshman Jake Bailosky are the only two lefthanders on the UD pitching staff. Thompson has vaulted himself to become the Sunday starter this year after going 0-3 last season with a ERA and seven strikeouts in six appearances last season. Bailosky was named Conference Player of the Year last season at Keystone High School. Thompson struck out three while walking just two over 4.0 innings pitched on Feb. 13 against Wofford. He then earned his first win of the season vs #19/20 Notre Dame with a 4.0 inning relief appearance as he struck out two Irish batters. Rohren Closed Out The Irish After splitting a doubleheader with #19/20 Notre Dame on Feb. 26, Dayton had an lead heading into the bottom of the ninth inning. After the ND leadoff batter walked, JC transfer Craig Rohren came out of the bullpen to shut down the Irish to earn his first save as a Flyer. Over the past two seasons combined, Rohren has converted 15 straight save opportunities and holds a 0.00 ERA with Kankakee CC and Dayton.
