1 The 2004 Season: A Golden Anniversary The Northwest League of Professional Baseball celebrated its 50th anniversary season in 2004 and its teams marked the milestone with an appropriate tribute: a pair of dramatic pennant races that saw six clubs three in each division contending for the title with three days to play. One of those teams was the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes. After leading Salem-Keizer to a division title in 2003, Joe Strain returned for his second season as the Volcanoes manager and led them out of the gate at a brisk pace. For the second straight year, the club was over.500 after 20 games, and their record after 24 games would be the best in franchise history. After losing to Eugene in extra innings on Opening Night, Salem-Keizer came from behind to win the next two games. On June 19, the Volcanoes spotted the Emeralds a 5-3 lead before rallying to win, 9-5. Second basemen Kevin Frandsen went 4-4 with a pair of doubles while a quartet of relievers blanked the Ems on two hits over 7 innings. The next night, fans got their first look at Craig Whitaker, the 19-year old Texan who had been a first round draft choice in They liked what they saw. In 4 innings, the lanky righthander allowed only two hits and struck out seven as S-K won, While Whitaker was considered a true blue chip prospect, Joe Strain began the season with a roster short on high draft choices. Clay Timpner (4th round), a fleet centerfielder with dazzling defensive skills, and first baseman Will Thompson (7th round) were the only Top 10 picks from the 2004 draft with the club on Opening Night, and just seven of the Giants first 20 selections were in uniform, the smallest number in the Volcanoes eight-year history. Yet Strain and his coaches, Jerry Cram and Gary Davenport, liked their club. The players were comfortable in the clubhouse, competitive on the field and they came to play every day. In Spokane, Salem-Keizer dropped three of five with each loss coming by a single run. (The Volcanoes would lose their first five one-run decisions before going 11-4 in one-run games the rest of the season.) In the series third game, Simon Klink blasted two home runs and a double and drove in five runs and Timpner went 3-4 with three RBI s to lead the Volcanoes to a 10-4 triumph. The win went to Darren Sack who allowed four hits and struck out nine in 5 innings. Doug Mackay earned his first victory the following night with 5 shutout innings. Back at The Crater, Salem-Keizer won four of five against Yakima and finished June with an 8-5 record, one game behind division-leading Everett, the early favorite in the West. Through a scheduling quirk, the Volcanoes wouldn t meet Everett until August 16 and then play 12 of their last 20 games against them. S-K s hitters flourished against Yakima, getting 55 hits and outscoring the Bears Jeff Palumbo was 7-14, Charlie Babineaux was 8-15 with a pair of home runs and Klink had nine RBI s. The team s hottest hitter, however, was Brian Horwitz, a free agent from the University of California. Projected to be a reserve outfielder, Horwitz earned a regular berth after opening the season with an 11-game hitting streak. He would lead the league in batting (.347) and base hits (93) and set a franchise record for doubles with 24. Salem-Keizer opened July in Eugene. Though the Emeralds finished with the league s worst record (26-50), they would win seven of 12 games with the Volcanoes. Led by catcher Colt Morton s four home runs, the Ems won two of three games at Civic Stadium and two out of three at The Crater. Salem-Keizer was One bright spot was the pitching of Garrett Broshuis, a fifth round selection from Missouri. On July 2, in his first start, he blanked the Ems for 5 innings in a 4-1 victory. (He d improve to 3-0 earning a quick promotion to San Jose.) Whitaker s effort on July 5 was another highlight. In a 10-3 win, he pitched 6 innings of one-hit, shutout ball to gain his first victory. However, starts of this duration would be few and far between. Strain and pitching coach Jerry Cram would have to deal with the inconsistency of their starting staff all season. That was a dramatic change from the previous year. Nothing separated the 2003 and 04 Volcanoes more than the innings pitched by the starters. In 2003, a rotation anchored by Jesse Floyd, Pat Misch, Brooks McNiven and Ben Thurmond pitched 385 innings (5.07/game). The starters worked 5 or more innings 48 times, 6 or more innings 34 times and pitched 7 or more innings in 11 games. In 2004, the starters threw 317 innings (4.17/game). They pitched 5 innings or more 32 times, but there were only five games when a starter completed 6 innings and no one pitched 7. While pitch counts were up, so were strikeouts. This was a staff with live arms; they d set a franchise record with 686 strikeouts (9.0/gm.) including 19 at Tri-City on July 31. Fortunately, Salem-Keizer had a deep bullpen, led by hardthrowing righthanders Anthony Moreno and Chase Smith and a quartet of southpaws: Adam Gardner, Geno Espineli, Nathan Pendley and closer Mike Kunes. One of the Volcanoes good young arms was Jesus Reina. In the opener at Yakima, July 7, the 20-year old lefthander fanned 10 in 5 innings of one-hit shutout ball. Yet, S-K trailed 1-0 in the 9th before Frandsen tied the score with a dramatic home run just inside the foul pole. In the 10th, catcher Nick Conte s sacrifice fly gave Salem-Keizer a 2-1 victory. By winning four of five games in the series, the Volcanoes (14-10) moved within one game of first place. The toughest loss of the season was just ahead. On July 13, Salem-Keizer hosted Tri-City in the opener of a five-game series. In the second inning, with runners at first and second and two outs, the Dust Devils Pedro Strop hit a ground ball towards Kevin Frandsen at second base. As Kevin came in to field the ball, he was hit from the side by Tri-City s 200-pound catcher Rick Guarno, the runner moving from first to second. Guarno would be called out for interference, but Frandsen would be lost for the season with a broken collarbone. Things only got worse when S-K squandered a 10-6 lead in the 9th and eventually lost the game in the 11th. When the Devils won the next two games, 7-4 and 17-4, the euphoria that followed the successful trip to Yakima had been forgotten. Redemption came the following day. On July 16, the Volcanoes and Tri-City staged a thriller. Will Thompson s three-run homer gave Salem-Keizer an early 5-2 lead but the Dust Devils knotted the score in the 4th. Horwitz broke the 5-5 tie with an RBI single in the 7th but Kunes who had not allowed a run since June 21 could not hold the lead, yielding the tying run in the 9th. In the 10th, the Devils went in front 6-5 before turning the game over to their dominant closer, Jim Miller (1-1, 0.97, 17 Saves). With one out, Conte singled and Miller issued back-to-back walks before Horwitz doubled home the tying and winning runs. That night, the Volcanoes celebrated Salem-Keizer Volcanoes Media Guide
2 more than an 8-7 victory. They d also regained their self-respect. After winning the finale, 8-3, the Volcanoes were and off to Canada for six games. Despite a record, Vancouver was now a team to watch. During the week, the Canadians added five prospects that Oakland has chosen in the first five rounds of the draft. The makeover made them a contender. The Volcanoes roster was also changing. Pitchers Justin Hedrick, the Giants sixth round pick, and Matt Minor, who had five Saves in the Arizona Rookie League, made their debuts July 20. San Francisco s top draft pick, Eddy Martinez-Esteve, a first team All-American from Florida State, and shortstop Kyle Haines, who was hitting.339 in Arizona, joined the club right after the Vancouver trip. Haines, Palumbo who could play second or short and second baseman Ryan Strain, son of the Volcanoes skipper, would share middle infield duties the rest of the year. There was still concern about the inconsistency of the starting rotation. When Reina faced only ten batters in a 10-3 loss in Vancouver July 18, it marked the seventh consecutive game a starter had failed to last 5 innings. That string would end the next day when Darren Sack worked 6 1/3 innings in a tough 3-1 setback. After losing four of six in Canada, S-K returned home and won three of five against Boise. Momentum would prove elusive for the Volcanoes all season the club s longest winning streak was three games and the team took a step back in Tri- City, dropping four of five games. In S-K s lone victory, on July 31, Whitaker, Moreno and Gardner combined for a club-record 19 strikeouts. Gardner fanned nine to earn the win in relief and Horwitz tied a team record with three doubles. At the All-Star break, Salem-Keizer was 22-23, tied with Vancouver for second in the West, trailing Everett by three. By virtue of winning the division title in 2003, Joe Strain had been selected to manage the West in the Northwest League s historic 50th Anniversary All-Star Game, the first the league had held since adopting a short season format in Each team was represented by six players. The Volcanoes selections were outfielders Clay Timpner and Brian Horwitz, infielders Jeff Palumbo and Simon Klink and pitchers Craig Whitaker and Mike Kunes. The game, played in Spokane Tuesday, August 3, before 6,775 fans, was won by the East, 6-4. The Volcanoes had two new players in their lineup when they hosted Vancouver in the opener of a six-game series August 5. John Bowker, San Francisco s third round draft choice, replaced Martinez-Esteve in left after Eddy was sent to Hagerstown, and Jonathan Sanchez, 5-0 in Arizona, moved into the starting rotation. Salem-Keizer won the first three games, the third when John Acha homered in the 10th to break a scoreless tie. In the last game of the series, Sanchez in his second start pitched 5 innings of two-hit, shutout ball for his first win. After winning four of six from Vancouver, the Volcanoes were They led the Canadians by two, but still trailed Everett by three. Salem-Keizer won three of five games in Boise. Timpner who was in the series had three hits and drove in five runs as the Volcanoes took the opener, After being blanked in the second game, S-K won the third as Chase Smith threw 4 innings of hitless relief and Bowker who was in the series went 4-5 with a double and a home run. After the series, Pendley was called up to San Jose and Todd Jennings, the team s All-Star catcher in 2003, rejoined the club after having shoulder surgery in the spring. Twenty games were left and finally Everett (32-24) and Salem-Keizer (29-27) would meet for the first time. The series would open at The Crater, August 16. The Volcanoes held the Sox to just four hits in the opener, but three were home runs off Sack and Everett won 6-4. On the 17th, S-K trailed 1-0 in the bottom of the 9th but tied the score on Babineaux s dramatic two-out single to left. In the 12th, Haines led off with a double and scored on Palumbo s one-out single to give Salem-Keizer a 2-1 victory. In the third game, the Volcanoes made five errors and stranded a dozen. Everett won 5-2. On August 20, the series shifted to Everett. The game was scoreless through five innings as Reina matched offerings with the league s best pitcher, Shawn Nottingham. In the 6th, the Sox broke through with three runs and won 6-1. Nottingham allowed only four hits and struck out 12 in 8 innings. On Saturday, August 21, Everett scored four times in the 8th inning to beat the Volcanoes 6-3 and, on Sunday, pushed across a run in the 10th to win 2-1. In the season s most important series, the AquaSox had won five of six games. Salem-Keizer was seven games out with 14 to play. After winning three of five against Spokane, the Volcanoes were and 4 ½ games out of first. There was also a new leader in the West. While Everett dropped four of five games to Boise, Vancouver won four of five in Yakima. After winning 15 of 18 games, the Canadians were now a half game in front of the AquaSox. With nine games left, the Volcanoes traveled down I-5 to meet a Eugene team that had lost 17 of its last 20 games. Bowker and Jennings hit three-run homers as S-K won the opener 10-4, but the Ems a nemesis for the Volcanoes all season took the next two, 5-2 and 4-0. Salem-Keizer was 5 ½ games back with six to play, now on the brink of elimination. The Volcanoes (34-36) would finish the season with six games against Everett (38-32) while Vancouver (39-30) had seven games left with Eugene. In Everett, S-K won three straight: 9-7, 13-3 and 10-2, getting 41 hits in their best offensive series of the summer. Horwitz, the club s lone representative on the NWL All-Star team, went 7-14 to virtually lock up the league batting title. John Odom, the team s most improved pitcher, won the opener with 4 1/3 innings of one-hit relief. Sanchez fanned 11 in 5 innings to win the second game and Whitaker chalked up his 4th victory in the third. In Vancouver, Eugene won two of three from the Canadians; the Volcanoes were still alive. Salem-Keizer s faint pennant hopes ended September 3, when the Volcanoes lost to Everett and Vancouver split a doubleheader in Eugene. On September 4, Boise clinched the title in the East; and, on the final day of the season, the Canadians won the flag in the West. After losing their last three games, the Volcanoes finished 37-39, five games back. Boise won the Championship Series from Vancouver in three consecutive games and the Northwest League s Golden Anniversary season had come to a close. There was one more milestone to celebrate. On September 3, Salem-Keizer welcomed Don Ferschweiler as the one millionth fan to attend a game at Volcanoes Stadium. In doing so, Salem-Keizer became the second franchise in Northwest League history to reach 1,000,000 fans in its first eight seasons. (The Portland Rockies were the first.) How quickly the years had gone...and how satisfying they had been. As fans left the ballpark, they were already looking forward to the following June and another season. Somehow, it seemed right around the corner Salem-Keizer Volcanoes Media Guide 81
