Salem-Keizer currently holds a two-game lead over Eugene in the South Division second-half standings. Andrew Suarez will make his fourth start for the Volcanoes in pursuit of his first win of the season. The Emeralds will counter with left-hander Jose Paulino. REWIND: SALEM-KEIZER ESCAPES WITH VICTORY The Volcanoes edged out the Eugene Emeralds to escape with a 3-2 victory Thursday night at PK Park. Eugene made things interesting in the ninth, placing runners at the corners with only one out, but the Volcanoes turned a thrilling double play to end the contest with the lead intact. Jose Vizcaino Jr. deflected a soft line drive off the bat of Blake Headley before Junior Amion snagged the ball, stepped on second and fired to first for the final out. DUGGAR THRIVES ATOP LINEUP Steven Duggar has turned his season around since moving into the leadoff role on July 20, posting a.342 batting average and a.390 on-base percentage with 16 runs scored and four stolen bases. Duggar had struggled before the switch, hitting.246 in his first 17 games with Salem-Keizer. Duggar has hit just.240 this season in 50 at bats elsewhere in the lineup. VOLCANOES TURN ON THE SPEED After stealing just 18 bases through its first 32 games, Salem-Keizer has stolen 15 bases in its last 14 games. The Volcanoes have attempted a stolen base in 11 of their last 14 games and are 15-for-21 over that span. Though Ronnie Jebavy leads Salem-Keizer with 15 stolen bases, the trend has been a team effort. Six different players (Jebavy, Steven Duggar, Shilo McCall, C.J. Hinojosa, Junior Amion and Jose Vizcaino Jr.) have stolen a base in the last 14 games. Salem-Keizer still ranks last in in the NWL in stolen bases on the season with 33. LIVING ON THE EDGE Eight of Salem-Keizer s last 12 games have been decided by a single run. The Volcanoes played in only nine one-run contests through their first 34 games before this current stretch. The Volcanoes are 12-5 in one-run games this season - the best mark in the NWL. PANIK AT THE PK Games between the Volcanoes and Emeralds at PK Park have not been for the faint of heart, as nine of the last 10 games have been decided by a single run. The Volcanoes kept the trend going last night, escaping with a 3-2 victory despite a late Eugene rally. Salem-Keizer has come out on top in five of the nine contests. LAVA BURSTS: NOTES IN BRIEF Let s Turn Two: The Volcanoes turned three double plays last night for just the second time this season. It was the first time since June 29 that they turned three double plays in a game. Salem-Keizer is sixth in the Northwest League with 33 double plays this season. Amion Trending Up: Junior Amion recorded his first three-hit game of the season in last night s 3-2 win. Although Amion only hit.214 in the month of July, he is 11-for-24 (.458) in his last seven games with two RBIs and seven runs scored. Holding On: After tossing two scoreless innings last night, Cory Taylor now leads the NWL in holds with six. Run Ronnie, Run!: Ronnie Jebavy is fourth in the NWL in runs scored this season with 30. He also leads the team by a wide margin with 15 stolen bases (next closest: Duggar, 4). Jebavy also leads the team and is fifth in the NWL with five home runs, showing his versatility.
