1 The 2014 Season: A Roller-Coaster Summer After winning the Northwest League South division both halves of the season and finishing with the best overall record in 2013, the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes sought to repeat the trick in its 2014 campaign. Although the Craters showed promise throughout the year, an up-and-down summer eventually landed Gary Davenport s club at a pedestrian mark. While there was no champagne popping during what turned out to be Davenport s final run with the Volcanoes, the twists and turns over the course of the season were as entertaining as one will find in the Northwestern echelons of Minor League Baseball. The tone of the season was set during the first week of play. After dropping the first three games to the threetime defending champion Vancouver Canadians, the Volcanoes salvaged the series with back-to-back tight wins, followed by a third successive victory on the road to rival Hillsboro. The Hops, eventual 2014 NWL champions, coupled a pair of wins themselves to take the series, putting Salem-Keizer in a rough position to begin the year. An injection was needed to the squad, and along came 2013 Giants first-round pick (25th overall) Christian Arroyo. The 18-year-old shortstop debuted the 2014 campaign with the Augusta Greenjackets (Low-A), but a hand injury sidelined his season briefly until the start of June. This opened an opportunity to join the Volcanoes to start the Northwest League season, and the Tampa, Florida, native flourished in a Volcanoes uniform. Arroyo sizzled in tune with the summer months, posting a.333/.378/.469 line with a team-high 44 RBI by season s end. The team followed suit, albeit only for a while, winning five of seven games in late June, before dropping its final three contests of the month. Entering July needing to string some wins together for a first-half division push, the Volcanoes could not find a consistent winning recipe. A day after a near-record 5,613 fans witnessed Salem-Keizer s 5-1 Patriotic Tribute victory over Hillsboro on July 4th, the club went an incredible 11 games trading wins and losses, the longest such stretch without consecutive wins or losses in team history. By the time July 17th produced an end to this seesaw run with successive victories at the home of the Eugene Emeralds, an even record couldn t compete for a first-half South Division crown. Entering the halfway point of the season with a record, Salem- Keizer could rue inconsistency for its shortcomings. Inconsistency was short-lived in the Volcanoes 2014 second half, as the team finally found its groove, largely stemming from the starting rotation. Finishing with three of the top five players in NWL innings pitched, an arsenal led by Jason Forjet gave Salem-Keizer s season promise. Concluding his season 7-1 with a 3.10 ERA, 1.13 WHIP, 5.44 K/BB, and an astounding 87 strikeouts in as many innings pitched, the stround pick out of Florida Gulf Coast constantly gave his squad opportunities to win ball games. Jose Reyes, a 2014 Northwest League All-Star, was another horse Davenport could rely on all season, hurling 80-plus innings as well with a 3.89 ERA and a cool 1.13 WHIP. Nick Gonzalez (2 HR allowed in 71 IP), Ethan Miller (5-3), and Drew Leenhouts (8.83 K/9) rounded out the durable starting rotation. While Salem-Keizer s arms gave the club a chance on a daily basis, Arroyo s teammates played their parts as well. The San Francisco Giants selected Skyler Ewing out of Rice University in the 6th round of the 2015 draft, and he found an immediate home with the Volcanoes. The big slugger mashed eight home runs throughout the campaign, collecting 31 RBI and posting an impressive.889 OPS. Ewing hammered in four RBI during his first game with the team, and kept it going all year, especially in an August series against Boise where he clubbed two long bombs in the three-game set. Ewing also notched a NWL Player of the Week award (July 20-27) when he hit.375, including two triples. One of the surprise packages in Davenport s everyday lineup was the versatile infielder Travious T Relaford. Drafted in the 41st round in 2011, the Hinds Community College product excelled in a Volcano uniform. While making only seven errors in 70 games across three positions in the infield, Relaford got on base at a.380 clip to help bolster Salem-Keizer s offense. With the first half behind them, the Volcanoes surged out of the gate into the later summer months. Beginning with a five-game set at home against Spokane, the Craters reeled off four straight victories, and eventually found themselves with an 8-5 second-half record heading into the All-Star break Salem-Keizer Volcanoes Media Guide 15

2 While the midsummer battle between the North and South Division stars was a less-than-entertaining 0-0 stalemate, the Volcanoes were well represented. Along with Arroyo, Reyes, and Relaford, third baseman WIll Callaway (.293 avg., 23 RBI), and relief pitchers EJ Encinosa (2.39 ERA, 1.14 WHIP) and Eury Sanchez (14 saves, K/9) were granted All-Star bids. The Volcanoes continued their winning ways into August with another impressive four-game winning streak, during which Salem-Keizer produced its seasonhigh largest margin of victory in a 16-3 demolishing of the Boise Hawks. After a 2-1 victory over the Eugene Emeralds on August 13th, the Volcanoes had reached, and unfortunately peaked to, a 14-6 second-half record, and a overall mark on the year. Four consecutive defeats succeeded this high point, and although the Volcanoes recovered slightly with a threegame winning streak, Salem-Keizer managed to record victories in just three of its final 11 contests, settling for a second-half, which turned out to be six games worse than the South Division champion Hops. Overall, the Volcanoes record reflected their statistical performances in 2014, finishing fourth out of eight in both team batting average (.258) and team ERA (4.24). A season that offered much promise, including at one point having both the first and secondround picks from the Giants 2013 and 2014 drafts on the squad at the same time, fizzled out in the dying days of summer Salem-Keizer Volcanoes Media Guide
