1 January, A Message From Your League President Dear members of Salem Youth Baseball, Thank you for your continued support of our program! We had another very successful year at the fields with over 900 children participating in the program again this past year. We were able to add much needed space to the shed at Michele Park and complete a number of smaller projects to enhance the beauty of Michele Park and the school fields. More importantly, we were able to convert the Michele 2 stone dust field into a grass infield baseball field. This is a project that has been in the planning stages for a number of years, and we were finally able to get it started after Fall Ball. The new infield is in, the backstop was moved, the cement pads were poured for the dugouts and the fencing is well under way. The field was officially dedicated as Veterans Field on November 10 th in honor of all Veterans and especially in honor of two Salem Youth Baseball alumni who were killed in service for our country in 2006: U.S. Army Corporal Nicholas Arvanitis and U.S. Marine Corps Lance Corporal Robert Moscillo. A special plaque was installed at the field in their honor. Both of these men s families were able to attend the dedication and each recounted stories of their days playing baseball on these fields. I hope that each of you will have the time to stop by the new field this year and remember their sacrifice. I would like to thank a number of individuals that donated hundreds of hours of work helping to rebuild the field: Larry Phillips, Bryan Sylvester, Bob Larsen, Stan Dogil, Rich Breen, Mike Loomis and Alex Stewart, and a special thank you to Rick Russell and his staff at the DPW for all of their help in making the field a very special place for all of our children to enjoy for years to come. All of these improvements enhance the experience that each of our children share, but they are not easy and certainly not cheap to complete. We need your help! Any amount of time that you can volunteer at the fields would be greatly appreciated! You can do this by volunteering during field clean-up days, joining the Board, helping with the projects that come up each year, emptying trash cans when you see them filling up, lining and grooming the fields before a game and depositing trash in a receptacle at the fields. If everyone pitches in, these fields will continue to be the best in the State. Once again, I would like to thank each of you for your support, and ask once again for your continued support in The current Board of Directors are listed on page two. If you should have any questions, need any help, or would like to volunteer, please feel free to contact any of us, and we will do our best to help in any way we can. 3 Around the Horn 3 Michele Park Parking Managing & Coaching Even with the expanded parking at Michele Park, there will be times when all spaces will be taken and you will need a space to park. We would like to remind you that cars parked in the fire lanes or on the grass may be ticketed and towed by our local police. If needed, there is additional parking available next door at Mary Queen of Peace church, with the exception of games played during Mass. When parking in the Mary Queen of Peace lot, the church has asked that we please use the back rows and leave the front ten rows for their members. Help Wanted: Fundraising Director The league s Board of Directors is still looking to fill the position of Fundraising Director. This is an extremely important position, as fundraising allows the league to keep membership fees low, and helps to finance improvement projects such as the new shed and the Veterans Field construction. The Fundraising Director is primarily responsible for organizing fundraising events, such as Tag Day and Rockingham Park poker nights, and working with our league sponsors. Ideally, the league would like to organize a fundraising committee to ease the burden of the director. If you are a dedicated individual with good organization skills who is willing to donate your time to this worthy cause, please contact league president Steve Stewart. Updating Your Contact Information Managing and coaching can be an extremely rewarding experience, and there is nothing you can do that will affect your child s experience and the experiences of the other children on his or her team more than coaching. The best coaches are remembered long after the season ends, and are often a great influence in a child s life. What is the difference between managing and coaching? Coaches simply instruct the players on the field during games and practices. Managers also instruct, but also determine playing time, fill out the lineup cards and assign positions on the field. Managers are also responsible for attending the draft (Double-A level and above) and attending manager meetings. If you are interested in managing or coaching a Little League or Babe Ruth team, you will need to complete a Little League Volunteer Application and a C.H.R.I. background check form prior to close of registration on January 26th. These forms will be available at each registration and on the Salem Youth Baseball web site under the Documents section. However, note that we cannot accept the completed forms electronically. Your notarized signature is required. Therefore, these forms must be submitted at one of our walk-in registrations in January at the Woodbury school, or by mailing an application and a notarized CHRI form to Salem Youth Baseball at P.O. Box As in 2007, managers and coaches will be selected by the Board of Directors (BoD) from a pool of applicants that have been successfully processed through the C.H.R.I. check system. This means that if you do not submit a C.H.R.I. application on a timely basis, you will not be eligible to manage or coach. The Salem Youth Baseball BoD takes the safety of our children very seriously, and this background check is just the first step in the process. 4 4 Around the Horn Fundraising & Sponsorship Thanks in large part to donations from individuals and businesses like yours, Salem Youth Baseball (SYBB) had another extremely successful year in The Babe Ruth, Little League Baseball and Fall Ball programs experienced continued growth during 2007 with over 900 boys and girls within Salem and Windham participating during the year. In addition to providing a winter work out program, and a spring, summer and fall baseball season, SYBB was able to expand the shed at Michele Park and reconstruct the old stone dust field at Michele Park, including the addition of a new score board, pavement, backstop, grass sod and dugouts. Eventually, we hope to perform field upgrades at each of the school fields. Once again, we are asking for your and/or your business s help supporting Salem Youth Baseball through a Team Sponsorship, League Sponsorship or a Sign Sponsorship during the 2008 season. The cost of a Team Sponsorship is $250, which includes a commemorative plaque including your Team s picture.the team will wear hats with your or your business s name embroidered on them, and five of those team hats are for you to keep. A listing of the sponsors names will appear in Salem Youth Baseball publications, web site, advertisements and standings. The cost of a League Sponsorship is $500, which includes all of the above, plus an additional five hats, and more prominent location of league sponsors names in all publications. The cost of a Sign Sponsorship is $600 per year. It includes a 4 x 4 large color sign that will hang from the Little League fence at Michele Park. Not only is this sign a great marketing opportunity, but it has the added benefit of helping a great program! This sign will be viewed by thousands of people from the Salem area throughout the spring, summer and fall. You will also receive the benefits of a league sponsorship. We are proud of the program we have developed here in Salem and we hope that you will support our kids in this upcoming season. Youth Umpires Volunteers & Work Force We are looking for youth umpires for the upcoming 2008 season. The payment for each game is $15 per assignment. Now that volunteer fees have been absorbed into the base cost, we need your help more than ever. Inevitably, most of the work throughout the year falls on the shoulders of the Board of Directors. It takes an enormous amount of time and effort to run a league of 900+ boys and girls, and the experience they receive is only equal to the amount of time and effort we as parents put into it. By donating only a few hours of your time during the season, you will help to reduce the cost of participation and help us to make improvements to the league. So, please, pitch in and help whenever you can!
