1 INDIANAPOLIS INDIANS GAME NOTES GAME #25-26 / Home Game #16-17 Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees (20-5) at Indianapolis Indians (11-13) Thursday, May 7, First Pitch of 10:00 a.m. EDT Victory Field -- Indianapolis, Ind. Game 1: Yankees LHP Casey Fossum (0-0, 2.45 w/scranton) vs. Indians RHP Ty Taubenheim (0-2, 4.50) Game 2: Yankees RHP Steven Jackson (0-0, 2.45) vs. Indians LHP Tom Gorzelanny (1-1, 4.34) STARTING SUCCESS AGAINST SCRANTON: In 2008, Indians probable starter for game one, Ty Taubenheim, faced Scranton/Wilkes-Barre twice and turned in a 1-1 record with a 3.21 ERA... The Tribe hurler also went seven innings in both starts against the Yankees, while allowing just seven total hits and striking out nine... Taubenheim s 14 innings, nine strikeouts, and 0.93 WHIP were all team bests against Scranton last season. TOP OF THE TOP: Scranton 2B Kevin Russo and DH John Rodriguez continued their hot hitting at the top of the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre lineup on Tuesday evening... The duo, who again batted first and second, combined to go 3-for-8 and record the only RBI and only multi-hit game for the Yankees... On Monday night, Russo and Rodriguez combined to 6-for-9 with two runs scored and six of the team s seven RBI... In the five games that Russo and Rodriguez have batted one and two for the International League s best offense this season, the team has now gone 4-1, while plating 33 runs on 62 hits... In those games the duo of Russo and Rodriguez has combined to bat.432 (19-for-44) with nine runs and nine RBI. DEFENSIVE BOUNCE BACK: After committing five errors in the May 2 doubleheader against Rochester, the Indian s defense has turned things around with three straight errorless games as well as a plethora of top-level defensive plays across the field... OF Jeff Salazar made several top-notch defensive plays during the Tribe s recent errorless streak. Defense has played a large role in the Tribe s success this season as they are 7-4 when they do not commit an error and 1-7 when they commit two or more miscues. CLOSE CONTESTS: Entering Wednesday s contest against the Yankees, 14 of the Indians 24 contests have been decided by two runs or less... Last season the Tribe was involved in the most one-run games in all of Minor League baseball as they posted a record in one-run affairs with their 31 losses tied for the most in all of the Minor Leagues, and their 26 wins tieing them for the most in the International League. OFFENSIVE STRUGGLES: Over the past 10 contests the Indians offense is batting just.195 with 60 hits, 36 runs scored, eight home runs and 32 RBI... The Tribe s.195 batting average is 14 points lower than any other International League team during that stretch, while their hits total is the second fewest and their runs total the third fewest... The Indians have also struggled on an individual basis over the past 10 games as only INF Shelby Ford is batting over.300 and only OF Steve Pearce has double digit hits. STEALING THE SHOW: On Tuesday evening against the Yankees, C Erik Kratz stole his second base of the season, during the eventual game-winning rally for the Tribe in the seventh inning... The swipe for Kratz gave Indianapolis a total of 33 on the season, placing them just one steal behind the International League leading Toledo Mud Hens...The Tribe now has 10 steals in the first two games of the series against Scranton after they stole a Victory Field record nine bases on Monday evening... The nine steals were the most for an International League club since Durham stole 10 bags on August 29, OF Jeff Salazar stole three bases for the first time in his career on Monday night and is now ranked third in the IL with eight swipes on the season, while OF Andrew McCutchen and OF Garrett Jones rank second on the team with five steals each... The Indians have paced the IL in thefts in each of the past four seasons (198 in 08, 163 in 07, 180 in 06 and 163 in 05). SHUTTING DOWN SCRANTON: On Tuesday night, Indian s hurlers Jason Davis, Sean Smith, Denny Bautista, and Chris Bootcheck combined to hold the International League s top ranked offense to just one run on eight hits... Tribe pitchers also ended the IL s longest hitting streak thus far this season, when they held Yankees OF Todd Linden to an 0-for-2 effort, to halt his League best 19-game streak... Indianapolis also held down IL Home Run, RBI, and runs scored leader Shelley Duncan, who went 0-for-4 on the evening and left four men on base... Duncan, the reigning IL player of the week is just 1-for-9 thus far in the series and has left seven men on base as well. QUOTE OF THE DAY -- 1B STEVE PEARCE With our offense struggling the way it is our defense can keep us in these games and Salazar had a heck of a night and it was a great game for him.
