Three Diamond Dawgs hit.500 or better during the Florida series (Elijah MacNamee.538, Tanner Allen.538, Jake Mangum.500) and seven recorded an RBI. During the sweep of the Gators, State became the first team to complete a three-game sweep of the No. 1 team since April 1-3, 2016, while having outscored Florida, MSU also improved to 9-1 on the year against top-five teams, including two sweeps of top-three teams. In 21 of State s 31 wins thus far, opponents have been held to four runs or less. In three of the remaining six, opponents scored just five runs. The Diamond Dawgs have 17 comeback wins on the year (31 wins total), seven of which came in the month of March with the other 10 having come in April (three against Ole Miss and two against Arkansas). State has come on strong after a start and 2-7 in SEC play on March 31. Since April 1, MSU is 17-9 overall and 13-8 in conference play. The Diamond Dawgs have also improved their RPI by 66 spots from No. 92 to No. 26 since April 1. Tanner Allen was named to the Freshman All-SEC Team at first base after hitting.301 on the year with 14 doubles, a league-leading five triples, three home runs and 35 RBIs. Allen was also named SEC Freshman of the Week after posting a slugging percentage and a.571 on-base percentage vs. Florida With a league-leading 82 hits in 2018, Jake Mangum is now a three-time All-SEC outfielder ( ), a two-time First Team All-SEC outfielder (2016, 2018) and a two-time SEC All-Defensive Team outfielder (2017, 2018). MSU is when holding opponents to five or less runs, 12-2 when holding others to two or less runs and 7-14 when allowing six or more runs. State is also 22-1 when scoring six or more runs, 18-5 when scoring first and 14-4 when having scored in the first inning. Over the last 10 games, the bats have been hot as six different Bulldogs are averaging.300 or better at the plate during that stretch (Jordan Westburg.462, Elijah MacNamee.455, Hunter Stovall.400, Tanner Allen.395, Jake Mangum.341, Rowdey Jordan.324). MacNamee is riding a career-best and team-best 20-game reached base streak, and in that span has batted.365 (27-for-74) with 19 runs scored, 10 doubles, three home runs and 21 RBIs. While Mangum leads MSU in multi-hit games (24), Tanner Allen (21) and Hunter Stovall (20) are the next closest to their junior center fielder. The MSU defense also leads the SEC in runners caught stealing with 26 and is fifth in the league in runners picked off with seven. In just 37 appearances this year, Marshall Gilbert is second in the conference with 16 runners caught stealing. Dustin Skelton ranks 10th with seven. HailStateSnap HailStateBB

6 SERIES HISTORY VS. THE TIGERS MSU holds a advantage over LSU in the all-time series between the two programs, with the Bulldogs leading the series 12-8 in games played at neutral sites. The two sides most recently met during the regular season in Baton Rouge with the Tigers winning two of three (March 29-31). ROLL EM UP As a team, State leads the league and ranks 13th in the nation in fielding double plays (53). Stovall ranks second in the SEC in fielding double plays (44) and Luke Alexander ranks fourth in the conference (36). TEAM & PLAYER NOTES Named to the Freshman All-SEC Team, Tanner Allen is the only Diamond Dawg freshman to have started all 55 games this season, with 30 of those starts having come at first base. Allen is hitting.301 on the year with 14 doubles, a league-leading five triples, three home runs and 35 RBIs. Allen is the ninth Bulldog to receive All-SEC Freshman recognition and the first since Jake Mangum in Allen is also the first Freshman All-SEC infielder for State since Connor Powers in ROAD DAWGS The scheduled 12-game road trip that opened the season for State is the longest stretch of games away from Starkville since 1982 when MSU played 14 straight games away from home. NO DOUBLE TROUBLE With 121 doubles on the year, State leads the SEC and ranks eighth in the country in the category. 13 different Diamond Dawgs have tallied a double on the year, with Jake Mangum s 20 being a team best. Mangum ranks second in the league and 22nd nationally. A SCRAPPY BUNCH The Diamond Dawgs have 17 comeback wins on the year (31 wins total), seven of which came in the month of March with the other 10 having come in April (three against Ole Miss and two against Arkansas). In 2017, 25 of State s 40 wins were come-from-behind victories. 25 of MSU s 40 wins in 2017 came in comeback fashion, 13 of which cam against SEC opponents. Three comeback wins came in the NCAA Hattiesburg Regional, which helped State become the 22nd team in the current 64-team NCAA Tournament format to win a regional after losing the opening game. NO CAKE WALK Holding a RPI of 92 on April 1, State has climbed 66 spots to No. 26 in just over seven weeks by posting an 10-6 mark in the month of April and a 7-3 record in May with 12 of those wins having come against ranked teams, nine against teams ranked in the top five and eight against top-three teams. The three-game sweep of Florida helped MSU rise nine spots from No. 35 on May 14 to No. 26 on May 19. Considering its cumulative opposition for the 2018 season, the Diamond Dawgs have played the seventh-toughest schedule in all of Division I baseball. HENDU AT THE HELM MSU is second in the SEC in batters struck out looking (146), while Konnor Pilkington leads the league in strikeouts looking (35). State s staff also ranks fourth in the league in batters struck out (471). MSU is third in the SEC in batters struck out looking (152), while Konnor Pilkington leads the league in strikeouts looking (37). State s staff also ranks sixth in the league in batters struck out (504). The MSU pitching staff has combined for 10+ strikeouts in 21 games this season. State s staff has also collected 26 or more punch outs in nine of its last 12 weekend series, with six of those having been 29+ strikeout weekends. The Bulldogs most recently struck out Florida 33 times. 39 strikeouts over the three-game stretch that was the Shriner s College Classic (March 2-4) at Minute Maid Park made for the most in a three-game weekend series by a Diamond Dawg pitching staff since 45 on March 2-3, 2002 against Jacksonville State (doubleheader on March 2). Gary Henderson moved from Assistant Coach to Interim Head Coach on Feb. 20, 2018 following the resignation of Andy Cannizaro. Henderson is a 29-year coaching veteran who has served as the MSU pitching coach since June DIAMOND DAWG DEBUTS A total of 12 newcomers have made their MSU thus far in 2018 (Tanner Allen, Jordan Anderson, JP France, Justin Foscue, Marshall Gilbert, Josh Hatcher, Rowdey Jordan, Jared Liebelt, Cole Marsh, Zach Neff, Alex Pener and Jordan Westburg), eight of those have also recorded a start this season. YOUNG PUPS The Maroon & White have a new look in 2018 with 14 newcomers (8 freshmen, 2 sophomores, 2 juniors and 2 graduate transfers). The 12-game span for the 2018 Diamond Dawgs was the longest stretch to open the season without a home game in program history (previousy 10 in 1967). The road trip was due to the $55 million construction project that will result in the new Dudy Noble Field. While the project won t be fully completed until February 2019, it is partially completed for 23 home games, with the possiblity to host during the postseason, in WE VE DONE IT BEFORE The Diamond Dawgs got off to an 0-3 start to the season for the first time since 1996, a year that saw State go on to finish (17-13 SEC) and make one of its 36 all-time NCAA Tournament appearances. MAYOR OF STARKVILLE Jake Mangum s 82 hits are the most in the conference and rank 23rd in the country. His 20 doubles are second-most in the SEC and 22nd in the nation. Mangum recorded the 250th hit of his Mississippi State career on Thursday, May 17, 2018 at Dudy Noble Field against No. 1 Florida. Through the first 34 games of the 2017 season, 2016 SEC Freshman of the Year Jake Mangum was hitting at a.374 clip. After breaking his hand against Kentucky on April 9, went on to finish the season 11th in the SEC in batting (.324) with a.273 batting average over the final 33 games of the season. WHO S BACK? With SEC Triple Crown Winner Brent Rooker having been selected in the first round of the 2017 MLB Draft, State will have to look elsewhere for offensive production in 2018 and the possibilities are there as MSU returns 50% of its hits, 36% of its extra-base hits and 39% of its RBIs from After preseason injuries have ruled Graham Ashcraft and Preseason All-American Spencer Price out for the entirety of the 2018 season, on the mound MSU is returning 55% of its wins, 59% of its innings pitched and 38% of its saves. SUMMER SUCCESS A total of 14 Diamond Dawgs (10 returning and 4 newcomers) spent their offseason playing summer ball, four of which were named All Stars in their respective leagues (Elijah MacNamee, Jake Mangum, Hunter Vansau, Dustin Skelton). A RUBY ANNIVERSARY FOR A GOLDEN VOICE Long-time MSU radio broadcaster Jim Ellis is in his 40th season as the play-byplay announcer for Mississippi State baseball, with his first season having been Ellis is tied for the second longest-tenured broadcaster in the sport, trailing only Dave Nitz at LA Tech (44 seasons). Ellis 40 years are tied by Ole Miss David Kellum and Southern Miss John Cox. PUTTING THE JUMBO IN JUMBOTRON Dudy Noble Field became home to the largest video board in college baseball after it was installled in the fall of The project was the first step in the $55 million Dudy Noble Field renovation that began after the conclusion of the 2017 home schedule. Measuring 43.2 feet tall and 60 feet wide, the board spans a total of 2,592 square feet, which is 260 percent larger than the previous board. The upgrade gave the Diamond Dawgs a larger board than that of three MLB clubs (Baltimore, Colorado and Tampa Bay).
