CU swept the Lions this season in Lebanon, 16-5, 4-1 and 5-1, on April The Bulldogs are 26-5 all-time in the TranSouth Championships with fi ve titles in seven years. CU has reached the title game in six of the seven tournaments. Bulldogs win TSAC regular season Cumberland secured its second straight Tran- South Conference regular season crown with a weekend sweep at Mid-Continent and enters the TranSouth Championships as the top seed in Paducah, Ky. The Bulldogs, 46-8 overall and 17-2 in the league, are ranked second nationally for the fourth consecutive week in the NAIA Baseball Coaches Top 25 Poll. Cumberland has won 17 consecutive games overall, the longest winning streak for the club since CU won the national championship in 2004, ending that season with 19 consecutive victories. Cumberland won last year s TranSouth regular season championship with a 15-5 record and also won the regular season title in the TranSouth in TranSouth Champions since Lee Univ (.667) 2004 Lee Univ Trevecca Nazarene (.733) 2006 Cumberland Univ (.833) 2007 Trevecca Nazarene (.778) 2008 Trevecca Nazarene (.850) 2009 Cumberland Univ (.750) 2010 Cumberland Univ (.895) Bulldogs second for fourth straight week Cumberland received 661 points and was ranked second for the fourth straight week in the fi nal regular season NAIA Baseball Coaches Top 25 Poll released Tuesday by the national offi ce. Cumberland has won 17 straight contests overall and has now been ranked in the Top 5 nationally for all six regular season polls. The Bulldogs were rated 19th in the NAIA Preseason Baseball Coaches Top 25 Poll in November and then fourth in the fi rst regular season poll on March 30. CU rose one spot the following week and has been second for the last four weeks. The No. 2 ranking is the highest for the Bulldogs since earning the second spot in the preseason poll in CU already has nine victories this season over ranked opponents three versus Oklahoma City Univ., two against Embry-Riddle and Bethel Univ., and one versus Campbellsville Univ. and Lee Univ. CU won 2-of-3 over Union Univ. earlier this season before Union moved into the Top 25. Greener posting astonishing numbers Senior Matt Greener has accomplished something few players have done in collegiate baseball history hit.500 for an entire regular season. His four-hit game Saturday at Mid-Continent pushed his batting average back to the.500 mark for the year, as he has 97 hits in 53 contests with 21 doubles, 25 home runs, 83 RBIs and 58 runs scored. He leads the nation in seven offensive categories, including hits, home runs, total bases, RBIs and slugging percentage, and ranks second in three others, including batting average. He has continued to hit with great consistency over the last two-plus weeks despite a high right ankle sprain, which has limited his ability to drive the ball in the gaps for doubles. He does not have a two-bagger over the last seven contests, but has belted six home runs during that stretch, including a three-homer day in Saturday s regular season fi nale at Mid-Continent. The Jupiter, Fla., native has 32 multi-hit games this season and has recorded a hit in 51 of the 53 games in which he has played. He also had a 30-game hitting streak earlier this season from March 7-April 16 and has been named the TranSouth Player of the Week four times. Want even more incredible numbers? Greener is batting.559 (38-for-68) in TranSouth action with 10 doubles, 10 home runs, 31 RBIs and 25 runs scored in 19 contests. One more thing he has 40 two-out RBIs this season, 23 percent of the team s total of 178, while batting.478 (33-for-69) with runners in scoring position and.516 (33-for-64) with two outs.

Cumberland led 5-3 after MCU scored twice in the fourth and once in the fi fth and had runners on fi rst and third with no one out in the sixth. Appleton dove for and caught a line drove at third base, lunged and touched the bag and then threw across the diamond to complete a rally-killing triple play. The Pitt Meadows, British Columbia, native has allowed three runs or less in nine of his 12 starts this season, tossing three shutouts and seven complete games while posting a teambest 2.31 ERA with 83 strikeouts in 81.2 innings of work. He ranks second nationally in victories, 14th in innings pitched per game (6.806), 18th in ERA and 19th in strikeouts. Opponents are batting just.221 against Schaefer and he has a 6-0 mark with a 3.19 ERA in seven TranSouth Conference starts this season. Appleton racks up the numbers Junior Greg Appleton has put together a seasonbest 13-game hitting streak heading into this week s TranSouth Championships, batting.447 (21-for-47) with four doubles, six home runs, 16 RBIs and 25 runs scored during the stretch. The Port Coquitlam, British Columbia, native has seven multi-hit outings during the stretch, including fi ve of the last seven games, and has scored multiple runs nine times in the 13 games. Appleton has played a good deal of third base over the last eight games as well, committing just one error in 28 chances, as Matt Greener has struggled with a high ankle sprain. Appleton has also excelled since being inserted into the leadoff spot on April 3 against Bethel Univ. In 20 contests Appleton is batting.385 (30-for-78) with eight doubles, seven homers, 23 RBIs and 34 runs scored and has an on-base percentage of.443. The Bulldogs are 18-2 during the 20 games and have won 17 consecutive games heading into Monday s contest against Freed-Hardeman. For the season he is batting.367 with 13 doubles, 15 home runs, 47 RBIs and 56 runs scored. Appleton has done some of his best work in TranSouth action, batting.444 (second best on the club) with nine doubles, fi ve homers, 20 RBIs and 28 runs scored in 19 contests.

He did not walk a batter and gave up two singles and a double in the outing. The Waco, Texas, native rebounded from his worst outing of the season while allowing eight runs on 11 hits against Lyon College. The righthander has given up three runs or fewer in nine of his 11 starts this season with one shutout and eight complete games. Wilkerson has also gutted out a couple of tight victories for the Bulldogs over the last month, working long and hard (more than 130 pitches) in a 7-3 triumph at Trevecca Nazarene and then giving up just one run on four hits against Freed- Hardeman. For the year Wilkerson is now 10-1 with a 2.71 ERA and 77 strikeouts in 66.1 innings of work. He is also 7-0 with a 3.23 ERA in seven TranSouth Conference games. Fanshawe adds longball to ironman resumé Junior David Fanshawe has done an outstanding job behind the plate this season for the Bulldogs, starting 48 of the team s 54 contests behind the dish and helping the staff post a 3.90 team ERA, 17th best in the nation. He has caught 330 of the 392 innings this year for CU, 84 percent. The Miami, Fla., native started the year with a bang, homering in the season opener at North Alabama and batting.317 through the fi rst 33 games of the year. But over the last 21 contests, he has found his stride at the plate, particularly with the longball, belting nine home runs with 24 RBIs in the 21 outings and batting.413 (26-for-63) during the stretch. On a day in which the wind was howling, blowing out to dead centerfi eld, the righthander struck out a season-high eight batters and did not walk anyone, one of his best efforts of the season. In his last four outings the Mt. Juliet, Tenn., native has three victories, giving up four runs on 17 hits in 16.0 innings of work with seven walks and 14 strikeouts. Post started the season very strong, not allowing an earned run in his fi rst 13.0 innings with two victories. But then he was injured in a start on March 6 at Oklahoma City Univ. and missed 17 days. His next start was very rough, allowing six runs on nine hits in 3.2 innings at Union Univ. He has made progress throughout the year and hopefully is hitting his stride as the Bulldogs enter the postseason. For the year Post is 6-2 with a 2.90 ERA and 37 strikeouts in 40.1 innings of work. Frazier likes the big days Senior Troy Frazier has struggled through some ups-and-downs this season for the Bulldogs, but the centerfi elder has a knack for posting big outings along the way. The Louisville, Ky., native has 11 games this season with three or more hits, including four four-hit outings. Frazier went 4-for- 6 with two doubles, a home run and two RBIs in Friday s series fi nale at Mid-Continent and recorded three hits in both games last weekend versus Lyon College with three doubles, a homer and fi ve RBIs. His patience has played a major role for the Bulldogs over the last 15 contests, with Frazier batting.426 (20-for-47) with seven doubles, four home runs, 15 RBIs and 17 runs scored. More importantly he has fi ve walks, has been hit fi ve times and only has four strikeouts during the 15-game stretch. In his previous 13 outings he had posted 14 strikeouts. For the season Frazier ranks ninth nationally in home runs (19) and 13th in total bases while batting.384 overall with 13 doubles, 60 RBIs and 59 runs scored. Kikla stays hot, continues to score Senior Sam Kikla has hit an especially hot stretch over the last four weeks, batting.500 (20-for- 40) in the past 13 games with four doubles, six home runs, 16 RBIs and 23 runs scored during his current 13-game hitting streak. He also has seven walks and has been hit six times in the 13 outings. Kikla has scored multiple runs in eight of the 13 contests, including the last fi ve games. The Malabar, Fla., native ranks third nationally in runs scored with 77 and second in runs scored per game. He has been a vital cog in the Bulldog offense all season with his multi-dimensional 2010 Cumberland Baseball skills, registering 11 doubles with 15 home runs and 59 RBIs as well. He leads the Bulldogs with 33 walks and ranks second with 13 stolen bases while batting.389 overall, also second on the club. Kikla led CU in nine offensive categories in 2009 and has posted a better overall campaign in his fi nal season in Lebanon. Series with Freed-Hardeman The Bulldogs are 15-9 against the Lions over the last seven seasons, including 9-3 at Ernest L. Stockton Field. CU had not swept Freed- Hardeman in a series since 2004 until this season when the Bulldogs won 17-6, 4-1 and 5-1 at home. FHU won three of the four meetings last season, including 7-6 and 14-3 in Henderson and 17 6 in Jackson at the TranSouth Championships. Max Kautz went 8-for-9 (.889) with two home runs, a double, six RBIs and six runs scored in the series earlier this season. Greg Appleton was 5-for-9 (.556) with two doubles and fi ve runs scored and Matt Greener added fi ve hits with three doubles and fi ve RBIs in the series. Shawn Schaefer allowed one run on four hits in seven innings in the opener, while Adam Sprague tossed three shutout frames of relief in the fi nal game of the series to earn a save and complete the sweep. Stockton Field W, 5-1 Miller scuffling a bit Senior Kris Miller was remarkable through the fi rst 44 games of the season for the Bulldogs, batting.401 with 15 doubles, 13 home runs, 55 RBIs and 48 runs scored. The New Caney, Texas, native always seemed to be driving home key runs and then scoring once Matt Greener drove him in. Miller s pace has slowed over the last 10 contests, batting.300 (12-for-40) with two dou-

5 bles, fi ve homers, 11 RBIs and 11 runs scored. He seemed to come out of his slump against Lyon College, collecting fi ve hits with a double, home run and four RBIs in the two games, but then went 0-for-7 in the fi rst two contests at Mid-Continent. He rebounded in the fi nale against MCU with a 5-for-6 effort with three home runs, fi ve RBIs and four runs scored. For the season Miller is batting.373 overall with 17 doubles, 18 home runs, 66 RBIs and 59 runs scored. One other stat of note for the everyday rightfi elder he has 24 walks this season and just 16 strikeouts, a remarkable feat for a guy who rarely takes strikes and does not get cheated in his at-bats. Tidbits Cumberland owns 46-8 record this year, the 21st 40-win campaign in 27 years since CU became a four-year institution starting with the 1984 season. The Bulldogs also have seven 50- win campaigns, all since 1997 Senior Brian Karahalios picked up his fi rst career home run last week at Mid-Continent, a solo shot in the fi rst game of the series. The Jacksonville, Fla., native had fi ve hits in the series against MCU, raising his season average to.386 overall with eight doubles and 22 RBIs Senior Max Kautz registered a seven-game hitting streak from April 10-23, batting.600 (12-for-20) with two doubles, four home runs, 14 RBIs and 10 runs scored. He was 8-for-9 (.889) with two home runs, a double, six RBIs and six runs scored in the series against Freed-Hardeman during the seven-game stretch. 12 12 Woody Hunt Head Coach Belmont Univ./ th Season 1, (.708) overall Cumberland University owes a great debt of gratitude to legendary and Hall of Fame head coach Woody Hunt for his great service not only to the baseball program but also to the athletic department and the University as well as the community of Lebanon. Hunt begins his 28th season as head coach of the Bulldogs in 2009 and his 31st with the Cumberland program. He has amassed an impressive resume along the way and continues to add to his credentials with each passing year. But even more importantly Hunt continues to play a major role within the overall landscape of the University as well as in the Lebanon and Wilson County communities where so many of his former players have settled into lives after baseball. Hunt is one of only six coaches in history to register 1,000 career victories in the NAIA and heads into the 09 season with a 1, overall record. The Bulldogs have appeared in 10 NAIA World Series, including four in the last fi ve seasons, but his most crowning program achievement came when CU claimed the 2004 national championship in Lewiston, Idaho. The Bulldogs have fi nished as the national runner-up on two other occasions, in 1995 and Cumberland has won 16 conference championships during Hunt s tenure, including 10 in the Tennessee HUNT S YEAR-BY-YEAR Collegiate Athletic Conference (TCAC), fi ve in the Mid- South Conference (MSC) and one in the TranSouth Conference (TSAC). CU has four district championships, 11 NAIA regional titles and has played in fi ve super regionals as well. The program has posted 20 seasons with 40 or more victories, including 16 of the last 17 years, while registering 50 or more wins seven times, all in the last dozen seasons. The 2004 squad set the school-record for victories with 59. The Bulldogs have produced 51 NAIA All-Americans, including Steve Green, the only three-time All-American in program history. Seventy-two of Hunt s former players have signed professional contracts. The Bulldogs have posted a record over the last six seasons with fi ve NAIA World Series appearances, one runner-up fi nish and one national title. Hunt has also achieved individual success in the awards category, claiming 16 Coach of the Year honors, including the 2006 Rawlings National Coach of the Year award. He is a seven-time Southeast Region Coach of the Year and has also been a fi nalist for the National Coach of the Year Award four times. Perhaps his greatest achievement lies in the facilities in which his team plays, practices and dresses. Cumberland has one of the fi nest baseball facilities in the nation, second to none in the NAIA, with Ernest L. Stockton Field and its 500 chairback seats and stateof-the-art press box, the Benton Jennings Indoor Hitting Complex and the Jeanette C. Rudy Clubhouse.
