16 Minor League Clips Twins' Jay highlights Pitchers of the Week Sam Dykstra MiLB.com - 6/6/16 It's been a good week to be Tyler Jay. On Tuesday, the Twins' No. 3 prospect put together his best start as a professional. On Friday, he was named to the Florida State League South Division All-Star roster. Now he's been tapped as the Class A Advanced circuit's Pitcher of the Week for the first time in his young career. Jay took home the award for his performance against St. Lucie in which he scattered two hits and a walk while striking out a career-high 11 in eight innings to lead Fort Myers to a 4-0 win at home. It was the longest outing of the 22-year-old's career, beating out a seven-inning start at Bradenton on May 11. Jay needed 98 pitches to get through those eight frames, throwing 73 strikes, and faced just one batter over the minimum. Afterward, he told MiLB.com that he wasn't exactly feeling his best going into what would be a gem. "What's ironic is that was probably the worst I've ever warmed up before a game," he said after that Tuesday start. "I had an extra day off and I was a little amped up. When that happens, my bullpens tend to be a little wild, but everything returned to normal when I got out there. Even my changeup, which I'm still working on because I never threw it as a reliever, was working well for me. Everything ended up being on point. I couldn't have asked for anything better." MLB.com's No. 55 overall prospect improved to 4-4 with a 2.44 ERA, 1.06 WHIP, 55 strikeouts and walks through nine starts (51 2/3 innings) with the Miracle this season. He leads the FSL with a 2.43 FIP and ranks fourth with a 9.6 K/9. Taken with the sixth overall pick of the 20 Draft, the southpaw was a reliever during his college days at the University of Illinois, but the Twins quickly made it known that they wanted to make him a starter, based on his potential for a good four-pitch mix. Jay stumbled out of the gate this season with a 5.12 ERA in four April starts (19 1/3 innings) but was astonishingly good in May, allowing three earned runs all month en route to a 0.84 ERA with 38 strikeouts over five starts (32 1/3 innings). That run of form has, at least temporarily, laid to rest any thoughts that Jay is best positioned in the bullpen. "Starting is really fun, but to be honest, it's hard to choose," Jay told MiLB.com last week. "I've been lucky to experience the best of both worlds. The adrenaline rush you get as a closer is awesome, but when you're out there starting and get to work through so many different scenarios... I'm falling in love with it more and more every day. I'm definitely getting used to it." The old Berrios, the real Berrios, was back and setting down hitter after hitter as the Rochester Red Wings defeated the Buffalo Bisons 6-2 on Monday night at Frontier Field. 16

17 Coming off the worst outing of his minor-league career, Berrios knew he had to be at his best. In a battle with Buffalo for the lead in the International League s North Division, it was critical for the Red Wings to start a stretch of four straight games against the Bisons with a victory. But more importantly for the hard-throwing right-hander, he needed to find himself. Since posting his first major league victory with the Minnesota Twins at Houston on May 2, he had won just once in five starts and had allowed 22 runs in that span. One of those losses came last Tuesday, when he gave up 10 hits, two walks and seven earned runs in a 9-3 loss at Indianapolis. He lasted just five innings that night. It was the most hits he d ever allowed in a start, at any level. The seven runs were a Triple-A high. That s hardly what is expected from best young arm in the organization. This was an important start for him, manager Mike Quade said after the Wings improved to an IL-best We wanted to see a lot better than we saw the last three starts. They saw domination. Berrios allowed just three hits, walked one and struck out 11 in eight innings. The runs he allowed were solo homers to Casey Kotchman. He threw only 93 pitches and was consistently hitting between 93 and 95 mph with his fastball. Finally, Berrios said with a smile. When you have a bad day, the good days feel better. Berrios was effective because he threw strikes and hit spots, and he did so with a fastball-first approach. His command was so much better tonight, Quade said. I think that was the problem since he came back (from the Twins), getting a feel for his fastball and even his off-speed stuff. I didn t throw one curve in the first inning. That s where it starts, with the fastball, and then build on that. Dalton Pompey started the game with an opposite-field single on the second pitch of the game, but Berrios fanned Andy Burns and then ended the inning with a double play. That started a string of 11 straight batters retired, and seven were on strikeouts. My last start didn t really go well so tonight I go out there and was aggressive with every pitch, Berrios said. He also was very aware of his arm motion. He believed in recent starts that hitters could tell when a curve or change-up was coming just from his arm action. My fastball I was aggressive and my secondary pitches I was too easy, he said. So on Monday he said he made sure his arm motion the same, regardless of what pitch he threw. This is the learning process, Quade said. He has great stuff but you have to go through some failure. Everybody does. But he had a foundation to go back to with the success he had here last year (6-2, 2.62 ERA, 83 strikeouts in 75 2/3 innings,.212 opponent s batting average), and the success he s had throughout his career. His teammates gave him runs to work with, too. Adam Brett Walker drove home Eddie Rosario in the second, Jorge Polanco and Rosario had RBIs in the third, John Ryan Murphy had an RBI single in the fourth and Logan Schafer drilled a solo homer in the sixth as the Wings built a 5-1 lead. KEVINO@gannett.com Game night The matchup: Red Wings vs. Buffalo Bisons (Triple-A affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays). 17
