8 MINOR LEAGUE CLIPS Potent offense could carry Rochester Red Wings to playoff berth Sal Maiorana Democrat & Chronicle April 5, 2017 Don t think for a skinny second that manager Mike Quade is complaining about the predicament he finds himself in as the Rochester Red Wings open their 2017 International League season Thursday afternoon up the Thruway in Syracuse. This team the Minnesota Twins have assembled is going to step off the bus swinging, and it stands to reason that the Wings will be able to bludgeon some pitching staffs in their quest to earn just the fourth playoff berth in 21 seasons at Frontier Field. The issue for Quade, one that no manager truly minds, is trying to figure out which names to write on the lineup card every day, given the roster full of hitters he has at his disposal. It s going to be one heck of a deal to figure out who s playing and when, Quade said of a group that features players who can get on base, players who can steal bases, and players who can send balls rocketing over the fences. Yeah, it s something. We will not lack for competition here, that s for sure. Normally that s a good thing, too. It is, especially for a team that didn t do a whole lot on offense in 2016 besides hit home runs. The Wings finished last year, but that was only good for third place in the tough North Division, and it left them 4.5 games behind second-place Lehigh Valley in the wild-card race. One of the problems was that while the Wings tied for the league-lead in home runs with 129 (27 by the now departed Adam Brett Walker), they ranked 10th in the 14-team league in on-base percentage (.315) and 12th in batting average (.248). Manufacturing runs was not a strong suit. This year, barring a string of injuries and/or call-ups, the Wings have the potential to keep the scoreboard operator fully engaged. I d say 1 through 9 is capable of changing the game, said infielder Tommy Field. Just good offensive players. We ve got it all. It s kind of crazy. A lot of the guys in this clubhouse have been extremely good players in other organizations and it s pretty fortunate for us to all end up together in the same place. Among the newcomers, let s start with third baseman Matt Hague. When last we saw Hague in America (he played in Japan last season), he was destroying the IL as a member of the Buffalo Bisons in 2015 when he won the league MVP award. That season his slash line was.338 batting average/.416 on-base/.885 OPS (on-base plus slugging) as he pounded out 33 doubles and 11 home runs while driving in 92 runs in 136 games. I m just glad he didn t come back to this league and we had to figure how to get him out, Quade said with a laugh. The Twins also signed infielder Ben Paulsen who, in three stints with the Colorado Rockies since 2014 has played 186 games and in 517 plate appearance has a career OPS of.762. Outfielder J.B. Shuck has 364 games in the bigs with the Angels, White Sox, Astros and Indians. Though he s coming off a disappointing 2016 season split between Chicago and triple-a Charlotte, the soon-to-be 30-year-old who was fifth in the American League rookie of the year balloting in 2013 brings a wealth of experience to the club, as well as a reliable glove. Outfielder Quintin Berry has major league experience with four clubs, and last year he stole 35 bases and had a.348 OBP for triple-a Salt Lake City. They join returnees such as Field (42 RBI and a guy who can play second, third and short); first basemen/dh s Kennys Vargas (15 HRs, 58 RBI) and ByungHo Park (22 HRs between Rochester and the Twins); outfielder Daniel Palka (13 HRs in 54 games); and solid fielding catcher John Ryan Murphy (the former Yankee backup who s looking to regain his batting stroke). You look around, this is a great group, said Shuck. Some veteran guys and you sprinkle in some young guys. We ve got some talent, they know how to play the game. We re going to score some runs. 8

9 On the mound, Jose Berrios gets the Opening Day start against the Chiefs, coming off a season in which he was 10-5 with a 2.51 earned-run average and a terrific.0998 WHIP (walks/hits per innings pitched) in Rochester. He has great stuff, he s just got to locate it and get it consistent, Quade said of the Twins top pitching prospect, who got hit hard (8.02 ERA) in 14 starts for the Twins. That s a bad place to be up there if you can t locate; those guys are pretty good and I think he found that out. Behind Berrios in the rotation, Quade will send out newcomer Nick Tepesch, lefty Jason Wheeler, Aaron Slegers, and lefty David Hurlbut. Tepesch has major league experience with the Rangers and Dodgers; Wheeler led the Wings with 11 wins last year; Slegers won 10 at double- A Chattanooga, the same place where Hurlbut struggled last year. In the bullpen, Quade hasn t decided on a closer, but that s OK because he never really decided on one last year, either. He has some nice options in righties Alex Wimmers, J.T. Chargois and Drew Rucinski, and he s also still sorting out the bridge guys. Couple new guys in the mix, and a couple new guys in the bullpen, said Quade. That s always fun, and it ll be a heck of a challenge for them. We had so many pitchers last year in and out of here. One thing you hope is the big league club plays well and stays healthy and the movement is minimized here, but we all know that s not the reality. But it can t be as much as last year. Will this be a playoff team? It s impossible to know because minor league rosters are so transient, but if this group stays together, it sure looks like the best of the three teams Quade has managed here. Everything is on paper, so these guys need to get out and perform, Quade said. I know these guys will give us a great effort, but we ll see how it plays out. Jake Mauer's Double-A managerial debut spoiled by BayBears David Paschall Times Free Press April 7, 2017 Thursday night marked the Class AA managerial debut for Jake Mauer, who reached the same level as a player in the Minnesota Twins organization before that career was cut short. Mauer's Chattanooga Lookouts opened their 140-game schedule with a 2-0 loss to the Mobile BayBears before an announced crowd of 2,956 at AT&T Field. The 38-year-old spent the past four seasons managing Cedar Rapids (Iowa) of the Single-A Midwest League to an impressive record. "These guys are a little further along, so it's a little less babysitting and a little more having to create that mental edge," Mauer said. "The baseball is going to be the same. This field is the same size as it is in Minnesota." The Lookouts managed just three hits against Mobile, with BayBears starting pitcher Tyler Carpenter allowing two hits in six innings while striking out five. Mobile took a 1-0 lead in the fifth inning when Caleb Adams scored on a throwing error, and the BayBears made it 2-0 in the ninth on Luis Tejada's home run to right field. Mauer replaced Doug Mientkiewicz, who managed Chattanooga the past two seasons to a record and the 2015 Southern League title. Mientkiewicz is back managing the Fort Myers Miracle of the high Single-A Florida State League, where he can be with his family. "We're excited to have Jake in Double-A this year after spending the last several years in Cedar Rapids and taking that team to the playoffs a number of times," Twins player development director Brad Steil said. "It's an interesting comparison with Doug. They are both very smart, intelligent baseball guys, but Doug probably has a little more fiery personality than Jake, while Jake is a little more laid-back." Said Lookouts outfielder Travis Harrison: "They're a little different, but they're both great dudes and both great coaches. Jake will stand up for his guys, too, and he'll tell you when you've done wrong, but it's a little different temperament. He's just as passionate, but in a different way." Mauer managed Fort Myers for three seasons before his four-year stint in Cedar Rapids. He struggled to a record with the Miracle but believes he has learned from those years in a business that continually puts more weight on development than victories. "Every year you learn something that hopefully makes you better, and you're always trying to grow," Mauer said. "The personnel is always going to change depending on what the parent club will do. You just try to prepare each group of guys that you get the best that you can. 9

10 "Wins and losses are nice, and they are important, but it boils down to us trying to get these guys ready to play in Minnesota." Mauer the older brother of Twins player Joe Mauer, a six-time All-Star harbored hopes of playing for Minnesota. He hit.319 with Fort Myers in 2005 and was promoted to Double-A New Britain (Conn.) of the Eastern League, where he hit.250. He hoped to continue that ascension in spring 2006, but those hopes were snuffed quickly. "It was kind of decided for me, to be honest with you," Mauer said. "I had an elbow injury that I'm still dealing with to this day. I came into spring training that year and couldn't throw, and on the last day of spring, I took my stuff out of the players' clubhouse and into the coaches' side. It was a whirlwind day, going from a player to a coach. "I got released and got another job in like five minutes." Mauer became hitting coach for the Gulf Coast League Twins and became their manager two years later. "You're more at peace with it when you can't physically do it, but I was still only 26 years old," he said. "Everybody says I would have made it if I didn't get hurt, but I don't know if that's true or not. I would like to think I would have had a chance. "The surgeries just didn't work out." Baseball, however, has. Just in a different light, including 139 more games this season. "I'm probably not as animated as Doug, but I like to compete," Mauer said. "That's the reason we're all here." C.R. Kernels get Midwest League opener postponed at Beloit Jeff Johnson The Gazette April 6, 2017 BELOIT, Wis. The Cedar Rapids Kernels had their 2017 Midwest League season opener against the Beloit Snappers postponed Thursday night at Pohlman Field because of wet conditions. The teams will play a double-header instead Friday at 4:30 p.m. The pair of games will be seven innings each. Cedar Rapids home opener is Saturday at 5:05 p.m. 10
