Chapter Director s Message The first half of September was quiet with not a whole lot going on. Let s see. Wing Ding 40 ended on the 1 st and then people meandered back to California at their own paces. Then the scheduled lunch ride to Tony s was postponed (again) due to renovations, but I already mentioned that last month. However, the third Saturday of the month rolled around and we as a chapter got back together for our monthly chapter gathering. We had some stuff going on at this gathering and managed to get it all done in the allotted time. Besides all the usual stuff, we had special stuff. You may think stuff is stuff, but not all stuff is of the same caliber. So, enough on stuff. First up, Ralph started the meeting, we pledged allegiance to the flag and then Ralph swore in Bob and Donna Fletcher as our new Membership Enhancement Coordinators (MEC), and we also stood with them and got sworn in again. When it comes to be swearing, I prefer this over the other type. Ralph then presented us all (the four of us) with new officer patches, rockers and pins and our certificates of appointment. We (Gary & Lori) also got Chapter Director rockers to go on the backs of our vests. Wow, how exciting! But wait, there s more. (I ve wanted to write that for the longest time eat your heart out Sal). Next up, Ralph present Bob Gilbert with his level II patch and as if that wasn t enough, Ralph then presented Bob with his level III patch. I think this is the most up front and photo-opp time that Bob s ever had since I ve been with the chapter. Way to go Bob! Well, Ralph wasn t done. No he wasn t. Boy, I lead my first gathering and Ralph hogs the show, kinda. :o\ So next up is John Hein who gets presented with an officer patch, rockers and pin for being our Ride Coordinator. John had already been sworn in by Nancy Clark back in May, but even with CA2S and his crazy schedule and all, he finally got presented. Thank you John for stepping up! (and also for patiently waiting) Up next, Ralph (yep him again) gets to present Road Captain rockers to eight of the ten members that attended the Road Captain and Group Riding seminars presented by Ralph and Robynn back on June 23 rd. I know these new Road Captains want to see their names in print so they are Douglas, John, Roger, Flip, Paul, Ruth, Lori and Gary. Hoot, hoot, hoot! Way to go! That wasn t all the presenting for the morning. Next up, Gary (finally) presented Bob and Donna Fletcher with a You Make A Difference certificate and pins for taking over the MEC position, which we happened to have held for the last 3-1/2 years. Thank you, thank you, and thank you! Continued on Next Page CA2S Shark Bytes 2
Okay, still Gary s turn. Next up, the Chapter Participation Pin (PP) presentation. Gary presented nine PP 2018 hanger bars to multi-year recipients Bob & Donna, Ralph & Robynn, John H., Douglas, Roger and Gary & Lori. But that s not all. There were three newbie first-time recipients that received both the Participation Pin and the 2018 hanger bar. They were Flip and Alan & Sandy. A special Hats-Off to all the PP recipients! The rest of the get-together went as usual with the prize raffles, the raffle and the wingnut. Expect some changes in the near future regarding the raffles and the wingnut. Nothing drastic, maybe. After the gathering three bikes, a trike and a bike & sidecar participated in a Parking Lot Practice (PLP) over at the Great Mall upstairs parking area. Nice location found by Ralph. What, him again? I helped with setting up the track since I couldn t ride our trike because the clutch went out. We started out on our trike in the morning, but didn t get too far from the house before it started acting up. Lucky us, only in the sense that we were close to home. All went well during the PLP and everybody got to work on these perishable skills. So much for Saturday the 15 th. On Friday the 21 st, John, Douglas and Roger did a RTE to The Running Iron. We haven t been there yet, but I ve heard good reviews from our members. John said that they managed to take a route that none of them had ever taken before. Inconceivable!! Next on the calendar was the ride out to Santa Rosa to the Charles M. Schulz Museum on the 29 th. John, Douglas, Roger and Bob G. took a route through San Francisco and across the Golden Gate Bridge and stopped for breakfast/lunch at the Piner Café before making it to the museum where they stayed for 2-1/2 hours. Lucky for them it was free admission day. Overall, they did about 250 miles. Elsewhere in this newsletter is a list of upcoming events and rides scheduled through the end of The two biggest events remaining are the CA2S Halloween Party on October 27 at Paul & Ruth s place in Boulder Creek and the CA2S Christmas Party the evening of December 15 th at the Omega Restaurant. Please try to make these events as a lot of time and planning goes into them. Besides, they re lots of fun! Until next month, be active, show some chapter pride, and of course ride! 6 Rider Education Motorcycle Parking 101 Yeah, I know...you re probably thinking, What could be so hard about parking a motorcycle that could possibly warrant an entire article? Well, if you are on group rides, you will be sharing parking lots and spaces with many of your closest friends! If you ve been riding for years and years and have never: Tipped over while backing your bike into a parking spot. Laid your bike over because your foot slipped on loose debris or a wet surface. Needed a little push into or out of a parking space. Had your kickstand sink into the ground or asphalt. Had your bike tampered with or stolen....then you should probably count your lucky stars and go buy a lottery ticket. However, if you re like most of us and have at one time or another encountered one or more of the above scenarios, this article might be worth taking a quick look over. Security: I don t know about you, but depending on where and for how long I plan to leave my bike parked, I take different precautions to keep it safe and secure. For example, if I'm: Fueling up and need to step inside the store for only a few seconds, I lock the ignition switch. Stopping for lunch and I can see my bike from where I m sitting, I lock the ignition switch and forks (never know when nature might call and you need hit the john). Stopping overnight, I try to get a ground floor room near an exit so I can see my bike from the window of my room, lock the ignition switch and forks, and try to secure my bike to another bike or solid object using my cable and place a weatherproof cover over my bike. Depending on your own personal experience, the above examples may seem like overkill, and to some of you they may seem like I'm leaving my bike exposed to possible theft. To me, there s a fine line between paranoia and precaution. I sure as heck don t want my bike stolen, but at the same time I don t want to be a nervous Nelly and go through the hassle of always locking my bike up tighter than a drum whenever I want to buy a pack of gum. If I had to give any advice I d have to err on the side of caution, because taking a little more time to properly secure your bike is a lot better than having your bike stolen and never seeing it again. Surface Hazards: You should always: Watch for surface debris, loose and uneven surfaces and wet or potentially slippery spots where oil accumulates. Be aware of surfaces where you could lose your footing. Take care that your tires and feet do not become contaminated with fluids when entering or exiting a parking space. Continued on Next Page CA2S Shark Bytes 6
Sloped Surfaces & Stability: Park on level ground whenever possible. Leave your bike in first gear to keep it from rolling. Park with your front-end facing uphill so your bike doesn t roll forward and retract the kickstand. Turn your handlebars to the left to increase stability. Place a small piece of flat metal or other solid object under your kickstand when parking on hot asphalt or wet ground. In a pinch, you can use a crushed beer can...oops...i mean soda can. Parking Spots: You should always: Park off the street in a parking lot whenever possible. Find out if there are local parking restrictions. Parallel Parking: You should always: Pull into the parking space and maneuver within its boundaries. Take your time positioning your bike once you are safely inside the parking space. Diagonal Parking: You should always: Back in rather than pulling in forwards for easy departure. Park near the back of the parking space so other drivers see your bike before pulling into your spot. Mechanical Arms (John Osborn, this is for you): You should always: Move quickly through mechanical arms that control access to parking lots. Wait for any vehicles in front of you to pull ahead and watch for mechanical arms to lower prematurely if your bike is lost in the detection loop. Parking at the end of a row: You should always: Leave plenty of room for vehicles to be able to make the turn. Place your bike near the back of the parking spot so drivers can see your bike before pulling into your spot. Never thought there was so much to consider when parking your bike, huh? A few simple precautions can go a long way toward insuring your parked motorcycle is safe and will be there when you return. Ride Safely, Ride Often, and HEY! Be careful out there! CA2S Shark Bytes 7

2018 CA2S Individual of the Year Well we are coming up on the end of the year. Only 3 months left to go. It looks like CA-2S has some fun events planned for October. Another great Halloween party is coming up. I know last years was a lot of fun. Ride for Kids is coming up this weekend on the 7 th. I hope to make this year s ride since I missed last years. It is for a great cause and is always a fun event. 2 years ago, we had some interesting weather that day with a mix of heavy rain and hail. I had this pic from 2 years ago of those that attended. I want to say thank you again for the honor of being named IOY for There are some great people in our group who have spent a lot of time and effort organizing all the fun stuff we get to do. Each one of them deserves that honor in my opinion. Hope to see you all soon. Maybe at the RFK or the Halloween party. Bob Siler CA2S Shark Bytes 9

We had four members attend the ride yesterday to the Schultz Museum. Douglas and I in chapter shirts, Roger and Bob (Bus driver Bob) with out. We met at the Los Altos Burger King at 9:00 am and KSU at 9:15. Douglas led the ride. He took us a scenic route through San Francisco and the Presidio, crossed the Golden Gate Bridge then up Hwy 101 to Santa Rosa. We stopped for breakfast/lunch at Piner Cafe. It was a really good place and everyone agreed we would come back. Hit some light rain leaving the restaurant but it was only one mile to the Schultz museum. Wouldn't you know it, it was a free weekend at the museum so no admission charge. If you are a Peanuts Comic fan this place is for you. We ended spending about 2 1/2 hrs there. I wanted to take a picture of all of us to show folks what they missed, but the consensuses was We left around 3:30, it looked like more rain was coming so we but on our anti-rain gear to guarantee no more rain, which kept the rain away. I arrived home at 7:00 pm and rode a total of 250 miles JOHNHEIN Roger, John, Douglas, Bob The RTE went very good. It was Roger, Douglas and myself. We took a route none of us have taken before. The Running Iron was excellent as always. The only issue I had was getting everyone back on the bikes after the 2 1/2 lunch. This was a SAFE ride, Safe, Alive and Fully Enjoyed. JOHNHEIN RTE.
