3 How to Read This Report Introduction This report shows how many customers used the CTA bus and rail systems for the year. Ridership statistics are given on a system-wide and route/station-level basis. Ridership is primarily counted as boardings, that is, customers boarding a transit vehicle (bus or rail). On the rail system, there is a distinction between station entries and total rides, or boardings. The official totals on the Annual Summary report show the total number of boardings made to CTA vehicles. How are customers counted? Rail On the rail system, a customer is counted as an entry each time he or she passes through a turnstile to enter a station. In the Rail Entries section of the report, customers are not counted when they make a free cross-platform transfer from one rail line to another, since they don t pass through a turnstile to do so. Some CTA stations serve more than one line. The Rail Entries report does not show the number of customers boarding each line at such stations, simply the total number of customers who entered the station. For example, even though Howard station is reported as part of the Red Line, customers also enter at Howard to ride the Purple and Yellow Lines. Bus Boardings are recorded using the bus farebox and farecard reader. In the uncommon situation when there is an operating error with the farebox and it cannot be determined on which route a given trip s boardings should be allocated, these boardings are tallied as Route 0. These are not included in the Ridership by Route section of the report, however they are included in the monthly bus system totals. How do I compare this year to last year? What is a Calendar Adjustment? When comparing one year to another, it is often best to use the weekday, Saturday, and Sunday averages rather than totals. A monthly or annual total is affected by not only the number of weekdays, Saturdays, and Sundays, which can vary somewhat from year to year, but also based on what days of the week certain holidays fall on. For example, May 2013 and 2014 had the following breakdown of days: Weekdays Saturdays 4 5 Sunday/Holidays 5 5 As weekdays typically have much higher ridership than Saturdays, May 2013 would report higher total monthly ridership than May 2014, all else equal. Using averages by day type circumvents this problem. For the purposes of month-to-month and year-over-year comparisons, the report also includes a Calendar Adjusted annual total of bus, rail, and system ridership. This is calculated by applying a normalization factor to a given month s total ridership figures to correct any discrepancies in the number of weekdays, Saturdays, and Sundays, thereby making the data comparable. Note that New Year s Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas Day are considered as Sundays for the purposes of ridership reporting, as CTA operates a Sunday schedule on these holidays. All other holidays are reported as the type of day they fall on. Page i

4 Executive Summary System Overview Total bus and rail system ridership decreased 4.6% in compared with Rail ridership declined by 3.7% in while bus ridership declined by 5.3%. Year-to-date, total bus and rail ridership has declined 4.4% compared with the same period a year ago, with rail ridership down 3.4% and bus ridership down 5.4%. Ridership continues to be affected by low gas prices and competition from rideshare companies like Uber and Lyft. Bus Bus ridership decreased 5.3% this month compared with a year ago. Year-to-date bus ridership decreased 5.4% from a year ago. Bus ridership was heavily impacted by two major snowstorms and poor weekend weather. Rail rail ridership declined 3.7% compared with Year-to-date, total rail ridership has declined 3.4%. The best performing branches were the Yellow Line, which was up 6% compared to last year and the Dearborn Subway, which was flat. Page ii

5 Monthly Notes The following changes in CTA service over the past year have a potential impact on this month s ridership figures. Systemwide Service Impacts Station Closures Rail stations c an be closed occasionally f or construction. The closures can result in what appears to be very dramatic increases or decreases (e.g. > 20%) in average daily rail ridership on a year-over-year basis both f or the station being closed and potentially for nearby stations as well. When service is suspended or rerouted on the rail system, service is maintained by a bus shuttle connecting the closed or bypassed rail stations. Riders on this shuttle are tallied in the Bus Ridership by Route section as Route #1001 Shuttle/Special Event Route. Bus Service Impacts Bus Service Reroutes #6 Jackson Park Exp (Oct 24 until further notice), #157 Streeterville/Taylor (Nov 1, 2016-Sep 1, 2018), #65 Grand (Mar 3, -Mar 30, 2018), #82 Kimball/Homan (Mar 23-Apr 24 or completion, #49 Western, X49 Western Exp (Mar 23-Apr 14 or completion, #26 South Shore Exp, #30 South Chicago (Mar 20- Apr 10 or completion, #52 Kedzie/California (Mar 13-Apr 10 or completion), #78 Montrose (Mar 22-Apr 8 or completion), #4 Cottage Grove #111A Pullman Shuttle & #115 Pullman/115th (Jan 30-Mar 27 or completion), #59 59 th /61 st (Fed 28-Mar 17 or completion), #53 Pulaski (Feb 8-Mar 8 or completion), #73 Armitage (Feb 6- Mar 3 or completion). New Bus Routes and Routings New #95 95 th route was added on 09/04/16 in replacement of #95E 93 rd /95 th and #95W West 95 th to enable passengers to ride through the Red Line without transferring. #31 31 st Street is a new pilot route that was added 09/06/16. Buses are rerouted due to construction of the Washington/Wabash Loop elevated Station, maintenance on the Madison Street Bridge, and Washington Street Bridge over the South Branch Canal of the Chicago River. Rail Service Impacts Temporary Service Suspensions and Reroutes Due to ongoing construction activity to maintain and modernize the CTA rail system, some lines experience periodic day, night, & weekend closures or reroutes.
