2 Council Meetings The 4 H Youth County Council meetings are open to 4 H members age 9 and older. Meetings provide opportunities for youth to meet, share ideas, plan, and implement activities with other youth throughout the county. Each club is encouraged to send 2 3 representatives to each meeting. Club representatives typically include the President and 1 2 Council Delegates. The next County Council Meeting is on August 24, 2009 at 7:00 p.m. at the Extension office at 200 Taylor Street, Ste. 500, Fort Worth, Tx Co. Council Scheduled Meetings August October Feb April May Back to School Adult Leader Meetings The next Adult Leader meeting will be on September 28, 2009 at the Extension office at 200 Taylor Street, Ste. 500, Fort Worth, Tx Each club is invited to send representatives to participate in these meetings. 3 EVENTS & PROJECT NEWS Banquet Volunteers Needed We will need volunteers to help with the 4 H Awards Banquet. The jobs are varied: bringing food, set up, decorating, clean up, serving, seating honored guests and checking in guests. If you can help with any of these please contact Tracy Smith at or Jim McCullough at H Awards Banquet The County Awards Banquet is a special event which recognizes the youth for their diligent efforts throughout the year. This year s date will be Friday, August 14, 2009, at 7:00 p.m. at the Resource Connection, 2300 Circle Dr., Fort Worth, Please mark this event on your calendar and plan to attend. Stars of the Future Texas 4-H Technology Team Applications Now On-Line For more than five years, the Texas 4 H and Youth Development Program has had an active state level youthadult partnership group working in the area of technology. The Texas 4 H Technology Team is currently recruiting 4 H members, volunteers, parents, AND County Extension Agents that are interested in submitting applications to serve on the team. Applications will be accepted from any 4 H member from 14 years and older as of September 1, Youth and adults selected to serve on the team have the opportunity to assist in the development and delivery of educational workshops throughout Texas, as well as the nation. Over the past years, 4 H members have traveled annually to California to work with the California Technology Team in teaching workshops at the California 4 H Leadership Conference, as well as traveling to the national Children, Youth and Families at Risk conference. Applications will be accepted until September 1, 2009 and can be downloaded in Word format from the Texas 4 H and Youth Development website at: h.tamu.edu/youth/technology.html Public Speaking Workshop The Toastmaster/4 H Public Speaking project is a highly popular project which teaches youth how to develop their communication skills in a fun, supportive environment. The project meets at the Extension office on 8 consecutive Thursday evenings, from 7 9 p.m. While the project is free, it requires a commitment of attendance and participation. The Fall semester will begin in late September, and preference is given to first time participants. To reserve a space in the project, a parent may contact Nanci Swindle at or nf swindle@tamu.edu A parent may register multiple children in their family, but may not register children in other families. Nanci will begin taking registrations for the Fall semester on August 18, Confidence is preparation. Everything else is beyond your control. ~Richard Kline Page 3

Each contest division has specific requirements. Some require that the contestant place 1st at District, while a few permit 1st & 2nd place advancement. We are very excited to have a large number of Tarrant County youth qualify for State and perform well as they competed with youth from across the state of Texas! 8 GET READY FOR THE NEW 4-H YEAR Preparing for the New 4-H Year on 4-H Connect Beginning August 1, H CON NECT will begin the new enrollment period for the upcoming year. Even though the 4 H year does not begin until September 1, 2009 the system will allow enrollment by counties and 4 H families to begin as clubs start meeting in August. For the H year all enrollments must be entered in 4 H Connect. Starting August 1, 2009, a person can reactivate their 4 H membership profile or create a new membership profile for the next 4 H year. DO NOT START TO REACTI VATE OR CREATE PROFILES BEFORE AUGUST 1, 2009 FOR THE YEAR. Please look over the creating a 4 H profile material on the 4 H website. It will help you when you start entering your information on the site. Club Officer Training Ambassadors If you want to share your excitement about 4 H with others, you may want to consider the Ambassador program. 4 H Ambassadors learn how to interpret the programs to government officials, civic groups, and the general public. Applications are due October 1. Details and application are available on the county 4 H website. Teen Leaders Program If you enjoy sharing your knowledge and skills with others, the Teen Leader Program may be a perfect fit. Teaching others, both formally and informally, is a great opportunity to develop leadership skills while helping others. Teen leaders may serve in a variety of capacities, such as project leaders, activity leaders, special assignments, etc. Whether you prefer to be out front or behind the scenes, if you are willing to serve, we have a job for you. Call the office for information at At 9:30 a.m., on Saturday, August 22, the 4 H Youth Council will host its annual Club Officer Training. Each club is encouraged to send its officers to this event. In addition, youth who may not currently hold an office, are invited to attend. This is a great opportunity to learn the skills to better enable officers to fulfill their positions in their clubs, as well as to have fun and meet other youth throughout the county. Please RSVP to Nanci at or nf swindle@tamu.edu One day can make a difference. One day 4-H is going to change Texas. This October 10th, all over our state, 4 H clubs will be going out into their communities to lend a helping hand in exciting new ways. What will you do? Choose something as simple as mowing a local neighbor's lawn, or organize hundreds of your 4 H friends and design a project that benefits your entire county. Whether you work by yourself or with other community groups it's all good! Sponsors and donors, we need your help! Get behind this unprecedented opportunity for outreach and help us show Texas, our country, and the world why 4 H IS the future! Be creative the sky's the limit! Let's join together and show everyone the power of 4 H one day! 9 State Fair of Texas Mark your calendars the annual State Fair of Texas begins September 25th and ends October 18, The State Fair takes place every year in Fair Park in Dallas, Texas. Livestock and cooking contests, entertainment stages, football and much more are on the agenda for the 2009 year. Bring your families and see what the State Fair of Texas is all about. Howdy!! Agriculture Awareness Day Tuesday, October 6, 2009 State Fair of Texas Over the past few years, Youth Leadership Day activities have varied; new events were included, formats were changed. To reach out and engage new participants, the Youth Educational Activities Committee promises a day of learning about Agriculture On Display in our daily lives. This year the State Fair Youth Leadership Day is Tuesday, October 6, The name has been changed to Agriculture Awareness Day in order to involve more of the community. For questions regarding these livestock shows please contact Ken Johnson at KDJohnson@ag.tamu.edu or call State Lamb & Goat Validation New for 2010 Texas 4 H/FFA Breeding Sheep Validation Program The Texas 4 H/FFA Breeding Sheep Validation Program has been initiated for the 2010 show season. Major shows that will be using the Breeding Sheep Validation program are the San Antonio, San Angelo, and Houston Livestock Shows. The Texas 4 H/FFA Breeding Sheep Program will be conducted in conjunction with the current Texas 4 H/FFA Market Lamb & Goat Validation Program. The ownership deadline for breeding sheep will be changed from November 1st to October 1st. Existing breeder tag numbers and tattoos will be used. Therefore, NO VALI DATION TAGS AND COUNTY TAT TOOS NUMBERS WILL BE RE QUIRED. The registration number for each animal will be recorded on the validation form and a copy of the original registration papers will be attached to the validation form. Nose prints and hair samples will be taken on all breeding ewes and rams. All breeding sheep will be validated in individual exhibitor names and not by families as conducted on the market animal validation program. Market Lamb & Goat tags will be $8.00 each and Breeding Sheep (Ewes & Rams) will cost $4.00 each. Deadline date for ordering is August 25, All late orders must be approved by Ken Johnson.
