N E W S L E T T E R D A T E Ocean City Primary School Volume 1 Issue 2 March 2015 The Philly Auto Show BY DJ My story is about The Auto Show in Philadelphia. They had all kinds of car brands. There were Jeep, Chevrolet, Honda, Cadillac, GM, Ram, Dodge, Jaguar, and Ford. I had four cars that I liked a lot. My very favorite car was the Jaguar, because this car can go up to 207 miles per hour. My second favorite car are the cars that can go up to 190 miles per hour. My third favorite car was the Mustang. The Mustang was all black with white stripes on it. Finally my last favorite car was the Ford because it could fit seven people and it had 2 little television screens. The car show had fun activities. I really liked this car test thing where you go in a car and it takes you around in a circle and you do not even have to touch the steering wheel because it does all the driving. I enjoyed going to the car show. I would like to go next year and I hope to see more cool cars. I N S I D E T H I S I S S U E : Playing Basketball 2 Manatees 2 Animals 4 Helen Keller 5 Sports 5 My Dog Gucci by Ella The Primary Express Team 7 Duck Tape Crea- 6 My dog Gucci is the best dog. He listens when you call his name, and when you tell him to get in his crate. When people come over, he doesn t act wild. When I say Gucci he comes over to me. I have to call his name when he needs to eat breakfast and dinner. He listens very well to his name. When my family and I need to go run an errand, I get out a treat and he gets right in his crate. Sometimes my family has company over, Gucci never gets wild. When I say wild, I mean jumping on people and not following the right rules. My dog Gucci is a bulldog. He likes to snuggle at night. Sometimes he thinks he is a human. I love Gucci.
P A G E 2 Playing Basketball by Brendan I think basketball is a fun sport AND YOU should play it. When I just started basketball it wasn t that hard for me because I have a basketball net in my backyard. I played against my brother Liam and that s how I got better. My brother and I always have a basketball game in our backyard. We kept practicing and practicing until we got great! We both play basketball, but Liam plays in a higher league because he is 12. Sometimes my older sister Emma who is sixteen, plays basketball in the backyard too. Oh wait, did I tell you? Oh, no I didn t! My sister plays basketball too, we all do. We keep practicing and practicing in our backyard. When basketball sign ups came, My brother Liam signed up first and then my older sister. The last person to sign up was me. Emma had practice on Friday and I had it on Saturday. Liam had one on Monday. So we all went to practice on those days. I had fun at practice. I saw my friend Billy and Kevin. I did workouts and worked on dribbling. The coach said, We have a game next week. I could not believe that we had a game after our first practice. When I got home I told my dad all about the practice and I told him that the coach said, We have a game next week. THAT S CRAZY, said my dad. So the day went on and I fell asleep. I woke up the next -continued on Page 3 When basketball sign ups came, my brother Liam signed up first and then my older sister. Mrs. Riley by Charles Mrs. Riley is an awesome teacher! Her favorite animal is a dog. She does not have a favorite book. Her least favorite animal is a spider. She loves the movie Under the Tuscan Sun. She likes Stephen King Novels. Her favorite food is lobster. She does not like oysters. She loves hockey. Her favorite color is cobalt blue. She does not like green. Her favorite state is Maine. She loves Superman. She loves when it is 10:00am. She does not like when it is 5:00 AM. Manatees by Skylar Do you know what a manatee is? It is a mammal that lives in the sea and can eat a lot of food every day. They are almost gone because people are hurting them by putting trash in the water or using fishing nets that they will get tangled up in. People are not allowed to feed, hunt, or ride them. They do not eat meat; they eat sea weed or any kind of weed or grass. You can adopt a manatee or donate to them you can save the manatees. T H E P R I M A R Y E X P R E S S
Continued from page 2 -Playing Basketball morning. My dad was still asleep and I heard his phone buzz. He got a text from my basketball coach that told him that I had practice today. I woke up my dad and I told him I had practice and he said, What time? I told my dad, I don t know. Then we heard a buzz and it said, It is 10:30AM. It was 9:30 and it was almost time for practice so my dad and I started to get dressed for my basketball practice. When we were done getting ready we heard Liam and Emma say, they had practice too. My dad said, What time is it. They said, 10:30. My dad and I looked at each other. We didn t know what to do. So my dad said, One of you guys can t go to practice! But no one said, I m not going to practice. So my dad had to take us all at the same time. Oh, I forgot to tell you that our practices are all at the same Gym. When practice was over my dad picked us up. I told my dad when I got home I had a game tomorrow versus Margate. I fell asleep and the next My 3rd Grade Teacher Mrs. Nugent- Berges by Bria morning I got ready for my game. The next day I woke my dad and I told him to get ready to drop me off to the game, so my dad got ready. When we were done getting ready we got in the car and picked up my friend Kevin. When we got to the game the referee said, Margate gets the ball first. They were dribbling the ball up and Kevin stole it. So we ran up the basketball court and Kevin passed it to me and I shot. I made it. Kevin and I kept on making our baskets and we won; only Kevin and I were making shots. We held the team on our back. Our team won and everyone was cheering. P A G E 3 I love every minute of it. Especially my students! Hello there, this is Bria reporting about my teacher, Mrs. Nugent- Berges! How old were you when you first started teaching? I was 22 years old. Why did you want to be a teacher? I love to help and work with children. I also love to see how my students grow through the year. Do you like teaching? I love every minute of it, especially my students! How many years have you been teaching? 10 years! What is your favorite thing about teaching? Watching my students grow How many grades have you taught? I have taught: 6 th, 7 th, 8 th, Kindergarten and now 3 rd. Which grade did you like teaching the best? I love teaching 3 rd grade; I have the most wonderful students! I love teaching! My Awesome Teacher Mrs. Naplacic by James My teacher is awesome! She lets us use and eat candy to solve fractions. She loves to be with her family except for when she has to do the dishes. I don t blame her. Maybe if she ate her favorite Italian food with apple crisp for dessert, she wouldn t mind doing the dishes. Her favorite animal is the wolf. She is very intrigued by them. She would be very happy to see a wolf, especially if it turned out to be orange, which is her favorite color. I know it wouldn t happen though! She loves reading books. Her favorite is The One and Only Ivan. She does not like any of the Harry Potter movies, although she does like the books. Mrs. Naplacic is a kind, and generous teacher. That s how awesome my teacher is!
P A G E 4 Animals by Michael There are tons of different animals in the wild. The total species is 1,740,330. That s a million, seven-hundred forty thousand, three-hundred thirty! Did you know that ostriches can run faster than horses? The male ostrich can roar like a lion. Kangaroos use their tail for balance, so if you lift a kangaroo s tail off the ground, it can t hop. Also, on average, there are 50,000 spiders in green areas. Another interesting fact is that not only tigers have stripes on their fur, but they do also have them on their skin, and no 2 tigers ever have the same stripes. To escape the grip of the crocodile s jaw, push on its eyeball. It ll let go instantly. Also, a cat has 32 muscles in each ear. And koala bears exclusively eat a certain type of leaves and nothing else. Also, the slowest fish is the seahorse, which moves along at about 0.01 mph. Finally, pigs can communicate constantly with one another; more than 20 vocalizations have been identified that pigs use in different situations, from wooing to mates to saying, I m hungry! These are some animal facts that I listed, and I really hope that you enjoy them! Mr. Barbour leads us in the songs. My favorite song is the Awana song. T&T Awana Club by Matthew There is Awana, Friday nights during the school year. There are three Awana clubs: the Cubbies, Sparks, and Truth and Training (T&T). I am in T&T. T&T wears green shirts. We always start by saluting the flag, and the Awana flag. Pastor O Brien leads us. T&T does games first. The bean bag toss is my favorite game. Mr. Thomas picks someone to throw the bean bag, and everyone else catches it. The game we do almost every week is dodge ball. After games, T&T eats snack. Next we go into the sanctuary to sing songs, and learn about the bible. Mr. Barbour leads us in the songs. My favorite song is the Awana song. It is usually Pastor O Brien or Mr. Barbour who does the bible lesson. We go upstairs to do verses. The handbook I m on has 56 sections. I have finished at least 14 sections so far. I do 2 sections a week. When were finished doing 7 sections we get an award to put on our shirts. When we finish verses, we go downstairs to meet with our parents. We walk to our car, and drive home. I love Awana! My Family by Alexis I think my family is the best. Why? Because they do cool stuff with me like take me to the rides on the board walk. I think my favorite family members are my MomMom, Poppy, Aunt Kim, and my Mom. I think my family is great. They are the ones who give me food, water and clothes. I love my family so much! I do appreciate them so much. I love my family s dogs. They are Lilly, Macy May, Harley, Sophia, and Chloe. Thank you family and pets. T H E P R I M A R Y E X P R E S S
P A G E 5 Helen Keller by Avery Helen Keller helped many people even though she could not see or hear. Helen Keller was born on June 27, 1880 in Tuscumbia, Alabama. When she was one in a half she became deaf and blind. When she was little, she didn t know other people had feelings. Once she even pushed her baby sister Mildred out of her crib. Then she was assigned a teacher named Ann Sullivan. Ann taught Helen how to do sign language. Helen Keller was the first deaf and blind person to graduate collage. After college, she became an author. Helen Keller died on June 1, Helen lived a wonderful life. Sports by Patrick I love to do sports. My most favorite sport ever is soccer. I played football for four years straight. I only played soccer for two or three years, but I play soccer a lot at recess. I love basketball but my team didn t win a game yet. On my travel team for basketball I haven t lost yet. When I play baseball I am always catcher. Last year my team was named the Pirates and my team came in first place. I was also on a travel baseball team. My team color was red, but I forget my team name. This is my first year playing lacrosse. In soccer, I am mostly goalie. When I m at recess playing soccer I am on offense. In football, I am a safety on defense. On offense in football, I am a running back. In basketball on defense I am a guard. On offense I didn t make a shot yet, but I got a lot of assists. In travel basketball, I ve never made a basket but at least I got to pass the ball and dribble. Also, in baseball I never got a homerun but I still got to hold the ball. And in soccer, I only scored a few times but it was still fun. That s why I love sports. This is my first year playing lacrosse. In soccer I am mostly goalie in soccer. Christmas Time in New York by Ella Christmas time in New York is very busy. It is always crowded! Everybody is shoved together. They all want to see the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree. It is only put up around Christmas time. It is feet tall! It is decorated with a lot of colorful Christmas lights. At night from some hotels it looks beautiful! It is right in the middle of Rockefeller Center. The people who get to see it are very lucky!
P A G E 6 Duck Tape Creations by Julia Duck taping can be hard to do because it is pretty sticky. I am going to tell you about some Duck Tape crafts I am making for Mr. Hunt s class first I started with wallets, that s probably the easiest. Next I made a wallet into a bow Mario s by Luke which was easy because I just pinched Some creative Duck the middle together Tape items and then taped it so Julia has it would stay in that made pinch. Right now I am working on making flip flops. If you like the eagles and the color gold you will like these flip flops I m making. I have a lot of duck tape so if you want me to make some for you I will be glad to help. These are different kinds of duck tape. I have Elsa and Anna Olaf, checkered tie dye, and cowboys. I don t like the cowboys, I bought it because my uncle and my friends like the cowboys and said they would give me money if I made them a couple of things. Those are some of the Duck Tape creations I have made and have. I could make some for you one day. How does that sound? They have meals for kids and meals for adults. Mario s is a pizza place which has awesome pizza! I would recommend their mozzarella sticks too. Also you should get their specials. They have meals for kids and meals for adults. To get take out just call and they have specials for every day. They are located at 1510 Bay Avenue, Ocean City NJ. So next time your parents can t decide where to go or what to eat, tell them to go to Mario s! My Dog Chubbs by Dakota Chubbs was rescued from the humane society. Chubbs was a little dog in a big cage when we first got him. 10 minutes later Chubbs became the wildest dog in the world. 20 minutes later my parents wanted to change Chubbs name I said, No we are not changing Chubbs. Chipmunk Facts by Anna Chipmunks are amazing animals. If I were an animal I would be a chipmunk. There are 25 species of chipmunks. Their tails are 3-5 inches or 8-13 cm. Their life span is 2-3 years. Their weight is 1-5 ounces or grams. Their length is 4-7 inches or cm. A chipmunk s cheek can expand up to 3 times the size of its head.chipmunks like to explore. That s why I think chipmunks are cool.
The Big Injury by Brady One night on November 13 th 2014 at 5:00 PM my dad took me to wrestling practice. When I got there a lot of my friends were there. One hour later we were learning how to do take downs. When the kid tackled me my arm twisted on the ground and my dad heard me screaming and he wasn t happy at all. So my dad told the chief of police to give us a ride over to Shore Memorial. When I got to the hospital, they left me in a room for 2 hours, they must have been busy, but my arm still hurt a lot. They only gave me half the pain medicine. They said the next morning they were going to cut my arm open and put my bone in place. My dad said we did not want to wait that long, so my dad drove me to the Children s Hospital of Philadelphia. When I got there I fell asleep, but they asked me what color of cast I wanted, I was a little sleepy. They were going to give me blue, but I woke up the last minute to pick orange. They put me to sleep and they operated on me and put my bone in place. The next morning I got breakfast. I missed school on Friday November 14 th. My brother didn t go to school either, because he was at my Grandmother s house when I got home. He was with my Grandmother, and Grandpa. I was happy to see my Mom, Dad and brother,. I finally relaxed and watched a movie. That was a rough night! The Primary Express Team
