1 Berkshire Federation Of Young Farmers Clubs Newsletter Hi Everyone, News from your County Chairman We have a busy couple of months coming up with the Shefford Quiz evening this weekend and then their street dance evening that they have kindly opened up to everyone. We also have Newbury's jumble sale, club officer training and Bradfield s bingo night. We also have a full weekend on the 8 th / 9 th March at the South East Area competitions weekend. We have teams representing Berkshire in most of the competitions and even if you are not in a team but fancy coming to Sparsholt to support your fellow members please come along! Also out soon are the 2014 Country Fayre show classes, please keep an eye on our website where they will be available for you all to have a look at and decide which competitions you are keen to do Kate Field Officer s News It seems a bit odd to still be saying Happy New Year but this is our first newsletter of 2014, and it s a full one. Please have a good read of it and make the most of the opportunities offered within it. There are chances for you to part take in lots of activities, to meet and mix with fellow young farmers and to learn. I would like to thank Newbury Young Farmers for inviting me to their bowling meeting before Christmas and for making me feel very welcome. Ben Hiscock had however rigged the scoring machine! It was so nice to relax with you all and get to know your names and faces. I am looking forward to more opportunities to get to know the members. I have a busy time coming up this month and next so the office hours will differ slightly. (see calendar) I am always available on the phone and will deal with important s even when I am not in the office. 2 There is not much to report from Competitions as the Christmas New Year period is generally quiet. This will soon change, as per the to Clubs regarding the South East Area competitions weekend over the 8/9 th March at Sparsholt College. We have registered strong intentions to enter for a number of competitions and hope that all clubs and members will support our endeavours to put forward County teams. The up-coming practices and team get-togethers are as follows; RUSH HOCKEY; 17 yrs plus. A senior meeting/ session is being held at park House School Astro turf pitch on Friday 7th February from 7 til 8 pm. TAG-RUGBY; yr olds. A training session is being held for all of those interested at Stroud Green, Newbury (next to the Racecourse) on Saturday 8 th February at 11 am. MIXED DOUBLES BADMINTON; yr olds. We are not sure if there is enough interest to run a competition as originally planned for the 9th February and venues have become problematical. FIVE ASIDE INDOOR FOOTBALL; 16 and over INCLUDING ASSOCIATES. This is NOT an Area Eliminator but a competition being run to encourage more participation at the Spring Comps weekend. If you are interested in playing please let us know asap. CHOIR; Open. Shefford YFC and Katherine Bunn have formed/ are looking to form a choir to compete at the Area weekend. It will not be an exclusively Shefford outfit as they are looking to welcome anyone that fancies a go. Any/ all members interested in these competitions should contact Bridget Findlay at their earliest opportunity to register their interest. Let s try and get the best possible turn out for the County and as many members as possible accessing these opportunities. Please can all bring their membership cards to the training sessions. Thank You Bridget Findlay-Competitions Chair 2
3 Club Contacts Newbury: Andrew Findlay Bradfield: Simon Fernandez Reading: Declan Gillan Shefford: Sam Austin- Newbury 5/12/13 Thatcham lights. This is where we sold our wreaths and soaps which we made at our craft evening. All our members had a great evening selling these goods to the public raising money for our chosen charity Brake. 11/12/13 Chill out Evening We have had a really busy few months, so tonight we played games and just chilled out, it was great to chat and catch up with each other while having fun playing some games. 18/12/13 Bowling. This was our last meeting of 2013, we went bowling we seem to do a lot of bowling but we all enjoy it and had a great evening, Georgie came along and met all of our members. HAPPY NEW YEAR TO EVERYONE 8/1/14 The Art Of Speaking We did some public speaking practice. We played the shopping game Andrew was the last person and he remembered all what we had said well done Andrew, I think we were all impressed by this. We then spoke in turn about what we enjoyed doing outside of YFC this was interesting to find out what everyone did. 22/1/14 Art Evening We did drawing and colouring, we had a great evening which was very relaxed. Holly Findlay- Club Secretary 3

5 Shefford A warm welcome into the new year from Shefford young farmers and we all hope that you had an amazing Christmas. On the 18 th December we had our annual carol singing, this year it was held at Donald Browns house. It was a very enjoyable evening with lots of yummy treats for all us carol singers. On the 8 th January Shefford held a games evening to welcome us all into the new year. There was lots of fun and laughter, especially when Henry Graham and Sam Austin was playing twister. The next meeting Shefford held was at Brightwalton village hall on the 22th January, Where we had a bat talk. This was a very interesting meeting as some of found out that we didn t like bats that much. However we all had a very enjoyable meeting and learned lots of new facts about bats. We also got to see a range of different kind of bats as well, which was all very interesting. Natasha Chamberlain-Press Secretary 8/1/14 Reading Reading YFC started our 2014 at Basingstoke Bowl Plex with 3 mixed teams. Throughout the evening we found that most of the teams had a unique way of bowling with Kai Williams and Tommy Wise trying to put their own team members off! 22/1/14 Messy games night proved a thriller for all. With a club leader making sure there was no cheating going on each team had to bob for pears, then get 1 jelly baby out of a bucket of flour then had to get a gummy bear out of pineapple chunks, then get an after 8 mint of a tub of syrup. As you can imagine the teams were competitive and were not afraid to make a mess. Then the marshmallows came out and we had to see how many we could fit in out mouth. The chairman won this by fitting 60 something in! We have our programme in place for the year and are looking forward to welcoming the new comers. Abby Ledson-Club Secretary 5
6 Bradfield Happy New Year to you all from Bradfield YFC! Since the last newsletter the club has held a number of fun meetings. We started December by making some floral table decorations, providing the perfect centre piece for our Christmas dinner tables. This evening was enjoyed by all and even the boys got stuck in, proving that some of them were more artistic than the girls. Following this meeting we held a mini Christmas party/ messy games nights. Everyone enjoyed the games from musical chairs to jelly babies in syrup, rice crispies and maltesers in flour. It was a really good laugh and a meeting to remember! Following on from the Christmas break, we started the new year with a bang... And that was just club leader Mono falling over on the ice when we went ice skating at Bracknell. Some of the members had never been before and it was great to see their confidence on the ice grow throughout the evening, some even letting go of the side! We have also enjoyed a talk about YFC travel and the experiences it can bring and a sports evening, preparing ourselves for the upcoming sports competitions. Aside from our meetings, our committee are busy planning our Bingo and Buffet evening in March, this was a great event last year and we're really looking forward to it. Contact the club for ticket info! Bradfield s Bingo & Buffet Evening. Saturday the 22nd of March. Bradfield Social Club, from 7pm. Tickets 10, include games & buffet. Lots of prizes to be won!!! All ages welcome. Jessica Dewey- Club Secretary 6
