1 August Inside Edge Volume 178 August 2018 HELLO FELLOW CLUB MEMBERS: Happy National Summit Day! Can you believe it, it s here again already- time to break out the festive National Summit Day decorations and send out the usual National Summit day Cards! The festive atmosphere is everywhere! Little kids are alive with anticipation! What? You missed it? Well it fell on August 4 this year, and I have to confess, it slipped by me too, until I noticed it in an . And truth be told, I was a little fuzzy on the origin and traditions related to it also. So I went to the Oracle of All Knowledge, Google, and inquired. Let s see- National Whistleblowers Summit, hmmm, I don t think that s it. US Chamber of Commerce, Health Means Business National Healthcare Summit- No, I don t think that s it, either. Ah, here we go: Here at SKI and BACKPACKER magazine, we love the mountains in the summertime almost as much as we love them in the winter. We know we're not alone, which is why we thought you might be interested in joining us on National Summit Day August 4, 2018 to celebrate our favorite mountains and the people who climb them! OK, now that s a holiday I can get into! I wasn t quite sure what they had in mind doing to celebrate this new holiday, though, so I consulted a friend of mine who keeps up on these sort of things, Siri, to find out what she thinks. Siri, how do people generally celebrate National Summit Day and what are the favorite traditions? Siri said she had to think about that and then took me to the web site for National Summit on Educational Reform. I don t think I will be spending too many holidays with Sirithey sound too boring. Back on the SKI magazine web site, I found something a little more explanatory. On National Summit Day we recognize that throughout history and across cultures people have found different meaningful ways to relate to the mountains, the land, and outdoor spaces. We welcome everyone of every stripe, color, orientation, race, religion, identity, background and ability, to join us for National Summit Day. No matter what summit you choose, it s not about the fancy gear, or relating to the outdoors in any one particular way. It s about coming together to celebrate summits, real and metaphorical. Wow. Now that sounded like some pretty good advice. It could even be a good mission statement for the Modesto Ski Club. But wait a minute, metaphorical? I m supposed to celebrate a metaphorical summit? Some fat guy with a remote for a video game in his hand sitting on the couch says My metaphorical summit is going to the refrigerator! and I m supposed to celebrate that?? Whoa. I have enjoyed skiing and backpacking for a good part of my life, but I never thought of it in quite the grandiose terms of National Summit Day, but maybe there is something there. As ski cub members, maybe we should all endeavor to practice the ideals expressed for National Summit Day in everything we do. This summer, make sure you take some time out your busy schedule to go somewhere you can only reach wearing a backpack, out with Mother Nature, where you can really appreciate this beautiful world which we are so fortunate to inhabit. And while you are at it, say a prayer for our fellow citizens who will not be able to do that because they have had their lives so tragically interrupted by the raging wildfires in our state. Yours in skiing, Don Shaver, President theprez.modestoskiclub@gmail.com. 1
2 MODESTO SKI CLUB LODGE NEWS Greetings! Summer is well on its way for sure. The heat is up as well as so many wildfires here in California. Let s hope we get some relief soon from all the smoke in the valley. Roy and I were at the Lodge last weekend. We had both clear and smoky days, it just really depends the direction of the wind. Work Weekend is coming up next month. Please let me know if you are planning on attending Work Weekend via . It would really be nice to have those that have signed up just send a re-confirmation that they are planning on helping out at the Work Weekend. By helping out you receive a voucher for 1 night stay at the lodge. That voucher can be used for a Season or Year Key to the Lodge. Ask me about the details! The Lodge looks pretty good. Please be sure to turn off lights when you are not in the room or at the Lodge. Be sure to lock all windows and close all blinds and drapes when you leave for home. Do not leave perishable food in the refrigerators. Throw it away or take it home when you leave. Clean the lodge as if you would be the next guest to visit. My is mnighte@aol.com Home phone is Michelle Nightengale, Lodge Chairperson 2
3 Greetings MSC members, hope this newsletter finds you somewhere out of the valley escaping the unhealthy air. Hopefully the fires will soon be under control and the firefighters (THANK YOU!) can get a break. I have been out of town for the last couple of events and understand that everyone had a great time at the Wolinski BBQ and the LUAU hosted by the Sheldon s and Rob Orr. The next club event is the Hamre camping trip to Huntington Lake (8/15-8/19). After looking at the pictures and talking to Judy this seems like a nice place to get away to for the week, but, I ll be out of town! Bad timing on my part. Be sure to RSVP ASAP as the campground has limited amount of spaces. Speaking of RSVP s don t forget about the next BBQ 8/14. See Debra s flyer and come spend some quality time eating and sharing stories with your club members. Last but not least is the Activity Committee Meeting coming up in October. Start thinking about an event for next year that you would like to host or co-host. There is always plenty of member support these events so put your fun thinking caps on and bring some new ideas for all to share next year.
