Cemaes Voice Issue 34 December 2016 Top Class Cabin opens! On the 14th November 2016 at 10:30 in the morning Cylch Meithrin Cemaes new cabin was officially opened, and a year of hard work came to an end. Because the number of children in the primary school was increasing, the headmaster had to use the room that had traditionally been the Cylch s as an extra classroom. For a while it seemed that the Cylch would have to close, but Magnox offered a portable cabin as a new home together with the use of a crane to transport it to its place in the school grounds. The project was financed by grants and donations from companies, organisations, establishments, individuals and especially the parents of the community. The number of those who gave so generously is too large to list here, so the Cylch will be publishing a booklet where appropriate acknowledgement will be made. Because the cabin will be used by the public, it was necessary to go through the process of obtaining planning permission, and gain the approval of Building Regulations Department. The Cylch Committee is very grateful to the officials for their help in steering the project through this difficult process. On the 21st of November the relocation of the Cylch gained the approval of the CSSIW and therefore it could open its doors to children for the full two and a half hours for four days a week. The Cylch offers its thanks to the officers of the CSSIW for their help and advice. The community now has a an extremely useful resource now that includes a normal classroom (which could also be used for lectures etc) together with information technology facilities. It also has a sophisticated outside play area where children can play safely without fear of injury or fear of them straying. Sponsored by

Editorial Welcome to the December issue of Cemaes Voice which is full of interesting village news. Carys Davies has written a very poignant Village Treasures article about her much loved and sadly missed father Goronwy Jones, the Post. The recent Christmas Craft Fair in David Hughes village hall was a great success in bringing new people to the village to buy and sell very special gifts and cards. Everyone commented on the lovely atmosphere created. Let s hope it happens again in The new Christmas Lights will add much sparkle and delight to the 19th December Village Christmas event. Thanks to Cronfa Padrig for providing the funding and to Llanbadrig Community Council for their hard work in making it happen. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all our readers. 3 Village Venture The shop is now getting ready for Christmas with many stand holders already selling goodies and cards. There will be a special table just for Christmas with extra special items for sale. The Venture shop will be open on the evening of The Christmas Street Party on Monday December 19th. The coach trip to Chester was as ever, very successful and everyone enjoyed their outing and Christmas shopping. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all our stand holders and volunteers for making the Venture Shop such a highly successful enterprise and wish all our customers and friends a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Just to let you know that there are plans to close the shop in the New Year for renovations to the building. We hope it will not take too long! Charles Henry Ashley The historic lifeboat Charles Henry Ashley will be moving from Cemaes Harbour to her winter home at Peibron Farm in November as soon as suitable weather permits. Once there, volunteers from Cemaes Boat Club will be able to undertake the winter maintenance programme painting, anti-fouling, varnishing to make sure she looks her very best for the 2017 season. Next year, Charles Henry Ashley will be celebrating its 110th Birthday and we will be planning a series of special events in the village to mark this historic occasion. Also under discussion is another Adventure, which will be to sail and row the CHA to the Conwy River Festival. Check out and like our new Facebook Page (Cemaes Boat Club Charles Henry Ashley) to keep up with the latest news. We are always very keen to welcome new members - please contact Laura Downs ( ) if you are interested. Llanbadrig Church The stewards at Llanbadrig Church have stopped opening up for the winter months. A huge thank you to all those who spent time up there, opening up and talking to all the visitors; not sure how many visitors but certainly many names from all over the world are in the book. The churchyard has been looked after to best of anyone s ability but it is a huge task. Just recently though Mark Blackwell and his team of volunteers from DU Construction has been really helping in the churchyard, straightening grave stones and generally making the area safer for all who want to wander around. The Carols by Candlelight will be on Tuesday 20 th December at 6pm in Llanbadrig Church. All are welcome. CRONFA PADRIG TRUST The deadline for submission of applications for consideration in January 2017 is 26th December 2016 Please contact the Secretary, Marian Steele cronfapadrig@aol.com Phone:

Cemaes Community Group News Cemaes-in-Bloom The Cemaes in Bloom team have been putting the borders to bed with the help of Brian Vogel who has done most of the heavy pruning for us. He has also made the new troughs outside No 11 High Street. The window boxes in the High Street have been re planted with their winter colours but we are appalled that suddenly the local cats have found some troughs very inviting! Not nice. Is that because these cats are allowed to roam at night or that they have no fresh soil in their own homes! Pity that dog owners have to pick up but most cat owners have no idea where their cats foul! Mr Jones, the Treborth vet says it is a fallacy that cats need to go out at night. In fact dark coloured or black cats should definitely not be allowed out at night, they can t be seen and are more lightly to get hit by a car. In the early morning when these cats are hungry they will kill the song birds so really, cat owners, try to keep your beloved pets close to you. As all the heavy jobs have been taken care of by the team and Pauline and Helen have been working on the Beach Bed and Toilet slope, we are hoping to find others to help with the light duties, mainly opening and closing the poly tunnel and looking after the plants up there for one day a week. So if anyone has time we would very appreciate the extra pair of hands. Leave name and phone number in Venture Shop please. RNLI Cemaes Bay Fundraising Branch Our fundraising group had a most successful year with a Strawberry Tea, a saxophone concert, a fun dog show, Lifeboat Day and the Flower Produce and Craft Show. All these events raised a wonderful sum for the RNLI and we extend very many thanks to everyone who supported these event and we look forward to seeing you all again next year. Our remaining event for this year will be a Sherry and Mince Pie afternoon in the Stag Inn on Saturday, 10 December, from 12 noon to 2pm, when we shall be having a grand Christmas Hamper raffle and Tombola, so do come along and have an enjoyable time. Cemaes Carnival Committee A meeting was held at The Stag on the 18th October to elect the New Committee positions which are: Chairman: Steve Bray Vice Chairman: Jack Longman. Secretary: Linda Bray Treasurer: Irina Longman The meeting was well attended with representatives from Llanbadrig Community Council and Cemaes Heritage adding their welcomed support. We held a Raffle in The Stag on their Swing Band Night and with terrific support from Keith, his Staff and everyone who took the trouble to put their hands in their pockets and purses to show their support we raised 145. towards the 2017 Cemaes Carnival. On behalf of everyone involved we would like to say thanks, it's very much appreciated. Clwb Padrig On 11th October we welcomed Hayley Wood of the Alzheimer Society who gave a talk detailing all the different ways dementia affects people. She also showed the best way to deal with friends or family who are affected in order to make their lives more enjoyable. Her talk gave us all plenty o think about and for some of us to implement. Our first meeting in the New Year will be on 10 January when we shall have a talk and discussion by Helen Harris on refugee relief Ynys Môn. Our programme for the coming season is not quite complete, but please look for the posters in the village to find out what is going to be held. The holiday for the Clwb Padrig Group has been arranged for a visit to Loch Lomond, for 5 days departing on 21 November Next year s events will be displayed on the notice boards in the village, so please keep looking out as we hope to have more enjoyable events again in 2017.

Horizon Nuclear Power News Wylfa Newydd update winter 2016 With on-site work at Wylfa Newydd winding down for the Christmas period, we d like to take this opportunity to update everyone on some of the things that have been happening on the Project recently. First, I d first like to say a big thank you to everyone who took time to visit one of our Stage Two Pre Application Consultation - or PAC2 events this autumn, and give us their feedback on our updated proposals for the Project. Being our last consultation on the Project as a whole, this was a really significant milestone for us. Our team is now busy analysing all of the comments we received to make sure they re considered before we submit our Development Consent Order application for Wylfa Newydd to the UK government next year. Since our last update, there s been lots of activity on-site too. We ve been continuing our initial work to prepare the site for construction. This included archaeological work around site and on Wylfa Head, ongoing environmental surveys and lighting studies. All of this is really important to help us understand in detail the conditions of the whole site and surrounding areas. As many people living nearby will know, in addition to PAC2 we also held a second round of consultation in October and November specifically for an upcoming planning application to Anglesey Council for Site Preparation and Clearance. This details the work we intend to carry out next year to fully prepare the site for the construction phase in around two years time, and it details our plans for all aspects of this stage of work, including the stripping and storage of topsoil. All the documents for this can still be viewed on our website. Again, we d like to say a big thank you to everyone who took the time to visit our events in Tregele and Cemaes, and took the time to give us their feedback on the plans. Some of you may have noticed the off-shore drilling rigs at Porth-y-pistyll during August. They were investigating the off-shore geological conditions around the area where we re proposing to build our cooling water intake structure and a Marine Off- Loading Facility. To help people understand this aspect of work, we ve produced a short film which has some great shots of the equipment we use and how it works, and is well worth watching. It s available on our YouTube channel search for Horizon Nuclear Power. Porth-y-Pistyll drilling As well as all of this, we ve been continuing our support for local community organisations, including Cylch Meithrin Cemaes. We re delighted to have donated 5,000 to help the group complete its new classroom in Cemaes Primary School. The Cylch Meithrin provides a really important start for children aged two and over across Wales through play, and in the medium of Welsh. 7 Rose s Oak Tree Earlier this year, Llanbadrig Community Council asked if we could help fix a flooding problem at the Bethesda Chapel cemetery. We were very happy to help out, and in partnership with both Llanbadrig and Anglesey Councils, our team led by Site Manager Daron Hodges, was able to fix the drainage issues which had caused the flooding. We re really pleased to say the problem has now been resolved. Bethesda Chapel Drainage Now that our PAC2 consultation has closed, I d like to remind you that we restarted our monthly Open Surgeries in November, and our first surgery of 2017 will be at the village hall in Cemaes on Monday 16 January from 1.00pm until 7.00pm. Please call in and meet our team you don t need to book an appointment. We start every year saying it will be busier than the last, and as our Project prepares to step up a gear, 2017 will see further visible progress on the Project. Site Preparation & Clearance works are scheduled to start next Spring, and the A5025 improvements will also be getting underway next year both being subject to us receiving planning consent, of course. As always, if you have any questions or would like any information about the Wylfa Newydd Project, you can visit an Open Surgery or contact us at any time by calling our Freephone number on , ing us at wylfaenquiries@horizonnuclearpower.com, or visiting our website; From us all at Horizon, we hope you enjoy a very Merry Christmas and our best wishes for a Happy New Year. Richard Foxhall Stakeholder Relations Manager Horizon Nuclear Power Rose Griffiths, retired chairman of Cemaes Bay Carnival and past member of the Llanbadrig Community Council was the instigator of getting Cemaes Bay Playing Field adopted by The Fields in Trust thereby making sure the Playing Field would be protected as a green space and never to be built upon. This was granted in the Queen Elizabeth s Jubilee year of Rhodri Edwards, Fields in Trust Wales Development Manager presented Rose with an oak tree which was grown from an acorn on the Queen s estate. The tree has been sitting in a plant pot in Rose s garden but she feels now is the time to plant it in it s rightful place, Cemaes Bay Playing Field. There is a plaque commemorating the adoption event and handing over the tree at the entrance to the Playing Field close to the Library Steps. There are only two other places on Anglesey, which have been granted this status, Holyhead and Beaumaris. Rhodri Edwards has been working to ensure everyone in Wales has access to recreational open space since He is also a judge for the Green Flag Award the benchmark national standard for parks and green spaces in the UK. It is hoped that he could be present when the tree is planted but a lot of thought will have to go into choosing the right site and protection for this precious tree before the planting Y Wygyr Fish & Chip Shop & Licensed Restaurant 9 High Street, Cemaes Bay Telephone orders welcome MAKE A MEAL OF IT Wine & Dine here THE FIRST 5 FISH & CHIP SHOP IN WALES

Steve s Wildlife Report Exciting news from the RSPB broke recently regarding Bitterns breeding on Anglesey for the first time since Birds had been doing their "booming" display call at Valley Wetlands this spring, where they last bred in 1984 but two newly fledged juveniles were seen at Malltraeth Marsh RSPB reserve in the late summer. Also two Purple Herons and a Great White Egret added to the rare herons on show at that time. On the 2nd November I had 4 Lapland buntings near South Stack, 4 Greenland White-fronted Geese at Llyn Llewennan and a ringed Black headed Gull from Arnheim in Holland at Penrhos. An exotic looking Hoopoe was at Conwy RSPB reserve at the end of October but sadly was taken by a Peregrine. Up to two Kingfishers showed well in Cemaes in October, occasionally giving really good views. On the 24th October a Siberian Yellow browed Warbler was calling in Pauline's Garden in the Cemaes Valley. A few had previously been in Wylfa Car Park and Tony White had one briefly in his Tregele Kingfisher garden. Martin Jones had a Firecrest in The Valley on the 22nd October. A beautiful Pallas's Warbler was at Holyhead Breakwater Country Park on the 16th October plus 3 Ring Ouzels. A Red Flanked Bluetail was on the Great Orme on the 11th October which is a very rare bird in north Wales. I had a good count of 19 Lapland Buntings on the Range at South Stack on the 8th October. However an adult bird feeding two apparent full grown young was a really interesting record, showing these birds from the Arctic circle had migrated south as a family party. Siberian Accentor Our roulette-wheel of changing weather patterns threw up a three week period of persistent easterly winds this Autumn, peppering the east coast of Britain with birds of Eastern Promise. Siberian Accentor (like a Dunnock with a go-faster stripe) had never been recorded in Britain before. This Autumn there were twelve in the UK, and in Europe instead of the odd singleton every few years, this Autumn produced over 220! Although some of these eastern species filtered through to North Wales, the East Coast was the place to be! I popped over a few times and caught up with Siberian Accentor, Red flanked Bluetail, Red breasted Flycatcher, Barred Warbler, Bluethroat, Siberian Stonechat, Dusky, Pallas's and Yellow browed Warblers, Tundra Bean Geese, Olive backed Pipit, Eastern Black Redstart, Daurian Shrike, Shorelarks plus thousands of commoner migrants. Recently I called my son Rhys to come and see the Super moon as it broke through the clouds. He replied "I've already seen it, it's not that impressive!" He may have had a point. However the Super moon did result in very high tides so I headed over to Parkgate on the River Dee to see a spectacle of thousands of birds, including Hen and Marsh Harriers, Bittern and 100's of Egrets. Thousands of small voles, mice and shrews were escaping the advancing high tide only to become an alternative source of food for the hungry Birds of Prey, Gulls and Herons. It was rodent-icide on a grand scale but a wildlife spectacle to behold! I was chuffed that I had my first local Red Squirrel at Wylfa Woods Car Park on the 23rd September but I suppose the rarest animal locally was the Sea-Turtle washed up on the Menai Straight near Anglesey Sea Zoo. Identified as an Olive Ridley Turtle from the tropical waters of Mexico and the Southern United States, this is the first record of this Species ever recorded in British waters. What a find! Merry Christmas to all the readers and please let me know if you see anything unusual. Eyes peeled for Waxwings on your berry bushes as it's an invasion year and they're on their way (hopefully)! All the best Steve Culley ( or SteCul10@aol.com) Pallas s Warbler Waxwing

Cemaes Primary School Each year the school holds a Thanksgiving Service to give thanks for the year s bounty, and each year the parents contribute food items so that the school can distribute them to worthy causes. This year it was decided to share the food between Brwynog Home, Amlwch, and The Lighthouse, Holyhead. As usual a contingent of children went to Brwynog with the donation, and the photograph shows Alan Blankley, Lliwen Owen Williams, Rhys Culley and Leah Jones enjoying the company of some of the residents. Heritage Plaques Cemaes has recently seen the installation of two new slate plaques marking special sites. Most visitors will have seen the one on the sea front marking St Patrick's Bell. The Time and Tide Bell in Cemaes is part of a larger artwork consisting of similar bells situated in coastal location around Britain and designed by artist Marcus Vergette. They are positioned to ring at high tide and to mark the daily rhythms of the tides as well as to be marker for sea level rises in the future. The other plaque is well worth seeking out and is found at the entrance to the tunnel where the Wygyr footpath passes under the road. It serves as a reminder that the Cemaes valley area, together with the brickworks and the old railway track was gifted to the village by CW Grove-White of Brynddu exactly 40 years ago. We re very grateful to the two Costain contractors from Wylfa who installed the plaques. The delivery to the Lighthouse was organised by member of staff Mrs Gail Sutherland who takes a special interest in the work done there. Harbour Management Committee The Harbour Management Committee has provided a haven for commercial and leisure craft since at least the early 18th Century - in many senses it is the heart of Cemaes Village. The Harbour Management Team is licensed by Llanbadrig Community Council to manage the harbour and maintain the pier, slipways and mooring chains. The Harbour team is appointed by the Community Council. We are looking for volunteers to join our team. As a member of the team you will be expected to attend monthly meetings and help with occasional maintenance ie painting and replacing chains. If you are interested in joining us please contact: Roger Dobson (Secretary) rogerdobson@btinternet.com Happy Christmas To all our readers There is some uncertainty as to the future of Cemaes Voice in 2017 due to dwindling advertising income and the high production costs. Cwmni Cemaes Cyf will announce future plans as soon as we can. David Livingstone (Chair) livilob@btinternet.com

Trysorau r Pentref Village Treasures Goronwy Jones y/the Post Wrth ddarllen yr erthygl yn rhifyn diwethaf o r Llais am Cwmni Cemaes yn dathlu 20fed penblwydd, a gweld llun dad, rwyf wedi cael fy sbarduno i roi ychydig o eiriau ar bapur am dad a mam, gan fod dad yn un o Gyfarwyddwyr cyntaf Cwmni Cemaes Cyf. Fe ddaeth Goronwy Jôs y Post, fel yr oedd yn cael ei adnabod yn y pentref, a mam, sef Alma, yma i Gemaes i fyw yn syth ar ôl priodi yn Awst Mentrodd y ddau i brynu Swyddfa r Post gan Mr Ivor Morris (brawd O.R. Morris y ffotograffydd) a leolwyd yn 25 Stryd Fawr pryd hynny, lle mae K&J Direct yn awr. Yn Longae Amlwch y ganwyd dad, Goronwy Owen Jones, yn 1922, ac fel Owen Longae yr oedd yn cael ei adnabod gan ei deulu ac yn lleol, ond pan aeth i r ysgol uwchradd yn Llangefni, fel Goronwy yr oedd yn cael ei adnabod. Gan mai yn fan honno y cyfarfodd mam ef yna Goronwy oedd hi yn ei alw. Pan oeddwn yn blentyn roeddwn methu a deall pam oedd na Yncl Gron ac Yncl Owen yn yr un tŷ! In reading the article in the last edition of Cemaes Voice about Cwmni Cemaes 20 th birthday, and seeing a picture of Dad, I have decided to write down a few words about dad and mum, as dad was one of the original Directors of Cwmni Cemaes Cyf. Goronwy Jones the Post, as he was known in the village, and mum, Alma, came to live in Cemaes in August 1950 straight after they were married. They took on the venture of buying the Post Office from Mr Ivor Morris (brother of O.R. Morris the photographer). The Post Office was situated at 25 High Street, where K & J Direct are situated now. Dad, Goronwy Owen Jones, was born in Longae Amlwch in 1922, and he was known by his family and locally as Owen Longae. However, when he went to the secondary school in Llangefni, he was known as Goronwy. As mum met him there she of course called him Goronwy. When I was a small child I couldn t understand why there was an Uncle Owen and Uncle Goronwy living in the same house! Mum was born in Menai Bridge in 1925, then lived in Hyfrydle, Moelfre from when she was 9 years old. Her father owned the bakery in Moelfre so mum had experience of what it was like to run a business. Dad had experience of working in the Post Office as he had worked for Uncle Morris before the war. Dad yn y fyddin 1942 Dad in the Army 1942 Diwrnod priodas Mam a Dad - Mum & Dad s wedding day Diwrnod fy medydd My Christening Day Dad a fi gyda Mr & Mrs Morris Dad and I with Mr & Mrs Morris Yn Borth y ganwyd mam yn 1925, ond roedd wedi byw yn Hyfrydle, Moelfre ers pan yn naw oed. Taid oedd perchenog y Becws yn Moelfre, ac felly yr oedd gan mam syniad o beth oedd oblygiadau rhedeg busnes eich hunain. Yr oedd dad a profiad o r busnes gan ei fod wedi gweithio i Yncl Morris rhwng gadael ysgol a mynd i r rhyfel yn Yn ystod y rhyfel yr oedd dad yn weithredwr radio gyda r Royal Corps of Signals, yn gyntaf yn y frwydyr am Tiwnisia yng Ngogledd Affrica, ac yna gyda r 8fed Fyddin yn Sicily a r Eidal. Ni fyddai yn sôn llawer am yr During the war dad was a wireless operator with the Royal Corps of Signals, firstly in the battle for Tunisia in North Africa, then with the 8 th Army in Sicily and Italy. He didn t talk much about this period but he was able to recall his army number to the end. After coming home from the war in 1947 he worked in the Post Office in Bangor and then Bethesda before coming to Cemaes. His day began at 5.30 in the morning as he had to open to receive the post, then the local postmen came in to help sort the mail before going out to distribute it. My memory is of the kettle always boiling in the morning it

adeg honno ond yr oedd yn cofio ei rif milwrol hyd y diwedd. Ar ôl dod adref o r Rhyfel yn 1947 bu yn gweithio yn y Swyddfa Post ym Mangor, ac yna Bethesda cyn dod i Gemaes. Yr oedd ei ddiwrnod yn dechrau am 5.30 y bore er mwyn derbyn y post, a byddai r postmyn lleol yn dod i mewn i w sortio cyn mynd i w ddosbarthu. Fy nghôf i yw y byddai r tecell pob amser ymlaen yn y boreau yn wir dyna oedd tasg cyntaf y dydd. Ar ôl cau am y diwrnod, byddai angen balansio y llyfrau pob peth pryd hynny ar bapur, ac adio yn eich pen dim cyfrifianell. Yr oedd Dad yn fathemategwr gwych byddwn wrth fy modd yn ei wylio yn adio rhifau i fyny. Yr hen sustem o /s/d oedd pryd hynny, a byddai dad yn cyfri y tri colofn i fyny ar yr un pryd. Pan oedd Wylfa yn cael ei adeiladu yn y 60au, cymerodd dad y swydd o redeg Swyddfa yno ar rhai nosweithiau er mwyn y gweithwyr. Tipyn yn wahanol i swyddfa Cemaes! Yr oedd nos Iau, sef noson cyflog yn brysur dros ben. Dim bancio ar-lein na chardiau debit a credit pryd hynny. Yr oedd y gweithwyr yn dod ac arian parod i mewn i w drosglwyddo i w gwragedd trwy Money Orders. Gan nad oedd ffasiwn beth a Securicor, golygai hyn y byddai dad yn dod adref hefo tomen o arian yn y car, ac yna cysgu hefo r arian o dan y gwely. Mae r procer mawr brass oedd gan mam wrth ochor y gwely dal gennym ni! Yn 1963 prynodd dad a mam y tyddyn drws nesa i r Swyddfa Bost a symudodd y busnes i fan honno, ac fe aethom ni i fyw i r Gilfach. Yr oedd y giat yn y ffens gefn yn handi dros ben i fynd yn ôl ac ymlaen. Was the first task of the day! After closing at the end of the day, it was time to balance the books. Everything was written on paper and it all had to be added mentally no calculators. Dad was brilliant at adding up I used to love watching him. It was the old /s/d system which was far more complicated than today dad didn t count one column at a time but all three together. When Wylfa was being built in the 1960 s dad took on the role of running the Post Office on the camp in the evening for the workers. Quite different to the Cemaes office. Thursday night, which was pay day, was exceptionally busy. No on-line banking or credit/debit cards at that time. The workers came in with cash to transfer by money order to their families. This meant that dad travelled back to Cemaes with a load of cash in the car and then he slept with it under the bed until it was collected the next morning. We still have the big brass poker that mum had by the side of the bed!! In 1963 dad and mum bought the cottage next door to the Post Office and moved the business there and we went to live in Y Gilfach in Ffordd y Wylan. The door in the fence in the back garden was very handy to go back and forth. Dad was a People Person he loved to have a chat with everyone. The Post Office was a busy, exciting place with lots of laughter going on. Dad soon became immersed in community life and over the years he was a member of various committees. Dyn Pobl oedd dad wrth ei fodd yn cael sgwrs a r hwn a r llall. Yr oedd y Post yn le byrlymus, cyffrous a hefyd llawer o chwerthin yn mynd ymlaen. Buan y daeth dad yn weithgar yn y Gymuned. Dros y blynyddoedd bu yn aelod o nifer o wahanol bwyllgorau. Yr oedd yn aelod o r Cyngor Plwyf ac ar ddiwedd y 60au dewisiwyd ef i gynrychioli Plwyf Llanbadrig ar Cyngor Dosbarth Gwledig Twrcelyn, ac yna ar Gyngor Bwrdeisdref Ynys Môn, pan ffurfiwyd yn Teimlai dad ei fod yn fraint cael y cyfle i helpu pobl. Mam druan oedd yn gorfod edrych ar ôl y busnes pan ddiflanai dad i r cyfarfodydd!! Gan mai swydd gwirfoddol oedd cynrychioli pryd hynny, ni allai dad fforddio i gyflogi person arall. Cyngor Plwyf Llanbadrig 1987 Dad was on the Parish Council, and at the end of the 1960 s he represented Llanbadrig Parish on Twrcelyn Rural District Council and then on Anglesey Borough Council when it was formed in Dad thought it was a privilege to have the chance to help people. Poor mum was left to run the business when dad disappeared to various meetings! As being a Councillor was a voluntary job at that time they couldn t afford to pay anyone else.

Yn yr 80au, dad oedd Cadeirydd y Pwyllgor a gododd yr holl arian i adeiladu y Clwb Snwcer yn awr y Clwb Ffitrwydd. Nid oedd yn dasg hawdd ac yr oedd yn ddiwrnod i w gofio pan y cafodd ei agor yn swyddogol, gan fod y pwyllgor yn ymfalchio eu bod yn gadael etifeddiaeth i r dyfodol. Ymgymerodd dad a llawer o wahanol ddyletswyddau yn y pentref cyflwynydd mewn cyngherddau a pan yn dewis Brenhines Carnifal, ocsiwniwr i r Clwb Pel Droed, MC mewn gyfarfaoedd Whist ayb. Dyna pryd oedd dad hapusaf wrth ei fodd bod yng nghanol y petha. Hefyd yr oedd diwrnod y Carnifal yn un pwysig ar y calendar trafod am wythnosau beth oedd y wisg i fod, a mam yn brysur yn gwnio! In the 1980 s dad was the chairman of the committee that was set up to build a new snooker hall now the fitness club. It was not an easy task raising that much money and it was a day to remember when it was officially opened as all the committee felt that they were leaving a legacy for the future. Dad undertook various duties in the community compere in concerts and when choosing a Carnival Queen, auctioneer to raise funds for the football club, MC in Whist Drives etc. Dad was at his happiest when involved in village life. Carnival day was an important village event discussions went on for weeks running up to it what to dress up as and then mum was busy with the sewing machine! Diwrnod agor y Clwb Snwcer - Opening the Snooker Hall - Dad a/and Miss Jones, Bod Eryl Dad a/and Anti Nan (Siop yr Iard) yn y/in the Carnifal Aelodau Clwb Padrig ar wyliau yn Eastbourne yn 2000 Clwb Padrig members on holiday in Eastbourne in 2000 Un o r diddordebau a rannai mam a dad oedd canu yr oedd dad yn canu yn Parti Wygyr a bu mam yn cyfeilio iddynt am rhai blynyddoedd. Yr oeddent yn ymarfer yn y tŷ yn aml. Yr oedd ffydd mam a dad yn bwysig iawn iddyn nhw, y ddau yn aelodau yng Nghapel Bethesda. Am rhai blynyddoedd bu mam yn chwarae r organ gyda Anti Mair, a dad yn codi canu. Yna yn 1964 cafodd dad y fraint o i ddewis yn flaenor ac yna yn drysorydd y Capel. Fe ddaeth yn ffrindiau a r Parchedig Emlyn Richards cyfellgarwch a barhaodd dros y blynydddoedd ac un a drysora dad hyd y diwedd. Trefnodd dad a mam daith arbennig i Israel i Mr Richards ar ei ymddeoliad, un fythgofiadwy. Rhoddodd hyn y syniad iddynt i drefnu gwyliau i Glwb Padrig pan oedd dad yn Gadeirydd, ac mae r Clwb Gwyliau yn dal i barhau. Emlyn Richards a/and Dad Yr oedd mam hefyd yn aelod o wahanol fudiadau yr oedd yr NSPCC yn agos iawn i w chalon ac yr oedd yn drysorydd clwb Nadolig y W.I. One of the interests that mum and dad shared was singing. Dad sang as a member of Parti Wygyr and mum was their accompanist for a number of years. They were often practicing in the house. Mum and Dad s faith was very important to them. They were both members of Bethesda Chapel. For a number of years mum played the organ with Aunty Mair, and dad used to lead the singing. In 1964 dad was given the honour of being elected as a deacon and then became the chapel treasurer. He became great friends with the Rev Emlyn Richards a friendship which lasted over the years and one which dad treasured to the end. Mum and dad arranged a trip to the Holy Land on Mr Richards retirement, which was very special. This planted a seed in their minds and mum and dad then arranged various holidays for the members of Clwb Padrig, when dad was the Chairman, and the holiday club is still thriving. Mum was also a member of various societies - the NSPCC was very close to her heart and she was the

Yr oedd pel droed yn rhan fawr o fywyd dad. Yn chwaraewr dawnus pan yn ifanc, enillodd llawer o gwpanau gyda clwb pêl droed Amlwch. Yn wir cafodd y cynnig i fynd am dreialon i Everton ar ôl y rhyfel ond ni ddilynodd y cynnig i fyny. Un o r pethau oedd yn falch ohono oedd y ffaith ei fod wedi chwarae yn yr un tim a Syr Stanley Matthews pan yn y fyddin. Cafodd llawer o bleser ar ôl ymddeol o fynd gyda criw o i ffrindiau i fyny i wylio tim Cemaes yn chwarae, pob un a fflasg yn ei boced! Trafod mawr wedyn! Un o r digwyddiadu byth gofiadwy i dad oedd gael ei gyflwyno a thystysgrif gan John Charles, mewn Noson o Ddathlu, am ei wasanaeth i pêl droed Cymru. Parhaodd pêl droed yn bwysig ym mywyd dad hyd y diwedd gan ei fod ef a mam yn rhannu y diddordeb gyda u wyrion. Roedd rhaid i r hogia gael mynd i ty nain a taid i wylio gêm dim yr un fath adra! Hefyd cael eu difetha - llond bwrdd o fwyd! Yr oedd yna berthynas arbennig iawn rhwng yr hogia a u nain a taid un fydd yr hogia yn ei drysori am byth. Cafodd mam a dad bron i 60 o flynyddoedd hapus gyda i gilydd. Wrth gwrs yr oedd yna amseroedd anodd yn enwedig pan oedd un neu r llall yn dioddef o afiechyd a pan gollodd mam ei golwg, ond yr oedd y ddau yn deall eu gilydd i r dim yn gweithio fel tîm ac yn gefn i r naill a r llall. Yn wir roedd dad ar goll pan fu farw mam. Hi oedd yn cadw trefn tu ol i r llenni yn gefn i dad - hebddi hi fuasai dad ddim wedi gallu cyflawni yr hyn a wnaeth. Wrth ysgrifennu hwn mae llawer o emosiynau wedi dod i r wyneb - ambell i wên, elfen o hiraeth, deigryn neu ddau ond hefyd teimlad o falchder. Balchder yn yr hun a gyfranodd y ddau i Gemaes, a balchder fy mod wedi cael y fraint o gael nhw fel rhieni. Carys treasurer of the W.I. savings club. Football played a big part in dad s life. He was a talented football player when he was young and won many trophies with Amlwch town football club. He had the offer of going for trials to Everton after the war but he didn t follow this up. His other claim to fame was the fact that he played in the same football team as the great Sir Stanley Matthews whilst in the army. After retiring he used to go with a group of friends on a Saturday afternoon to the School Lane to watch Cemaes play, each one of them with a flask in their pocket! One of dad s proudest moments was being presented with a certificate by John Charles during a Presentation Evening for his services to football in North Wales. Football continued to be important in later life for my parents as they shared the interest with their grandsons. The boys insisted that they had to go and watch a match in Nain and Taid s it wasn t the same at home! Of course there was always a feast awaiting them as well! There was a special relationship between the boys and their grandparents - one the boys will never forget. Dad and mam had nearly 60 happy years together. Of course there were difficult times especially when ill health hit them both and when mum lost her sight. However they understood each other worked as a team and always supported each other. Dad was at a complete loss when mum passed away. She was the organiser behind the scene always supporting dad enabling him to achieve what he did. In writing this I have experienced various emotions a few smiles, a sense of longing, one or two tears but also a feeling of pride. Pride in all that they contributed to the village and the community and also proud that I had the honour of having them as my parents. 14 Cwmni Cemaes Cyf Recently, I have taken over from Michelle Humphreys as the chairperson of Cwmni Cemaes, when she decided to step down although she is still involved with the company. Michelle was the instigator and project manager for the renovation of the Heritage Centre, which was not an easy task and we thank her for all the effort and time she has put in over the last few years into transforming the building. There are many positive comments in the visitor s book from people from near and far. There have been visitors from as far afield as USA, Canada, Germany and Switzerland this summer and all were impressed with the Centre and the surrounding area. One of the most enjoyable parts of volunteering in the Centre is having the opportunity to chat with people who visit. The group of ladies who meet in the Heritage Centre on a Monday evening have been busy over the last couple of months. Firstly, it was decided to raise money for the British Legion by knitting poppies. They approached Mr Piers Beeland, who is an official British Legion volunteer, for his approval and he was very supportive. We had a variety of knitted and crocheted poppies, and one of us even took wool on holiday and made 70 poppies in Rhodes well travelled poppies!!! Mr Beeland came along last week to empty the boxes and count the money that has been collected thus far and the total was 860 with some still to come in. Thank you ladies for all your hard work for such a worthy cause. The AGM of Cwmni Cemaes Cyf will be held at the Heritage Centre on Tuesday December 6 th at 7.30 pm. Please come along to hear what is going on and it is an opportunity for you to give us some ideas of what events you would like to see there in the future. It is a village enterprise and we would appreciate any input. We are always pleased to welcome new members and volunteers. Meanwhile, on behalf of Cwmni Cemaes Cyf I hope you all have a lovely Christmas and all the best for Carys A gem of a book A richly illustrated bilingual book documenting the remarkable collection of sixteenth century stained glass at St Gwenllwyfo Church, Dulas, Anglesey has been published with the help of a 1,000 grant from the Magnox socio-economic scheme at Wylfa power station. Then last week a Christmas Craft and Food Fair was held at the Village Hall. A big thank you goes to all those who arranged it, especially Helena and Tracey, and to those who worked hard during the day to make it such a success. All of the 18 stall holders praised the event and stated that they would love to return again. There was a wide variety of high quality goods for sale. Thank you to all who supported the event. A total of 650 was raised towards the Heritage Centre. The 72 page book is a fitting tribute to Churchwarden John Owen Hughes and his wife Catherine Fleming Hughes who spent many years researching the origins and history of the Flemish stained glass. They were both former teachers at Ysgol Syr Thomas Jones School, Amlwch and much respected members of the Church of St. Gwenllwyfo. The listed church attracts visitors all year round to see the second largest collection of Louvain glass in the

Avril Lloyd, Friends of St Gwenllwyfo Church Secretary commented: It is wonderful to present this book at last. It was a huge privilege to bring it to fruition and we are very grateful to Magnox for their generous support. The book costs 10 and can be purchased from the Church and Sulien Books. All proceeds will contribute to the listed churches annual running costs.
