The oldest fossil fungi are at least 545 million years old. The word fungus is a Latin word meaning mushroom. Did you know that some fungi can glow in the dark? Other types of fungi have been used to cure diseases. Hawk Talk Prairie View Elementary M A R C H Teacher Spotlight: Courtney Baker G.A.T.E.S. Teacher by: Jayla Adams N E W S Mrs. Baker is the G.A.T.E.S. teacher here at Prairie View. She has two children and a dog named Sophie. The most influential person in her life is her mom. Mrs. Baker s hidden talent is that she used to play the saxophone in the band at A & M. Her best memory from school is meeting friends. She switched from being a math teacher to being a G.A.T.E.S teacher because she didn t want to say goodbye to her students after one year and she wanted to work with different grades. Her biggest pet peeve is people being late. Mrs. Baker s hobbies are visiting College Station, going to watch A & M football games, and traveling. Her dream vacation is Europe and her favorite food is sweets. Her favorite accomplishment this year is getting a grant. Mrs. Baker enjoys access to Chromebooks since they have more resources, but she thinks some students get easily distracted by them. Mrs. Baker believes the worst part about being a teacher is that students leave. She also thinks the best part of teaching is making a difference. Her favorite habit is Put first things first. Thank you, Mrs. Baker, for being a great G.A.T.E.S. teacher here on the Prairie!

2 Spring Training By Landon Culwell Spring training is underway for the 2018 MLB season. Most teams train in Arizona or Florida in the warm sunshine. The first team to ever start spring training in Florida was the Washington Senators. Pitchers and catchers reported to spring training on February 13th and position players reported February 18th. Players are being traded so teams can be rebuilt, rosters are getting finalized, and games are now being played. Did you know spring training games can end in a tie? Who will you be rooting for in the 2018 MLB season? I know who I am going for. GO, RANGERS!! The No Bake Cheesecake Easy Recipes By Jayla Adams Pie crust (7-9 in. wide) 2 Tablespoons lemon juice 8 ounces cream cheese 1/3 cup white sugar 1/2 cup heaving whipping cream, whipped Sliced strawberries or other fruit (optional) First, you will need to let the cream cheese soften. After about 10 minutes, beat cream cheese, 1/3 cup sugar, and lemon juice in a bowl. Whip cream and fold into cream cheese mixture. Spread into pie crust and top with fruit (optional.) Freeze for about an hour, covered with foil. Enjoy!

3 Rain, Rain, Go Away By: Jonathan Dodt Is this Seattle or Rhome, Texas? Seattle is known to have rain every single day...and lately that is how it feels here at school. Does the sun even exist anymore? We have not had outdoor recess in a while. Do you miss going outside? I know I definitely do!!! Why is it raining so much? I think it may have something to do with the water cycle, but I think we can all agree it can stop now. Did you know Oahu, Hawaii, saw 331 days of terrible rain!! That is the most ever recorded. Maybe I should move to Hawaii and sell umbrellas!?! I hope this rain passes quickly so we can finally play outside!!!!!! I wonder if the sun is on vacation.spring Break is around the corner. Student Spotlight By Rosie Lara Mason Fritz Mason Fritz is in 5th grade; his teacher is Mrs. Wilkins. He was born in Dallas, Texas. His hobbies are playing football and video games. Mason s favorite thing about Prairie View is the chromebooks. When Mason grows up, he wants to be a NFL football player. Mason has 2 brothers and 1 sister.

4 Science Facts Did you know African American African American Science History Science History By: Vicki Limo George Robert Carruthers - An inventor, physicist and space scientist. He created an ultraviolet camera or spectrograph which was used by NASA in the 1972 Apollo 16 flight. George Washington Carver - was an American botanist and inventor. He actively promoted alternative crops to cotton and methods to prevent soil depletion. Mary Jackson - A mathematician and aerospace engineer, who was the first black female engineer for NASA. Mae Carol Jemison - An engineer, physician and NASA astronaut. She became the first black woman to travel into space aboard the space shuttle Endeavour on Sept 12, 1992.

6 The Greatest Showman on Earth A movie review, by: Addyson Cook The film is inspired by the story of P. T. Barnum's creation of the Barnum & Bailey Circus and the lives of its star attractions. Mr. Barnum worked at a shipping company until he lost his job as a clerk when the company wentbankrupt. Taking a risky bet, he took out a large loan from a bank, deceiving the bank into accepting his former employer's lost ships as collateral. He used this loan to buy Barnum's American Museum in downtown Manhattan, an attraction showcasing various wax models. Initially, sales were slow; on the suggestion of his children to showcase something "alive", Barnum searched for "freaks" to serve as performers for his museum ("Come Alive"). This attracted a large audience despite protests and poor reviews, prompting Barnum to rename his venture "Barnum's Circus." To see the whole movie unfold, you need to watch it. It is a fun musical that I highly recommend.

7 Hops and Shelly by: Lyric Nolte Go br - I mean, go help get my money from The River Bank. Hops told Shelly. Shelly thought Hops was nice and helpful, but he was really a criminal and mean. Shelly had shadows creeping over him in the dark muddy corridor of The River Bank. He opened the safe and took one thousand sand dollars for Hops. The cops walked up and Shelly trembled. You re under arrest for stealing! the cop said sternly. B-b-but I m not stealing, shelly whined. Do you know Hops the frog? they asked. Yes, I am helping him, he said. Stop now! said the cop. I will bring him to you, said Shelly. Shelly led the cops to Hops s house. KNOCK! KNOCK! KNOCK! Hops answered the door and it was the cops. You are under arrest! yelled the cops. Hops jumped ten feet high. Hops learned to never steal again. Lego Robotics Club By: Mrs. Bonnette PVE Lego Robotics club members spend time constructing, programing and troubleshooting the robot they create. Students love the challenge of discovering how to overcome an obstacle or how to program the robot to make a right turn. The team this school year participated in NISD s Techno Expo Lego Robotics competition. Students were given a rubric that included teamwork, robots functionality, and task completion. Students took first place over all elementary schools.

8 Ultimate Battle of the Books Competition by: Jayla Adams Our campus winners, I 8 Avocados, went to the district to conquer the other schools at the Ultimate Book Challenge. Last year our school placed 4th. That wasn t good enough. We were here to get 1st or tie for first. At the end of the 2nd round we were in a three way tie for 1st with Granger and Beck Elementary. This called for sudden death. After a few questions, Granger got one incorrect. We were going back and forth with Beck. After what seemed forever, they ran out of questions! We had to call a tie. It was the first time Prairie View ever won a UBC competition and the first time they ever ran out of questions. At the end of the night, Prairie View Elementary came home with smiling faces and a huge 1st place trophy.
