1 . WINTE L Dancers raise for muscular dystrophy by PAT ROCHE You could have danced all night eaten until your heart (or stomach) was content utilized a chance for fame or fortune or raced downtown in nocturnal garb. All this was part of this year's Winter Carnival. The opening of a 26-hour marathon at 11 a.m. Monday marked the opening of the carnival. Thirty-six people began the event and exactly half that number finished. The marathon which was promoted by the Oshawa Firefighters in aid of the fight against multiple sclerosis and muscular dystrophy - - raised a total of $280. The couple who raised the most money were awarded prizes' which included a clock radio each. Wayne Barrett and Gail Spratt raised a total of $604 between them. Brian Mclntyre spent '68 minutes in the icy waters of Lake Ontario in the polar bear swim Tuesday which included four 15 minute breaks. He received a beaver fur coat as first prize. Bob Villeneuve who remained in the water for a total of 67lh minutes received 133 ounces of liquor as second prize. A MacDonald's - sponsored free supper was followed by a ham burger-ea ting contest which was won by Jon Tredwell first year public rela tions-journalism. He consumed three hamburgers in four minutes. He received a variety of prizes which included a coupon for a free pair of jeans six. cinema tickets and a knapsack. Lillian Jacoby was elected Carnival Queen at the pub held at the Polish Veteran's Hall Tuesday night. A pancake breakfast preceeded a pancake eating contest. The winners were Ed Milligan and Donna Ritter. On Wednesday afternoon the recent Canadian film Paperback Hero was shown in the Sirncoe Building as well as The Three Stooges and the Flin tstones. A demonstration of piano playing proficiency at talent night brought the prize for best musical talent to Lori Larson. Bob Gladney Hugh McKee Tim Anderson and Yolanda Van De Velt who won the prize for the best skit were also awarded the prize for the most entertaining performance. I I Debbie Apolcer and Cindy Fuller were given the prize for the dance category as they were the only entries. The award for best comedy went to a group who performed a hillbillies act. A dance Thursday night marked the end of the Carnival events. The drawing for the winter carnival grand prize a trip for two to the Bahamas. was made at the dance. Though scores of students were disappointed it was a pleasant surprise for Debbie Apolcer who had entered all but three of the carnival events. The trip was donated by Tony Nave Travel Agency and Skylark Holidays. For 50 cents you could put a friend in jail at the dance for fifteen minutes. This "jail- C house" raised approximately $80 for the campaign against muscular dystrophy and multiple sclerosis. The scavenger hunt was terminated at the dance. The. winners were all members of a second-year secretarial class S2E. Wednesday was the band at the dance which was attended by about 400 people... ". L.... L 1 ; ' " I.. I. 8 r;.
