Join us on August 5 th at 6:00 PM at the park on the Adams County Fairgrounds. Please bring a covered dish to share (this is a pot luck picnic), table service and drinks will be provided. We hope to see all of our Fair Family there! Fair Evaluation On Monday August 6 th at 6:30 PM the 4-H Council is hosting their annual Fair Evaluation meeting in the Assembly Room at the Adams County Office Building. You are invited to this meeting to voice any compliments or concerns regarding the 2018 Adams County Fair. Everyone in attendance will be heard from at this meeting however no actions will be taken on items brought forth. The suggestions will be sent to the appropriate 4-H council committees to be addressed at a future meeting. Remember Thank-Yous Please remember to send your special thank you notes. Some of the people that you may need to thank are: the Ag. Society members, Fairgrounds Staff, Morrison Enterprises & Julie s Xpressions (ribbons), livestock auction buyers, Hastings Chamber of Commerce Ag. 4 A Note from the office: Our office wants to say Thank You to the: Youth for participating and making the 4-H program and fair worthwhile. Superintendents and assistants for all their hard work and time. Leaders, parents, and grandparents for assisting our youth to get them ready for fair. Volunteers for their time and belief in the program. Marilyn Shaw and the Jr. Leaders for their food stand throughout the week of County Fair. Judges for their constructive criticism to help our youth learn & improve for next year. Heritage Bank for the Hamburger Feed during livestock check in at the fair. Chamber of Commerce for organizing and supporting the Livestock Auction. Ruhter Auction for running the Livestock Auction. All businesses that attended and bought animals at the Livestock Auction. 4-H Council for their guidance throughout the year. Ag. Society for working with us and supporting the 4-H program. Community for visiting the fair, giving donations, and supporting the program. Summer Intern at the Extension Office: Thanks for all your help and assistance, Bailey Johnson. Leaders & Parents Corner Junior Leader News The next Adams County 4-H Junior Leaders meeting will be Aug 5 th at 5:00 PM at the Community Service Building on the fairgrounds. 5 STATE FAIR INFORMATION 2018 State Fair Information The State Fair Premium and Rule book is now online at State Livestock and in person Contests Entries Due online August 10 before 8:00 PM It is the responsibility of the exhibitor to enter all of his or her Livestock/Small Animal & Dog exhibits and In Person Contest entries for the Nebraska State Fair on their ShoWorks website, which opened on July 10th. To register for the 2018 Nebraska State Fair, 4-H and FFA exhibitors and parents must complete the online registration and pay by credit card. Instructions and Videos for online entry are available on their website also. Like last year, you can register and pay for both 4-H and FFA entries as well as purchase discounted fair passes in one convenient process at this website: before 8:00 PM CST on Friday, August 10th when this website will be shut down. Please a copy of your entries to the Extension Office when completed so that we will know which of our youth are participating at these events. Discount Gate Tickets The State Fair Board is again offering Discount Gate Tickets to 4-H families for State Fair the cost is $5.00 per ticket with a $.50 handling fee per family and can be ordered thru the Adams County Extension Office by noon on August 6th. You will be notified when we get them, and can then be picked up at the Extension Office or when you drop off State Fair Static Exhibits on August 21st. FYI Gate Admission Information for 2018: Normal Adult (age 13 and older) $12 ea. Children (6-12 yrs old) $3.00 ea. Kids 5 and under are Free. Days of Discount Gate Admission Monday, August 27th and Wednesday, August 29th Adults $5.00 ea. Tuesday, August 28th everyone is $2.00 ea. Thursday August 30th everyone is $3.00 ea. Badges: (all 11 days entry) $25 each - If you want this, you need to go online and order them yourselves and must pick them up in Grand Island. Static State Fair Exhibits All static exhibits going to State Fair should be delivered to the Assembly Room in the Adams County Office Building (300 N St. Joesph) on Tuesday, August 21 st from 7:30 AM to 6:00 PM. We will not accept exhibits any other day. No early arrivals will be accepted. Pick up for the static exhibits will be from 12:00 PM to 5:00 PM on Wednesday, September 5 th. State Fair Livestock Exhibitors Please read the health requirements for animals exhibited at the 2018 Nebraska State Fair which can be found at: 5

6 AKSARBEN INFORMATION AKSARBEN News Management has suspended (dropped) the following shows for Poultry (Market Broilers) Rabbit Premier Exhibitor Dairy They are going to re-evaluate these shows in the future. Feeder Calves Changes: NO DNA samples are needed and there is no charge for nominating your feeder calves. You must have nominated your animals online by June 15 th and turn in the Nomination Worksheet to our office by June 20 th. AKSARBEN Entries All current/updated entry information and materials for AKSARBEN events can be found at Entries and Fees for the Horse show or Stock Show events will be done Online in Final day to submit entries is Friday, August 31st by 5 PM Please a copy of your entries to the Extension Office when completed so that we will know which of our youth are participating at these events. Youth Information Record Books, Career Portfolios, Diamond Clover Applications and Golden Clover Applications are due in the Extension Office by 5:00 PM on Monday, September 17 th. 4-H 101 No Meeting in August Are you new to the 4-H program and need some extra guidance? This group will navigate you through your first or second year of 4-H, you will be instructed on deadlines, projects and exhibits, guided on proper 4-H proceedures all while having a great time. This special interest group will meet on the first Monday of each month from 5:30 PM to 6:30 PM at the Assembly Room in the ACOB building 300 N St Joseph Ave Hastings. The next regular meeting is September 10 th (date change due to Labor Day), this meeting will be covering record books & career portfolios, please RSVP the Extension Office at Citizenship Washington Focus Trip Youth who are 15 to 18 years old in the years of 2019 & 2022 are invited and welcomed to sign up for a trip of a lifetime! Youth will experience the cities of Chicago, New York City, Washington D.C. and more. If you are interested in attending any future conferences, please contact NE Extension in Adams County at (402) It is never too early to sign up. Fundraising has now started; Money earned at any fundraising activity will be applied to your 2019 or 2022 CWF trip fund. Please contact the Adams County Extension Office for further information. Mark your calendars for a meeting on August 2:00 PM at the Community Service Building on the fairgrounds. 6

7 Shooting Sports Project Information Adams County 4-H Shooting Sports Participants please pick up your items in the Extension Office! Family & Consumer Science Quilts of Valor Statewide Challenge Nebraska 4-H will be accepting Quilts of Valor at the 2018 Nebraska State Fair. Quilts that received purple ribbons at the county fair can be entered and judged in the Quilt Quest, Home Environment and Citizenship project areas. All other Quilts of Valor that will not be judged can be dropped off in Adams County during the Adams County state fair drop off time on Aug 21 st. We plan on displaying all Quilts of Valor at the fair and have the Quilts of Valor Presentation on Monday, September 3 rd beginning at 10:00 AM in the 4-H Building. 4-H'ers and volunteers who have made and donated quilts will be recognized as their quilt is shown on stage. Healthy Lifestyles Tennis The tournament will be held on Wednesday August 8 th at 6:30 PM Tennis Tournament - one does not need to take the tennis lessons to compete at the tournament, but you must have enrolled in the Tennis project by enrollment deadline and have pre-entered with medical release forms into the Extension Office by July 25 th. Release forms were mailed out to 4-H ers enrolled in the tennis project. Late registration will be accepted with a ribbon drop. Environmental Ed & Earth Science Grass, Weed, Forb, and Crop Identification Contest Participation in this contest provides a good opportunity to walk outside and learn about plants that make a difference for crop and livestock production. Practice sessions will be held in fields and pastures where the growing plants can be found. The last practice session will be Aug 7 th at Anderson s, please call the Extension Office for driving directions. The contest is scheduled for 6:30 PM on August 9 th at Ochsners. Those wishing to participate in the State contest must be register online by family deadline is August 5:00 PM. 7
