On March 1 st in 1867, Nebraska became the country s 37 th state. The Nebraska 150 Celebration kicks off with special events all across the state. Find out more at ne150.org. New! We have added Fair classes related to this special event! You will be able to enter a project of choice related to the state of Nebraska. Your exhibit might showcase your knowledge of Nebraska (culture, history, people, landscape, etc.), an exhibit showing how you celebrated this event, or an exhibit featuring the pride of being a Nebraskan (t-shirt, photos, etc.). Nebraska 4-H, in partnership with the Nebraska 4-H Foundation, is celebrating the Nebraska Statehood 150 with the 4-H Clover Chase! Between March 1 - August 15, 2017, Nebraska 4-H will be hosting a photo scavenger hunt for all 4-H members. Using an app, participants will complete challenges and submit photo entries on social media using #NE4HChase. After submitting photos and earning 150 points, participants will be eligible to receive a commemorative water bottle from their local Nebraska Extension Office and will be entered into a drawing to win a drone with video capability. The Nebraska Extension Office with the highest percentage of participation wins a free National Youth Science Day kit! Complete details about the 4-H Clover Chase can be found at clover-chase. 2 4-H MODELING CLINIC Are you ready to strut your stuff at the 4-H Fashion Show? If you d like to practice before the big day, a modeling clinic will be held on Tuesday, June 20th from 1:00-2:30 pm. We will meet in the Extension meeting room at College Park to go over modeling basics and hear some tips for judging day. After practicing in the meeting room, everyone will go to the theater to walk the actual runway. Your narrations will be available to read while you model. A special thanks to Jacque & Amy Johnson for leading this clinic! Please call the Extension office by June 16th at to let them know you will be attending. Fashion Show Date Set Clothing Judging Day and the Fashion Show will be held Thursday, June 22, The next 4-H Council meeting will be held Monday, March 13th at 6:30 pm at the Extension office. Contact Megan if you, your family or club is interested in setting the theme and decorating the stage for the show. The Nebraska FFA and the Nebraska 4-H Foundation, in cooperation with the Nebraska FFA Alumni, have submitted an application for an FFA and 4-H organizational license plate to the Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicles. The DMV approves or denies such applications quarterly. We will receive notification at the end of March 2017 regarding its status. At that time, if we receive approval, we are requesting all interested supporters of FFA & 4-H to consider purchasing this plate for their vehicles. These license plates will go into production as soon as we receive 250 applications.
3 Hall County 4-H Fine Arts Night (A Combination of Speech & Talent Contests) Excited about 4-H? Express yourself verbally through the 4-H Public Speaking Contest or perform a talent at the 4-H Fine Arts Night. Youth have the opportunity to write a Speech or a Public Service Announcement (PSA) that incorporates the topic of 4-H and deliver it to an audience. The 4-H Public Speaking Contest helps youth develop skills for communicating about current issues to real audiences, learn how to organize and prepare a speech, develop speech delivery skills, learn how to present themselves to others, and develop self-confidence. Deadline for registration is May 10th. This event has been held during State Fair in the past. What are 4-H School Enrichment Programs? School enrichment programs are learning experiences offered to students during school hours by local 4-H educators. These programs are designed to enhance the subject matter being studied in the classroom, provide hands-on education, introduce a new topic to students, or spark a new interest! The 4-H school enrichment program is a great way to connect and collaborate with your local Extension office and achieve your classroom educational goals. Our current programs focus on STEM, Agricultural Literacy, and Entrepreneurship. To see the complete program offerings, please visit go.unl.edu/angm.
4 SCHOLARSHIPS Husker Harvest Day Scholarship. Nine scholarships valued at $1,200 each for students pursuing a post-secondary education in various areas of the field of agriculture will be awarded by the Agricultural Institute of Nebraska, Grand Island Chamber of Commerce, and Farm Progress Companies. Applications must be postmarked by March 24, 2017 to the GI Chamber of Commerce at the address listed on the bottom of the scholarship. Contact the Hall County Extension Office for an application. The Hall County 4-H Council will award two $100 Camp scholarships (4-H age 12 and under). To apply, visit hall.unl.edu for the Camp Scholarship Application or contact the Hall County Extension Office. Applications are due April H members (13 or older) may request funds to attend camp or other contests. The 2017 Hall County Fair Premium Book will be ready soon! Watch your for more information! The Nebraska 4-H Foundation has once again graciously donated funds to allow us to provide camperships to individuals that would not be able to afford camp otherwise. Camperships are available in the amount of $100 and must be requested prior to registering for camp. Below is the information needed in order to award a campership to an individual. To apply for a campership, please submit the following information to Lindsay Shearer by or mail. Allow 7-10 business days for response to campership request. Please note that single day camp sessions are not eligible for Camperships. *Campership requests must be received and approved prior to registration for a camp session. A request for campership support from the parent/guardian. Please be sure to include the name, age, and gender for each camper and the session each camper would like to attend. A brief statement from the parent or from the camper expressing why they would like to attend camp this summer. Once a request for a campership has been approved you will receive notification from Lindsay and receive an authorization code for registration that can be entered online or documented on a mail-in registration form. Following any campership support, we do ask that the camper send a thank-you note to donors sharing a highlight from their summer camp experience. Early Bird Registration is April 15. Camps are offered at three locations in Nebraska and for youth ages There is something for everyone!
5 Nebraska 4-H Shooting Sports Leader Certification Workshop in Albion A Nebraska 4-H Shooting Sports Leader Certification Workshop is scheduled for April 1-2 at the Boone County Fairgrounds in Albion. The deadline to register for the Albion session is March 22. Volunteers have the opportunity to become certified as an adult (21 years and older) or apprentice (14-20 years old) leader. Four project areas will be offered at the Albion Workshop - rifle, hunting skills, shotgun, and archery. There is a minimum number of participants needed to offer these disciplines at the workshop. Workshop participants will learn under expert instruction from members of the Nebraska State 4-H Shooting Sports Training Team. The registration fee is $ per person for initial certification and those individuals adding an additional discipline. This fee includes meals, supplies and program materials. Participants must make their own lodging arrangements. Registration on Saturday runs from 8:00 am to 8:45 am. For more workshop information and registration link, go to the 4-H Shooting Sports web page, or call Steve Pritchard at (402) or (308) Registration is available only online at the link provided in the brochure or they can register directly Raising Nebraska Summer Intern Position Start Date: May 2017 End Date: August 2017 This position encompasses the complete management of the landscape located at Raising Nebraska: Outdoors (RN-O) at the State Fairgrounds in Grand Island. The management will consist of, but is not limited to the following duties: 1) planting and management of annual flowers and vegetables, 2) management of small fruits and fruit trees, 3) planting and care of agronomic crops (i.e. corn, sorghum, soybeans, dry beans, wheat, etc.), 4) management of the various trees and shrubs within the landscape, 5) management of the various turfgrass varieties on the site. Estimated hours per week are 30 to 40. Learning new things about crops? Considering a career involving crops, insects, diseases, soils, water or more? Do you want to help figure out how to feed our world s growing population in a sustainable way? Nebraska Extension and the Nebraska Corn Board are offering the sixth Innovative Youth Corn Challenge contest. This contest, open to 4-H members (age 10 & older as of Jan. 1st) or FFA members (in-school members), guides participants through all aspects of corn production, as well as agricultural careers related to corn production. As a team (2 or more participants), youth will be challenged to implement a production practice different than normal to determine if they increased their yield. Economics and sustainability of the practice will also be considered. Yields, cropping history, and production information will be collected in the Corn Yield Challenge management summary. Cash prizes and plaques will be given to the first, second, and third place teams. First place will receive $1,000, second place will receive $500, and third place will receive $250. Sustainability, crop scouting and extra mile awards will also be given, each worth $150. To participate in 2017, youth must complete and return an entry form by March 15 th to the Fillmore County Extension Office in Geneva, NE. Forms can be downloaded after January 1 st at cropwatch.unl.edu/youth/ activities. June 15 - Hall County Fair entries due. Herdsmanship Superintendent needed to judge large and small animal Herdsmanship in the evenings during the Hall County Fair! Hall County 4-H Council members recently voted to follow the State Fair s rules in these areas: 1) Hall County Fair will switch to a Blow and Go Beef Show, including Showmanship. 2) Hall County Fair will no longer have rate-of-gain requirements for market beef. However, there will still be a Rate of Gain contest during the Fair. For more information, read the that was sent out in late January, which included the Blow and Go rules. Quality Assurance Quality Assurance is REQUIRED for any 4-H member ages 8 and up, enrolled in swine, beef, sheep, dairy goats, dairy cattle, meat goats, rabbits or poultry. Information about the new website to complete Quality Assurance will be released as soon as possible! Webster and Adams County will be offering Quality Assurance training in a face-to-face setting, and Hall County youth are welcome to attend. The trainings will have a $5 per youth cost. If you are interested in attending any of the trainings, contact the Adams County Extension Office at to RSVP for any of the sites. June 15 - Hall County Fair entries due. June 28 - Ride Night/Check entries, 6-8 pm at Thompson Arena. July Hall County 4-H Horse Show July State 4-H Horse Show Attention Horse Exhibitors! To improve communication amongst Hall County 4-H horse exhibitors, there are a few minor changes with the High Point requirements. Two of the three spring horse meetings MUST be attended to be eligible for the High Point award. These meetings are held in February, May, and June. The 4-H member will be required to attend at least one meeting themselves, and a representative can attend the other meeting. HORSE New Horse Classes! District Horse Show Locations: June 12 - Lexington June 13 - Taylor June 14 - Wayne June 19 - Hemingford June 20 - Lincoln A Walk-trot, any age, 1 st year only class will be added to trail, pleasure, equitation, English pleasure, and horsemanship. Participants in their first year showing will be eligible to participate in these classes. If they showed the previous year, but only competed in halter and showmanship classes, they will be eligible for the class as well. Reminder: All horse leaders who give the skills portions of the level tests must be certified! The online course to be a Level 1 & 2 examiner is located at campus.extension.org/. Search courses for: Nebraska Advancement Level Youth Leader Certification and create a new account. Watch all the videos, take the quizzes and then you will receive a certificate indicating completion. The list of certified leaders, and application for a Level 3 or 4 examiner is found at Saturday April 22 nd Horse Judging School Join us for our Horse Judging School at the UNL Animal science complex from 9:30am-3:30pm. This school is for horse show judges, aspiring judges, judging team coaches, and youth! We will have classroom demonstrations as well as live classes to judge. The main classes we will go over are horsemanship, reining trail, ranch riding, and how to conduct oral reasons the collegiate way. Information coming soon on how to sign up!
