National Volunteer Week, April 10-16th is about inspiring and recognizing awesome volunteers for engaging in their local communities. Thank you to all of our Hall County 4-H Volunteers! We couldn t do it without you! The Hall County 4-H Council is pleased to announce the recipients of the their first annual Hall County 4-H Council Scholarship! WHAT IS GO BIG GIVE? GO BIG GIVE is a 24-hour, online giving event on May 3, GO BIG GIVE inspires communities to come together for 24 hours to give as much as possible to support the work of nonprofits in Hall, Hamilton, Howard and Merrick Counties. Last year more than 80 nonprofits participated in GO BIG GIVE and raised over $511,000! The minimum online donation is $10 but every gift grows with added match pool funds and incentive prizes. Hall County 4-H will be participating in GO BIG GIVE again this year! HOW CAN I GET INVOLVED? Visit GOBIGGIVE.org. Click the nonprofits button to search for 4-H Hall County. Donate online May 3rd or set up an account to pre-give April 26th-May 2nd. Shout it out! Post, tweet, text and share to let your friends know you participated. We ask that everyone enrolls online as disclosures and pertinent information have been built into the online system. If you do not have access to a computer or have questions, stop by the office; we d be happy to help! Let s Be Safe! - Important Health Information If your child has experienced any significant health changes, don t forget to update your child s health information in 4-H Online! As the busy 4-H season approaches, parents please notify club leaders and other volunteers with any important information regarding your child s health, especially if you will not be present during the program, meeting, or event. Club Leaders may contact Crystal at the office with any questions regarding health information for your club members. Hall County Fair 2016 Market Broiler Project If you are planning to exhibit in the Market Broiler Project and participate in the auction, please contact the office by April 19th to place your market broiler order. All market broilers (a mix of cockerels/pullets will be ordered) must be purchased through the Extension Office to be eligible for the Market Broiler Project. Two family members may share one set of broilers. Clover Kids may exhibit individual market broilers but are not eligible for the auction. Only broilers purchased through the Extension Office are eligible for Grand and Reserve Champions. Chicks will arrive June 2nd and will be available to pick up after 10 am at the Extension Office. Broilers will be 6 weeks old at Fair. Orders are limited to 20 birds per exhibitor, with the minimum order being 10 birds. The cost is $11.00 for 10, $16.50 for 15 or $22.00 for 20 (must be paid by April 19th to be included in the order). When you order, please indicate if you will use our butcher and the approximate number that you will have butchered, price to be determined. Fashion Show Date Set Clothing judging day and the Fashion Show will be held Wednesday, June 22, with the Fashion Show starting at 7:30 pm. Contact D Ette if you, your family or club is interested in setting the theme and decorating the stage for the show. The semi-annual Tractor Supply Company Paper Clover Promotion will be held Wednesday, April 13 Sunday, April 24, 2016 at local TSC stores. Support 4-H in Hall county by purchasing a paper clover for $1 at the checkout. Sixty-five percent of each paper clover sold/customer donation will go directly to the county 4-H program in which it was raised!

3 Sew & Create to Win a Sewing Machine! Earn a chance to win your very own sewing machine during the Hall County 4-H Fashion Show! The more you create & sew, the better your chances. All Hall County 4-H members are eligible. For every entry you list on your clothing preregistration form, your name will be entered once into the drawing (if you have seven entries listed on your registration form, your name will be entered seven times in the drawing). Construction and fashion show entries must be preentered and judged on clothing judging day to be eligible. The drawing will be held during the 4-H Fashion Show on June 22 and you must be present to win. Rocket Launch - If you would like to launch off your rocket at the Hall County Extension Office, please contact the office to set up a time during the month of June! A BIG THANKS to Walmart North & Terry Holcomb, store manager, for the donation of the sewing machine! Science Saturdays at Raising Nebraska Celebrate the International Year of the Pulse through Science Saturdays, a free and open to the public event, at Raising Nebraska located on the State Fairgrounds in Grand Island, NE. Science Saturday occurs the second Saturday of every month with the facility open from 10:00 to noon. The highlighted program consists of an educational, interactive and fun 25 minute session. Bike Road-E-O and Plant Science Contest will be held Thursday, May 26 at 4:30 pm. Contact the office to sign up for the Plant Science Contest or Bike Road-E-O by May 24 th! Bring your bikes and helmets for a fun contest to test your bicycle knowledge! (Limited number of helmets available at contest) The 4-H Interview Contest will take place May 26 th at the Norfolk Life Long Learning Center, during the regional speech contest. This event has been held during State Fair in the past. Horse Judging Workshop If you are interested in becoming a 4-H Horse Show Judge, would like to recertify as a judge or would like to learn more about what a horse show judge is looking for in ranch horse pleasure (ranch riding) or western horsemanship please sign up to come to one of the three workshops. To qualify, you must also participate in the Grand Entry during the show! June 21 st is also your only opportunity to make changes, additions, or corrections to your entries! Professional Horse Trainers coming to Fonner Park! May 30 - Open NHCA Horse show May 31-June 1 - A Working Cow Horse Professional Trainer will be in the outdoor arena. June There will be a Professional Trainer working with pleasure, horsemanship, and trail at Thomsen Arena. June APHC Show Cost to attend the professional trainer s events is $25 to watch or $250 to participate. Contact Lori Graves at for more information. Reminder: All horse leaders who give the skills portions of the level tests must be certified! The online course is located at campus.extension.org/. Search courses for: Nebraska Advancement Level Youth Leader Certification and create a new account. Watch all the videos, take the quizzes and then you will receive a certificate indicating completion. The list of certified leaders is found at Interested in shows or events before Fair? Visit hall.unl.edu/upcoming for a list of upcoming shows and events across the state! Interested in animals? Check out the Animal Science Experience on Monday April 11 th at UNL. Open to high school students to come and see what it s like to be an animal science student for a day. Have the opportunity to sit in on a lecture, do a hands-on lab with a faculty member, eat lunch in the union and tour the Animal Science facilities. 5 LIVESTOCK NEWS Livestock Calendar: April 4 - Livestock Superintendents Meeting, 6:30 pm. April 4 - Pre-Fair Livestock Meeting, 7:30 pm. April 10 - Market Beef nomination deadline - ID s & DNA due. May 17 - Sheep & Goat weigh-in & tagging, 6-8 pm. May 24 - Quality Assurance Activity night, 5:30-7:30 pm at the Extension office June 15 - Livestock ID s & Quality Assurance due to the Extension office by 5 pm. Looking for some fun, educational help with Quality Assurance? May 24th from 5:30-7:30 pm at the Extension office, we will have some activities to enhance your Quality Assurance knowledge followed by some time to complete your QA quizzes on the website! The paper test-out tests will also be available. Take advantage of this opportunity to complete QA before the June 15th deadline. There will be limited computers available; feel free to bring your own. Please RSVP by May 18th, (308) The Sheep and Meat Goat Weigh-in and Tagging will be held on Tuesday, May 17th from 6-8 pm at the Big Red Barn at Fonner Park. The Big Red Barn is located just south of the Fonner Park Concourse and Race Offices. If you plan to show market lambs or meat goats, you must weigh and tag them at this time! County Tags $.50/each, EID tags (state fair) $1/each, DNA $6 Fair Premium Changes: Please note that the following rule from the Premium Book has been clarified through the 4-H Council (page 5). 15 All 4-H livestock exhibitors (including the livestock sale) shall wear official 4-H dress. Official dress includes the following shirt options: green Hall County 4-H shirt, white Hall County 4-H Shirt, white button-up with 4-H armband, or the last issued Hall County 4-H t-shirt. State Fair or AKSARBEN shirts are not permitted. Beef fitting changes at the Nebraska State Fair: The 4-H and FFA beef shows at the Nebraska State Fair will be Blow-and-Go shows. This means that beef animals will be shown free of any adhesive, glue, paint, or powder products. This was a joint decision among 4-H, FFA, and State Fair. The Hall County 4-H Beef show has not changed any rules and members still have the option of fitting their cattle at the county fair. Beef showmanship remains a blow-and-go contest. Quality Assurance Quality Assurance is REQUIRED for any 4-H member, ages 8 and up, enrolled in swine, beef, sheep, dairy goats, dairy cattle, meat goats, rabbits or poultry. 4-H members must complete THREE modules per year on the website and have them turned in to the office by June 15 th. The website and instructions can be found at hall.unl.edu/hallcounty4h on the right-hand side. There is a $5 annual fee for all participants on the Quality Assurance website. Members can work ahead and complete more than the required amount of modules; just make sure the certificates get turned in to the Extension office by the deadline! Paper tests are available for intermediate and senior level 4-H members to test out of their QA age level requirements; these tests must be completed at the office. FREE Sullivan Stock Show U Cattle Showring Success Clinic on April 9th at the Howard County Fairgrounds in St. Paul. RSVP at nebraska-showring-success -seminar-tickets Calves must be washed and ready to go by 9:00 am for the clinic. Lunch will be available for $5 as a fundraiser for a local 4-H club. Prizes, including a set of Andis Clippers, will be given away!

6 A big thank you to Jim Schultz and Scott Bilslend for all their hard work and dedication to the 4-H Livestock Auction and Friends of 4-H Committee throughout the years. Jim and Scott have stepped down and retired from the Auction/Friends of 4-H Committee. Thank you for all you have done and continue to do for the youth in Hall County 4-H! The theme for the 2016 Hall County Fair Stall Decorating Contest for clubs and families is Mardi Gras! Please consider decorating your club or family area. We ve had a blast with this in the past! COMPANION ANIMALS Canine Companions for Life 4-H Dog Expo: This will be held at the Adams County Fairgrounds in Hastings, NE on Friday April 22 and Saturday April 23. Friday night includes a quiz bowl and fun activities related to dogs. Saturday youth will practice obedience, showmanship and agility in the show ring and have the opportunity to work with 4-H judges and leaders to improve their training and showing skills with their dog. Additional educational workshops will be offered throughout the day. For more information: State Fair update: There will be NO Companion Animal Show at the State Fair this year. Interested in the 4-H dog project? Join Happy Hounds 4-H Club in learning the skills for Obedience, Showmanship and Agility. April practice dates are Tuesday, April 12 th and April 26 th, 6-7:30 pm. May practice dates are yet to be determined. Practice will be at the Five Points Arena on the State Fair Grounds 6-7:30 pm. Enter the arena by using the west entrance behind the building. Parents please stay for the practice. Practice dates will be subject to change depending on building scheduling and will be communicated at practice and via . Be sure that you are enrolled in 4-H and have selected AS: Dog as one of your projects. ( ne.4honline.com/ ), so we don t miss letting you know the dates and times! The Dog Vaccination form will need to be completed and returned to the office before participating in practice. The Dog Vaccination form can be found at animals#vaccination%20forms. Please feel free to contact the office with any questions, (308) Are you fascinated with felines? Captivated by cats? If so, you are welcome to join the UNL Companion Animal 4-H Online Cat Club! The UNL 4-H Online Cat Club meets the 2nd Thursday of every month. This month it will be April 14 th from 6-7PM CST at the Hall County Extension Office. Please let Megan know if you plan to attend so supplies are available. This is a great way to expand your knowledge about cats and meet other 4-H youth from across the state of Nebraska. Meetings will be an hour long and include a short lesson, cat activities and hands-on learning opportunities. Topics covered in this program include: health care, nutrition, showmanship, at home cat care and many more! The UNL 4-H Online Cat Club is free of cost and members must be enrolled in 4-H. 7 2016 HALL COUNTY 4-H SHOOTING SPORTS ARCHERY Age: 8 and older Location: Third City Archery, 1/2 mile west of 281 on Schimmer Road Fee: $3 for each practice or competition Practice: Monday: May 9th & 23rd, June 6th, 6:30 pm. Regular League is every Thursday night starting in May at 7 pm. Youth are invited to practice during this time also. There is a minimal charge for the targets. BB GUN Age: 8 and older Location: Third City Archer s INDOOR Range, 317 N Elm St, GI Fee: $2 for each practice or competition Mandatory Safety Meeting: Saturday, April 9th, 9 am at Third City Archery. **If you have attended two safety meetings or one safety meeting and have taken a Hunter s Education course, you are not required to attend the safety meeting. Hunter s Education - If you plan to participate in the shotgun or rifle project this year and have turned 12, make sure you take a hunter s safety course soon. 8 Like natural resources? The Nebraska Youth Range Camp might be the camp for you! Held June 6-10 th at the Nebraska State 4-H Camp in Halsey. The camp is a mix of curriculum and recreational activities led by up to 20 of Nebraska s most respected and dedicated instructors and professionals. Topics include rangeland management, conservation, ecology, animal science, and wildlife. Visit YouthRangeCamp.html for more information and the application. TRACTOR SAFETY COURSES PLANNED The 2016 Tractor Safety Trainings will be held in seven locations across the state during May and June. Any youth 14 or 15 years of age who works on a farm or ranch other than his/her parents is required to be certified through a tractor safety course. Extension Educators and field specialists will teach the 2-day courses. The training in this area will be June 23 and 24 at Hall County Extension Office. Cost for the course is $60, which includes all course materials, lunch both days and breaks. Registration is requested a week prior to class. For details or to register, contact the Nebraska Extension Office in Hall County at or visit hall.unl.edu/ upcoming. Learn how to make Ceramics! Clay Corner offers ceramic classes that will fulfill Home Environment class # Students will pick out an item to be glazed; suggestions include a small box, 7 flower pot, vase or pencil holder. They will also hand-create from pottery a small item and pick something fun to paint in acrylics ($4.00 in bisque). This class will take two sessions to complete. Times available are Monday evenings, 6:30-8 pm and Saturday mornings, 9:30-11:30 am. Note: Classes must have a minimum of 5 students. Questions, contact Geri at (308) Make plans to attend the upcoming Nebraska 4-H Shooting Sports Leader Certification Workshop. The workshop will be held at the Washington County Fairgrounds in Arlington, Nebraska on April 16 and 17. The workshop is a great opportunity to network with other 4-H volunteer shooting sports instructors from across Nebraska. We sew at all skill levels and welcome girls and boys of all age levels (8-18). If you don't have a sewing machine to use just let us know and we will help you acquire the use of one.
