1 Commanders Corner July 2018 Fellow legionnaires, I hope you are all doing well and in good health! I want to apologize for not making From the the desk membership of the Commander appreciation Hardin Post night. 113 My wife and I (as of this writing) are in Los Angeles for the birth of our grand baby, not something we want to miss! On July 14 th we have our monthly breakfast and in addition, we will have an early bird membership drive which will be greatly discounted! Please remind your fellow legionnaires of this event and enjoy a great breakfast with a renewed membership! I want to just briefly let you know of some of the things we are considering for the legion beginning next month. First, we are looking at starting a "Bike Night" on Wednesdays. This will hopefully draw some of our current members in as well as new ones. If this goes off well, we can move it to Thursdays and open the kitchen! Details are still in the works with Post 113 Post Manager, Steve Stewart and myself. Secondly, another project is the patio in which we would like to create an atmosphere where members can relax, listen to music, possibly place a TV out back, have corn hole boards and add some lighting and greenery all this was already in the planning stage when I was elected as Commander. Once the patio is ready, we are planning to contact some local distilleries to have one or more bourbon tasting's. There is talk underway about extending Monday nights from 9pm to 10 pm, and a decision will soon be made. We are looking at a monthly dance with a DJ! One of our members DJ's and the cost will be approximately 50% less than what we are currently paying. Our members know how to step up and serve! We are considering a tour bus that will go to either Horseshoe and or Belterra casino. If it goes well, maybe we can make that a 2-3 times a year event. Along with our continuing service and recognition for those who serve American, we would like to create events that will be of interest to our 1,300 plus members of the legion and spark interest in potential new members. The Executive Board members and I are always open to suggestions, and we will consider all. Perhaps not all suggestions will be feasible, but we will look at each one with an open mind. Hope you all have a GREAT 4th of July! The Legion will be open and having a family oriented celebration hosted by the ALA! Come out and join us! Larry W. Magana, Commander, Hardin Post 113 "Let the Fourth of July always be a reminder that here in this land, for the first time, it was decided that man is born with certain God-given rights; that government is only a convenience created and managed by the people, with no powers of its own except those voluntarily granted to it by the people. We sometimes forget that great truth, and we never should. Happy Fourth of July! Ronald Reagan 1 Steven Lamaster Nicholas Courtney Thomas Hardin Hugh Lyon Donald Martin Robert Norton Dillard Wells Thomas Wood Willis Rich Jr. David Broadus William Estes Morris Kaplan Joseph Stivers Auxiliary Unit 113 From the desk of the President Auxiliary Unit Wow, June has passed by so quickly you wonder where the time went! With summer coming in full force, we again had a busy month. Thank you, Virginia Hobbs for another great successful Girls State! During Convention, our own Jerilynn Kabel was elected Department President for ! A big thank you to everyone who attended in support of Jerilynn! Auburn Adwell received not only Unit Member of the Year, but Department Unit Member of the Year too! Congratulations to both Jerilynn and Auburn for their huge accomplishments! During our upcoming breakfast on July 14 th, Brenda Mau will be set-up in the hall to collect 2019 membership dues. Yes, it s already that time to start working on next year s goal! We missed this year 100% goal by less that 4%, so let s try to beat that for 2019! Independence Day is July 4 th, and we invite everyone to the Post for a Celebration with a corn hole tournament, kids games, cake walk, food ($5.00) and our Raffle Drawing at 3:00PM. Please see the flyer in this newsletter for more details! Fun begins at 12:00 (Noon) until 5:00PM. Thank-you to all our volunteers where without you, none of this happens. If you can find the time to volunteer for just one event, occasionally, it helps tremendously! Our next meeting is on July 12 th and I d love to see you all there. Our potluck will now be held from 6:00-7:00PM with our meeting starting at 7:00. I am only President, YOU are the backbone of our organization! Please participate and help your Unit do great things for our Veterans and our community! Jan Fulkerson, President, ALA Hardin Unit 113

3 American Legion Riders From the Saddle Bags of Hardin Post 113 ALR Director 3 The month of June has been a busy one. The Riders made donations to the Marine Corps League of Elizabethtown and to Camp Quality, which is a summer camp for children with cancer. Both were worthy donations! A great opportunity has come to the Hardin Post 113 ALR! We are honored to hold and host next years ALR ROMP! Planning is underway for this BIG event, which also coincides with the American Legions 100th birthday! Many great rides are being planned for the three day event, with tributes to our Veterans. Thank you Bob Fulkerson for chairing this event! Volunteers are requested! I ve looked at his event agenda and it is certain to be an occasion to remember! The weather has not fully cooperated with some planned rides; however, all who went on that ride enjoyed SGT. York s home in Pall Mall, Tennessee. New ALR Officers at the State Level were elected and sworn in this past convention and congratulations to all new officers. There will be a 4th of July event at the Post so come out and celebrate the 4th of July with the legion families. Ride Safe, and enjoy the wind therapy as well. Richard Gano, ALR Director Happy Birthday, America! We celebrate American Independence Day on the Fourth of July every year. July 4, 1776, is a day that represents the Declaration of Independence and the birth of the United States of America as an independent nation. God Bless America! NASCAR Sunday at the Legion July 1pm. Come join us for an afternoon of racing, bring a POT LUCK, door prizes and drink specials! BREAKFAST Saturday, July 14th ALSO Early Bird membership-$10.00 off dues!

5 Chaplains Corner 5 It s Called Grace For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith - and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God - not by works,so that no one can boast. Ephesians 2:8-9 God calls people to greatness all the time but it doesn t mean that they re not going to struggle. Just because God has called you to the Promised Land doesn t mean you won t come under attack. In fact, very often, the struggle and the journey of getting to the Promised Land is the thing that prepares you to inherit your calling. As importantly, just because you are attacked doesn t mean He isn t with you. We can often feel that way. When we are going through a trial, the pain can make time feel long. It may feel like the clock is even ticking backwards. God wants you to know that whatever it is you are going through, it is not because of your sin or mistakes. He is not mad at you. He cannot love you any more than he does right now. He will carry you through to victory and works all things together for your good! It s called grace! What a wonderful gift! Pray; Thank you, God, for the struggle. Thank you for guiding and training me to fulfill your plan and purpose for me. Please pray for: Dave Hayes / Ron Atkinson / Jeff Hall / Herb Ritchie / Jonah Grogan / Gary Dalton / Charlotte VanKirk / Mary Archambault / Chris Barnes / Gary Daniel / Don Reynolds / Brandon Cianchetti / Darlene Probus / Randy Crank / Rich Gano Please feel free to contact Post 113 Chaplain Homer Wine for prayer needs and also to share our legion blessings: Contact Send an to: homeandlife4all@yahoo.com Sons of the American Legion Detachment Officers for !
