MVAO is ready to make a strong showing at districts and state. Maple Valley Anthon-Oto made a very strong appearance at the District Individual Speech Competition. These nine individuals are Amanda Downing, Josh Hatler, Shaley McDermott, Summer Beery, Gabby Teet, Sara Utterback, Alison Boysen, Shayla Brown, and Alexa Lloyd. All of these individuals gave speeches in separate categories. Senior Amanda Downing gave a speech called Words in her category, Original Oratory. Those individuals are Senior Tyler Martensen and Amanda Downing, junior Laura Perez, and sophomores Michael Swanson and Alison Boysen. Tyler Martensen gave a very passionate speech involving the Red Cross. He gave his speech in the category of expository address. Tyler is a very devoted volunteer to the Red Cross and dedicates most of his time to it. The way Tyler became associated with the Red Cross is quite an interesting story. It all started back in the year 2011 when the town of Mapleton was hit by a tornado. The following Monday after the tornado had hit, MVAO students and faculty were able to lend a helping hand. This event was very inspiring to Tyler. He decided to become a volunteer for this organization for more than the Mapleton tornado. He wanted to help people all across the area. Amanda Downing decided to recite her own poem which she entitled Back Up and Rewind. Laura Perez was in the Public Address speech and gave the speech by Malalai Yousafzoi, which was given to the United Nations. Michael Swanson gave a speech about his review over the book and movie, Ender s Game. Alison Boysen sang and acted her musical theater piece, The Lady is a Tramp. All of these individuals should be proud of their performances They all worked hard and were dedicated to all of all represented MVAO well and made the students and faculty very proud at this school. Give each one of these speech participants a congratulations for their efforts and rewards they received.

You know your body he said, You know it better than anyone else. This is why he went to the doctor that normal day. After multiple tests throughout a week it was determined that he had cancer. He said, You don t think it can happen to you. Berky has been battling lymphoma for our school through athletics today. He has coached cross country since 2004 and has coached basketball since He led the cross country team to state last fall and the girls basketball team had a record of That is why we chose him as our honor patient for our annual Pennies For Patients fundraiser for cancer. This year students in all grades ramped up their fundraising efforts and raised a record amount. Throughout the month of February, mentor groups competed against each other party. The competition was tense. Nearly different goods before school trying to raise came from Mrs. Dougherty s group. They passed donation boxes around the stands at basketball games and raised the most money of any other group in the school, ($455.88). Mr. Breyfogle s group came in third place, aided by a drawing for t-shirts and pants, selling desserts, and a broken nose ($269.82). Berky came to the school one day halfway through the month and spoke about the importance of funds. He told about his personal story and struggle. He also used would be used to fight cancer. 3 2 MVAO teams advance to State Destination Imagination The MVAO High School placed second in their main challenge at the Destination Imagination competition, allowing them a chance to compete at the State level. Four 9 th, 10 th & 11 th grade students from Maple Valley Anthon Oto competed at the Sub-State Destination Imagination competition in Ames on March 8 th. The sub-state competition consisted of 59 teams comprised of over 295 students. The MVAO teams placed very well, earning them a trip to the State Destination Imagination competition in Ames, IA on March 29 th. You are probably wondering just what is Destination Imagination. Destination Imagination is an international creative thinking and problem solving competition. The teams prepare for the competition by meeting after school and on the weekends. Students work in teams of 3 7 students along with a volunteer parent manager to They do this by performing a skit that incorporates art, technology, performance, improvisation and real world skills. The teams have been working together since November on their main challenges, then comes the other part of the competition, called the Instant Challenge. This portion of the competition assesses the student s ability to think on their feet. The students go into a room for an instant challenge of 4-8 minutes where they may be asked to build something, act something out, or a combination of both. To give you a better idea of what the students are expected to do for their main challenge, here is a sample of what our students have been working on for the past few months. The high school team chose the challenge called Going to Extremes. This science base challenge required the students to research an environment in our universe that is considered Extreme for humans. Page 3, The Ram Write-Up, Maple Valley Anthon- Oto Schools This means that they had to choose a physical location where unprotected humans and/or other organisms typically cannot exist because of extreme conditions like a change in oxygen levels, air or water pressure, temperature, radiation, lack of light, etc. Using this research they create a skit where they explain how they can use team created Extreme Gear to have humans survive in the environment. This gear must use ideas from chemistry, computer science, electricity, hydraulics, math, engineering or physics to allow humans to survive in the environment. The students also had to create scenery that depicted the environment and integrate two team choice elements that showed special talents of the team. They had to accomplish all if this in an 8 minute performance. The high school team chose to create gear that let them survive on the southern polar ice cap of Mars. Could you do this? The team from MVAO can. The High School team of NiKayla Aguirre, Alexa Lloyd, Brett Weaver, Rebecca Whitney and Luke Whitney earned out of a possible 400 points placing them 2 nd in the high school division. This has earned the team a trip to the State Destination Imagination tournament on March 29 th. As you can see, the teams have put in a lot of hard work and the team managers (Darla Lloyd and Michelle Hart) have invested a great deal of time to the performances. We should all be very proud of the fact that we had 2 teams earn the right to go to the state tournament and students who showcased the creative minds that Maple Valley Anthon Oto has to offer. Please congratulate the students and their managers when you see them and wish them good luck at State. Article submitted by Mrs. Cox Left to right: Brett Weaver, NiKayla Aguirre, Luke Whitney, Alexa Lloyd, and Rebecca Whitney Home visits make a connection with parents Katrina Smallwood and Mrs. Scholl take a picture during a home visit By Laura Pérez This school year, a new project has started for the teachers of MVAO: the Home Visits Program. Instead of holding parent teacher conferences at the schools as usual, teachers have scheduled meetings with parents at their students homes. The aim of the project is to make a connection with parents. Although it is not being implemented in the elementary school, both the high school and middle school have begun the program in place of conferences. Mr. Breyfogle has already visited generally positive response from the parents. I was kind of worried that it would be awkward, but everyone was very welcoming and it was good to get to know more about parents that I knew very little about. Shawn Flanigan, one of Mr. Breyfogle s mentor students, said his home visit went well. He talked with my parents, kind of like at conferences, but it was more casual. It was a good experience. Mrs. Moser has visited three houses and plans to visit more, noting that parents were very welcoming and friendly. However overall reception was less than thirty percent of parents, which is about the number of parents that usually come to conferences. The main goal of the home visits is to reach out to parents. With parental cooperation, a positive environment for students both at school and at home. Some parents were eager to meet with teachers, but many were hesitant to let teachers into their homes; their children s it. I told my mom I didn t want anyone to come to our house to talk, a student said. My dad says he thinks it s an invasion of privacy. Another student felt more positively about the experience: I don t think they re that bad, she said. I think teachers are just trying to get to know our parents and get them involved in our learning. It is hoped that more students and parents participate in the Home Visits Program and that parents and teachers can work together for the best interest of MVAO students.

4 Page 4, The Ram Write-Up, Maple Valley Anthon- Oto Schools Ram Walking Heap of the Month By Jackie Krusen Disney movie quotes are quite popular around the world. There are some kids that could quote every Disney movie you name, but others seemed to have forgotten them see if they could identify the movies they came from. The people I chose to participate were Sam Halbur of the senior class, Alex Dice of the junior class, Ashley Drenkhahn of the sophomore class, Dalton Kollbaum of the freshman class, and Mrs. Dougherty from the staff. was Here together friends forever. Some things were just meant to be, and that s you and me. Sam Halbur, after a long pause, shouted, Winnie the Pooh! Alex Dice seemed confused and answered with an, I don t know, then asked if it was Cinderella. Ashley Drenkhahn excitedly said, Pinochio! Is that who it is? Dalton Kollbaum who said he was not a huge fan of Disney, asked if it if it was a song, then asked if it could be multiple choice, then she decided to go with The Fox and The Hound. Sam Halbur was the only one who answered this quote correct. The next quote I decided to go with was something a little more challenging, but if you know anything about anyone going mad you were sure to get this one right. Most everyone s mad here. You may have noticed I m not all there myself. Sam after staring at me with a blank face tries getting help from a friend then decides to guess The Lion King. Alex Dice who is still not enthused with his answers goes with Snow White. Ashley gets her answer wrong again and wanted to know if she could get a clue. Dalton and Mrs. Dougherty both get this quote right by saying Alice in Wonderland! No matter how your heart is grieving, if you keep on believing, the dream that you wish will come true. After an extremely long pause, feeling courageous, Sam answered with Cinderella! Mrs. Dougherty who automatically knew this one answered with Cinderella as well! Ashley as well, answered with Cinderella! Dalton and Alex answered this wrong. This next movie quote is a very popular one that even the boys were sure to know it! The past can hurt. But the way I see it, you can either run from it, or learn from it. Sam, Alex, Ashley, and Dalton all answered very strongly with The Lion King! Mrs. Dougherty had troubles answering this one and went with the Aristocats. Don t grow up, it s a trap. This movie quote is a little bit of a tough one. Mrs. Dougherty and Alex guessed Peter Pan with a right. Sam, Ashley, and Dalton didn t do so well on this one. They all guessed differently. Sam and Mrs. Dougherty tied for right. Dalton, Alex, and Ashley all tied for quotes right. It was very interesting to see who knew the Disney quotes and who had the best memory. Maddy is the proud owner of a sparkly blue 1993 Grand Prix that has approximately 109,000 miles. She may drive a heap, but it one bit. Her Grand Prix is actually not in as bad of shape as you would think a heap should be in. Maddy told about her car beginning with a bit of rust. There is a little patch of rust by the back tire. but that is pretty much it. She also described the faulty door handle that sometimes will become unattached inside of the door so she can t open it. Luckily, her dad was locked out of her car. On the bright side, Maddy said that the good thing about her car is that it gets her from place to place and the stereo sounds good enough for her. Maddy s most interesting memory that took place in her car unfortunately was a time when she had to take her dog to the vet before school for a routine haircut and bath. Her dog was so nervous about being in the car that he went to the bathroom right on the passenger seat. Luckily this car is just a hand-me-down from her grandmother for Maddy s 16 th birthday which was last November.

If you know Logan, you know that he could have passed that class without showing up. The problem came right before the end of and test due. He missed the due date thinking If he had been better with a calendar he may have been able to catch his mistake. It was a good lesson even though Logan still procrastinates more than anyone. That, along what teachers will remember most about him. Logan does have some fears and confessions to make though. He fears, Being completely incapable of comprehending something. He also wants people to know that he really has no idea what he is doing. The girls were waiting to get onto the bus to go to a game when Alex Pulford lost control on Riley Ehlers moped and crashed it right in front of all the senior baseball boys. They have the same sense of humor and are always least--in Katie s group of friends is Amanda, who always has her back. Though their graduation is coming up, Katie knows she will always be able to count on her friends, and that they appreciate her honesty and humor. Both in school and out of it, Ms. Downing has tried to make an impact on the people around her. She joined the speech team, participated in the school play, and was a cheerleader during high school. Her favorite part of high school was the annual homecoming celebration and the opportunity to make new friends, but she jokes that walking out the doors for the last time will be her new favorite part. If she could tell her graduating class anything about their time together, she d wish them good luck and thank them for a great experience. Although she is always ready to be challenged, Katie does have a fear of spiders. That won t stop her from pursuing her dreams, however, as she plans to join the Air Force after graduation and get a job she enjoys later on. Her biggest goal in life is to be happy. We wish Katie happiness and hope she keeps believing in her favorite quote: When nothing goes right, go left.
