1 Maple Valley-Anthon Oto s Ram Write-Up December South Seventh Mapleton, IA Issue 3 Google.com Speech team travels to Morningside Ram Write-up Staff: Editor-in-Chief: Laura Perez Layout/Copy Editor: Laura Perez Staff Reporters: Alison Boysen Riley Coleman Jordan Trucke Jaycee Prescott Tessa Rayevich Advisor: Lois Moser From L to R: Alexa Lloyd, Kassi Prescott, Suey Wyatt, Anavin Mounivong, Michael Swanson, Joe Kovarna, Brett Weaver, Sara Utterback, Jordan Trucke, Jacob Schaffer, and Gabby Teet By Jordan Trucke On the 4 th of November, Alexa Lloyd, Kassi Prescott, Suey Wyatt, Anavin Mounivong, Michael Swanson, Joe Kovarna, Jacob Schaffer, Brett Weaver, Sara Utterback, Jordan Trucke, and Gabby Teet of the MVAO Speech Team went to Morningside College in Sioux City to Perform at a speech festival. The speech team brought two ensemble acts to perform. The plays did not have to be memorized or perfected; the festival was to receive criticism to perfect them for competition. One of the plays was called Lockdown. This was performed by Joe Kovarna, Alexa Lloyd, Kassidy Prescott, Suey Wyatt, and Anavin Mounivong. Lockdown is a real life situation. In the play, students are in school when a lock down is called. The children respond hesitantly as they are not sure whether this is a drill or the real deal. As the play continues, students exit the room, and the fire alarm is pulled. Tension builds as the kids have to think on their feet and respond. This play will be performed as an ensemble act at competition n January. The other play that was taken to this festival is called Promageddon. This play takes place in high school as well. When a nuclear war not only ruins their prom night, but destroy the world as well five high school kids have to come to terms with their new reality. Jacob Schaffer, Micheal Swanson, Sara Utterback, Jordan Trucke, and Gabby Teet performed this play. This play will be performed as a one act play at competition. The speech team is excited for this season. They are also excited to welcome a new assistant coach to the team, Darla Lloyd. They hope for a great and successful team. Coach Lori Berning is ready for speech season to begin. I m incredibly excited about the entuasiasm of the speech team. We have increased in numbers and will be enetering many groups for group speech contest in January. Recently, we attended a play starring Nicole Boysen and plan to attend Rent in Sioux City at the Lamb Theater in December, says Mrs. Berning.

2 By: Jordan Trucke On Wednesday, November 5 while the rest of the student body participated in standardized testing, The Maple Valley seniors stepped outside their comfort zone traveling to the Sioux City food bank. Once arrived at the school bank the seniors were put to work. They helped sort out food that had been donated. It was good to get out and do something for somebody else besides ourselves, senior Jaedyn Dannenberg says. The food had been donated from various business and organizations. The seniors had to check the expiration dates and watch for dents and holes in the products. It shows us that we need to appreciate what we have because not everyone has it, Alex Boettger commented. The seniors gave their time to an organization that relies on volunteerism. The seniors also got to learn about how the food bank gives out their food and how many families actually rely on food donations. However, all of the seniors did not travel to Sioux City. Some of them stayed in the community to work on the landscape around the ram statue. The seniors that stayed behind cleaned up the area with the help of Mr. Miller. It was nice to help out the community and make it look better, said senior Cody McCormick about his experience. Helping out in the surrounding areas is a great way to build character and develop leadership skills. We hope that the skills and knowledge acquired on senior service day will follow the MVAO seniors as they enter the work force and attend various colleges next year. 3 Bullying survey results show 13% of students have fear of being bullied In the spring of 2014, students at MVAO were asked to take a survey regarding bullying. The survey was known as The Olweus Bullying Questionnaire. At the beginning of the year, the school received the results of the survey they took the previous year. These results would include current th graders. 64% of tenth grade, 56% of eleventh grade, and 73% of twelfth grade girls reported that they have not been bullied in the past two months. 68% of tenth grade, 62% of eleventh grade, and 83% of twelfth grade boys reported that they have not been bullied in the past two months. A concern is that 18% of eleventh grade boys reported bullying a student once or twice in the past two months. Top forms of bullying reported my students were: verbal, rumors, exclusion, sexual, cyber, physical, and threats. The spots where bullying occurred were: hallways, lunchroom, class (teacher not present), gym, locker room, and elsewhere. Of those who were bullied, 50% told a teacher, 64% told a parent, 57% told a brother/sister or friend, and 21% told no one. The percentage of students who feel afraid of being bullied is 13%, while the national comparison is 21.5%. If they worked hard enough, MVAO Students could make the 13% a 0%. Page 3, The Ram Write-Up, Maple Valley Anthon- Oto Schools MVAO Seniors participate in Aksarben fair As summer was winding to an end, two students participated in the Aksarben fair. It was September 25 through 28. Summer Beery and Austin Hazard both showed cattle and participated in the fitting challenge. Summer showed a breeding heifer and received a blue ribbon in her class. Austin showed a Feeder calf, Steer cow, and a calf challenge steer. He received a blue and a red ribbon for the feeder calf and steer. The calf challenge steer is a project where Austin had to raise a calf from the past Aksarben Fair and show him at this one. He had to write letters to a sponsor that he was paired with; he also had to keep records of costs and activities he did with his calf. Austin received first place with his records and got third overall out of nineteen calves. Summer and Austin also participated in the fitting challenge. They were paired up with people from other places, and had to have the cows looking their best within 30 minutes. They were judged on the appearance of the calf and how good the team worked together. There were twenty-seven teams that participated in the challenge. Summer and Austin both thought it was an amazing experience. Below: Austin Hazard and his feeder calf. Ooh, Rah! Junior s Marine brother returns from bootcamp By Ali Boysen Excited, nervous, scared, worried and anxious are all words that could be used to describe the first time I saw Drew in almost three months. Though the crowd of mothers, fathers, siblings, grandparents, and other loved ones were warned that the recruits might not be recognizable, I spotted Drew right away, his familiar tall body marching towards the crowd, but not directly looking at anyone. His face was stern and serious, but his eyes changed the moment he saw our family in the crowd. Of course, it s kind of hard to miss a teenage girl jumping up and down, waving her arms around in an attempt to get his attention. In the crowd there was a feeling of absolute happiness and relief. Mothers were hastily wiping away tears and fathers were smiling in amazement because they saw how different these young men were. Worry was replaced with joy and excitement. The main change in Drew was his posture. All the recruits were very sharp in the movements they made. The way the men carried themselves screamed confidence. The future Marines had become disciplined and stronger, and gained more responsibilities. Boot camp is not easy, and the stories told about it convey the hardships that recruits face during this time. Finally the crowd was allowed to go and see the future Marines. I wiggled through the crowd until I finally saw Drew and hugged him hard. I led him to my mother and grandparents. Once Drew saw them he smiled broadly and exclaimed, It s finally over! There were many joyful laughs and smiling faces as men were reunited with their families. Since that day was Family Day, all the recruits were allowed to hang out with the families around the base. No one could leave the base though. The base was as unfamiliar to the recruits as to the visiting families. Recruits are not even allowed to roam around base during training weeks, so Family Day was an opportunity to explore the base with loved ones. Obviously you couldn t meander anywhere, but there was a museum, library, stores, and other things to pick through. When the day had come to an end, loved ones said goodbyes happily, knowing that tomorrow was the day the recruits became Marines and could come home with them. The next day was Graduation Day. Before the graduation, there was a colors ceremony to honor past and present Marines. Later, people gathered in bleachers anticipating seeing India Company. The Marine Corps Band played a prelude to the ceremony. The band sounded great, and managed to set off two car alarms. The company walked across the cement crisply and followed the drill instructor. Awards were handed out to the best shooter and best leader. Soon the graduation was over and people rushed on the cement. Marines went and grabbed the bags that contained all of the uniforms and equipment. It s been about two weeks since graduation and Drew has fallen back into his normal routine. The only thing very different about Drew is his new hair cut; one that all military men have. His next stop is School of Infantry. He will leave December 2 and continue his learning at Camp Pendleton. The main change in Drew was his posture, -Ali Boysen

4 Ram Walking: Christmas Movie Characters Page 4, The Ram Write-Up, Maple Valley Anthon- Oto Schools Dylan Lewis Dalton Kollbaum 4 1) Jack Frost from The Santa Clause III, 2) Ebenezer Scrooge from A Christmas Carol, 3) Cindy Lou Who from How the Grinch Stole Christmas, 4) Charlie Calvin from The Santa Clause, 5) The Charlie Brown Christmas Tree from A Charlie Brown Christmas By Riley Coleman This month for the Ram Walking I chose five pictures of characters from Christmas movies and went around asking students what movies they were from. Now keep in mind I used five fairly easy pictures. Starting us off was freshman Dylan Lewis. The first picture, after some time to think, was guessed as being The Santa Claus III movie. That was correct! The second, third and fourth picture gave Dylan some trouble. As we moved on to the fifth picture he guessed it right off the bat as being the tree off of A Charlie Brown Christmas. Nice job! Dylan finished with two out of five being right. Second was sophomore Dalton Kollbaum. Right away he guessed Alice and Wonderland for the first picture. Sorry Dalton that was not correct. When shown the second picture the answer we received was, I have no idea. The third picture was followed with an, Ummm and so was the fourth. The fifth picture was guessed as being How the Grinch Stole Christmas. Sorry, Dalton, that was incorrect. Dalton finished with one out of five guessed correctly. Junior Kyle Drees decided to give it a go. As we showed him the first picture, he knew it right off the bat: The Santa Claus III movie. He got kind of close with the second picture but was off point, he guessed A Christmas Story. Sorry, Kyle, that was A Christmas Carol! The third picture was pretty easy for him as well: How the Grinch Stole Christmas. Good job! The fourth picture was guessed as being the first Santa Claus movie, and it was correct. When he was shown the last picture he thought it was from a Dr. Seuss movie. Sorry, Kyle, that was the tree from A Charlie Brown Christmas! He finished with three out of five. Up next was Senior Derik Via, when we showed him the very first picture his response was, Oh crap! When he guessed for the first one he thought it was Prancer. Sorry Derik that was wrong. The second picture was followed with, I have no clue! The third one he guessed correctly as being How the Grinch Stole Christmas. The fourth picture was called Prancer again. Last was a fifth picture which he thought was The Giving Tree. Sorry, Via. So close! He finished with one out of five. Last was Julie Johnston, who was not very thrilled about being selected for the Ram Walking. The first and second pictures weren t even given a shot. The third picture was brushed off as well. The fourth picture she thought was the little boy from Home Alone. Sorry Julie that was not right! The last picture she guessed as being A Charlie Brown Christmas. Good job, Julie! She finished with one out of five correct. Kyle was our Ram Walking winner this month! He was closely followed by Dylan, but Dalton, Derik and Julie were left in the dust. Good job, everyone! 5 Page 5, The Ram Write-Up, Maple Valley Anthon- Oto Schools Wrestling season begins for the Rams Returning letterwinners from left to right and top to bottom are Derik Via, Cole Jensen, Jacob Schaffer, Dylan Feller, Michael Swanson, Kyle Drees, and Adam Jochims By Ali Boysen Besides the cold, November has brought the beginning of wrestling season. This year s coaches are Mr. Walsh, Tim Jessen, and Sam Hansen. Mr. Kingsbury also helps assist wrestlers. The upcoming season holds great opportunities for all the Ram wranglers. This season there are a little over twenty wrestlers. The guys are already cutting weight, one of the most difficult things about the sport. When seeing a wrestler cutting weight, don t judge, but acknowledge the commitment and sacrifice they are making, Senior Spotlights Ali Banta By: Jaycee Prescott Being home alone is this senior s biggest fear. Alanna Banta, known by everyone as Ali, was born on September 3, Ali is currently living with her aunt and uncle, Tami Banta and David Alioth. I have an older sister, Kiali, and she s a ginger! Ali exclaimed. Her cousins, whom she thinks of as siblings, are Cole, Gage, Broc, Danika, and Khloee. Even though Ali is quiet in class and doesn t focus very well, she is a hard worker when she wants to be. At times Ali can be because it is not an easy task to do. The team is looking good, said Kyle Drees, a junior. We have a lot of potential. This year Drees hopes to make it to Districts, then hopefully on to State. Last year he received a shoulder injury in a tournament, which impaired his performance during last year s Districts. There also new cheerleaders this year. The cheerleaders this year are Jordan Trucke, Emily Johnson and Jenna Mounivong. Returning cheerleaders are grouchy, but her friends and family still love her for her goofy attitude. One day in preschool, during nap time, Ali s mom came to the school with cupcakes to celebrate her fifth birthday. Out of all of the preschoolers, Ali was the first to spot her. Not only is this Ali s favorite childhood memory, it is also the last special moment she had with her mom. Ali s favorite high school memory was getting to spend the last minutes with her grandma before she passed. She was always there for me. She was pretty much my best friend, Ali commented. Ali s grandma had taken care of her for 15 years after her mom had passed. Gabby Teet, Sara Utterback, and Ali Boysen. They are all very excited and have new cheers for the upcoming season. Returning letterwinners are Derik Via, Cole Jensen, Michael Swanson, Kyle Drees, Dylan Feller, Jacob Schaffer, and Adam Jochims. We have a lot of potential, said junior Kyle Drees. Trey Boysen is one of Ali s best friends because he has pretty much been there for her since her grandma passed. I don t know what I would do without him, Ali admitted. Camryn Fitch has been one of Ali s very best friends since kindergarten. She s my dork! Ali exclaimed. Tessah Lugsch- Long has also been one of Ali s good friends for quite some time. Choir is the only high school activity in which Ali has been involved. Ali has traveled to South Dakota and to Oklahoma. In the future, Ali plans to go to college to become a CNA, and then go on to get her nursing degree. FFA Students head to Kentucky for National Convention On October 28, 2014, some of the FFA members got to take part in the National FFA Convention in Louisville, KY. They were gone until November 1. The FFA advisor, Jon Wimmer, took 8 students: Tanya Hanks, Kyle Sexton, Clayton Coleman, Danielle Yockey, Haley Knudsen, Ashley Drenkhahn, Leslie Gosch, Rebekah Schram. They arrived in Louisville on Wednesday, October 29, at approximately 12:30P.M. The convention started that day. The opening session started at 1:30 P.M. On Thursday, October 30, the FFA members had to be at the convention center at 7:45 P.M. to watch CDE (career development events) competitions and got to participate in leadership workshops. They got to travel to the Kentucky Horse Park on Friday the 31. Most of the students said the part they disliked the most was the drive. While at the convention, they also got to attend a Justin Moore concert. One of the students favorite speakers that attended the convention was a man that had no legs or arms. Most of the students made lifelong friends whom they will remember the rest of their lives. The students said that it was a very inspiring opportunity to be able to attend the convention. Senior spotlights continued on page five

6 Alyssa Michelle Boggs By Riley Coleman This senior s favorite high school memory, is traveling to all of MVAOs football games with her friends, and avoiding snakes and spiders no matter what. On October 8, 1996, Alyssa Michelle Boggs joined her mom and dad, Jerry and Shelley Boggs, and her two older brothers, Nick and Nate, into the world.growing up, one of Alyssa s favorite childhood memories is, Having the mailbox in kindergarten and getting to have people mail us letters and having them read to us. One of her favorite sayings has always been, Live for today, because yesterday has been and gone and tomorrow may never come. By Debi Snyder (Look for The Good In Each Day). Many things can be said about this senior, but some opinions stand out more than most. Alyssa s family, friends, and teachers can all describe her as loud, funny, trusting, caring, happy, smiley, independent, and sassy most times. She has traveled all over the place! She has been to Wisconsin, South Dakota, Nebraska, Minnesota, Missouri, and Wyoming. Her closest friends are Anna Delagarza, Summer Beery, Kassity Perkins, Mikayla Lansink, Tessah Lugsch-Long and Kendra Mullicane because, They make me laugh and we always have a good time together. I can tell them anything. After graduation she plans on moving on to college and majoring in Nursing. Live for today, because yesterday has been and gone and tomorrow may never come. -Alyssa Boggs Page 6, The Ram Write-Up, Maple Valley Anthon- Oto Schools Tessa Marie Rayevich By Jordan Trucke Although some teachers may say this senior is shy or quiet, once you get to know Tessa Marie Rayevich, the daughter of Cori and Stacy Rayevich, you ll know she s anything but. Her older brother, Jesse Rayevich, would probably agree with her friends that she is loud and always talking. Tessa was born on August 22, Her favorite memory from when she was young was spending time at her grandparents with her family, including her brother and cousins. When she was younger she also participated in gymnastics for five years. Tessa loves her family and her greatest fear is losing them. Tessa has been all over the country, traveling to 11 states including: California, Nevada, Utah, Montana, and Wyoming. She visited many of these during the FFA trip to California during the summer of Tessa enjoyed the trip and recalls it as her favorite high school memory. While in high school, not only has she participated in FFA, but in cheerleading, photojournalism, and journalism as well. While in high school her best friend has been Frankie Hopkins. Tessa says Frankie has always been there for her. Tessa s favorite quote is, Sometimes you don t know the value of a moment until it becomes a memory. Hopefully she made a lot of memories here at MVAO and, as she goes on to continue her education in the dental hygiene, she makes even more in the future. Sometimes you don t know the value of a moment until it becomes a memory. -Tessa Rayevich Senior Spotlights By Riley Coleman Senior Jaedyn Dannenberg was born on December 4, 1996, to her parents, Jason Dannenberg and Cherry Gordon-Pedersen. Her step-parents are also Dave Pedersen and Shelli Dannenberg. She also has a long line of siblings, including, Paige, Bailey, Brylie, Kindal, Cadence, David, and Lily. One of her favorite quotes has always been, I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength. She thinks of it whenever she hits a tough spot in her day. Her biggest fear is losing her loved ones. Growing up, especially with two sets of parents and a long line of siblings, there is no doubt that many unforgettable memories have been created. One childhood memory she remembers well, My favorite childhood memory was when I was riding on the back of Emily Hoy s horse Stormy. Stormy spooked into a dead sprint home as it was snowing. I was falling off but managed to stay on until she got back to the barn. Jaedyn s closest friend is Morgan Lewis because she has always been there for her no matter what, and she has a good, loyal heart. Another of her closest friends is Riley Coleman because she is probably the one person who understands what I m passionate about, and has never made fun of me for it. Her friends would describe her as funny, honest, trustworthy, and a little dramatic at times. Her parents would agree with Jaedyn s friends opinions, while adding a couple more to the list. They think of her as strong-willed, Jackie Lynn Krusen Jackie Lynn Krusen was born on July 16, Her parents names are Billie and Aaron Krusen. Her parents would describe her as being stubborn, loud, and outgoing. She has an older brother named Kody and a younger brother named Brandon. Playing bike tag with Shawn, Marina, Blane, and Shane isher favorite childhood memory. On her way to a high school football game, she almost put her car into the ditch. She was with Ashley Drenkhahn and Alyssa Scott. She recalls that as being her favorite high school memory. She is also known as being terrified of spiders. Just breathe: you ll never live this moment again, is a quote she lives by daily. While in high school, she participated in basketball, cheerleading, volleyball, choir, chamber choir, and journalism. Jackie s friends would include Mikayla Lansink, Marina Lacey, and Tessah Lugsch- Long, because that is who she hangs out with Jaedyn Grace Dannenberg and if she has her mind made up then that s it, game over. A high school memory that is sure to stick with Jaedyn is the time when she and Morgan helped with homecoming decorating with the whole class. She has traveled all over the place and will probably travel to many more places throughout her life. She has already been to Arizona, New Mexico, Georgia, Montana, South Carolina, Kansas, Colorado, Florida, Idaho, Utah, Texas and California, just to name a few. After the big day of graduation comes and goes, you can more than likely find Jaedyn attending a beauty school for hair, skin, and makeup, then transferring to another college for fitness training. the most. They would describe her as being outgoing, talkative, and fun. She has travelled to 5 different states including, Arizona, Colorado, South Dakota, Illinois, and Texas. The unique thing about her is that she loves to travel. She plans on joining the Air Force after high school graduation.
