Senior Spotlight: Shyanne Hidalgo (photo by Jamie Wieseler) PHS Senior Shyanne Hidalgo by Gold Staff Hard News Editor Q: Full Name: A: Shyanne TelRay Hidalgo Q: Parents Name(s): A: Diana Garcia, Peter Downs Q: Age: A: 17 Q: Siblings (if so name and grade): A: Jordon Garcia, 7th grade; Nathan Garcia, kindergarten; Alexandria Jenkins, preschool; Delanee Downs, kindergarten. Q: Activities/Sports that you are involved in: A: I m in One Acts and choir. I m too clumsy to be in a sport. Q: What do you want to do with your life (college/career)? A: My biggest aspiration is to work at a huge magazine corporation such as Seventeen or Cosmo. Q: What is your most embarrassing moment? A: I have so many embarrassing moments, it s hard to decide. Well, when I was a Freshman, I was dating a senior, and he came into our Spanish class to finish
something, and I was like, Oh, perfect time to make him jealous, so I went up behind Brett and like hugged him from behind and called him Boo. From that moment on, many of Brett s friends have called him Boo, so that s pretty embarrassing. Q: One fun fact about you: A: I hate chocolate unless there s peanut butter with it. Q: Favorite high school memory: A: There have been many highs and lows of high school, but I think my favorite was State One Acts. I think it feels good to be part of a team. Q: Favorite song: A: My favorite song changes hourly, but Robbers by The 1975 has been consistent. Q: Favorite school lunch: A: Chicken Nuggets! In junior high, Mariah, Mckenna, and I used to drown them in BBQ sauce. Q: What is one thing that you will miss when you leave high school? A: The certainty that I ll be okay. Everything I do feels constant. I don t have to worry about insurance, taxes, or any grown- up things. The minute I leave, I ll be on my own. I ll miss having a constant in my life. Q: Who do you look up to the most and why? A: My mom that s such a cliché answer, but honestly, she s so strong, and I hope to have her strengths and independence as an adult. Q: Who is your best friend and why? A: This is such a hard question because I have like three:, Hannah Rosentrater, and Mckenna Cheyney. Brooke and Hannah were like surprise friends, but I feel like they re my rocks. They definitely keep me grounded, and I know I can count on them even at the worst of times. I m polar opposites from both of them, but we also have a lot in common. I don t know where I d be without them. I take their critiques and comments about my horrible decisions into consideration before I do anything. They re like my conscious. Mckenna Cheyney used to go to school here, and before that her and I went to elementary in Ogallala together. I stole a bracelet from her in 1st or 2nd grade, and then we shared/fought over a boy. When I moved here in junior high, we clicked, and we are still really, really good friends even if we don t talk every day. She s someone who will be in my life forever, and I say that with complete and utter confidence. Q: What is your favorite quote of all time?
A: Eventually, it becomes a matter of scale. When the good outweighs the bad, you stay. When the bad is the only thing you notice anymore, you think about your future, or what s left of it, consider options. - Ellen Hopkins
Paxton High School hosts pink outs (photo by Emma Holz) On Oct. 10, the Paxton Football team competed and supported breast cancer awareness by wearing pink. The crowd cheers for the boys before they play their last home game of the year. by Gold Staff Hard News Editor In order to support breast cancer awareness, Paxton High School students held a pink out during both the volleyball triangular on Oct. 9 and football game on Oct. 10, October is breast cancer awareness month, and the Paxton High School students wore pink during the football game and volleyball triangular as a way to support the cause and raise school spirit. The goal is for a large portion of the attendees at the games to dress up in a lot of pink clothing and accessories. The more people who wear pink, the larger amount of attention the event receives. A majority of the people attending the games wore pink, including the football team and Sophomores Cora Brott and Justyn Luedke. Cora Brott said, The pink out and similar events really bring people together, especially if they are involved with an important cause. Justyn Luedke explained, The pink out turned out well, but in order for there to be more participants, the word should be spread to more parents attending the games. A lot of people wore coats over their pink clothes during the football game, but I understand because it was very cold. Basketball games are easier to dress up
for in such events because both the girls and boys games are held in the same location.
Paxton Cross- Country season winds down In Gothenburg on Oct. 2, Dalton Drews (380) runs 3.1 miles in 23:07. His teammates cheered for him as he worked his way towards the finish. by Gold Staff Hard News Editor On Oct. 2, 9, and 16, 2014, the high school Paxton Cross- Country team competed at the cross- country meets in Gothenburg, Alma, and Perkins County, Nebraska. The Paxton cross- country team improves throughout each practice by running both long and short distances. During the meets, the runners must use the hours spent in practice to finish 3.1 miles of running. On Oct. 2, the team ran in Gothenburg. The time each high school student took to complete the course is as follows: Junior Audrea Welch 28:12; Junior Brooke Beckius 30:16; Sophomore Sage Bartow 29:16; Sophomore Braden Foster 19:38; Sophomore Cordell Walker 19:42; Freshman Dalton Drews 23:07; and Junior Joel Schroeder 28:50. Joel Schroeder explained, I feel like we all improved and did extremely well at the meet. We are all looking forward to districts. I enjoyed the fact that I made my personal record at the meet along with the rest of the runners, and everyone on the team helped out our teammates. On Oct. 9, the team competed in Alma. Junior Daytona TenEyck ran the course in 27:25. Audrea Welch described, There were a lot more hills than the meet in Gothenburg, but the weather was a lot cooler. I hope to improve my time for
districts next Thursday. On Oct. 16, the team competed in Grant. This particular meet was districts and the last meet before state. The Paxton Cross- Country runners will not attend state. Dalton Drews said, "The meet seemed to go by pretty fast, but the course was fun to run. I really enjoyed being in cross- country, and next year I will push myself to improve my time even more."
