2 Lackland ISD E-News Standout Athlete Page 2 of 13 Dec. 5, 2014 Training outside of team practices is something Sherman Paul has gotten used to. "I've went to the gym at you know 4 in the morning, 3, four times a week," the Stacey Jr./Sr. High School senior said. For Paul, the varsity basketball captain, success only comes through hours of preparation and practice. "Everybody has the will to win, but do you have the will to prepare to win? I think that's the key thing," Paul said. Paul's drive is the key to his success on this year's varsity team, but the future didn't always look bright. During his sophomore year, Paul tried out for the varsity squad but ended up on the junior varsity team. "I was kind of bummed out," Paul said. "I was really mad." It was a tough decision made by head basketball coach Mike Flores. "He gained a lot more valuable experience being on the junior varsity and learning how to lead a team and kind of shoulder the weight of being the leader of a team," Flores said. Since then, Paul has grown and won a long list of awards, including Offensive Player of the Year and last season's Most Valuable Player award. Flores says having a player like Paul makes life much easier. "I hate to use clichés, but he's like a coach's dream come true," Flores said. "Grades are always good; behavior's great; on the court, he's a leader." Paul's work ethic has also carried him to a 4.0 GPA, but he's had to juggle more than just sports and school. Paul has already lived on five different Air Force bases, including one in Germany. He says his basketball skills have helped him reconnect after each move. "I'm an outgoing person, so, you know, basketball made it easier for me to bond with people," Paul said. The bond Paul has made with Flores will live on after this season. "It's rare when I get to have a student athlete for four years, especially being on an Air Force base," Flores said. "He'll be one that I remember for a long time." Paul hopes to stay in Texas a little bit longer and attend Texas State University to study to become an athletic trainer. Here is the link to Sherman s Scholar Athlete video interview:

4 Lackland ISD E-News Stacey Thanksgiving Page 4 of 13 Dec. 05, 2014 Thanksgiving Luncheon By: Jonah Kozlovsky, Sophomore The 30th Annual Thanksgiving Luncheon was held Friday November 21, 2014 from 10:50-1:15 p.m. at the Lyon Center. We are happy to have celebrated Thanksgiving with all of our fellow staff/retired staff and we are all thankful for your hard work and dedication to the school. The feast was prepared and served by the Stacey High School student council, sponsored by Mr. Poludniak and Mrs. Medellin-Keller. Five retired staff members returned for the luncheon including Mr. Shumaker, who retired at the end of last school year. "The best part about the luncheon was seeing familiar faces and meeting new people", said Mr. Shumaker. The food was excellent and there was so much variety. There was several types of turkey, stuffing, corn, pie, cake, cranberry sauce, etc. which was enjoyed by all! Thanks to STUCO for all of the preparation and we hope to see everyone back next year! Returning to Stacey for the Thanksgiving luncheon were: Pat Flieller, Mary Rue, Warren Schumaker, Allen Snyder and Carol Frawley.

Either Criminology or Sociology Who s your favorite teacher at Stacey and why? Ms. Miller, because I love science and she makes our labs really fun and interactive. Plus she loves Breaking Bad! Have you done any extracurricular activities and won any awards? What has been your favorite class in all four years of high school? AP Chemistry, I love this science class and it will help me a lot in the future. Who are some of your role models? 8 Lackland ISD E-News Science Trivia Page 8 of 13 Science Trivia: Which Of Our Senses Can Detect the Past? One minute after seeing a leaf fall or hearing an alarm clock ring, we no longer see or hear those events. But, after a breakfast of bacon and eggs, we can still smell the aroma hours later. This is because the molecules of the food remain in the air. Like bloodhounds, we can detect the smell. (Reference: Science Secrets)

9 Lackland ISD E-News Green Christmas Ideas Page 09 of 13 Green Gift Giving Ideas Not sure what to get someone? How about a gift certificate? Make gifts. Everyone appreciates a home-cooked meal or baked goodies. Consider non-material gifts. Tickets to a sporting event, movie, play, or concert are a real treat! Or make a charitable donation in someone s name Think durable! Consider how long an item will last before you make a purchase. Often, a cheaper item will wear out long before its more durable equivalent. Look for items made with recycled content. Green Gift Wrapping Ideas Creative wrapping paper substitutes include used blueprint paper, the Sunday comics, or even the sports section for a sports enthusiast. Design your own wrapping paper using paper shopping bags: decorate them with paints, crayons, or markers. Replace tissue paper with old lace or strips of paper shopping bags or used gift wrap. Make gift boxes by wrapping tops and bottoms separately. Then reuse the boxes year after year; no need to rip away the wrapping paper! Save bows and wrapping paper for next year. Buy recycled-content gift wrap and greeting cards. Hang earrings, bracelets, or necklaces right on the Christmas tree, or put them inside or around an open ornament. holidayrecycling.com
