1 RJH Newsletter November 2017 Volume 3 Happy Thanksgiving! I hope November has started off well for all of you. This month makes me reflect on all the things I am thankful for. I am thankful to spend my days with the students and staff at RJH. Also, I am thankful for my family as well. November is a busy month at RJH. Look at the exciting upcoming events scheduled at RJH: Student Council has their food drive going on this week and the food brought in will go to Grace. 7th & 8th Basketball practice is going well, and the students are preparing for their first game on November 28th. The 7th & 8th Grade Cheerleaders have been practicing in preparation to cheer our Bulldogs to victory. The parent committee is actively planning a Deck the Halls night on Wednesday, November 15th from 6-8 PM. Please come join us in some fun and we will have Pizza for dinner. The parents are also planning a Snowflake Dance for the students on December 16th from 6-8 PM. This is a parent sponsored event and your help would be great. All the information on the dance is located on the RJH Home & School Partnership Facebook Page. If you do not belong to our Facebook, page, please look it up and ask to join. We are gearing up for our Digital Citizenship lessons in 7th and 8th grade. Our 8th grade classes have done a lesson on evaluating websites and learning why it is important to research the source of your information before you use it or repeat it. We talked about how reliable sources of information relate to real world settings such as knowing the right way to fix a unique model of an automobile properly or how to effectively market a new product. It is not always about just making sure you have correct information for a school project and then not bothering to worry about using a reliable source any more.

2 The 7th grade classes are getting ready to learning about being mindful when using the Internet. They will be discussing what boundaries they need to observe when they share things online. We will continue to learn about how to be a good Digital Citizen through lessons in the library throughout the rest of the school year. This includes information about AR, as well as looking up a book in our library and pictures from events in the library. Second quarter is in full swing and looking forward to the holidays. Mrs. Snodgrass will be in the 8th grade careers classes working with students to develop their Individual Career and Academic Plan (ICAP). This tool will help students select classes that align with their post-secondary goal. The ICAP is ever-changing as students mature and reevaluate their interests and post high school plans. Be asking your students who are in career classes about their ICAP as we would like your input and signature on it. During this Thanksgiving season, we are grateful for our partnership with Hope Alliance who provides Friday Backpacks for students. The food bag given each Friday provides just that extra nourishment on the weekends for kids who might otherwise go without. Hope Alliance is completely funded through community support. We are also grateful to the Salvation Army who has graciously donated Thanksgiving dinners for families within our school. 9 Veterans Day Assembly The Junior High had a Veteran's Assembly on Nov. 9. The students did a fantastic job honoring the Veterans with respect. Missouri S&T ROTC cadets provided flag procession/recession and the Junior High Choir sang with Men of Song several song throughout the program. We were honored to have guest speaker CW3 Joshua Crowell, father of Isabelle Crowell (8th grade) talk with the students about his time in the military and what it is like to serve overseas as well as fly Black Hawks. The Veterans in the audience were then honored with thank you notes written by students of RJH as their name, branch, and rank were read. The students of RJH left the assembly with a clear idea of the meaning of Veteran's Day. Well done, RJH!
