N Pacific, MO Pride of an Indian Wisdom of a Chief Riverbend Parents, Thanksgiving has come and gone, and we are now in the closing weeks (three to be specific) of first semester. As we bring an end to the first semester, classes will be filled with that one last chapter and final reviews. Finals will be taking place at Riverbend the last week of school in December and run all the way through Friday, December 22 nd. Attendance at school during this time is very important so that students can have every advantage possible for their final examinations. We have many activities to look forward to with our students in December. The wrestling and boys basketball season will be in full swing. Wrestling will have four meets, including the Troy tournament on the 9 th. Basketball has five games this month, with home games on the 5 th, 11 th and 14 th. Band and Choir will both present their first semester programs. Band will perform on Sunday, December 10 th at Pacific High School. Choir will perform on December 13 th at Riverbend at 6:30 p.m. Some of these events will be available for viewing on the Riverbend twitter in addition to other updates and information. Please remember that Wednesday, December 6 th is an early dismissal day for students as we continue professional development for our staff. School will resume for second semester on Thursday, January 4th. Finally, in keeping with the spirit of holiday service, Riverbend will be collecting soda can tabs for the Ronald McDonald house. Students and families are encouraged to bring in soda can tabs for donations. We will in turn donate all the tabs to the Ronald McDonald House who uses the tabs to raise funds for their program. 3 COUNSELOR S CORNER Guidance Lesson November s guidance lesson focused on Career Exploration utilizing the Missouri Connections Program. Students completed a reality check to show how much it cost to live as an adult in today s society and explored career paths. In December, Crider Health Center will do classroom lessons on Healthy Relationships. Parent letters regarding the lessons were sent home with students during the last week of November. Please contact the school counselor with any questions or concerns. Small Groups Small counseling groups for girls started November 30th and is led by Preferred Family and Art-C. Topics to be explored will include self-esteem, coping skills, and expressing feelings through creative activities. If you have a student who may benefit from a counseling group, please contact the school counselor. When the weather is cold, keep a warm heart. 4 Math Department English News Algebra students are finishing up their chapter on inequalities. The next chapter is graphing and finding solutions of systems. 8th grade math students are finishing up graphing and writing linear equations. The next chapter is graphing and finding solutions of systems. Keep checking to make sure all homework is finished and turned in on time. Finals are the last week before break and will be over all of the information that we have completed until the break. Algebra will be chapters 1-7 and 8th grade math will be chapters 1-5. History Corner In History, the students are understanding why and how we won our independence from England. They will soon find out who our first president will be and the challenges he faced in guiding this great nation. We will be ending the semester with the Constitution. How did it come about and why many states objected to it unless it had a Bill of Rights. The students will be learning about the various amendments, paying close attention to the first 10, the Bill of Rights. Science The science department will be finishing up with Biology this month by studying the Nervous System. We will also be taking our science final exam, that is worth 10% of each student s grade, on Monday, December 18th. English classes finished out the month of November and are beginning December looking at stories that jolt us awake in the middle of the night, or just generally creep us out and trying to figure out why we like them so much. We began with storyteller, Jackie Torrence, relating how she came to love dark stories while listening to her father spin yarns in her essay, Scary Tales. We continue with the classic Tell-Tale Heart, by Edgar Allan Poe, before Roald Dahl reminds us why we shouldn t trust anything that appears too good to be true in his psychological chiller: The Landlady. Students will be using the websites Google and my.hrw.com (the online version of the Collections textbook) to access the stories and activities for this short story unit. We begin A Christmas Carol in the middle of December, and then it s on to the holidays and a brave new year! Challenge English students get to finally relax and breathe deep for a couple of days. We will celebrate the completion of NaNoWriMo with a literary buffet, where we sample each other s authorial efforts, on December 4, followed by a TGIO (Thank Goodness It s Over) Party on December 5. We will finish up the semester with a short foray into constructing a compelling argument -- just in time for the family gatherings during the holidays!!! :-) Choir Concert Band News The Riverbend & MVMS 7th grade choirs will present their Winter Concert on Wednesday, December 13th at 6:30 pm in the Riverbend gymnasium. Participation for choir students is required, and students will be expected to meet beforehand at 5:30 p.m. for a final rehearsal and preparations for the performance. The performance will last around and hour and feature holiday pieces in addition to pieces for any occasion. We hope to see you in the audience! Riverbend Winter Band Concert Sunday, December 10th at 2:30 p.m. Pacific High School Gym Students should arrive at 2:00 p.m. for warm-up Save the Date! The 8th grade band will be performing at the Union Middle School Music Festival on Saturday, March 3, The band as well as soloists and ensembles will be playing in front of adjudicators for ratings I, II, III.

8 From the Nurse s Desk Each year January rolls around and I am forced to reflect on my year and come up with the dreaded New Year Resolution Unfortunately it is always something mundane about losing weight or increasing exercise. Why not start before the holidays and get a head start on it? Or better yet, establish a routine that you keep as an everyday part of your life so you will not have to make the same resolution the following year. Healthy eating and exercise is a lifestyle change, not just a month to month diet or exercise routine. Did you know??? The average weight gain during the holiday season is 8 12 pounds. Yikes! That s probably not the gift you want to give yourself this year. If you re getting to the point where you d rather nap than exercise maybe these tips can help. The holidays can be stressful enough without trying to maintain a regular exercise schedule. But at the same time, staying active will give you more energy to accomplish everything on your list and reduce stress. Plus you ll look fantastic at the holiday parties. 1. Reward yourself with new exercise clothes. If you have a new workout outfit you ll want to slip it on and take it for a spin. 2. Sign up for a fun-run with your family. 3. Go for a walk or toss around the football with the family after a big meal. It could become a fun family tradition. 4. If you re staying with family or friends ask if they have a gym membership or see if there is a gym nearby that lets guests use the facility. 5. Use every opportunity to burn off a few calories. Get creative. Combine housework with exercise by doing a few lunges as you take out the trash or 20 wall pushups after you make the bed. Every little bit counts. 6. Power walk in the mall while shopping. Dodging meandering families adds to the challenge. 7. Find an exercise buddy to hold you accountable during the holiday season. 8. Don t worry about losing weight, just work on not adding the extra holiday pounds. 9. Ask for a personal trainer or boot camp package for Christmas. 10. Don t give up. If you have a few slips along the way it s okay. Don t give into all-or-nothing thinking. 11. Students, why not help out elderly with snow shoveling? Great exercise! Hopefully this gives you a few extra ways to stay motivated to exercise during the holiday season. What works for you? 9 Beta Club On December 1 st we had another successful Day of Service. Beta Club students did an excellent job planning the day and making sure that everything stayed organized through out the day. Thank you for your donations of wrapping paper, tape and labels. Students, please check SIS and make sure you are keeping your grades up. Finals are just around the corner so make sure you are studying. Student Council The Student Council would like to thank students and staff that made a donation to our Thanksgiving baskets this year! Because of your generosity, we were able to give 25 Riverbend families a basket full of goodies for Thanksgiving.
