1 Maple Valley-Anthon Oto s Ram Write-Up May South Seventh Mapleton, IA Issue 8 Google.com MVAO is losing a teacher Ram Write-up Staff: Editor-in-Chief: Ali Boysen Layout/Copy Editor: Ali Boysen Technical Editor: Jaycee Prescott Staff Reporters: Kyle Drees Nick Hollingshead Joe Kovarna Alexa Lloyd Skyler McDermott JoJo McKibben Anavin Mounivong Jenna Mounivong Jacob Schaffer Advisor: Lois Moser By Skyler McDermott When Mr. Gill got the teaching job at Maple Valley Anthon Oto, he never thought that being home is something that would be important to him, but after two years here he has found that it is. While at MVAO Gill has taught World History, American History, Psychology, Pop Culture and the Media, and Current Events. He was also a 7 th and 8 th grade boys basketball coach and a high school track coach for the two years that he worked here. Gill has taken a teaching job at West Branch High School for the upcoming year. West Branch is much closer to his home town, New London. Gill is excited to be closer to his family. When Gill gets married and has kids he wants to be near his family. He is also excited that he will be able to be involved in more of his little sister s events. When asked what his favorite memories at MVAO were Gill said I have many! So many great discussions and class activities, a mustache moving all over my room, doing Above: Gill poses with the girls and boy state qualifiers from last year. He is farthest to the left, kneeling. the assembly line activity, watching students act out their skits, breaking the class hacky sack record with Juan DeleGarza, Morgan Todd, Trey Boysen, and Nathaniel Rameriz and setting the new record at 18 and when I put JoJo McKibben in hurdles at practice and she hurdled a few but then nicked her foot on one and was terrified so she cried, Mr Breyfogle then had to show her that it isn t that scary to hurdle and then reinacted McKibben s fall I have many great memories here. State track last year is a memory that Gill will never forget. Watching Derrik Kerns break his own record and accomplish a few of his goals, watching the group of girls grow up with each race that they ran, and showing they are among the top runners in the state. Also the race between Kyle Drees and Anavin Mounivong in cargo shorts and skinny jeans is among his favorite memories. Gill s favorite thing about teaching here is the students. He said I wish I could take all of the students with me. There are a lot of great teachers, community members, and students that I have built relationships with that have helped me grow as a professional. MVAO has great facilities and has a very supportive community. I will miss being here. Gill s advice to the students he is leaving behind is People don t achieve things in life by accident, especially successful people. You don t do things by accident, you do things because you work hard and you have goals. So don t let people get in your way or tell you can t do stuff. If you make a goal, achieve it. If you fail that means you re on the right path to achieving your goal. You will be missed Gill, good luck on your new journey!

2 ournalism classes tour orld Herald Page 2, The Ram Write-Up, Maple Valley Anthon- Oto Schools Book Bash competes in Sioux City By JoHannah McKibben Both photojournalism and journalism classes left early Wednesday, April 6 to visit the Old Market and Omaha World Herald. The journalism class consists of Jacob Schaffer, Anavin Mounivong, Skyler McDermott, Joseph Kovarna, Nick Hollingshead, Kyle Drees, Jojo McKibben, Ali Boysen, Jaycee Prescott, Shayla Brown, Alexa Lloyd, and Jenna Mounivong. The photojournalism class consists of Ali Boysen, Karlee Wolf, Shaylee Ames, Emalee Fundermann, Marissa Ferris, Leslie Gosch, Sam Via, and Ashley Drenkhahn. The classes first visited the Old Market to eat at Spaghetti Works. Both classes really enjoyed it. After Spaghetti Works they had a little time to walk around and go to the shops at the Old Market. Some of the girls stopped at the cupcake store and picked up a cupcake to try. Also some stopped at the candy shop that was full of all sorts of candy, ranging from jelly beans to Oreo balls. Both groups then traveled to the Omaha World Herald were they met their tour guide Larry. Larry explained that the World Herald was owned by many people before being owned by Warren Buffet. Buffet bought the paper because he didn t want a New York newspaper to own it. Larry explained that Buffet does not take part in the company much other than funding it. The group was shown the paper making process and how big the machines were to make the paper. Also they got to see a machine that was used back in the day to type up the paper. The machines were large and to type up the paper hot lead was located right next to the writers and this could ve harmed them. Pictured above is the journalism class just outside of the World Hearald. Next the group including Larry, Mrs. Moser, and bus driver, Gary, all fit in the small elevator to go in the basement to see the paper they use to create the newspaper. The World Herald does not use recycled paper but if something goes wrong with the paper they are using they will recycle it. They use paper from Canada on a train. Also were the paper is kept is very cold to reduce moisture. The World Herald uses 300 miles of paper a day! That is almost the distance from Omaha to Minneapolis. The last part of the tour the group was shown how the paper is packaged. Larry showed us the three robots that lift stacks of paper around the packing area. Larry said that the robots were very expensive. At the end of our tour there were some old type writers and old cameras the group got to view. After, the group boarded the bus and headed home back to Mapleton. Above is the photojournalism class. Sitting are Marissa Ferris and Mrs. Moser. Standing are Sam Via, Emalee Fundermann, Ashley Drenkhahn, Ali Boysen, Shaylee Ames, Leslie Gosch, and Karlee Wolf By Alexa Lloyd Front row: Danielle Yockey, Shayla Brown, Brooke Boyle, and Alexis Poppens. Back row: Jaycee Prescott, Kendra Hart, Alexa Lloyd, and Ali Boysen Twenty books, eight students, and 7 months. Two high school teams competed in the Book Bash competition on April 29. The MVAO teams were two out of seventeen. At the beginning of the year eight students signed up to be part of the Book Bash team. Team members this year consisted of Alexa Lloyd, Jaycee Prescott, Ali Boysen, Kendra Hart, Brooke Boyle, Shayla Brown, Alexis Poppens, and Danielle Yockey under the direction and assistance of MVAO head librarian Mrs. Oberreuter with assistance from high school librarian Ms. Hahn. Due to the amount of students the team was not able reamain as a whole but instead divided into two teams working together, the MVAO Book Buzz and the MVAO Ram Readers. Each student was asked to read a set amount of books of various genres. On the day of the competition the teams traveled to the AEA building in Sioux City to compete along side of the other 17 teams in the area. The best part about Book Bash is the fact that we get a free book! exclaimed new member Kendra Hart. The test that the teams had to take was 216 questions long, and had a time limit of one hour. Each team had a laptop that they took the test on, relying on its members to recall facts from the 20 books that had been read. This year the competition reached a new record of competitors with nearly 300 students competing in 17 teams. The two high school teams did very well, even though the online test was difficult, due to the fact that the internet connection had been shaky and many teams had to keep logging on. However neither team placed in the top two places. Book Buzz placed 5th and the Ram Readers placed 7th out of 17. At school Blake s teachers say that they would like to see him participate in class more. Blake s favorite high school memory was missing the first two months of his junior year because of his car crash. The people Blake feels closest to are Leslie Gosch, Bradley Goslar, Tunney Merrill, and Brandon Krusen. Gosch has been his girlfriend for 3 years. Goslar has been friends with Blake ever since elementary school. Merrill and Krusen share many memories with Blake and he feels as if they are his younger siblings. In school Blake has played basketball, football, and baseball. Blake hasn t traveled many places. He does have some pretty common fears though, those fears being; the fear of spiders and tight spaces. Who wouldn t blame him? Spiders are scary. Something people may not know about Blake is that he can only partially see out of his left eye and partially hear out of his left ear. It s okay though, he s all right now. Blake s future plans, after high school, are to start a 4 year apprenticeship at Atlas Steel in Omaha, Nebraska, become certified in welding, and to hopefully get certified to become a journeyman as well. The May Day baskets were filled with things the students brought. Students brought things such as: puzzle books, playing cards, candies, pencils, pens, fruit, Kleenex s, and other goodies. Mrs. Dougherty is in charge of the baskets and delivery. She has done this for quite some time. She said, I think these are a good idea and as long as I am here we will continue to make them. They are a nice thing to give and the residents enjoy them. We use to make things during Christmas time until one year things got hectic and we ran out of time to make them. Prom is a time when students are able to look their best; nice crisp tuxedos and beautiful dresses replace jeans and t-shirts. This year there were many different styles of dresses and tuxedos. The two-piece dress has been in style for two years now, and although there were not many at last year s prom, many could be seen this year. Whether they were red, tan, white, blue, or floral, these dresses made a statement. Poofy princess dresses are not as popular anymore, but sleek more sophisticated dresses are coming back. Glitter and jewels will never go out of style, but some new additions to prom dresses are lace. Emalee Fundermann s dress was all shimmery lace with nude underneath. Her date, Jacob Shaffer also took a different route, trading in a regular black tux for a tan colored one. There were also many different tuxes as well, from grey, black, white, and tan. Look at page 7 to see some different prom styles!

Throughout my four years at Maple-Valley I have experienced a lot of great things. A couple of these being traveling and meeting lots of great people. During my freshman year I got to go on my first school trip. Our entire choir and band departments went to Chicago. It was an amazing time! We got to go to the top of the John Hancock Center and sang some of our choir songs. We went sightseeing and saw the Bean at Millennium Park, and the world s largest Ferris wheel at Navy Pier. We also went to a couple shows; the first of which being the Blue Man group. I ve always wanted to see the Blue Man Group perform and to get the chance was amazing. The show was super funny! The other show we got to see was Tommy Guns. It was a comedy set in the days of the Prohibition. The best part of the show was eating a meal before it started. I enjoyed everything about the trip, even the bus ride when I was forced to watch Twilight. My freshman summer I got to go on another trip, this one with the FFA. We went to the boundary waters in between Minnesota and Canada. It was a long ten hour drive but once we got there it was a great time. The first night up there we went to a wolf exhibit and saw the wolves being fed. The next day we canoed all day till we got to our camp. We stayed at our camp for three days out in the middle of nowhere. It was beautiful out there, except for all of the storms. Trips haven t been the only fun thing in high school. Sports have been a huge part of my life in high school. I ve made lots of great friends and memories through sports. One of my favorite memories is when the boys Cross Country team qualified for the State meet. This was actually the first boy s state banner that was hung in the gym. That entire season was lots of fun and I became close friends with all of my team mates. My senior year I became super close with my wrestling team. All of them have become some of my best friends. As surprising as it may seem, I have also enjoyed my classes. My classes have really helped me decide on what I want to do with my life, but I have taken a lot of fun classes as well. Some of my favorite classes have been: Forensics, Physics, all of my math classes, and Ag-mechanics. High school has definitely been the best four years of my life so far, but I can t wait to move on. I have made tons of memories and I know I ll make plenty more that I can look back on.

6 Movie Review Page 6, The Ram Write-Up, Maple Valley Anthon- Oto Schools MVAO performes the pajama game By Jacob Schaffer By Anavin Mounivong God versus Man, Day versus Night, Son of Krypton versus Bat of Gotham. Lex Luthor. It is one of the greatest battles to ever go down in the universe of DC Comics. Superman v Batman: Dawn of Justice takes place 18 months after General Zod almost destroyed Metropolis. Bruce Wayne, Batman, sees Superman as an absolute threat to the human race because of what happened in Metropolis. While at the same time Clark Kent, Superman, of the Daily Planet sees what Batman has been up to and wants to dig up some dirt upon him for his actions in Gotham. While these events are also happening Lex Luthor discovers a large quantity of kryptonite, Superman s one true weakness, in the destroyed ship of General Zod off the coast of an island. In my personal experience, the movie felt a little too short. I feel as if they mad Superman, the God among humans, way too weak. I understand that they wanted to make Batman and Superman s battle 100% fair but I feel as if they gave Batman too much of an edge even if after the end of the battle you can t really decide who the winner is. They also threw in too many things in the movie itself, I understand that one fight between man and god wouldn t take up the whole movie but it seems that they put in too many things in the movie. They also introduced Wonder Woman in the movie. She honestly didn t play that big of a role. There were also many things happening at once, for instance you have Lex Luthor was puppeteering superheroes, Clark Kent digging up dirt on Batman, Bruce Wayne planning on taking out Sperman, and secret files of other super humans. I personally rate this movie a 7/10 because I thoroughly enjoy all movies involving superheroes. This movie has a too many things going on in it but it was a rather enjoyable movie. Be sure to watch it soon if you enjoy superhero movies! Physiology class examines cadaver Maple Valley-Anthon Oto performed The Pajama Game on Friday 8 and Saturday 9 of April. They also performed the musical for the middle schoolers on Tuesday 5. Many people assisted in this production. Brian Smeltzer was the Director, Lori Berning was the Acting Director, Nicole Boysen was an Intern Director, Mary Joan Dougherty was the Accompanist, Darla Lloyd was the Costume Director, and the Swanson family provided refreshments for the dress rehearsal. The cast included: Ali Boysen, Anavin Mounivong, Joe Kovarna, Alexa Lloyd, Michael Swanson, Skyler McDermott, Brett Weaver, Jacob Schaffer, Shayla Brown, Trey Boysen, Kyle Drees, Tristan Wunschel, Ben Sadler, Emily Johnson, Tanya Hanks, Nick Hollingshead, Dylan Mead, Adam Plautz, Kyle Sexton, Chris Ramirez, Jennalie Mounivong, Alicia Beem, Kendra Hart, Brenna Lansink, Brooke Bailey, Jaycee Prescott, Anna Hadden, Kylee McDermott, Katie Beem, Danielle Yockey, Madison Smith, Alexis Poppens, Dani Steffes, and Nathaniel Ramirez. Other people that helped out included: Morgan Todd, Rigo Beckner, Adam Ehlers, Nick Kennedy, Dennis Miller, Justin Allen, Jacob Barnes, Cameron Golden, Terrance Gray, Thad Gray, Cole Jensen, Andrew O Neal, and Turner Petersen. Smeltzer was very pleased by the students performances. Smeltzer said, I thought both performances went very well. Both nights were very different, with things happening at different times but overall we pulled through. The crowd s response went very well. I am proud of everyone involved. Congratulations to everyone who participated and helped in this year s musical. To the left: Sid (Mounivong) comforts a distressed Gladys (Lloyd). By Nick Hollingshead April 6, saw the day where Mrs. Hermsen s physiology class took a field trip to the Briar Cliff anatomy building to see a real cadaver. A cadaver is a deceased body of a person who graciously donated their body to science. The body is preserved with chemicals for students to use under the supervision of their instructor and the students dissect to learn how the body works and how organs look in a live setting. The trip was a great success. The students had a blast. Hermsen stated I think that the trip was a success and that the students seemed to enjoy themselves. It s a once in a life time opportunity for high school students to visit and learn from a cadaver. The physiology students that went on the trip were; Michael Swanson, Conor Collins, Nick Hollingshead, Adam Jochims, Marissa Ferris, Emalee Fundermann, Kassi Pranschke, Jaycee Prescott, Bailey Wessling, Shailynn Capron, McKenzie Lewis, and Brooke Bailey. Physiology student Michael Swanson stated I thought it was interesting. I thought it was going to be a lot harder to look at, but in fact it turns out that it wasn t that bad. After initially seeing the cadaver it got easier to be in there. Nick and I were uneasy beforehand. During the lab, students were instructed not to take pictures out of respect for the deceased. The body was from late January, which had been preserved. The room was not only cold but also smelled of formaldehyde. During the presentation, Dr. Jason Adams showed where the muscles were and what they looked like along with the bones and the organs. During the presentation Adams would ask the students questions like; is this a nerve, a vein, or an artery? Adams is an assistant professor that helps with BCU s science classes. After the initial lab, the students were taken for a tour of the facilities of Briar Cliff. To the right: Sid confronts Mr. Hassler (Swanson) about the 7 and 1/2 raise. Protesters gather at a rally to try and persuade the company to give them a raise.
