By JoHannah McKibben For the first time in MVAO history the girls cross country team qualified for the state meet by winning districts. Head coach, Alden Berkenpass, had high expectations for the girl s team this year. He wanted at least three runners in the top 15 at the district meet. Two runners, Aubree Palmer and Jordyn Pester, acomplished this goal by placing 12 and 13, which qualifyed them individually. Pester ran a time of 21:13 while Palmer finished right behind her with a time of 21:14. The next two runners coming in for MVAO were Karlee Wolf and JoHannah McKibben. Mckibben running a time of 22:02 and Wolf Left: (clockwise) Linzey Goeddeke, Cameron Brenner, Maria Swanson, Jojo McKibben, Morgan Todd, Karlee Wolf, Jordyn Pester, Lexi Weber, and Aubree Palmer. They qualified as a team and also had two girls qualify as individuals. Pester qualified with a time of 21:13 and Palmer qualified with a time of 21:14. running a time of 22:04, placed the girls 16 and 17 for the Rams. Morgan Todd came right behind the girls placing 19 with a time of 22:11. There are seven runners for a cross country team and five runner s placed. Linzey Goeddeke and Cameron Brenner both ran a hard race and Goeddeke ran a time of 22:36 and Brenner ran a time of 23:13. All scores were recorded the girls and Berkenpas were patiently waiting for the results. Teams were being listed off and MVAO had not been called yet. Then the announcer said, Third place goes to Alta Aurellia. The girls were relived but still yet scared to hear the results. Then, the announcer said, This doesn t happen very often, but we had a tie so we looked at the sixth runner and MVAO is your district champion qualifying as a team for state. The girls were ecstatic. Goeddeke, who was the 6 runner, won it for the girls. Tears streamed down the girls faces and Berkenpas as they walked to receive their banner and medals. Dylan Blake, the only boy runner for MVAO, also qualified individually for state. He ran a time of 17:23 placing 13. It was a good day for the Rams, says Berkenpas.

2 Page 2, The Ram Write-Up, Maple Valley Anthon- Oto Schools Rebecca Whitney receives Commended Student in the National Merit Scholarship Program Above is Rebecca Whitney. The strong academic legacy continues as Senior Rebecca Whitney is named Commended Student in the 2017 National Merit Scholarship Program, according to Mr. Dan Dougherty, principal of MVAO High School. Whitney was awarded a certificate of Commendation from the school, and the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) who is in charge of the program. Whitney will also be honored at this year s commencement. The Young men and women being named Commended Students have demonstrated outstanding potential for academic success, said a spokesperson for MNSC. These students represent a valuable national resource. Awards are based upon the PSAT scores that are taken in the junior year. This year, the score ranking procedure had changed over past years. This year s qualifying standards were slightly more rigorous than in the past. Whitney missed the semi-finalist by a very slim margin. While I was honored to receive this award, I was disappointed that I had only missed the next level by such a narrow margin, said Whitney. About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Although they will not continue in the 2017 competition for National Merit Scholarship awards, Commended Students placed among the top five percent of more than 1.6 million students who entered the 2017 competition. Whitney joins the honored ranks of other MVAO students who were recent MVAO Commended Students. Rebekah Sturgeon and Justin Buth were honored from the Class of Whitney s brother, Luke, Class of 2015, was a National Merit Scholar. By Skyler McDermott Meet the MVAO journalism staff The MVAO 2016 Journalism staff includes: Jacob Schaffer, Anavin Mounivong, Juan DelaGarza, Dalton Kollbaum, Brad Ortner, Joe Kovarna, Skyler McDermott, JoJo McKibben, Colby Seuntjens, and Danielle Yockey. The adviser for the Journalism class is Mrs. Moser. Moser s favorite thing about Journalism is that she can hand pick the students that she knows can write their articles well and meet deadlines. The juniors involved in Journalism include McKibben, Seuntjens, and Yockey. McKibben has been in Journalism for two years, she is in the class because she says she needs the writing experience for college. This is both Seuntjens and Yockey s first year in Journalism. Seuntjens is in Journalism because both of my sisters were and I wanted to follow in the Seuntjens footsteps. The seniors involved in Journalism are Schaffer, Mounivong, Juan DelaGarza, Joe Kovarna, Kollbaum, Ortner, and McDermott. This is Schaffer s, Mounivong s, Korvarna s and McDermott s second year in journalism and Ortner, DelaGarza, and Kollbaum are just starting off. Some of the Journalism returners, Mounivong, McDermott, Kovarna, McKibben and Schaffer, say their favorite memories include playing games like What Are The Odds and What Would You Do If in their free time. The students who are in Journalism are also involved in many other things here at MVAO. The Journalism staff is a very involved bunch of students. Yockey is involved in FFA, BPA, FCCLA, Choir, Band, Book Club, Spanish Club, Speech, Church Youth Group, and 4-H. Seuntjens is involved in basketball, group speech, individual speech, baseball, Gold Club, and FFA. McKibben is involved in cross country, volleyball, basketball, track, Book Club, FCCLA, BPA, group speech, individual speech, Spanish Club, Photojournalism, and Gold Club. DelaGarza is involved in football, basketball, track, Gold Club, and National Honor Society. Mounivong is involved in football, wrestling, choir, track, Gold Club, jazz choir, Coed Dance Team, Book Club, group speech, and individual speech. Kollbaum is involved in Gold Club, National Honor Society, FFA, golf, and Student Council. McDermott is involved in Drill Team, group speech, choir, band, volleyball, basketball, National Honor Society, Spanish Club, jazz choir, jazz band, and Gold Club. Schaffer is involved wrestling, choir, football, TAG, Gold Club, and Quiz Bowl. Kovarna is involved in band, jazz band, choir, jazz choir, Quiz Bowl, and all-state band. Everyone in Journalism can agree it is a fun and an educational experience. It teaches many beneficial skills for our future lives. It teaches us to meet deadlines and improves our writing skills. I hope that everyone considers joining Journalism next year! Mounivong says Join Journalism because Mrs. Moser is the greatest savage there ever was.

3 By Dalton Kollbaum Page 3, The Ram Write-Up, Maple Valley Anthon- Oto Schools Ram Walking: Thanksgiving Trivia This month a few selected Rams were chosen to test their knowledge on the holiday of Thanksgiving. The candidates consisted of freshmen Maria Swanson, sophomore Tristan Petersen, junior Jordyn Pester, senior Brody Berkenpas, and Mrs. Sass from the staff. The first question asked to the candidates was, How long did the original Thanksgiving last? The correct answer is three days. Swanson was the first to answer saying, I don t know, was it a week? Sorry Swanson, that s incorrect. Petersen was next, guessing, Like two and half days? Very close by not quite Petersen. Next up was Pester. She replied with, Oh I have no idea. Wasn t it like two weeks? I think it was two weeks. That is also incorrect. Berkenpas was also unsure saying, I don t know, was it one day? That is also incorrect Berkenpas. Mrs. Sass was the only one to get the right answer after long thought. The next question for the contestants was, Captain John Smith founded what colony in Virginia? Swanson was skeptical at first but then proceeded to say, I m not sure, was it Jamestown? That is correct! Petersen was confident in his answer yelling, Williamsburg! That s incorrect. Pester immediately knew the answer saying, Jamestown with confidence. Berkenpas was also unsure but guessed, Charleston to make him zero for two so far. Mrs. Sass took time to think then said, It has to be Jamestown. T h e t h i r d q u e s t i o n a s k e d w a s, Thanksgiving is always on what day in November? Swanson was first to answer and was unsure. She had no answer. Petersen hesitated, and then proceeded to say, I think it s the last Thursday? That is correct! Pester knew right away that it was on a Thursday. When asked to be more specific she said, Umm the fourth Thursday? She was correct. Berkenpas and Mrs. Sass were also both correct by guessing the last Thursday. Next up was What was the name of one of the boats the Pilgrims came over on? Everyone but Berkenpas knew the Mayflower was one of the boats. Berekenpas was off topic by guessing the Nina. The last question was, What is the name of the day after Thanksgiving called? Maria was positive in her answer saying, Black Friday. Petersen was skeptical at first but ended with, Oh I think its Black Friday isn t it? Pester also knew that it was Black Friday. Berkenpas started out on the right track, but ultimately finished incorrect saying, its Black, wait no its Good Friday! Mrs. Sass immediately knew the answer as well. Mrs. Sass was this week s winner getting five out of five questions right! Pester came in second getting four out of five questions right. Petersen and Swanson tied for third place getting three out of five questions correct. Berkenpas rounded out last getting one question right. Thank you to all participants! The winner is Mrs. Sass. Jordyn Pester comes in second. Tristan Petersen and Maria Swanson tie for third place. Brody Berkenpas ends up fifth. By Danielle Yockey Make Oto great again The third annual Oto Days took place September 30 through October second. There were many activities for all ages to enjoy. The Opening Ceremony started the celebration with the crowning of the Oto Days Queen, Donna Stratton, and the Parade Marshall, Don Johnson. The Firemen had a supper as one of their annual fundraisers. Just down the street Lefty Leigh s had their one year anniversary celebration with snacks for the customers. Once the sun went down, Hocus Pocus, was played at the sand pile on a blow-up screen. Everyone got to enjoy popcorn with M&M s and water during the movie. There was also a DJ and foam party uptown. Saturday was a very eventful day with the OCAS starting the morning with an Omelet breakfast. The parade was at noon with the Catholic Church, UCC, Anthon Rec Ball, and Anthon Advancers taking the prize money home for the most purple and yellow. After the parade the MVAO FFA had a petting zoo from one to four. The FFA leader brought chickens along with other animals brought by Hunter and Tanya Hanks, Dolly Krohn, and Danielle Yockey. Kim Boyle was also there doing Caricatures. There were three inflatables for the kids to play on and the McDermott Family Shows were there. The first 50 kids who arrived there at 1 got free wristbands that were bought with the grant from M.R.H.D. that the Oto Days Committee received. The MVAO Jazz Choir performed their 5 songs in front of the Ambulance Building for the start of the afternoon s free entertainment. There was a human foosball tournament for anyone 16 and older. Next, was the chainsaw carver who made many cool sculptures. All afternoon concessions were available from the Oto UCC. The night was started with a Catholic Church chicken supper and an auction which benefited the Oto CDC. Later that night, at the county shed, Mr. Tunes had music for the kids. The adults could go to the band at Smitty s Bar and Grill. The Oto Days Festivities were finished off with a free luncheon on Sunday at 11 and a bean bag Kan Jam tournament. There was something for everyone at this year s Oto Days. A lot of work went into the little town s celebrations. Congratulations to all of those people who are Making Oto Great Again.

Bryce Kafton and Cameron Boyle both had successful seasons last year as freshmen. Boyle took a tough loss in sectionals and Kafton was beat in districts, but both have goals of reaching the state tournament this year. As a team they will be missing a very large component. Cole (Beef) Jensen graduated last May after placing fifth at the state tournament. Jody Walsh, the head wrestling coach, stated a few of their team goals were, To field a full line up and compete up and down the line up, and recruit athletes that have been out before. Walsh is hoping that they can improve on Putting more emphasis on big moves and working more cradles and headlocks. They are returning a lot of key wrestlers. The returning wrestlers and their weight classes include: Bryce Kafton (106), Anavin Mounivong (120), Sam Hopkins (126), Jackson Krusen (138), Boyle (145), Zak Scott (152), Bailey Boettcher (182), Jacob Schaffer (220), and Dylan Lewis (285). With this many returning wrestlers, they should be able to compete and continue where they left off from last year. This upcoming season will hopefully be very successful for the wrestlers. Weber says the car has been in her family for twenty four years. It was used as a family car until 2007 when Weber s sister Beth started using it to commute to high school. The car was then passed down to Weber s older brother Paul who used it for the same purpose. Now Weber uses it to commute back and forth as well. Through the years Weber has noticed a few things that do not work on her car. Weber said that, The air conditioning and heating is temperamental, the back passenger window will open but has a hard time shutting if I open it. Weber said the car always makes noises when I drive. She also said it is usually a handle in the back that rattles. Weber also stated that, the noises have scared my friends before, but I am used to them because I hear them all the time. She mentioned that the car has rust on the sides. Weber has had an interesting experience with her car in high school. An interesting memory Weber had with the car was when she was about to pull into her grandma s driveway and the car shut off. Weber said that, I was freaked out and had to restart the car to get it to go into park. Weber made it through this episode with her car and recalled a few other problems her ride has. Weber said, When it rains, it causes the back driver s door to squeak for a few days. Weber also said that, I can t use my cup holder because the drink will fall out. She also said that there was a stain in the back seat from a balloon popping when she was little. Despite the cars things that do not function Weber says the car has a working radio and a cassette player. She also said it gets her where she needs to go and gave her independence. Weber also said that, Everyone in town knows the car, when people see it they know it belongs to my family so I can t get away with much because I know it will get back to my parents! 5 Page 5, The Ram Write-Up, Maple Valley Anthon- Oto Schools MVAO teams dribble into a new season Boys Girls By Juan Delagarza Coming soon; MVAO boys basketball season. The boys basketball team will be lacing up their shoes, throwing on their practice jerseys, and hitting the court for practice. Boys basketball practice starts on November 14. Head Coach Brian Brown will be running practice alongside assistant coaches, Corey Dose and Tammy Flannigan. Last season the boy s team had a record of twenty one wins and just three losses. The season ended after a devastating loss to St. Alberts in the district finals a year ago. They look to bounce back and make a run at the state tournament. The team has some big goals for this upcoming season. Their main goal will be getting to the state tournament. Another goal for the team is to be Western Valley Conference champions for the fourth straight year. It is going to be tough for them to accomplish these goals as they will be facing some tough opponents along the way. In the conference, there isn t really a team that sticks out from everyone else. A few teams that are expected to be on top of the conference are: Siouxland Christian, Woodbury Central, Ridge View, and MVAO. The team lost some key assets from last year s team. They lost their two post players, Andrew O Neal and Travis McBride. They also lost two good guards, Conor Collins and Marvin Gaines. Although they lost some key players, they are still looking forward to a good season. The returning letter winners for the Rams are: Seniors Juan DelaGarza, Brody Berkenpas, Brady Gothier, Juniors Colby Seuntjens, Connor Beeck, Ben Sadler, and Sophomores Calvin Ferris, and Ely Fundermann. DelaGarza, Seuntjens, and Beeck will look to be the leaders this year because they are returning starters and allconference players from last year s team. A year ago, DelaGarza and Seuntjens were two of the team s leaders in multiple categories. They are both all-around players that bring a lot of skill to the table. Beeck looks to lead the team in assists for the second straight year and to lead the offense at the point guard position. They will be looking for a few other players to step up and contribute to the team as well. We will have good depth and look to build around our three returning all-conference players to put a good team together. says Coach Brown. These are the returning girls letter winners. Shortly the girls basketball team will be practicing out on the court. This season the girl s team will be coached by the new head coach Jordan Scholl. Scholl was an assistant coach before taking over. Scholl is looking forward to this season with the team because he wants the athletes to be able to learn and understand the game of basketball. He also wants his players to gain an understanding of teamwork and cohesiveness. The girls have lost two seniors. Marissa Ferris and Emalee Fundermann were huge for the team last year. With Fundermann as the teams main ball handler and Ferris as an effective outside scorer the girls will have to step up their game to compete in the varsity level. The girls team has a nice group of girls returning back, says Scholl. They all show great quality of leadership and dedication. The girls include, Katelyn Trucke, Haylee Halbur, Skyler McDermott, Katlynn Mullin, Emalee Scott, and Jo McKibben. McDermott, only returning senior of the team, was questioned about the season. This season will be exciting, says McDermott. She is looking forward to the excitement of the new season with the team. Mcdermott stated, I want the team to improve and become better ball players. McDermott is sad that this will be her last year of high school basketball but she is glad that she gets to spend it with her team. Scholl has a tough schedule with many good teams for the upcoming season. These are challenging matchups for our girls but it is an opportunity for the team to get stronger, stated Scholl. Returning letter winners are Halbur, Trucke, Mcdermott, and Jo McKibben. This is a hard-working group of girls. The girls need to bring a good attitude and the willingness to learn to the court, for us to be successful, says Scholl. It is a season Coach Scholl is looking forward to.

6 By Colby Seuntjens Serena On September 8, 1999 in a land far from ours, Serena Derksen was born in the Page 6, The Ram Write-Up, Maple Valley Anthon- Oto Schools Senior Spotlights Netherlands. Derksen was born to Regine and Gert-Jan Derksen. Derksen has one sibling, a sister named Denise. Before this year no one at Maple Valley would have known Derksen. Lucky for us she decided about two years ago that she wanted be an exchange student. The reason Derksen wanted to be an exchange student was because she was young for her class and she didn t want to be this young going into college. She and her parents started looking around and went to a few meetings with different organizations and decided to go through Education First (EF). In order to be accepted she had to go through a lot of applications and also had to be given a lot of different vaccinations. When she was accepted she was able to choose where she wanted to go. She decided on the United States because she thought it would be a different culture than another European country. She also said it would help improve her English. With Derksen having spent the majority of her life not in small town Iowa this is a new experience for her. While growing up her favorite memories were going on fieldtrips with her school and traveling with her family. Derksen has done a lot of traveling. Some of the places she has been are: England, Germany, Spain, Norway, Denmark, France, Austria, Egypt, Thailand, Cuba, and finally America. Most of her favorite sayings don t translate properly to English; her favorite English saying is Love it. English isn t her only other language though, she speaks four languages and is working on her fifth this year. At Derksen s old school the teachers would have described her as a student that pays attention in class and isn t a trouble maker. Some of her favorite memories from school are when the seniors would organize parties and they would have fun all day once a year. Derksen s best friends are Veerle Lemstra and Fleur Cornelisse; she is friends with them because they have fun together and like the same things. They would describe her as the funny one but is always taking care of everybody. Derksen plans on studying in Germany after she graduates. Shaylee By JoHannah McKibben Shaylee Marie Ames of Anthon Iowa was welcomed into the world September 14, 1999 by parents Becky and Todd Verschoor and John Ames. Growing up Ames had many fun memories with her friends and family. One of her favorites was to dress up as clowns with Emalee Fundermann and run around town. Something unique about Ames, that no one else may know, is her fingers are different than others. She can shape her fingers to look like dinosaurs. In high school Ames has been highly active. She participates in or has participated in volleyball, track, golf, softball, choir, and Gold Club. One of Ames favorite memories of high school was in softball. A ref made a call saying one of Ames teammates was out. Her coach, Mr. Kirchgatter, was enraged by the call and did a somersault on the softball field. Almost everyone was laughing. Even the other team, says Ames. Ames closest friends are Karlee Wolf, Morgan Todd, Skyler McDermott, Jo McKibben, and Fundermann. They are her closest friends because they have always been there for her and they try to make her more independent. Ames friends would describe her as caring, fun, emotional, and funny. A common fear is spiders and this indeed is Ames fear. She has travelled to Tennessee and Massachusetts for vacations. After high school Ames plans to go to a community college for her generals and then transfer to a four year college. By Brad Ortner Senior Skyler Jean McDermott is described by her friends as being nice, loud, and sometimes emotional. McDermott says her closest friends are Morgan Todd, Karlee Wolf, Shaylee Ames, Jojo McKibben, and Jordyn Pester because they always find something fun to do together. McDermott was born on November 10, 1998 to parents Tracey and Shane McDermott. Skyler has one older sister, Shaley. McDermott s parents describe her as being dramatic and hardworking. Her teachers describe her as being a leader, outgoing, and funny. McDermott s biggest fear is frogs. McDermott has traveled near and far to Costa Rica, Florida, Wyoming, Indiana, South Dakota, and Minnesota. Something unique about McDermott is that she was born during a blizzard. A favorite memory from McDermott s childhood was hanging out on Beau and Tunney s farm. They rode four wheelers and mini motorcycles. A favorite memory of McDermott s, from high school, Skyler was traveling to Costa Rica with the Spanish Club. While in high school McDermott has been involved in jazz band, jazz choir, Ram Singers, volleyball, basketball, speech, drill team, and Spanish Club. In the future McDermott plans to attend a four year college. She has not yet decided on where that will be or what she plans on studying. Dylan By Juan Delagarza Life s a garden, dig it is a favorite saying of Dylan Feller, son of Michelle Ketelsen and Drew Feller. Feller has five siblings: Austin Ketelsen, Kara Scharnberg, Devin Feller, Dominic Feller, and Cadance Feller. Feller has done many memorable things in his life. His favorite memory from his childhood was going to the zoo in the fourth grade. This was one of his favorite memories because he got to go with his friends and he had a great time. Feller s favorite high school memory was going to Michael Swanson s house after each of the home football games. Something unique about Feller is that he is color blind. His biggest fear is burning to death. Feller has not been much of a traveler in his life; he has only traveled to Wisconsin. Feller has many characteristics. His parents think of him as sensitive, loving, and wellmannered. Some teachers say that he is very friendly. His friends say he is athletic and that he has some luscious hair. Feller has many good friends. His best friends include: Bailey Boettcher, Kyler McDermott, and Juan Delagarza because they have been close for many years. While Feller has been in school, sports have been the main thing he has been involved in. He is involved in football, baseball, and track. His future plans are to attend school at Western Iowa Tech Community College and study carpentry.
