1 Volume 11, Number 3 www. alpost142.com legion@alpost142.com March, 2009 As you visit the Post you will notice some renovations going on in the dining hall. Thanks to our Auxiliary along with our Booster Club donors, we will be able to upgrade the room along with some new tables and chairs that you will be able to move without requiring help. We are also getting bids for a new roof which we are in dire need of. Thanks to all of you that attended the Four Chaplains ceremony at the Fort Lauderdale Coast Guard Station on February 15th. Although it was a hot day we all survived and had a fantastic ceremony. We not only made the local news, but the ceremony has been noticed all the way to our countries capital. Please remember that we are working on our Annual Car Draw and we need everyone s help to ensure that we can raise the funds as always. This year with the economy as it is, it will be even harder to meet our goal. Please continue to buy the tickets and make sure that you attend one great party. The 9th District Picnic is coming up on Sunday 22nd at Snyder Park. Last year everyone that came had a great time with all the food and the great entertainment. Let s show the district that Post 142 is always there to support them. This picnic is one way that the District makes the funds that go back into the community. For more information or tickets please contact me. Be sure to be here for our annual Balloon Bash on Sunday, March 14 at 2pm for lots of fun and those drink specials that will gain you additional balloons with more prizes. As always there will be corned beef and cabbage with potatoes and carrots or just a corned beef sandwich, it s your choice. It will be a day of much fun. Speaking of fun, I want to thank everyone that makes visiting members feel like they are home. I have recently received a couple of letters from visitors with their thanks for the hospitality that they were given during their visit to our Post. All I can say is, Thanks to all our members that made their visit memorable. Please make it a point to come to the general meetings so everyone can hear what you would like to see happening at your Post. For God And Country, George Rafajko Commander Post 142 2nd Vice Commanders Message YOUR POST NEEDS YOUR HELP!!! It is that time of the year again! CAR DRAW Ticket Time. Have you picked up your tickets from the Post yet? Have YOU purchased any yet? Just ask any bartender for some. We all know that things are a bit tough all over, however Please remember this is Your Posts Only major fund raiser all year long. We need your help now. Regardless of how many tickets we sell we still have to pay out almost $ 25,000. We are very far from that point in ticket sales at this time. Don t forget any time you come into the Post you can take a chance to win a ticket for only $1. Just ask your bartender. Thank you. I would like to give a big thank you to everyone who helped with our 1st Annual M*A*S*H BASH. Thanks everyone who donated Prizes, Sheets, Decorations and or their Time and Labor. Also thank you for everyone who purchased a ticket and joined in the fun this great day. Mike Love, who spearheaded this event, deserves a huge thank you also. Start planning your costumes for next year s bash #2. Are you going to college, or have a son or daughter or grandson or granddaughter who will be going to college later this year? Please don t forget about the deadline for the John J. Whitworth Scholarship. May 15 will be here before you know it. Please get your applications returned in time. Thank you. We had 2 very special Secret Santa s who went above and beyond the call of duty. I cant print their names but you know who you are. Thank you for your special gifts. They really made a difference for a few of our Posts Veterans families. This year Post 142 will be sending 2 more young adults to Boys State. This is just another one of the programs your Post supports every year. Your Commander George has some raffle tickets to help with the cost of Boys State Transportation which is very expensive. Please help out with this if you can. P.S. Remember the Car Draw. Thank You. Thanks again to all of the members, friends and guests that contributed for the last two years. Let s see if we can continue what we started. 7 Volume 11, Number 3 March 2009 Page 7 Auxiliary President s Message Exciting things are happening at our Post! As I write this article our Dining/Meeting Room is in the beginning stages of renovation. I for one can t wait to see the beautiful room we will have when it is completed. Ladies, give yourselves a pat on the back when you see the results. Our Unit 142 was a big contributor to this project and it was very needed. Another person who deserves a pat on the back for the renovation is our Commander, George Rafajko. Without his planning and participation in every phase this would not be happening. At this time I would like to thank our Bingo volunteers: Madonna, Annie, Mary, Laura, Kathleen, Bonnie and others who have pitched in to help. Our Bingo is going strong and we hope to keep it that way but we couldn t do it without your help. As you receive this Bulletin we will be having our Annual Fashion Show and Tea. This is always a fun time and a chance to meet with old friends for a relaxing, fun afternoon. If you don t have your tickets yet you can get them from any officer or in the lounge. The price is only $7.00. See you there on Saturday, March 7th. At our February meeting your Nominating Committee was elected and they will be meeting to present the slate of officers for next year. Also at the February meeting your Unit voted to send donations to several worthy causes that are supported by our Department & National organization. Thank you to my 1st Vice-Pres. Bonnie Hatt for presiding at this meeting due to my illness-good job as always. Girl s State interviews will be held on Sunday March 1st to choose the girls that will be sent to Girl s State in Tallahassee. These girls may be our future leaders and we thank you for supporting this program. Trivel McKire is our Girls State Chairman and she has been a chaperone as well in the past. Coming up on March 14th is the Post s famous Balloon Bash. If you have items you would like to donate for prizes please let us know. It takes lots of prizes to fill all those balloons. Reminding any members who have not been initiated into our Unit that we will be having an initiation ceremony on Thursday, April 2nd at our General Meeting. Please contact Bonnie Hatt if you wish to be included even if you are not a new member. We wish to thank Mary Stengel for her continued donations to the Unit from her haircuts. Watch the Bulletin Board for her next date. You can t beat the price of only $8.00. Still to come is our Annual Car Drawing. This is the big fundraiser of the year for our Post so please show your support by buying lots of tickets and also enjoy a great party. Your Auxiliary officers have tickets available for you so just ask. Date is April 19th. A Message From The Auxiliary, 1st Vice President It was an honor to accept the Endorsement of Unit 142 for the Office of ALA Department of Florida 9th District President at our February General Membership Meeting. Thank You Ladies for the confidence you have placed in me and for the support you have given me to reach this point in my Auxiliary career. If elected at the 9th District Constitutional Conference in June, it will be a privilege to represent Unit 142 and serve the 9th District for There is also another candidate Jan Tyrkus from Unit 321 running for this position. So again, I need your support and votes. We are still maintaining 1st Place in Membership for the 9th District with % to date and need nine more members to reach our 103% Goal at the close of books in June. Unit 142 has made all our Goals and we are confident we will hit the last one also. Thanks for all your help in recruiting and renewing members. We would like to introduce another new member to our Unit, Joan Costa. Welcome aboard! She was recruited by member Ginnie Ragas our in house Avon Lady. Our Initiation of new members will be held at our April 2nd General Membership Meeting at 7pm. Anyone who joined this past year or any members who have never been initiated are welcome to attend and be initiated by our 9th District Staff. It is appropriate to wear all white for this ceremony. We will be serving some treats following the meeting. We look forward to seeing you all there. Don t forget our wonderful Annual Fashion Show and Tea on Saturday March 7th at 1pm. Ask any Officer for tickets, they are $7.00. Also, another fun event coming up is our St. Patrick s Balloon Bash on Sunday March 8th at 2pm. Be there or be square! Yours in Loyal Service, Bonnie Hatt 1st VP & Membership Chairman A Message From The Auxiliary, 2st Vice President I want to thank all the ladies for all of your support this year. Thanks to everyone that has helped with our coupon cutting and sorting, your time and effort is greatly appreciated. Our Tea and Fashion Show is March 7th, that is one of our Auxiliary s largest fund raisers. I hope that you will buy your tickets and bring some finger sandwiches. Buy a ticket for your friend s birthday, that person that does your hair or your nails, or just to thank someone and bring them along. Our next event is our annual Balloon Bash, we will also need some baked goods for that event. Thank you once again for all your support. Elaine Rafajko 2nd Vice President
