2 Fall Plant Sale Fundraiser Sept. 4 th through Oct. 22nd Please help us raise money for during this fun and crucial fundraising effort. At this time of the year, moves from the active summer season, to a slower pace time of year. However, we are in full swing of our annual fall plant sale. This year we have figs, blackberries, muscadines, and bunch grape plants for sale. We also have apple, peach, and pear trees for sale. We are really excited about the opportunity to offer bunch grape plants this year, as they have done unexpectedly well at our Buster Sykes Research Farm in Mebane. Many of the varieties of the listed plants for sale are currently growing at the Buster Sykes Research Farm. This 4-H sale tries to offer plants that are well suited for our area as well as some that boast surprising yields in the home landscape, if given the proper care. Don t worry, we have all the tips and tricks printed here at the office for when you pick up your plants. Buy some great local food producing plants this fall and help support! 3 Fair is in the Air! NC State Fair The North Carolina State Fair will be held October 11 th through the 21 st. Opportunities abound for 4-H at the State Fair! Alamance County will have dozens of 4-H youth participating at the fair. We have youth showing livestock, competing at the horse shows, showing market turkeys, and submitting their arts and crafts. I encourage you to check the website, ring/4hcompetition.html to learn how you too can participate at the fair this year. This time of year brings so many things; crisp air, changing leaves, football, and the NC State Fair! The state fair will be held the 3 rd and 4 th weeks of October at the State Fairgrounds in Raleigh. There are so many ways that 4-H youth can participate in the fair. From 4-H crafts and art project competitions, to entomology, livestock shows, flower shows, and more! I always look forward to visiting the fair and playing I spy by seeing how many ways I can see 4-H at the fair!

4 Volunteer Leader Training Thursday, Oct. 4 th 6:00-8:00pm Any current or aspiring 4-H volunteer should attend! We are really excited about our upcoming fall volunteer leader training being held on October 4 th. During this meeting, volunteers will learn all about our new 4-H Online registration system and how to officially enroll themselves and their 4-Hers. We will also discuss the basics of setting up and running a 4-H club, and the expectations of being a club leader. Finally, we will experience an activity that will be so fun and interactive, you won t be able to wait to take it back and teach your club! This training is part of the requirement for maintaining a 4-H club charter and should be attended by all current 4-H club leaders. This meeting will also be open to any youth or adult wishing to start their own 4-H club. We are excited to offer this training and look forward to everyone who can attend! 5 presents Project Record Book Party! September 27 th 6:00-7:30PM Everyone is encouraged to come and attend our Project Record Book party on Thursday, September 27 th from 6 to 7:30! Come one, come all, to work on your Project Record Books this fall! We will be having our Project Record Book party this year on Thursday, September 27 th, starting at 6:00pm. We will have stations set up so you can work on your project record book with other 4-H youth while also having access to several scrapbooking items and supplies. Taylor will be there to help look over books and give some tips and tricks before they are due in January. We will also have refreshments! We hope to have more PRBs than ever before this year so make plans to attend our party! Check out our flyer at

6 Dairy Photography Contest Winner We are excited to announce that Kassidy Rosalie Gantos is the winner of our Alamance County 4-H Dairy Photo Contest. Her entry will now be sent on to the State 4-H Dairy Photo Contest. Way to go Kassidy! Come by the 4-H office to claim your prize! When I decided to enter the photo contest I knew exactly what I wanted. The question was "How do you love your dairy?" I love to get kisses from my cows every day. That is how I wanted to show my love for my dairy...by showing my love of my dairy cows! What could be better than my sweet Quernsey, Claire, giving me Cow kisses? THAT is how I love my dairy! Kassidy Rosalie Gantos Central Piedmont Livestock Show Interest Meeting November 1 st beginning at 6:00pm There will be an interest meeting held on Thursday, November 1, 2018, at 6:00 pm in the Agriculture Building Auditorium located at 209-C N. Graham-Hopedale Rd. Burlington, NC. This meeting is to inform interested families of how 4-H livestock projects work, and about our main livestock show, the Central Piedmont Jr. Livestock Show held in April in Hillsborough, NC (as well as other show opportunities). At this interest meeting, we ll get into the nitty-gritty about how 4-H livestock projects work. We ll learn about animal project selection, animal care, and how to complete a PRB. Then we ll talk about CPLS show rules and how to register for the show. Please pre-register online here by 10/29:

7 National 4-H Week October 7 th through 13 th celebrates National 4-H Week During the week of October 7 th through the 13 th, will be celebrating National 4-H week in a variety of ways. Come help show support for Alamance County 4-H by visiting or volunteering to sell 4-H clovers at Tractor Supply in Burlington! 9 Southern Alamance Horse 4-H Club Report Every year, our Southern Alamance Horse Club (SAHC) competes in State Horsebowl and Hippology competition, which takes place in Raleigh in March. In April we compete in the State Horse Judging competition. These competitions are a lot of fun, but they re only on the state level. What comes next? Well, the next step is highly competitive. The top ten seniors from each category (horsebowl, hippology, and judging,) are invited to try out for the NC State team. Actually, there are two teams of four people for each category that get to go on to Southern Regionals Horse Competition in Perry, GA. This year the Southern Alamance Horse Club had five members trying out for the NC state teams! Cassandra Sigmon (me) and Caitlin Smith tried out for hippology, Abi Burgess and Reagan Riddell tried out for judging, and Abby Andrews tried out for horsebowl. For most people, these tryouts are a highschooler s nightmare. We had homework all summer long, plus several practices in Raleigh. Personally, I enjoy studying horses, so I liked it. We even had one practice where we got to dissect a horse s leg! That was pretty cool, (although the scalpels were too small.) S. Regionals took place in the first week of August, in Perry, Georgia. The six teams (and coaches and luggage) were all piled into two 15-passenger vans for the drive down. Even though it wasn t quite 24 teens, because several people were competing on two teams, you can imagine how crowded it was! We did a lot of studying on the drive down, and we studied for about 5 hours the next day. I personally really enjoyed S. Regionals, because I got to know some of the girls a lot better. At the hotel, I was put in a room with Abby Andrews, Abi Burgess, and a girl from another county. We had a lot of fun playing games, watching funny videos, and doing other things together. We sort of stuck together for the entire trip. They were the best roommates ever! Horsebowl and hippology competed on Wednesday, August 1. Caitlin, 2 other girls, and I (Cassandra) were on Team A. It was a very, very long day. I was the most nervous about how we would do on our team problem, which is when the team only has a few minutes to prepare and memorize an oral solution to a problem. When practicing, our team had consistently been too short in our presentation, and had missed vital information. However, at S. Regionals, we gave the best two team problems that we had ever given. I was (and still am) very proud of my team. After the hippology competiton finished, we hippology kids watched the horsebowl competition. Abby Andrews competed on Team B, so we were (silently) cheering her on. Both of the North Carolina teams steamrolled to the championships round. They played each other a total of three rounds before Team B finally rose victorious!

10 We hippology kids were still biting our nails in anticipation of our own results. We judged 4 classes on Thursday. The judging teams did 8, and had to give 4 sets of reasons. Finally, Thursday evening, the judging competition ended and we started preparing for the awards ceremony. At S. Regionals, before the awards ceremony can take place, there is a parade of the states. S. Regionals includes 13 states, from Virginia down to Florida and over to Texas. In the S. Regionals parade, each state has a flag or banner, and everybody competing from that state marches around the arena behind the banner. (We also got to throw little trinkets to the spectators.) At last, the award ceremony began. In hippology, Team A, with Caitlin and I, won everything except judging! Individually, Caitlin won 3 rd in stations and 8 th overall. I won 1 st in exam/id, 9 th in judging, 5 th in stations, and 1 st overall. The NC hippology Team B also came in 2 nd overall. In judging, Team B, with Abi and Reagan, won 1 st in halter, 4 th in performance, 5 th in reasons, and 3 rd overall. Individually, Abi won 12 th in halter and 18 th overall. Reagan won 5 th in halter, 6 th in performance, 6 th in reasons, and 3 rd overall. The NC Team A came in first overall, making North Carolina the winner in all three divisions. I am very proud of my club. Everybody did a great job, and our club won a big chunk of the ribbons at S. Regionals. Even more fantastic, Reagan, Caitlin, and I all made the cuts for the final NC teams that will go on to compete in both AQHA Congress and Eastern Nationals. The competition may be harder, but we are going for the blue ribbon!
