All orders must be received by March 4, Varieties available include: strawberries Atlas, blueberries Brightwell, Premier and Tifblue, blackberries Ouachita and Triple Crown and muscadines Cowart and Triumph. The cost for strawberry plants is 25 for $10, 50 for $15 and 100 for $20. The cost for blueberries, blackberries and muscadines is $9 each or $8 if five or more of the same variety are ordered. Call the Extension Office at to place your order today! County Council Meeting County Council will meet Thursday, March 12, to discuss plans for Achievement Night. All club officers, at-large members and club representatives are invited to attend. Dinner will begin at 6:30 p.m. with the meeting at 7 p.m. Call by Tuesday, March 10, if you plan to attend! Horse Safety Clinic Dr. Tim Potter, Extension s Area Equine Agent, will discuss safety issues relating to the equine industry in the Horse Safety Clinic on Tuesday, March 24, at 7 p.m. This clinic is free and open to anyone interested in learning about safely working with and around horses. The clinic will be held at the Rowan County Extension Office, 2727 Old Concord Road, Salisbury, NC, Call by Friday, March 20 if you plan to attend. RACE 4-H Meeting RACE 4-H will meet briefly on Tuesday, March 24, following the Horse Safety Clinic. At our last meeting, many dates were set regarding clinics, shows and workshops. This meeting will allow us to further plan those events. 2 WCD 4-H Horse Meeting The West Central District 4-H Horse Meeting will be held Thursday, March 26, at 7 p.m. This meeting will be held via videoconference. Come to the Rowan County Extension Office and meet with other volunteers around the district to discuss and plan district equine events. Call by Wednesday, March 25, if you plan to attend. Horse Judging Clinic Are you interested in horse judging? If so, the Horse Judging Clinic scheduled for Tuesday, April 7, from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. will help you get started. This clinic, taught by Dr. Tim Potter, Extension s Area Equine Agent, will help you prepare for a contest. This clinic is free and open to all youth interested in competing in horse judging. If you plan to attend, call by Friday, April 3. 4-H Speak Up! 4-H Speak Up! is a great way for you to practice your 4-H presentation or brush up on your public speaking skills. Cheryl Kane from Barton & Kane Consolidated will once again offer a great public speaking series for youth ages The dates are: April 13, 20, 27 and May 4 from 6:30 p.m. until 8 p.m. The cost for the series is $5. Operation: Military Kids Visual Arts Contest North Carolina 4-H s Operation: Military Kids program is proud and excited to announce the first OMK Photography and Arts Contest. The age categories are 5-8 years old, 9-10 years old, years old, years old and years old. The themes for the contest are Images of America, Spirit of Patriotism and Celebrating Our Soldiers Past and Present. All entries must be received by Wednesday, April 15, by 5 p.m. Trail Class Clinic This clinic will help you prepare to compete in a trail class at a horse show. Dr. Tim Potter, Extension s Area Equine Agent, will lead the clinic. Bring your horse and learn how to safely compete. The Trail Class Clinic will be held on Saturday, April 4. There will be two sessions available, one from 9 a.m. until 12 p.m. and one from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m. The cost is $15 per horse/rider OR $5 per auditor. There is a limit of 10 horse/rider participants per session. 4-H members must register by March 20 by calling Spaces not reserved and paid for by March 20 will be open to the public on March 23. Expressive Arts & Photo Contests Rowan County 4-H will once again be sponsoring an Expressive Arts Contest and a County Photo Contest. All entries are due by Wednesday, April 15, by 5 p.m. Be working on those entries! Equine Artistic Expression and Creative Writing Contests The NC 4-H Equine Artistic Expression and Creative Writing Contests entry deadlines are Friday, May 1, The categories for entries in Artistic Expression are: drawing, painting, poster, crafts, sewing and photography.

3 4-H Centennial Celebration at the Ballpark! Don t miss the BIGGEST 4-H event in 100 years! Come out and support your county s 4-H club and enjoy a night at the brand new Winston-Salem ballpark on Friday, June 5, at 7 p.m. Help us to celebrate 100 years of 4-H with clubs from all across the region. A pre-game on-field parade (including 4-H ers) begins at 6 p.m. Tickets are $10 each, and the price includes a souvenir team hat! The deadline to order tickets is April 30. Contact Patrick Riley at x 1108, or at patrick.riley@wsdash.com to reserve your tickets. 4-H Investigates Day Camp Who Killed Henry Ward? Participants will become detectives and determine who killed Henry Ward in a hit-and-run car accident almost 100 years ago. Solve this crime by exploring various techniques including blood typing, forensic anthropology, fingerprint analysis, impression analysis for tires and shoes, hair analysis, blood spatter and DNA evidence. Space is limited, so call TODAY! This workshop is open to youth grades 6-8. The day camp will be held June at East Wilkes Middle School. Transportation, meals and snacks are provided. The cost is $35. (Parents, be advised that field trips will include the Surry County Jail, a funeral home and the Elkin Animal Diagnostics Lab.) West Central District Holds 4-H Horse Bowl Competition The West Central District 4-H Horse Bowl Contest was held Saturday, January 24, 2009 at the Caldwell County Extension Office. This contest allows 4-H members to use their knowledge of horses and related subject matter to compete on a four-member team. They display their knowledge in a competitive and friendly atmosphere. Teams are divided according to age into three categories: junior, mixed (with both junior and senior members) and senior. Rowan County had one team participate in the event. The members of our mixed team were Micah Furr, Alex Hipp, Savanah Hipp, Trilby Kirk and Taylor Pence. The team was coached by 4-H leaders Ann Furr and Lisa Wagner. The Mixed Team placed 5 th in the district. Great Job!!!! Volunteer Corner Pet Treat Fundraiser Rowan County 4-H will again be selling 4-H Pet Treats. If your club is interested in this fundraiser, contact Sara at for all order forms and information. All orders must be received by Wednesday, April 15. Instructors for Summer Fun Needed We are fast approaching summer and that means 4-H Summer Fun! If you would like to teach a workshop, or know someone who would, please let me know as soon as possible. You can download a 4-H Summer Fun Class Proposal from the 4-H website or stop by the office for a copy.

4 Club Spotlight What is Club Spotlight? This section of the newsletter is devoted to 4-H club news. Club reporters should submit club news to the 4-H office after each meeting. This information will be spotlighted in the 4-H newsletter each month. Call the 4-H Office if you need more 4-H Club Reporter forms. REMEMBER TO SEND IN YOUR CLUB REPORT NC Kids The NC Kids 4-H club met at the Agricural Center on February 5, We decorated notebooks to be used as our Project Record Books. After we had decorated our notebooks, we wrote down some ideas of what we would like to do this year to help us learn more about our environment. At the end of the meeting, we elected officers. Nicholas Barlow became our new President with Zane Oliphant our new Vice President. Tripp Oliphant was elected as Secretary. Ian Nettles became our Reporter and Matthew Smith was elected Treasurer. Ian Nettles Reporter East Equine Explorers Micah Furr called the meeting to order. We thanked Sara Drake for the 4-H 100th birthday party. Micah, Dr. Ann, Savanah, Alex, Mrs. Hipp and Mrs. Lisa went to a horse judging clinic in Raleigh and reported they learned a lot. Sara Drake announced the plant sale. Taylor Pence did her two minute talk on different uses of horses and had an excellent poster. Courtney Wagner did a great job explaining "choke" in horses. Savanah Hipp received her 4-H hat. For the program, Mrs. Hipp told us about the project record book. Regan Bell Isenberg Clever Clovers The Isenberg Clever Clovers met on February 11 to create Valentine's day cards for the Brian Center and began planning for future events. We shall meet on Wednesday, March 18, from 3-5 p.m. and create terrariums and St. Patrick's Day decorations along with other items for the nursing home. Future events include a Saturday outing at Dan Nicholas Park for fishing, gem mining, petting zoo and just clean fun. Parents and volunteers are encouraged to assist with the upcoming events at our site. Sharon Still

5 Shive Green Team The Shive Green Team has 3 new members - Karlyn Dwinell, Rebekah Barnhardt and Alana Miller. They are all working on the Exploring the Treasures of 4-H project. Most of our members completed a project and submitted it for judging by the end of January. We are discussing a possible landscape or bird feeder project to do at our school. We are still looking for a club to teach us about the basics of horse care. Sharon Ingold Dirty Jeans 4-H Horse Club We are a new club that meets at Coddle Creek Ranch every other Saturday at 4 p.m. Our leaders are Jeff Saunders and Colleen Cheek. These are pictures taken at our meeting. Sara Walser did a presentation on horse show preparation. She showed us how to groom a horse and we did hands on grooming. Our next meeting is Saturday, March 7, at 4 p.m. Joey Bullock
