It has been a long, hot, really hot summer with a couple of weeks of monsoon type weather. Did I mention that we missed all of you! The maintenance guys and O Leary Construction, supervised by George O Leary, have been working extremely hard to make the park look beautiful. They have done major upgrades both at ground level and underground on the boulevard. The underground work is preventive maintenance. I am sure you have noticed the flowers and new shrubs that have been planted after installing a better irrigation system. Lots and lots of hours were spent by our hard working guys. The ladies in the office, Sue, Wendy, Annette and Doreen have been extremely busy with all kinds of upgrades in the Recreation Buildings. You will note that there are now ceramic tile floors in both Class Rooms, Coffee Room, Arts & Sewing, and both Card Rooms. Yes, we now have a second Card and Game Room. The new room is located on the north side of the building in what was previously the TV Lounge. All of these rooms have new tables and chairs. (2 1/2 cushions). Our favorite housekeeping girls have been busy cleaning every room, no easy job with all the construction dust. They also washed every blue folding chair that we own in addition to unwrapping all of the plastic from around the arms and legs of about 150 new chairs. Great job Imelda, Claudia and Clara! Dean Chivington did an exceptional job of assembling all of the tables inside and out. Thanks Dean. The rooms have all been painted and most have new ceiling fans. The outside of the building has also been painted this summer. Have you seen the Library? Roger Larson sanded and refinished all of the book shelves and a wonderful group of Volunteers cleaned all the books and put them back on the shelves. You will also note that we have beautiful new laminate floors and gorgeous tables in the Library. Card players, wait until you see the new poker tables for cards and games. Ron Petry and Roger Larson have been busy in the Wood Shop making these awesome tables. Sue and I will have the dubious honor of covering them. Our new Assistant Activity Director, Nicole, helped Sue and I put new names on the room windows. I almost forgot, check out the restroom between the Recreation Hall and the Auditorium. They are gorgeous! Well that should bring you up to date with the work, NOW let s have some fun. Doreen

All sizes, shapes and breeds are welcome to enter this fun event. It should be a real hoot to see all the RCW Canines dressed in their Howl-O-Ween finest. So, bring on the witches, goblins, fairies, ghosts and pirates (or whatever costume your dog prefers) and let s have some fun. All residents are welcome to watch the parade, but the treats will only be for the dogs. Watch for a flyer in your mailbox with all the details. Entry forms will be put in the mail boxes of each family in the pet section or pick one up in the Activity Office. Deadline for entries is 3pm on Thursday, Oct. 27. See you on Friday, Oct. 28th at 10:00 am. Music will be provided by Two s Company again this year and tickets are just $6.00. Doors open at 7:00 pm. Remember you are welcome to bring your own beverages and snacks. Costumes are optional but we hope you will join the fun by dressing up! Feel free to make your costume, reuse a costume, buy one, or search for something great at the thrift store! We can t wait to see what you come up with! Prizes will be awarded for the funniest, scariest and most unusual costumes.

4 WINE TASTING Another season of toasting the fruits of the vines is here. For the first tasting on October 23rd (4:00pm Sunday), bring your glasses and munchies as usual. Do not buy a ticket. Just go out and get a bottle of wine or take one from under the bed or in the closet. We hope to have great fun tasting each other s choices. This is a onetime only event. If you are just one (solo, single, whatever) get a friend to share the cost of the wine. We do not want to have too much wine!!! Questions? Between concerts, romantic entanglements and old demons threaten to derail them all. Come and join us in the Auditorium on Friday, October 21st at 7:00 pm. PIZZA PARTY Pizza on a Friday night? It doesn t get much better than that! Join us Friday, October 28th at 5pm in the Auditorium for a Pizza Party! Tickets are just $7.00 and includes pizza and soda! Purchase your ticket in the Activity Office by 3:00pm on Thursday, October 27th. Sure you can bring your own adult beverage after all... it s a party! 4 NAME BADGE Reminder!! Please remember to wear your name badges! Nicole has a lot of new names to learn and is looking forward to meeting everyone. If you don t have a name badge, please swing by the main office to order one. They are $2.00 (+tax) each and it comes with a pin. If you prefer a magnet, it is an additional $3.00 (+tax) charge. I M OK Here at RCW we want to make sure you are A- OK! The I m Okay Club is a program for people living alone. This is just a daily check-in by phone that allows us to make sure you are OK. Please stop by the Activity Office to sign up! We look forward to seeing you! FLU SHOTS Flu shots will be offered in the park again this year on November 11th in the Auditorium. Appointments begin at 10am. Make sure to schedule your appointment in the Activity Office. Without insurance the flu shot costs $25.00 and the pneumonia is $ Some medical insurance companies will cover the shot. 5 MEDICARE WORKSHOP To get clear answers to your Medicare questions, come for an informal Medicare workshop. We are the Q & A Group, and our main focus is guiding seniors through the Medicare maze. We are NOT tied to any one Medicare insurance carrier. Instead we are independent benefit advisors with 30 years of experience behind us. Come join us for answers to your questions. You ll be glad you did. GASLIGHT THEATER Christmas in the Big Apple We reserved tickets for the Christmas show in December! If you are interested save the date! There will be a sign up sheet in the Activity Office. Tickets are $ The show will be on Monday, November 28 at 3:00pm. Doors open at 2:15pm. Date: Wed. October, 26 th Time: 9:00 am ROSEBOWL PARADE Are you interested in going to the Rosebowl Parade? We will have information in the Activity Office that includes times, adgenda and phone numbers to make your reservations. Make sure you reserve a time soon! NICOLE PERRI I would like to introduce Nicole Perri to the Residents of RCW. Nicole will be our new Assistant Activity Director starting this season. Nicole hails from Cleveland, Ohio and only recently moved to Tucson and met her boyfriend, Brandon. They have now purchased a new home and have been working really hard to settle in. We all know about moving and updating things. Good luck! She received her Bachelor s degree from the University of Toledo and has completed her Masters degree from the University of Arizona. Her past employment was as a Kindergarten teacher. Please take the time to stop in the Activity Office and introduce yourself to Nicole and make her welcome. Please wear your name badge! 5 THANK YOU Did you notice the new maps on the wall in the Coffee Room? Give a big thank you to Maxine Gruner who took the time to make several trips around town to have new maps laminated and mounted. Thank you Maxine, we appreciate you. Doreen THANK YOU Roger Larson and Ron Petry have done an outstanding job building new poker tables. These two guys have spent many hours working in the Wood Shop so that all you card carrying card players can test your expertise and strategies for winning your favorite cards and games. Sue Scott and I will be putting the speed felt on the table tops, We are pretty sure the cards will slide nicely accross the table. 6 THANK YOU Our Decorators are at work already. Pat Smith, Theron Smith, Steve Douglass and Beckey Douglass are working in the Auditorium under the title of down with the old and up with the new. They have taken down last year s mural and will be putting up a new one soon. That is a big job but they sure make it look easy. Thanks to all of you. Pat has been painting and working on the walls in the Auditorium. Thanks Pat. Halloween decorations will be going up very soon. If you would like to help with the decorating, please stop in the Activity Office and we will hook you up with the right people. Thanks again to the Decorators for making the Auditorium so beautiful. Hall All other classes are in the Auditorium. Marshall Flippo, ROUND DANCING Dancing We are happy to welcome Ronnie and Bonnie Bond back to Rincon Country West. They will have a full Round Dance schedule of classes and dancing. They will also have a ballroom dance class. Watch for their schedule in November. The first class will begin on Monday, Nov. 7 at 12:00pm for PH 2-3. PH 4 workshop is at 2:00pm and PH 4-5 and a touch of PH6 at 6:30pm. 7 Clubs HIKING CLUB For those of us who love hiking, there s nothing more inviting than the many trails through the canyons and valleys all around Tucson and beyond! Join us on Thursday mornings you are guaranteed to enjoy great views and lots of memories while getting a terrific workout. Early mornings may be cool but can warm up quickly so make sure to wear layers to maintain comfort. Good hiking footwear, walking sticks, water and a snack are strongly recommended. If you don t wish to drive your own vehicle, you may join other drivers; you will be asked to share the cost of gas. Our new hiking season begins on Thursday, October 27, We meet in Classroom 1 at 7:15 am. and leave at 7:30 am. The proposed (but changeable) list of hikes for October and November is included below. A complete and more detailed list of hikes for the fall is posted outside the Recreation Office. Oct. 27: Sweetwater Preserve (Easy ) Gas charge: $5 Nov. 3: Green Mountain (Easy ) Gas charge: $7 Nov. 10: Bogs & Kent Springs (Moderatedifficult) Gas charge: $8 Nov. 17: Ventana Canyon (Moderate) Gas charge: $5 Nov. 24: Prospector s (Difficult ) Gas charge: $5 STRETCHING The stretching/flexibility group will begin on October 20 under the leadership of Gary Johnson. The group meets each morning, Monday through Friday, at 7:15am in the Auditorium. The exercise follows an audio CD. Please bring a mat or towel and plan on 25 minutes of healthy exercise. Everyone is welcome. 7 TOPS TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) is a non-profit organization designed to help men and women take off pounds sensibly and to keep off pounds sensibly. Come look us over and possibly join us for weekly learning, support and fun concerning nutrition, portion control, food choices, etc. We have a group here at RCW that meets every Monday morning in Card Room 2. The meeting starts at 7:30am with weigh-in for members at 7:00am. Officers begin weigh-in at 6:45 am. See you there. Joy Fehrenz LOW IMPACT AEROBICS Welcome back. Are you settled in at RCW and feel that you might like a bit of exercise to keep your body in good working order? How about aerobics for seniors? Just what we can all use. No signing up, fancy clothes or expensive equipment. Just show up in comfortable clothes Monday through Thursday with your 2 or 3 pound weights, and on Wednesdays bring your weights plus a stretch band. We will be starting the season in the Rec. Hall on Tuesday, November 1, 2011, at 7:45 am. until 8:45 am. This will be a great start to your day and will give you added energy. Come join us. Sue Charlot:

8 TABLE TENNIS Come get some good exercise and fellowship every Sunday, Tuesday, and Friday in the Rec Hall, from 1:00-3:00pm. We welcome all comers, good at the game or wanting to learn. No equipment necessary we have it all. Ned Bell: GOLF Now that we are back at RCW, lets talk golf. Our season will begin on October 17 th at Canoa Ranch. Our first Thursday group will be at Torres Blancas on October 20 th. As usual, we will meet on Wednesday in the Rec Hall at 5:30 pm. I hope to have the sign up-sheet in the Coffee Room on Monday, October 17 th. I am looking forward to a fun filled year and seeing old friends. Hit em far and straight! Pat Mulvaney CREATIVE SCRIBES Tell it like it was or at least how you remember it. We all have stories to tell memories of your childhood, school days, college, career, siblings, older generations, your children, friends, or events. What about the firsts in your life? Your first car, job, vacation, RV trip (or your first attempts, successful or otherwise) at driving, skiing, sky diving, cooking, or painting. Nevermind the bucket list try making a list of the times once is enough. It s amazing the insight you can gain into yourself by writing your story. It s surprising what others (like your grandchildren or great grandchildren) can learn about you not only from what you remember, but how you tell the story. Come join us every Wednesday from 1:00pm to 3:00pm in Class Room 2. It s not only fun, it s enlightening and worthwhile. Hear other peoples stories and share yours. Help is available, as little or as much as you want. No class fees are involved. After all, the best things in life are free. If you have questions, call: Marilyn Cass: Nov-April Terry O Brien: Jan-March NEEDLEWORK Knitting, Crocheting, etc. The first meeting of the Needlework group will be on Wednesday, October 19th in the Sewing room from 1:00 to 3:00 pm. We ll be meeting every Wednesday afternoon at that time all season. If you have started a project which involves knitting, crocheting, embroidery, sewing, or any kind of needlework, join us for a couple of hours of sociability while you work. Drop by the Sewing Room on that afternoon to see what interesting projects are being worked on. Any questions, call. Adeline Bailey: POTTERY AND CERAMICS Ceramics are poured, molded items. Jan Mulvaney helps you choose and pour your piece on Tuesdays at 9:00am. Then on the next day, Wednesday, she will help you remove your piece from the mold and clean it to be ready for firing. After firing you may decorate your own way with glazes. And almost magically you will have your own china! Pottery is a slightly different process. We start with wet clay and mold it with our fingers into whatever. Judy Fried is in the room on Thursdays at 9:00am for anyone with some experience with clay. Classes for beginners are given at 1:15pm on Thursdays. Come in for fun! Judy Fried:

9 SOLOS We welcome all returning singles and single new comers to our park. If you are single and would like to meet other singles with the same desire for friendship, join us on the first and third Sunday in the Recreation Hall. We hope everyone had a great summer and that you are ready to have a fantastic fall. Our first gathering of the season will be a Pot Luck held on Sunday, October 16th at 5:00pm. Please bring a dish (for 10 people) to share and a beverage of your choice. Coffee and tea will be available. See you in the Rec Hall. Carl Stubbington: VILLAGEAIRES Do you know someone who likes to sing? Our Villageaires Chorus will start preparing for our December Christmas Holiday concert on Tuesday November 1st. We are fortunate to have our talented director, Al Wortman with us again, along with his gifted wife Betty accompanying us. We meet Tuesdays from 9:00-11:00am in the Rally Room with sectional practices sometimes lasting until noon. Come join the fun! For more information call: Leah Murphy: Mary E. Hallesy: LIBRARY THANK YOU For all residents who use the Library, you are in for a special treat. Not only do you have new floors, ceiling fans, tables and chairs but some of the best Volunteers worked their hearts out for you. Roger Larson refinished all the shelving units, moved them out of the room and reinstalled them. Thanks Roger! The following Volunteers did an absolutely fantastic job. They moved the books to the Auditorium and later back to the Library at which time they washed each and every book before placing them back on the shelf. Doreen Clare McNaughton Don McNaughton Jan Anders 60TH 1951 HIGH SCHOOL Class Reunion All Schools All Rincon Country West folks from any state/province school, class of 1951, are welcome to celebrate our 60th class reunion on November 14, 2011 at 8:30 am at Kennedy Park by the lake. Bring yearbooks, pictures and music. Every few years, as autumn time nears, An announcement arrives in the mail, A 1951 reunion is planned; It ll be really grand; Make plans to attend without fail. I ll never forget the first time we met; We tried so hard to impress. We drove fancy cars, smoked big cigars, And wore our most elegant dress. At our next get-together, no one cared whether They impressed their classmates or not. The mood was informal, a whole lot more normal; By this time we d all gone to pot. By the fiftieth year, it was abundantly clear, We were definitely over the hill. Those who weren t dead had to crawl out of bed, And be home in time for their pill. And now I can t wait; they ve set the date; Our 60th is coming, it s nigh. Repairs have been made on my hearing aid; And I ve bought a new wig and glass eye. I m feeling quite hearty, and I m ready to party I m gonna dance til dawn s early light. It ll be lots of fun; But I just hope There s one other person who can make it that night! Bring a breakfast snack to share and your thermos of coffee, tea, or??. Also, bring memories of those school years for reminiscing.
