Ensembles of the Martin County HS Band The State of Florida Department of Education policy requires that participation in any Band or Guard performance beyond school hours be limited to students who maintain at least a 2.0 GPA I. The Tiger Regiment The Tiger Regiment is the marching ensemble comprised of the combined Concert bands, drum line, and color guard. It is the most visual ensemble at MCHS and prides itself on excellent performance, attention to detail, community involvement, and traditions. The Tiger Regiment performs at all home football games as well as numerous parades and assemblies. All members enrolled in band, percussion, or guard classes at Martin County High School are required to participate in the Tiger Regiment. Performances and co curricular rehearsals are required and are graded. Auditions for drum major, drum line, and color guard are held every spring. Interested students should contact Mr. Holoweiko for more information. I. Concert Band The Concert Band typically consists of the younger members in the MCHS band program and aims to refine and enhance instrumental technique and musical performance. Through varied repertoire and performing opportunities, members of the concert band will grow as musicians and learn the importance of being prepared and confident members of a team. All students are strongly encouraged to take private lessons with qualified teachers in the area. Members of the Concert Band are also encouraged to participate in solo and ensemble festival and recitals. II. Symphonic Band Symphonic Band consists of the most advanced students at Martin County High School. The Symphonic Band performs multiple concerts throughout the year as well as represents MCHS in Florida Bandmasters Association assessments and other festivals. All students are strongly encouraged to take private lessons with qualified teachers in the area. Members of the Symphonic Band are also encouraged to participate in solo and ensemble festival and recitals. III. Jazz Band The Jazz Band provides new and unique musical experiences outside of the traditional classical music classroom. Members of Jazz Band must be enrolled in one of the concert ensembles in order to participate. Jazz Band meets as part of the curriculum as a class for credit before school. Participation in any ensemble may be revoked at the discretion of the Director at any time. 5
Concert Uniforms Symphonic Band Men Issued tuxedo jacket, pants, black bowtie, and black cummerbund. Students will be responsible for providing their own black dress shoes and black socks. You must supply your own clean and pressed white tux shirt to be worn under the jacket. Women Issued concert dress. Students will be responsible for providing their own black dress shoes. Flip-flops and shoes that resemble flip-flops are not allowed. Concert band Men Black dress shirt, black dress pants, black dress shoes, and black socks. Women Black top, black bottom (pants or LONG black skirt), black shoes. Jazz Band To be determined at rehearsal. Additional Uniform Information No unusually large necklaces, earrings, bracelets, or large rings are to be worn with the concert uniform. Conservative jewelry is acceptable. See Mr. Holoweiko if you have questions. Unnatural hair color is prohibited for performances. Those with unnatural hair color will not be permitted to perform. The concert uniforms should be pressed before every performance. Tuxes should be dry cleaned periodically. Anyone who does not abide by the uniform policies will not be allowed to perform. Marching Uniforms The Tiger Regiment uniform identifies you as a band member and a representative of our school and community. It is to be worn with pride and class and must ONLY be worn at authorized appearances and must ALWAYS be worn properly. Our visual performance as an ensemble must be as effective as our musical impact. It is the responsibility of the student to have his/her marching uniform dry cleaned before each home football game. Please keep the uniform clean and pressed! Note: Some uniform rules have changed from last year. 6
REQUIRED: ALL STUDENTS MUST WEAR THE MARCHING BAND POLO/TSHIRT UNDER THE UNIFORM FOR GAMES. We will determine which one we are wearing on a week to week basis. The adjustable chinstrap must be worn at all times when the hat is on. It must be adjusted so that the hat does not fall down over your eyes and does not slide off the back of your head. The hat must NEVER be worn backwards. If/when we take our hats off in the stands, we will do so as a group. All wind players are required to wear clean, white gloves for each performance. If your gloves become dirty, it is your responsibility to replace them. All members must wear tall, black socks with the marching uniform. NO EXCEPTIONS. Shoes should be cleaned prior to all performances. Marching Band Performance Grooming To ensure unity and uniformity as an ensemble, the following regulations must be strictly adhered to: Hair must be worn off the collar of the jacket and behind the ears. All hair should be put up in a way so that it does not fall down when the hat is taken off. You will be asked to fix your hair if it does not meet protocol, which means you may miss part of a performance. You are responsible to making sure your hair stays up off the collar for the entire time you are in uniform. Facial hair is strongly discouraged. If you choose to have facial hair it must be well trimmed and groomed. Cosmetics (mascara, lip stick, eye makeup, etc.) and Jewelry (earrings, bracelets, watches, etc.) will not be worn in uniform. Sunglasses will be allowed to worn upon the Director s instruction to do so in the stands but never on the field. The Drum Major and Section Leaders will inspect all members prior to all performances. The uniform must be worn in its entirety unless otherwise noted by the Director. 7
Rehearsals and Performances All performances and extra rehearsals are co-curricular and are required. Failure to attend mandatory performances and rehearsal without advance notice to Mr. Holoweiko or a properly filed and approved excuse form may result in removal from the ensemble, a loss of performance privilege, or a make-up assignment. Excuse forms are due on August 21, During the course of our school year, there may be additional performances that are not currently listed on the performance page of this handbook. Students with an excusable reason for missing one of these performances must submit an excuse form (available in the band office) at least 2 weeks prior to the performance date. The director reserves the right to remove a student from a marching performance at any time if that student becomes a visual liability to the ensemble. A visual liability is defined as a student who is unable to march and play the halftime show precisely and effectively. This includes (but is not limited to) students who cannot appropriately and independently march their coordinate and/or play their music or students who have attendance issues. Marching Band Rehearsals Students in the Martin County High School bands perform at all home games as well as select away games. All football performances are required of band students and attendance is not optional. Note: If a regularly scheduled football game must be postponed and rescheduled due to unforeseen events, the Tiger Regiment will be expected to perform at the rescheduled game. Students and parents should be aware of this possibility and plan accordingly. The same circumstances may happen to rehearsals and students should expect a make-up rehearsal to take place as to make up for lost time. The Director will do his best to give advance notice. Marching band rehearsals take place entirely outside of class time. Marching rehearsals are scheduled for Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:00pm to 8:30 pm during football season and several morning rehearsals. Sectionals may be included in the rehearsal time and are not optional. Students must be ready to START with all equipment and properly warmed up at 6:00pm. Rehearsal will go to 8:30 so with packing up students will typically not be available for pick up until around 8:45pm. All students must wear a solid white t-shirt to every marching band rehearsal with black athletic shorts. The t-shirt cannot have any sort of logo on it. A uniformed band performs uniformly! 8
In the case of inclement weather, it may be necessary to call a Wednesday rehearsal or a Friday non-school day rehearsal. Students are required to have rain ponchos at all outdoor rehearsals. Do not drink dairy products prior to marching rehearsals. Close-toed athletic shoes must be worn at all rehearsals. Vibram or five-finger shoes are not allowed. Concert Bands Concert band rehearsal starts 2 minutes after the scheduled beginning of class. You must be within the Band Room before the scheduled beginning of class. If you re not, you re tardy. Excessive tardiness at rehearsals will result in a lowering of your grade and possible removal from concerts. Please check the board at the beginning of rehearsal for the rehearsal order and have your music in order, ready to go. This will help us capitalize on valuable class time. General Rehearsal Regulations We function on limited rehearsal time. In order to be the best that we can, it is important to be prepared and willing to work. Working as a team and abiding by all the rules set forth in the handbook will help us to maximize our potential. Please do not use cell phones during rehearsals. Cell phones will be confiscated and taken to the Dean. If you feel you may be tempted to use yours, leave it in your locker. You are expected to be on time. Concert rehearsal starts 2 minutes after the tardy bell. Plan accordingly and take care of personal business between classes, not during it. Have all materials at each rehearsal. This includes a pencil, music in order of what is on the board, charts for marching band, instruments, etc. Even when music is memorized we will constantly be making adjustments and changes. You must always have a pencil. You can make a pencil without music, but you can t make music without a pencil. Keep all of your equipment stored in your band locker. Locker contents are visible. Anyone using a locker should have his/her own combination lock with the combination stored in a safe, memorable place. MCHS is not responsible for equipment taken from un-secured lockers. Respect other peoples property. 9
There is no food or drink in rehearsal. Water is always fine, but please dispose of empty water bottles when finished. Percussion equipment is only to be used by percussionists. All percussion equipment is to be covered and organized at the end of rehearsal. Please leave the band room clean and neat this includes storage areas and practice rooms. Chairs and music stands set up for rehearsal are not to be disturbed. If you need to borrow a chair or a stand, please return it when you are finished. Music Students are responsible for any music passed out or assigned to them. Lost original parts (not copies) need to be replaced from the publisher by the student. The standard cost for concertsized music is $5.00 (this includes the shipping cost from the publisher). When marking your music, use pencil only. Music is to be kept in the folders provided. Folders are to be kept in your band locker. The photocopier is for band copying only. Rights ATTENDANCE (Taken from the school policy) No student will be denied the opportunity to attend or to participate in the educational program of the Martin County School system because of race, creed, color, sex, or national origin. RESPONSIBILITIES Under the compulsory attendance laws of the State of Florida, students have the responsibility to take advantage of their educational opportunity by attending all classes daily and on time, unless circumstances beyond their control prevent them from doing so. Unless an absence is excused or occurs without the parent s knowledge, consent or convenience, parents are subject to legal action and/or to being reported to the Department of Children and Families for neglect if students are not in regular attendance. It is the responsibility of each student s parent or guardian to notify and to explain the student s absence to the attendance office no later than the first day of the student s return to school. Failure to do so by the tenth day will result in the absence being considered unexcused. 10
Acceptable reasons for an excused absence are as follows: 1. Illness of the student (A doctor s statement may be required.) 2. An accident resulting in bodily injury to the student. 3. A death in the immediate family of the student. 4. An observance of an established religious holiday in line with the recorded specific faith of the student. 5. A subpoena by a law enforcement agency or a court appearance. 6. Principal-approved participation in academic, vocational, or non-vocational activities. 7. Insurmountable conditions as defined by regulations of the state board and determined by the principal. 8. As otherwise determined by the principal in accordance with state laws and School Board rules. A physician or other licensed medical provider s certification is required when a student is absent for three or more consecutive school days (of course, absences for participation in schoolsponsored events are excluded) or when a student is absent nine or more cumulative school days within any ninety calendar day period. Failure to provide such certification by the tenth day will result in the absence being considered unexcused. Students must be in regular attendance if they are to derive benefits from such important educational activities as lectures, special instruction and individual help in skill development, group discussion, spontaneous dialogue between teacher and students, reports presented by other students, audio-visual presentations, special guest speakers and resource people. When this type of work is missed, in most instances, work cannot be made up adequately. Alternate assignments must be given to absent students in order for them to learn the material missed. Students have the responsibility to request ALL make-up assignments. ATTENDANCE A student must attend 90% of the days of each class in order to receive a credit for the term. Absences in excess of 9 unexcused days in a term may lead to failure if a competency test is given and the student fails to demonstrate competency. The Florida Compulsory Attendance Law states that a student must attend school until he/she is 16 years of age. Students and parents need to be aware that because of in-school activities, field trips, visits to the school nurse, etc. the number of absences may vary from class to class. This includes participation in athletic events, cultural events, practices and rehearsals, fund-raising activities, etc. A student must attend school the day of a scheduled extra-curricular activity in which he/she is participating. If the activity occurs on the weekend, the student must attend school the Friday before the activity. It is the student's responsibility to keep track of the number of absences in each class. 11
Attendance requirements cont Members of the band program at Martin County High School must attend all official functions by the band. Official functions are required and graded. Official functions include, but are not limited to, the following: 1. Concerts 2. Adjudicated Festivals, Contests and Assessments 3. Scheduled Football Games, both home and away 4. Parades 5. Out of town performances (including those which require fund raising &/or fees) 6. Dress Rehearsals for performances and guest artist workshops 7. Assembly programs, Concerts, or other performances during the school day 8. Co curricular rehearsals, whether after school, evenings, or weekends Note: School-sponsored or personal events, which arise during the school year that conflict with the published performance dates as stated in this handbook will not be excused. I ask that you be flexible with the calendar as things will change and shift periodically. Please check back to the calendar as listed on CHARMS frequently for updates. Excuse forms are due August 21, Grading Grades are based on the Martin County High School 100 point grading scale and will be awarded based on the following criteria: Performances - 50% All concert, festival, and marching performances. In addition, Tuesday and Thursday evening marching band rehearsals, and special concerts that have required student attendance are counted as performance grades. Auditions/Performance Exams 30% Auditions will take place in the spring of each year to audition possible placement in the concert bands for the following year. Students will be asked to perform graded playing tests on concert and marching music throughout the year at the Director s discretion. 12
Auditions will typically consist of the following: 1) Assigned etudes given by Mr. Holoweiko 2) Sight-reading material to be given by Mr. Holoweiko 3) Selected scales Auditions are required for everyone who chooses to be in the MCHS band program. Performance exams may take place at any point in the year and will generally consist of music from the folder. Students may re-take performances exams one time to earn a higher grade. The final performance grade for the exam if a re-take is completed will be an average of the two performance grades. Rehearsal Procedures/Written Homework 20% Rehearsal Procedures This includes being prepared for each rehearsal with your instrument, music, mutes/accessories, and a pencil. Your participation will also count toward your grade under this category. Any unexcused tardy will impact your rehearsal procedure grade. Written Homework Students will be required to complete 2 concert critiques throughout the course of each semester. The concert critique must be at least 2 pages in length (double-spaced, size 12 Times New Roman font) and should be a reflection on a concert that you are not participating in. This could range from a symphony orchestra concert to a neighboring high school band concert. If you are unsure if a concert qualifies for a critique, ask Mr. Holoweiko for clarification. Topics in the critique can be about intonation, technique, musical selection, etc. You will be graded on grammar, punctuation, and spelling as well as content. Students will also have a written exam at the end of each semester that reviews concepts we have discussed in class (defining musical terms, discussing musical concepts we have covered during rehearsal, basic music theory, etc.) Note: Mr. Holoweiko may assign other written homework at his discretion. High School Grading Scale = A 80-89=B 70-79=C 60-69=D 0-59=F 13
Make-up Assignments As per school policy, students who have an excused absence from a band class or co-curricular activity have the right to request a make-up assignment. It is the responsibility of the student to ask for a make-up assignment and complete it within the time allowed by school policy, which is: 1 day to make arrangements for make-up work and 1 day for each absence is allowed for make-up of missed class work. Make-up work will not be accepted late. As stated before, excessive absences and being tardy frequently may result in a lowering of your grade, suspension from a performance, or removal from the program. Athletic/Extracurricular Activities Most conflicts between extra-curricular activities and band can be avoided, or alleviated, when pre-planning is done, and advance notice is given. It is critical for you to compare your activity s schedule with the band calendar in advance. When a conflict is unavoidable, the two events will be weighted for importance. For example, a band performance would outweigh an extracurricular practice/rehearsal. An athletic game would outweigh a band rehearsal. Alcohol and Drug Policy The possession, consumption, and distribution of alcohol or drugs by the members of this organization at any Martin County High School band event is strictly prohibited. The Martin County High School band will not tolerate alcohol or other drugs at any school sponsored activity (i.e., bus trips, rehearsals, etc.). Any violation of this policy may result in expulsion from the Martin County High School band in addition to any discipline administered by the school district s administration. Hazing and Harassment Policy The Martin County High School Band believes that a positively functioning student organization is nurtured by an atmosphere of social and moral responsibility, respect for authority, and loyalty to the principles of higher education. The Martin County High School Band further believes that, despite the fact that much progress has been made, one of the most damaging agents in any school environment is hazing. This unproductive and hazardous custom has no rightful place in education. The Martin County High School Band defines hazing as any action taken or situation created which is intentionally designed to produce mental or physical discomfort, embarrassment, harassment, or ridicule. Such activities and actions include: creation of excessive fatigue; physical or psychological abuse; wearing apparel which is not in good taste; engaging in public 14
stunts, morally degrading or humiliating games and activities, and any other activities which are not consistent with policies of the organization or rules and regulations. The use of degrading names in the Martin County High School Band is STRICTLY PROHIBITED. Nicknames are not an official part of the Tiger Regiment. It is important to be aware that the use of degrading nicknames could be considered a form of hazing and could be found offensive by some members. Any violation with the Martin County High School Band Hazing Policy will result in a meeting with Mr. Holoweiko. An immediate dismissal may be issued to any student in violation with this policy. Mr. Holoweiko, the band officers, section leaders and individual members will monitor actions within the organization and will report behaviors which violate the intent outlined in this policy. Conduct As members of the MCHS band program, you are expected to conduct yourself as professional representatives of the school both in school and out in the community. You are privileged to be a member of this program and you should always conduct yourself in a way that upholds our beliefs and values. Proper language must be used at all times. Failure to do so may result in your expulsion from the program. With this in mind, the following infractions are cause for severe disciplinary action: 1) Willful destruction or theft of school property and equipment 2) Willful destruction or theft of personal property and equipment. 3) Possession or use of illegal drugs, alcohol, or any mind altering substance on or before a school related function, or while representing the MCHS band in any way. 4) Any behavior or action, which violates the School District policy. Fund Raising Activities Fund raising is a necessity in the current economic climate. All band members are required to participate in fund raising activities throughout the year. We have great boosters who work to make these fundraisers well structured and easy to carry out. For this to work and to help keep our program alive and well, each student must put in a little work. Specifics on fund raising activities will be announced and information distributed as they arise. 15
Parent Volunteers Parents, In addition to having a full time job, you have a student in band. I understand that for many, this feels like having two full time jobs. Without parent volunteers, it is incredibly difficult to have a successful program. You support with chaperoning, organizing, assisting, working the concession stand, as well as other activities is crucial and much appreciated. Your children are making a commitment to excellence and a commitment to putting in long hours for an incredible growth and learning experience. I am asking that you also contribute time here and there to the program to help us grow and to begin or continue your music education. I think you ll find that the more you devote time to the program, the more you will appreciate just what it is your student is accomplishing. There are many ways to volunteer and to help out, including: Helping at Blast-off Working concessions at football games Assisting with parades Working at festival contest Volunteering at concerts Fundraising Helping with uniform fitting We will continue having a parent meeting at the beginning of each semester and you and your child are required to attend together to make sure we are all on the same page. I will notify you of those meetings well in advance so you can plan accordingly. It is MCHS policy that all parent volunteers complete the volunteer form online. Please complete this form and return it ASAP so that the district has ample time for processing. If you have more questions about volunteering, please contact the boosters at Tigerregiment@gmail.com. Please consider volunteering your time and talents to help the program. Many thanks, Mr. Simon Holoweiko 16

At the end of each rehearsal, all members should expect to help organize and clean all storage areas and make sure that instruments are properly put away. Vandalism or willful damage to the school facility or any band/school property is grounds for severe disciplinary action including possible dismissal from the program. Please behave in a way that represents yourself, your school, and your community positively at all times. If you are renting an instrument from the school, that instrument becomes your responsibility to maintain. Any repairs, damages, loss or theft is the responsibility of the student.
